hi everybody this is david alaska and
welcome to the rabbi yolowski show
uh first and foremost thank you to
everyone who has darwin for my
well-being
or hashem uh i
uh i took another test and it's negative
so uh so i'm
you know as far as far as corona goes
i'm supposed to be fine
tell me other people tell me that 30 of
the tests this
[Laughter]
i don't know but uh but you know what
can i tell you
no to fila ever goes to waste uh
there's a powerful idea um anybody
remembers there was a soldier nachman
waxman
who never was kidnapped and uh
and he was uh eventually killed
and uh and and it's really journalists
because of course it takes an
israeli journalist to have this level of
uh a sensitivity
uh said to his father says i understand
all these people were praying to save
your son why weren't their prayers
answered
and he said they were answered they were
told no
ah who says that to a father has just
lost a child and you have to be
you'd think that was the sickest thing
who knows
some reporter just complained that as
donald trump was being
uh airlifted by helicopter
to the medical center he was upset that
he didn't answer any questions
so you know journalists have a very
special place
but um but in any event
uh as far as i can tell i'm okay
i'm feeling a lot better um and so i
don't know have i never even had corona
i don't even know uh it could be i had
it and i got better quickly it could be
i was already at the end of it when i
tested
i don't know i don't know but uh
but when uh when mr waxman
was sending shiver he'd give a different
answer
he said when the soldiers who went to
save my son
uh they found the safe house where he
was being kept and they
and they went in but there was like a a
store of like a safe
vault and they had to blow it open
and they lost the element of surprise
and that's how they were able to kill
him
and uh and he says the soldiers came to
see me afterwards and they said i don't
know how we survived
there were bullets flying and hand
grenades and all kinds of things were
going on i don't know how any of us got
out of there alive
so mr waxman said clay swaddabind for
the to save the life of a jewish boy and
it feels so answered
it uh it just wasn't mine
so uh oh that's fearless whether i
actually had corona or not i
like i say i i certainly seem rather
unscathed from the experience
um and uh and
uh hopefully all you fearless will go
for all those people really answered if
i'm counting asking
should have a fuller foolish lemur all
the tulas should go there too
and listen i don't know it could be i
was sick and i and i got better because
of what it was it wouldn't be the first
time
yeah when i had my uh my heart attack
and uh they did the angiogram the doctor
looked at me he was the head of
the department he said why are you still
alive
you're not getting enough blood to keep
you alive
someone up there must like you and the
surgeon who did the surgery he said
he says you're lucky it was me anybody
else you'd be dead
so after that whenever i would meet
people and they'd say you know we
dabbing for you i said you should know
what worked
[Laughter]
because two tough doctors told me i
shouldn't be around anymore so uh
i'm in overtime anyway
it's uh it's interesting you know the
other mauricio
it says you know when you eat you're
gonna die so that day
but he went right into shabbos and he
got his nisham yesterday
and says that he lived off his neshama
you say
for the rest of his life so uh
and uh but uh but i
would like to apologize for my
appearance
because we here in arizona and lockdown
and so all essential services are denied
to us
like um uh
hair stylist no you can't
go get your hair done all right maybe if
i'll speak with a house that make an
exception for me but as it is
no such luck and uh so my wife just
pointed out that my
my beard has gotten bushier now i had it
at
times in my life you know this this
image
that i was going to grow one of those
rishi shiva beards you know
um you know one of those nice
long you know
very question but my beard doesn't grow
like that it
it rolls in so i just come out looking
like the wolf man
and at this point in my life like you
know most of it comes in white
and i look like an old wolf man
when i was in a bayless i couldn't cut
my hair for several months you know
so i met somebody who i discussed
working with many times and he says
wow you've aged terribly
apparently when my beard comes in it
makes me look even
older you know so uh
it's not as bad as as my eyes
genetically
my eyes hang down so
i i couldn't see my eyelids were
literally
in fact the doctor told me that my
eyebrows had fallen off
of my brow they were just hanging down
and i couldn't see so uh i went to get a
eye surgery yeah what we call what we
call the vernacular eye job you know
anyway when i went for the post uh
surgery uh
um uh you know uh
uh consultation so he shows me before
and after pictures he says you see now
you don't look so tired and angry
i said did it ever occur to you that i'm
just tired and angry
[Laughter]
but it definitely took a few years of my
life although it did put a little strain
on my marriage because my wife thought
that i was
like making like angry eyes
the surgery you know gave me those eyes
anyway so um
uh crusader but uh so that's why so i'm
a little uh
i'm a little uh overgrown and uh
um that's it what can i tell you but
it's
hashem i apologize to everybody out
there
who um i really wanted to do uh part of
its fearless series
and um and i had had
lots of stuff that i really wanted to
talk about what can i tell you i was i
was definitely feeling sick i don't know
if i had
corona i don't know if i had a regular
flu uh
i don't know if i was just tired and
angry
now you can't tell from my eyes so i
don't do that with you
so uh i want to talk a little bit about
the first
a sponsorship nice people been waiting a
long time for this sponsorship i
apologize
this episode is sponsored sponsored by
small arnold
in honor of the marriage of my daughter
amaleah
who has always been a student of yours
now full disclosure she got married a
while ago and
he had sent me the sponsorship and it
just i think it was all the way back at
tupac
and uh i was supposed to give a shout
out i forgot to give a shout out i'm
sorry
hey the one person you can't blame is my
producer because michael
handles everything and in fact you know
because i was sick i fell behind on the
sponsorships and i said
you know he's very efficient somebody
sponsors an episode
he writes in which episode you're going
to get and the date then
puts in all the things and he adds it on
and it's tremendous but
you know i uh unfortunately what can you
do
well yeah yeah uh stars stars are a
fickle group you know i mean these poor
these poor producers work so hard to try
to uh to produce a quality uh
thing
i was a comedian jerry seinfeld that he
says you know
he was getting an award for something he
says he says i don't know
what do awards mean you know you get
some actor you know
and basically we tell them stand here
read what we wrote just like we told you
brilliant the man is a genius give that
man an award
he read exactly what we told him just
the way we told him to do it
it's an artwork so anyway so uh
in fact i have to really get back to the
raviolovsky studios
that uh has his more high quality
equipment where we're you know but like
i said we're locked down here so like
we're not really supposed to leave more
than like 100 meters from our house
people get stopped and get tickets and
fines all kinds of terrible things
unless you protest so that's why we were
going to have a simple business show
even put up a big sign antoine netanyahu
rally
that would be okay but anyway
maybe that isn't me so i want to i want
to read the
the sponsorship first and foremost this
episode was sponsored by
arnold in honor of the marriage of my
daughter amaleah who has always been a
student of yours when she was young
i used what i learned from yoshiram on
answering questions to answer her
questions
i do that too by the way
[Laughter]
my kids end up with a tremendous amount
of information on basic judaism that
unfortunately many kids don't have
i remember we were on a flight once and
mr shiva guy was saying next to these
two women it was a male owl flight
so he asked my daughter if he would
switch with her my daughter was
i don't know 12. yeah she said sure
so he switches seats it ends up these
two ladies are christian missionaries
and i felt bad for them because they
were really not prepared
[Laughter]
in the end my daughter was inviting them
over for shabbos anyway
but uh to answer questions
when she was old enough i gave her
access to your shiram so she could learn
how to answer questions herself and she
has been a source of
physic wherever she goes beautiful
she used your mahalak when she spent the
summer in brandeis
and was confronted by an anti-religious
professor unbelievable in brandeis i'm
shocked
anyway she used it to answer questions
in high school
and in seminary i hope that she didn't
have an anti-religious professor there
yeah we owe you a tremendous debt of
gratitude for
all you have done for us and we thank
you both for your words of encouragement
and your sense of humor
most importantly we thank you for your
honesty and permission to be imperfect
in a world that has very little room for
mistakes keep up the good work
or hashem if nothing else you can count
on me
to be in inspiration for mediocrity
but the truth of the matter is listen i
say it all the time you know
what can you do you know that people who
are tremendously inspiring
yeah and have uh very great people with
tremendous
uh potential um
aren't threatening to me
because god made me extremely average
yeah
uh one could argue below average but uh
you know at best
yeah and uh and what do you do
yeah you you play the hand you're dealt
or as a backgammon player
i can tell you that one of the rules of
backgammon is you never complain about
the dice
never complain about the dice because
sometimes it'll go your way something it
won't go your way
you have to play the odds you have to do
what makes the most sense even though it
won't always work out
my mother would win by
winning she would just whatever spin she
wanted she got she would like look at
the board she goes
i need a six two boom there it was
at the end when you well i can't take
over your piece just get double six of
those six those
so my mother used to tell the story she
was on a plane that my parents would go
to ireland
of a tour and they were playing backyard
on the plane
and my mother had this look at my
father's screaming at him
you're so lucky oh god what are you
doing
so eventually my father gets up to go to
the bathroom this little irish lady
turns around and says
i think you should play something
different with your husband
[Laughter]
i don't think it's a good game to play
but you play andrew dalcy take what you
have and you make the most of it
so uh i got so much to say what are we
going to do
i'm going to do a few podcasts obviously
because i hope so i can catch up a
little bit
i want to make up some sponsorships i
want to give you something to do
during collaborate assuming that you're
locked down like we are
so they give you something to do and uh
yeah gabaldic all good things
so uh so i'll tell you what i wanted to
share with you
um this is a special
this was a is a special circus obviously
because the whole circus is the rabbana
was bent
except in the base of mikdash the
mitzvah of the dalek medium luluvin
estrig
all of these are only on the first day
of circus
with the eraser the rest of the time is
the red one
and this year the first day of circus
was of course
shabbos and we do not
do the dollar medium when it comes out
on showers
uh now for those of you in america
okay because at least you have two days
you have to even though the second day
is direct button but
you know you get to go through all the
motions again
to make it at least feel like you know
you're uh
you're having a young here we have one
day young dev that's it it's over
and then you're going to call me and um
and uh so yeah you don't have you don't
have uh
you don't have the mitzvah little master
i was in artstroll
years and years ago and uh
it was a year like this and i asked
somebody did you get your dollar to meet
him yet
and you lulu yes he says no
i said why he says because it's only the
rabbana
so um so i'm
going to go out mozi shabbos
you know i'll go to mahmoud they'll have
everything dirt cheap because
you know no there's not much of a market
for citrons after the circus holiday
the price of citrons drops dramatically
people are not
you know a lemon on steroids no but
nobody's looking for this
it's not a big demand you know around
suck is time to candy them so you have
another fruit to eat tonight
but for the most part uh it's it's uh
it's not it's not the kind of fruit
that's that's in uh
it's a big demand so um so okay
so uh so we say the hoshinis
and we don't march around they try to be
a little bit essential
even though marching around today is
anyway a problem social distancing
someone sent me a picture of how you
know you do hakofus
it was a revolving door and so everybody
goes
to the sections and turns around
brilliant actually
but anyway um
i remember reading years ago that a
revolving door is extremely expensive
extremely expensive like
at the time this is an old article it
was like a hundred thousand dollars for
evolving doors
much more now um and they say the reason
people do it is because
if you open the door and close the door
constantly
the amount that you'll spend on
temperature control you know you'll lose
a lot of money
so this way the revolving door helps to
to keep that
yeah so another event just a little fun
fact
we got got so many of them yeah and uh
i remember we were learning bacharach
so uh it talks about if
uh you have an animal that's a cross
between a goat and a sheep and i said uh
that's called either a geep or a shot
okay that's why she said you just made
that up on the spot i said no you can
call it either legitimately a geek or a
show
and they said can't be so it's not like
the old days
you had to go running for the
encyclopedia and look it up
you know they go on google and a person
says he's right
how could you possibly know that and i
said because uh i had a brother used to
bring me uh
his his old uh bathroom readers
and they have these little facts on the
bottom of the page
and i just remember that it said yeah
that
a cross between a goat and a sheep is
either called the keyboard show that
stuck with me
why i don't know why it's stuck with me
so uh
i was reading an article about revolving
doors so uh
yeah um
in that event so uh
so we you say the hoshinis now in
eritsel
renegadegra is uh when there is a
uh we live in esrig so you say hollow
with your non-new one and you
immediately do a shot
right i think that's the gross minute
and
uh it's certainly less wear and tear on
the on the bald medium
yeah um so you don't have to like put
them away take them out and you know
but on shabbos when there are no dollar
medium so we
do the um
we do the hollow and then you just say
hashanas
and uh you know normally when you're
marching around
um especially if there's a tall person
behind you and
he's resting his moxa on your head you
know
or uh or when you have um
uh you know people who are like sort of
poking
so uh yeah it's really a little harder
to concentrate and if
um you're busy being upset about the
person in front of you who's schlepping
schlepping and the people behind you are
like both pushing and this person is
like
you know i was like you're trying to do
i circle around do i try to get around
him you know do i uh
i don't know how it works every place
but in some trolls you know there's
certain people who set
up the path you know and if you break
the path
like there's always people like cut to
the middle and just walk around the
beam but you know they they get very
upset very upset you have to be very
careful here
you don't want to start arguing people
have long pointy sticks in their hands
but anyway so it's not always uh easy to
concentrate on what you're saying but
yeah i'm sitting nice and quiet
socially distanced at an uh at my uh
neighbor's minion downstairs the reuben
family
they should be well and uh they set me
up a little corner
yeah far away from people
that's in general even not even because
the corona just in general they like to
sip me off
i'm just kidding they brought me over a
little table this time
i was like anyway so i had a chance to
really
go through it and a number of things
caught my eye that i want to share with
you i'm not going to learn the whole
thing
i'm just going to run through it um
[Music]
gomez
that caught my eye right away because uh
we have an online daffy homie share
those who would like to join
it is definitely an experience
and um you know some people can't make
it all the time but it is recorded
for people in this year that they can
listen to it um
and it says you made the tum shop as two
thousand dollars now
what that means is and this is where
we're up to right now
is how you calculate uh your city you
make a shape of your city
and then you square it and then you make
two thousand ammo square
around that and that's as far as you're
allowed to walk on shabbos unless you
make an error
yeah but otherwise that's it so you
established khon shabus and i thought
that's so interesting
because almost everybody
uh holds that it's the rabbana
it's not the eraser ruby akiva holds is
the eraser but for the most part
yeah people hold this through a bonnet
i'm thinking why would you pick
out of all things trump showers
mishibas regular mishabas
you're not allowed to walk beyond your
place on shabbos
again
you wait for shabbos to come in to
rakhas
call me shisha ashabus you work six days
for shabbos you shavish
tennis had clothes shabbos you wait for
shabbos to go out
covered verone carlos shabbos susmis
bashabas
you change your clothing macho mr
machina shabbos you make special food
[Applause]
and you set up before with your eyes
one of those words that that don't
really help me because i don't
i don't ever use them in real life
domain
public domain in a public dom a private
domain i don't know who
who really uses those kind of words but
yeah but uh you're not allowed to carry
from the torah from israel to a church
and vice versa
but then there were two others that's
what's called the carmelus
which is something that's not a resource
not a shirt
um and there's a makka patura
a place where it doesn't even count
nothing counts there
yeah sibo atlekas near madlekis bashabas
which could also be under abundant
because if you dive in my river
you already said kiddush in
[Music]
the fact that you say uh the
schweinsteiger has seven brothers
um etc and
i was surprised if i was gonna make
uh a paragraph um
speaking about shabbos i think i would
make it mostly malachi's dioraisa
zuria harisha bisho
planting harvesting cooking
all kinds of things like this
you think about home shoppers you talk
about carrying
all the other things that go with that
seems like a strange thing to focus on
so uh so i realized
we have a diarisa a mitzvah from the
torah
on the first day of circus to take you
down meet him
thank you lulu if you think yesterday
thank you that's what they got to wait
don't do it why because it could be
somebody won't know what to do
and they'll carry it i know there are
people who
every single circus they they have to
know again how do you how do you hold
the little vanessa right here you turn
it over
what directions you wave in you know
every every year they need a little
refresher course on this
so someone's going to take it to you and
say show me how to do a little vanessa
yeah and um
because we're afraid that someone might
carry it
so we don't do a little vanessa on on
the only day that we have it's the
eraser
the round bomb holds that you know if
you like go to the kotel so
over there you could also do it into the
eraser that's why some people go but now
with corona
we can't really do that so it's a mess
but um
but yeah that's the uh that's the one
theater i said we stopped it for that
it's it's so interesting by the way this
is unrelated to what i wanted to talk
about but
sometimes people miss uh missed the
point
you know uh not the shiloh
shiva or samara tells the story about
this woman who said to once that we're
always careful to have a pesach state
and we always invite over the family
every place i say and one year i
realized i forgot to ask the butcher for
a shank bone so i went to the freezer i
took out a pork chop and i put on the
center plate
does that even realize
i don't even realize that there's a
problem there yeah
so um so you have to uh
have to have a have to have a little
perspective yeah
um so uh so there was this reform
uh temple that kept one day rosh
hashanah
it said two days for sugar that's for
biblical origin
they have only one day original but if
that day russia shannon came out on
shabbos they didn't blow chauffeur
because they know you don't blow
chauffeur when it comes out on shabbos
but the reason number chauffeur is
because you're afraid someone might
carry a shower a chauffeur
you have somebody to blow it's
adventurous you took away the second day
of rosh hashanah
and then you but you keep the direct
button on them not blowing the chauffeur
yeah so
what are we saying here we're saying
we're supposed to be doing the dalai
meaning
but we're not doing it because there's
so much of shabbos that the power of it
comes from the durabana
the whole idea of shabbos of the former
sri lankan shabbos on the various
carryings on shabbos
and moshe feinstein asks we have the
arisa to blow chauffeur
on uh on rosh hashanah but like this
year when it comes out on shabbos you
don't blow
he says but when you blow shuffle moves
from the ki
din to the keys he moves from the throne
of judgment to the throne of
mercy it's so important how could you
take it out
so he says if sad you're going brings
ten reasons why we blow chauffeur and
one of them
is to remind us of the words of the
sages
so when we are making not blowing
chauffeur
because the ham told us not to blow
chauffeur
that's blowing shaipha
so when we talk about the mitzvah of
dalat meaning
and we say that we you know we don't we
don't do it on tribes because
then the praise we give about shabbos is
how
shabbos has become so meaningful for us
through the words of the comment you
take away
take out the abundance and you lose a
tremendous amount
the reason we don't do business on
shabbos is there a butter
there's a lot of things you could do
there so okay so one reason is because
you might come to write
there's an army base here in israel it's
very hot and
uh the px has to be closed and the
soldier was in charge i said listen you
know we want to go and get isis
he says i can't i can't now let's open
on shops
so they said come on it's so hot he says
all right i'll
unlock it take whatever you want just
write it down
if they would have given money it would
have been a direct button
but it's also because you could take
away the spirit of shabbos
when i was in ncsy so uh
so the legendary schmuck labor yeah
from raw orchestra uh dear friend
um so uh wherever we were
he would make himself the rat the
president of
whatever it was and he would get up and
make enhancements and uh
evidently we were at a hotel and uh they
had a shabbos elevator and
it never seen the show was elevated it
was like well what is this shabbos
elevator you know
so he got to make his announcements and
he says uh you may have noticed that we
have a chavez elevator
uh during free time the shabbos bus is
going to take you to the shabbos mall
where we're going to give you special
shabbos money so that you can buy things
but don't carry it back because it's
shabbos
the idea being of course that you know
you could take away from the spirit of
shabbos
that's a that's a whole category known
as
where shabbos begins to lose its uh its
character and its importance
and uh and uh what can i say daffy me we
just
did a gemara not that long ago with ruby
akiba whenever kevin was in
prison so one of us tell me them would
bring him
food and water now he needed
water in order to be able to wash yeah
and and
and uh this student was ringing the
water
and the guy looks it and says what's all
this wood he doesn't need so much water
are you trying to like
you know dig a hole you're gonna wear it
away
so he spills out the water and leaves
him a little water to drink
when he gets the water so every kevin
washes his hands to his breath
and the talmud starts crying and he says
rebbe you're 120 years old
you don't have enough water here to
drink
he says i would rather die than go
against the words of the
and and it's so interesting how this
comes up in circus
and that was the simcoe space of show
ava where they would sing as they would
bring the water up etc
and that sadokim didn't accept it they
went they didn't accept
him so they didn't accept the it's not
written in the title
so yanayama becomes a taduki
he takes the water he pours it on his
feet instead of under misbehave
and the people pelted him with their
spoken
he says in the soldiers and there's a
slaughter but
you know but uh but the
idea of of not having
you know how the gemara ends kumarasuka
talking about bas bilga who is the
daughter of
uh from the kohanim in the house of
bilga
and when the greeks came in to uh
desecrate the base of mikdash she comes
in with a shoe and bangs on the mizbeach
locust locus you wolf
you eat the the kobanos and you don't
protect them in the time of need
and i thought it's so interesting that
sukis seems to have so much of this
uh um
so much of the durabonans that are
associated with it and
uh
you know yanai is sort of the end of the
chanukah story
sort of said and until hanukkah story
because shimano makabi
who was the last surviving brother
became nasi
and his son joachim and hercules
yochanan hercules who was the
cohen cuddle yeah took over after him
and his son yanai made himself both king
and coin god and he wasn't allowed to be
a cohen goddale
because his mother was a shuiya she had
been captured by the non-jews
and um and that's where the tsadokim
were able to convince him to go against
so it's interesting that these
these different references should be
there so we're going to talk about that
next time
the this connection of the greeks
to suggest and the nisa khamayim
and
and all these different ideas that go
into it but just
ah you have people when it comes to
yandere just to do a bunny
just to do it but you have uh
people i know don't wash when i was in
school i was once in a i was having a
lunch class
so i went to bench i said how many
people washed
no hands went up so they said ask how
many people had bread
i said how many people had bread and all
the hands went up
if you if he was 120 years old
he was not in great health it was being
at the end of his life and all he could
worry about
was the tilted so
we missed the arizona mitzvah of
of dalai minim why in order to be
the dinder of that we were afraid
somebody would carry around
and maybe throw them on one last point
we know that the
the dallas medium represent four types
of juice
all right the dates have a nice taste
but they don't have a smell
the hadas and the myrtle have a nice
