hi david dolofsky and welcome to the
rabbi rolofsky show
and whether you're watching with our
friends over at anytime or wherever you
watch and listen to your podcast
we are so excited to have you along and
i say we because this is not just me
this is a
a community we are a community
yeah i'll let you know a little secret i
have spoken to a number of people here
in earthshow
looking for a piece of land where we
would be able i would be able to build a
community
and actually after all of my
my scary videos about making aliyah
uh to try to put together a community
for people who might want to
actually move here in spite of
everything that i've done
and uh we could live in that show in our
little bubble and uh
you know uh have a show and schools
and a whole community and that would be
a lot of fun
so i haven't found i haven't i have not
been successful i've had a couple
of of ideas and offers but nothing that
will meet
my uh demanding requirements but uh
ad kadeka that's how i feel about
everybody
who participates in this podcast i say
would that be great if we all got
together and lived together
that was also my deal with the pesach
program luckily i didn't do it this year
because we would have been closed out
but uh you know we have to have
a virtual pesach program and
uh and uh this is
a communal effort and so i say to my
community
mazel tov to everybody as we begin our
third year
it was two years ago that we started
this
hard to believe i who have the
consistency
that amounts to the memory of a goldfish
which i think is about three seconds
i've reached the stage where my father
was when every single person he
tried to mention was named uh uh uh
what's that guy's name anyway no
so uh so here we are now starting a
third year
and a special shout out to our purdue
our producer mikhail
who puts in hours of work to make this
thing look professional because you know
that if i was doing this on my own it
would basically
look like a hostage video
please please come and save me
they're going to kill it anyway so uh
hashem uh a big big shout out
hakkar sato and i'm speaking on behalf
of the entire community
when i say this so uh what can i say
the uh it's it's such a tremendous thing
and i've mentioned this many times that
remission shapiro always said to me if
you can do
anything today that gives people physic
then you have to do it and so i got an
email my name is sv markowitz and i live
in the us of a
i think that's america i just wanted to
say that i watch
every single one of your shows and
absolutely
love them love is in capitals followed
by three
exclamation marks full disclosure i do
too
[Laughter]
i actually have to sit down and watch
the show and i say my gosh this
is so much fun not to mention how much
content there is
i'm always shocked that i managed to get
as much content as i do
yeah some shows other shows i'm i'm so
busy just
just talking
[Laughter]
i was recently watching episode number
71 where you announced the new theme
song and spoke about seminaries being
too expensive i heard
that in the beginning of the show you
gave a shout out to a girl who emailed
you i was wondering if you could do the
same
for me in the next episode no i'm sorry
i can't
okay um another thing that i haven't
done a long time if i don't remember if
i
i can't remember anymore if i ever get
my recipe for onion soup i just made it
last night
for my grandson's up sharon
my uh my uh
daughter and son-in-law have twins
and uh that is no easy accomplishment
and uh there's an upsharing for the
boy twin dovey yesterday
and uh and my daughter asked everybody
to make one special dish that they were
very good at
and i was chosen to make the onion soup
this was by uh
by request so i don't know if i ever
said it or not i don't know
a large pot large pot uh by which i mean
eight quarts
ten quarts even um six to eight onions
depends on the size of the onions sliced
into rounds
a little bit of olive oil you got to
keep it to a minimum because you have to
remember it's a soup and you don't want
it to be
uh uh oily i have been in yeshiva's
where you could put a wick in the soup
and recreate the chanukah miracle
so not too much a little bit of olive
oil
and uh break up the onions and to rounds
you know what i mean pop them out
yeah put them into the pot and brown
them up until they get
very brown be careful you don't burn
them but you want a deep brown
a little flour i use white flour
uh presumably you can use any flour
it's just a thickener and you stir it up
into a make mamashita paste
now i've changed something uh that i
used to do and that was
actually uh something i i picked up from
a cookbook once and that is you spice
the onions
before you add the water usually i just
add the spices to the
soup so salt i happen to use kosher salt
which is better than dry salt no that
just means thick salt yeah
and uh and uh sprinkle some of that on
and i use uh some black pepper and some
curry
i find the curry gives a little bit of a
color and it's yeah nice
anyway and you uh mix it all together
until it makes like a thick paste
add a pitcher of water when i say a
pitch of water i'm saying two quarts
stir it up yeah dislodge whatever's
stuck to the bottom of the pot as best
as you can
use a wooden spoon if you have one if
not use a plastic spoon if not
put on a very strong glove and use your
hands but anyway
mix it up until it starts to bubble
once that's the bubble i take three
medium red onions and these i i like
dice them
i don't uh not dice them finely dice
them into large pieces
and i add that in with another two
quarts of water
and i stir it all together wait till it
comes to a
boil um
and uh and when it comes to a boil i
then add
either dry red wine or dry white wine
depending on which one you have in the
refrigerator
this is a thing how much do you add you
go like this
look look look look a little bit glove
and that's how much you had unless
there's a little bit left in the bottle
then you go go go go go let me just fill
it in because
what i'm going to do same thing a little
bit anyway
um i do that with most spices you know
you sprinkle in a certain amount of
paprika a certain amount of garlic
and then if there's a little bit left
you add that in too because why not
stick it back in there
most people put back the milk with like
you know like this much milk left in it
come on
come on anyway see there's no more room
left in the cup
all right so uh you know take a sip and
add to it
what is that gosh you would take out the
milk there's
one drop left you're like now in america
it's not so bad
because you use cartons they actually
brought them here in israel but for many
years we only had plastic bags
so you like to take out the plastic bag
and put it in another plastic bag and
cut it
open that's a whole procedure so you
stick back the whole
milk container with the empty plastic
bag with a drop of milk back into it
yeah
i have to be done the cups question it
could be people are just so
mahmir on baltashres they're afraid of
that milk going
and i don't think so it's because people
don't like
to have to change the milk bag anyway
um and uh and then i add a leak
how long a leak medium leak yeah
uh if you don't know how to prepare
leaks uh you
can go someplace else but first you pull
out all of the
you know the the yucky leaves you cut
off the top eventually cut off the
bottom of it
and then you have to slit it lengthwise
and wash it briskly under the water and
check
make sure that you've removed all the
sand and that you've removed
all of the bugs yeah
how exactly are you supposed to check
for it etc i don't really know
uh how to explain it where you live
please consult your local uh bug uh bug
authorities
yeah um people say to me i don't like to
bug the rabbi but find a bug rabbi and
then you'll be fine
and then you slice them up into what
would be rounds if they were attached
but
they're half rounds and sprinkle it on
top
yeah i don't know if we said we had
another picture yet another pitch of
water
and uh bring it back to a boil and
at that point uh you'll see
let it boil down a little bit check the
spices
you may choose that into the pitcher or
not that's up to you of water
um but just check the spices yeah and
spice
lightly because you can always add salt
very hard to remove
okay so that's good as we're going into
the vinta
that's yiddish by the way for those who
are not familiar like i am
which means have a healthy winter yeah
they translate them to hebrew here in
israel
yeah so i guess in english as they have
a healthy winter
but uh that's good on those uh she was
cold
now you can add some uh when it's done
you can add some grated cheese to it
you can add some croutons if you do i
always suggest using the smaller
croutons because the larger croutons
tend to
fall apart and just become a big
mushroom there you ever have an onion
soup where they put in like a lot of
cheese a lot of the big thick
croutons and the whole thing becomes a
big goosh about a big
massive not a super super has to be
something that you
you know you can use to annoy people
[Applause]
right okay so that's it i could be i
even gave this recipe once before but i
just made it and it's on my mind
and uh that's it you know it's the third
anniversary show i can't
not everybody is like smee who watches
every single show
i've had emails and people told me i've
watched every show
multiple times
i might do that i just don't remember
[Laughter]
but anyway um so that's it we start our
third
uh our third year and the sponsor for
the third year
is sponsored by benji and alana
rosenbluth as a squish for our children
on the k occasion of the bar mitzvah of
our son
moisha gabriel on shop inspirations
moshe loves listening to the podcast
clearly an intelligent and mature
young man and we think he would really
be touched by a shout out
well you get one moja
mazel tov mazel tov and i will share
with you what i often say to a bar
mitzvah boy
and that is that until now
you have been the epitome of evil
which means there is nothing in this
world more evil than a small child and
if you don't believe me
i'm prepared to name names
[Laughter]
but uh that's beautiful your mamas have
joined
the claw you the the the claudia
the the kahol you're a member of the
congregation
it's an amazing thing when it comes to
counting a mitzvah
counting a minion or doing a mitzvah
your status is just
up there with the greatest gadoli torah
you have now assumed a role of
responsibility
and take it seriously because klausov
needs you
how many intelligent 12 year olds were
there out there in the world
watching the robert jellowski show
understanding the depth
of meaning and inspiration that comes
out uh
i was going to say every week but
sometimes it's more than every week yeah
multiple multiple occasions
so uh big mazel tov to the rosenbluth
family and mayu sinakas
from moshe gabriel and from all of your
kindle
i i always tell the story when uh
when my um when my
father had vietnam uh
we went to the square rubber my father
wanted to
do this virus treatment in hungary
because the the
uh chemotherapy was killing him yeah
and uh we were waiting online waiting
online
and personally if the person if the
person came to the wrap up
and whatever they came for whatever
issue they were coming for and again
they spoke relatively low
but at the end the the rebel would
always give a big brother
knock us from the kingdom that was the
greatest thing
so uh since you bar mitzvah is
barcelona's berations i'll throw in a
little vert
about punishment i actually i'm gonna
pick up a theme from partial voracious
today but
um i'll i'll throw in a little art yeah
when the klola is given the kaaba
yeah uh since i know i do have people
who are not so
hebrew savvy and some people who are not
jewish who watch this podcast
i will translate the terms when god gave
the curse to eve
uh so he gives a whole curse and rashi
explains it first he says you're going
to have tsar gidobanim
you're going to have the pain from
raising your children
second one is you're going to have the
pain of pregnancy and the third
is you're going to have the pain of
childbirth
so strange strange
it's out of order you should have first
said pregnancy
and then you should have said birth and
then you just said raising the children
that should be the correct order love
and
marriage love and marriage
go together like a horse and carrick
right
so uh first you get married then you get
pregnant
then you have a child then you have
targeted the bottom
how can you kill children give you
aggravation before they've been born
don't worry they make up for it but uh
you know how do you
have your psyche at the bottom so one
one of them affirmation given answer
it's pragmatic uh other mahava
had their children um in ganedan
before the hate that means it was
in in a minute now if you're old enough
to appreciate this and many people are
not but
um it used to be that if you took a
picture
on a camera a photograph it came out on
a on film
now my father used to make his own
little
um uh dark room he uh my dad could do
anything
whatever it was he he would teach
himself how to do it he would put on
this little
red light you know and he had the
different chemicals and you would take
out the film
and you would you know put it in this
solution and that solution
this and hang up the dry and then
afterwards you can make prints from it
for those of us who were not as savvy we
would put a little envelope
mail it and uh eventually you'd get back
your photographs
um and it was a process it took a while
to get those pictures
yeah now they have digital cameras
you see when people go to they're taking
hundreds of pictures
hundreds of pictures and for some reason
they have to put all of them up on
whatsapp
i don't know why they don't just like
pick the the ones that are most
uh engrossing yeah but uh everything
goes up because the
take pictures are so easy i've uh
uh i've uh the
the freeds uh used to uh
take you know bring me along to uh to
trips
in europe and everybody had this like
little ipad
and they were just every place they were
taking pictures
hundreds of pictures it was it was
nothing when i was there and you had a
roll of film
you know 12 pictures you had to be more
discriminating
what you did with it yeah but now
digital it's a digital
so when khabib gave birth in ghanaian it
was digital
yeah it was like how it came yeah that
was the kid
so there was no pregnancy and childbirth
to speak of
yeah it happened like that
as i popped today the orders changed but
when he was giving the curse to hava
the children there was no pain of
pregnancy or childhood there would be in
the future
but for now the only thing she was going
to start with is targeted by them and if
your kids are kind and heavill trust me
you had psychedelic
another answer and that is not everybody
has pain and pregnancy
there is more than one story of a woman
who went to the doctor
complaining of stomach pains and the
doctor checked her and said
you are in labor for childbirth
she didn't know the the pregnancy was
so you know
so it was so it was so painless it
wasn't even aware of it
my sister-in-law uh
shelley olofsky gave her a little shout
out
um she said her grandmother
used to have to keep a towel uh between
her legs in the
ninth month because the baby would just
fall out
so not everybody has pain and pregnancy
not everybody has pain with childbirth
but
everybody has psychedelics
so uh so that's why when the square
rebel was said everybody knock us from
the kinder
what a tremendous bra so uh moshe
gabrielle
i'm sure you will be a source of
knockouts to your parents and told clay
so
okay my gosh i've had i've
had such time to relax they're going to
be lifting the
uh the closure soon in jerusalem
i managed to uh to find somebody to cut
my hair anyway
because uh uh it was getting somewhat
unwieldy in fact
i actually sold it to a shaytan so if
you want the rapper elastic look
anyway but
[Music]
yeah you think i'm kidding you'll see
some woman going around with a big white
beard and you'll think oh my gosh she
got the raviolasculin but anyway
be there is it me what do i want to talk
about well
this is the beginning we start the torah
over again
and pasha's voracious we start the
stories
yeah first two story the first two
partios
there's not even a jew in the story
gracious and noah
no jews for for i mean abram avino is
born on the hebrew calendar in the year
coincidence yeah anyway um
but uh but it is cool
i've pointed this out in the past
sometimes there are coincidences that
are just so cool you just have to point
them out
although they are of no particular
significance
for example if you made a gematria out
of the abc
a being one bb two c being c
three d being four then the word
g-o-d d
being four um
g being seven is eleven o being fifteen
equals twenty-six
in gematria of the abc comes out to the
same gematria as uk
buff k it doesn't make a difference
totally insignificant there's no concept
of making a watch right out of the abc
but it's one of those cool coincidences
that just add
a little um flavor and texture to our
lives
yeah all right um
so uh so the
first two parties is that really so i
wanna
i wanna use a phrase and this is a
phrase that the
use a number of times in the gemara in
different contexts
and the phrase is call has hollis
cautious i know i've quoted this in the
past
all beginnings are hard um
says that if you take up sia gasa you
take a big step you lose
one five hundredth of our a notes
the light of your eyes just to lose some
of your eyesight if you take a
large step so ask isis
in that case 500 steps you'll go blind
right so he gives two terrorism
um one is zeno's paradox
those of you who are familiar with greek
philosophy
xenos paradox like all paradoxes are
things that sound like they make sense
but they really don't
right you have to you have to look to
see where the paradox lies but
like when a kid says i have 11 fingers
right
10 9 seven six and five makes 11.
yeah that's a paradox you might not
figure it out right away it's a trick
it's a trick but um xena's paradox is
that if i have to walk from here to the
end of the room i'll never get there
why because in order to get there i
first have to walk half the distance
and then i have to walk half the
remaining distance
and then i have to walk half of that
remaining distance and half of that
distance and have
that distance and i'll keep me walking
half distances and i'll never
arrive at my destination so it's a
paradox because
it sounds cute but we know it's not true
yeah
so it makes it a paradox right
also um you know
when uh when a cardiologist
uh meets an oncologist it's also a
paradox
but anyway um so the
uh the taster says like this you lose 1
500th of the eyesight
the next big step you lose 1 500th of
the i said you have left
then the next step you lose 1 500th of
the ice age you have left and you keep
losing only one
portion of what's there so you'll never
run out completely
the other one he says is it's only the
first step
it's only the first step that you take
if it's a
gossip why because it doesn't matter
what you do after that cause cause
crushes
starting is always hard starting is hard
no what does that mean yeah you know so
okay
so you could say psychologically the
anticipation is difficult
getting yourself up and going yeah
as an older fellow said to me once my
get up and go get up and when you know
you have to get up and you have to get
started and you have to stop moving and
you have to do whatever it is that you
have to do
okay okay that's that's pragmatic
but uh but there's something deeper here
and that's the following i'm sure you've
heard this
hazal as well um
with the right hand and push away with
the left hand
okay again that's learnt in terms
of psychological
um make more of an effort to draw
somebody close
and when you have to push somebody away
do it with your weaker hand with your
left hand
um because uh you know you don't wanna
you know spend as much effort pulling
somebody
close as you do pushing them away
and unfortunately as
somebody once said the out of slovakia
knew how to take
a boy apart and put it back together
today we're half as good
we're very good at taking people apart
we're not so good at putting them back
together
and uh how many people in education
yeah um can destroy a kid
without taking the time to realize the
consequences i must have told the story
of the past two years uh
this boy was in slobodka we've been
there for 10 years
and he got a not aliyah he was called up
to the torah for not one of the more
important police
so he knew that the aldo was behind
because the altar was behind everything
in
slovakia so he says rebbi are you upset
at me he says why
he says well i i i you know i didn't get
one of the federal lease
i assume there's a reason because you
got an alley at all
a belgaeva like you you egotist
they gave you a leah wow i'm shocked
he says rebbe what did i do he says oh
you don't even know he says no
he says when you came here 10 years ago
it was an old mishashima
he was starting to lose his uh faculties
it was getting old
and he didn't realize it was shabbos and
he went to put on his children and i
told you go over and tell him it's
shabbos
and as you walked over you had a smile
on your face
you can you can laugh at somebody
who even broken you can't come up to his
ankles
and you're going to laugh at him he says
you're right i'm sorry i didn't forget
uh
i'll work uh i'll work on my guyva i'm
like melissa
he says but baby that was ten years ago
why don't you say anything tell them he
says it took me
10 years to build you up to the point
that i could say that to you
you have to know whether a person is
ready to hear it
so as much as much effort as you're
going to put to push away
you have to put a lot more effort to
pull close
but there's a deeper idea
and that is as we know from the spheres
coming out of sukis
we know the ushen corresponds to the
spheres
if you pay the attention on hoshanah
rabbah
each of the little sukim you say after
each hoshanah
one is one is blura right that's a whole
you see the sphere is over there and you
know the
spheres represent parts of your body
your right hand is
and your left hand is gluer
one is me and one is me
the world was created with kindness
there is no way in din to create the
world
and that's why the rashi at the
beginning when it says
yeah because who wanted to create the
world and din
of course he couldn't create the world
and din there's no
way to create the world in din din means
justice getting what you deserve
how can someone deserve to exist before
they exist
it doesn't make any sense you have to
you have to earn
that right so no child
you know when a child says i didn't ask
to be born well yeah
who exactly was i supposed to talk to
about it
you know i decide to bring children
this world as an act of christ that
can't be dim
so to be beaurey to create
creation is always
god says stop other words the world
would just keep going and going and
going
and uh if the marble
the flood teaches us one thing it's too
much of a good thing
it's not a good thing yeah
anybody who has overeaten over this
holiday season
knows that too much of a good thing
is a bad thing so uh
so you have to you have to have din
to temper the chasse but all glory can
do
all din can do is maintain
hold back
control a guru can create you can't
create with your left hand
yeah you have to create with your right
hand
it's the meters that creates
so when you say
curve be a min it means that the right
hand
has more power and if i want to bring
you close to me
if i want to create something if i want
to build you into a person
the only way to do that is to reset
i can only do that with the right hand
to push away i could push with the left
hand
once something exists i can control it
i can't control something that doesn't
exist
cause means that beginnings are hard
because it takes a lot more
effort to start something
and therefore his place for some soccer
says that first step
starts the process that gets things
going
and
[Music]
you have to you have to ask yourself
right
before you create something you have to
think
what is it i want what am i trying to
accomplish i've told the story
i'm sure many times already i was at a
chapel town
the fellow in charge says to me it's a
very successful shabbaton
i said really why he says well we have a
lot of students then they're having a
great time
i said was that the purpose of the
shabbaton
he says i don't know what is the purpose
of a shabbaton supposed to be
i said travis milk is the wrong time to
ask that question
i'm i i'm almost positive i mentioned
this recently yeah
alka seltzer had a whole bunch of really
successful commercials
and they were very entertaining and they
run all kinds of awards they just didn't
sell arkansas
you have to ask yourself what is the
purpose that you're trying to do
so before you create something you have
to really put a lot of thought into it
what is it i'm trying to do and why they
have a fancy word for this
in the business world it's called a
mission statement what am i trying to
accomplish
let's establish our value system before
i sit down and start making decisions
the first step you take will determine
the rest of the journey
and there's a chinese proverb that every
great journey begins with one step
or to quote bilbo baggins to his
uh nephew frodo be careful when you step
out of your
front door because the road that runs
through the shire
leads to the lonely mountain how true
you you make a decision
and so obviously you decide to get
married
that one step is going to set into
motion
a whole bunch of other decisions you
uh you become uh
you decide to have a child that's gonna
have a whole bunch of decisions
you decide to move to a particular town
you decide to make aliyah
you decide to become from speak to belly
chuba
when they have to sit down and make that
decision and that decision once you do
that decision
everything else follows in its wake
you've set into motion
a process that has so many other but the
first decision is the hardest
i moved territory some 32 years ago
i had to make a decision which school to
send my kid for kindergarten
a couple of different schools and once i
chose my school
all my other decisions were made for me
i knew which newspaper i read
i knew which uh hashgraph i was allowed
to eat i knew what people could
associate with
[Laughter]
everything else fell into place
what is that first decision the first
decision
cause caution so we're starting our
third year
wow and uh
it's interesting that i have received a
number of emails
over the past few months with
suggestions
of what to do with the show besides what
i always do
yeah uh someone said i should have uh
add segments to the show uh maybe we
should have a question and answer
um um section where
every week i answer one or two questions
from the mailbag you know honestly
uh suggestions came in i don't know what
to think about it
because cautious when you when you start
something whatever it happens to be
yeah i used to write a column in the
hamadiya it was very hard for me because
i had to create a work of art from
scratch every single week and my wife
said to me
look at columnists they don't do that
they have uh
they they have a formula they do this
they do this they do
that there's no way to keep grinding out
uh columns
each each week you're trying to
basically you know write you know a
masterpiece
essay yeah that's why i stopped writing
college
um but uh but it is
it is an interesting uh it is an
interesting thing
so uh it's cause cautious so
i i want to leave with one last message
to my friend
moshe gabriel and that is the following
um the uh
uh this the the guns
here in earth's jail brushline he
brought his
bar mitzvah boy to the stipelin my name
is bar mitzvah together to get a bracha
then he should be a telephone
so the stapler says fine i'll give you a
broker but how are you going to become a
telephone
no hard question to ask a 13 year old
so he said you're 13 years old
he says sleep eight hours a day
either eight hours a night or seven
hours and take a nap whatever it is
and you need time to dive in and to eat
and
you know hygiene all that kind of stuff
and it should leave you with about
well that should take about four hours
you should be left with 12 hours a day
it says you learn for 12 hours a day
from now till you get married and i
promise you you'll be a telephone
closed captioning not available
everyone's not not so easy
but there were people who made a
decision back in voracious and they said
excuse me back in broncos and they said
we're going to start that filming
that's a commitment that's every day
sounds grinding you turn around seven
and a half years later when you
finish shots and you say that was
because of the decision i made that was
that first big step i took
that put me onto the road and i just
followed through
go on a journey and i'll show you the
destination
but you have to set yourself on a
journey
of the president but this world is a
there's a pathway corridor
we're going someplace hashem
everyone should have a great start to
this new year
everyone should uh make an effort
to go through the parasha every week
with rashi make an
effort it'll change your life trust me
i'm speaking from experience yeah
and you finally bite the bullet you sit
down your mouth go through all the
rashes
sure life-changing experience you do
that every year
after about three years it'll come
almost automatically to you
whereas we're saying hebrew but
anyway so that's it give everybody a
bracha it should be a great cheer
everything should go well
