[Music]
oh hi there
rabbi b here i was just busy looking and
playing with my xylophones and a
xylophone is a musical instrument
usually made of wood or metal that has a
series of musical notes made out of wood
or metal that when you strike them
[Music]
they make a beautiful sound and if you
strike them in the right order
[Music]
they can play beautiful music and a
beautiful song
and i have this kind of little xylophone
this is kind of a toy xylophone as and
and as you can see it has all different
kinds of colors has a blue
and purples
another blue red green orange and yellow
and it
has eight notes
you know music is made up of different
notes and in music there are seven notes
you can see them in front of me over
here my seven desk bells now you might
say wait a second rabbi b there are
eight desk bells but if you notice there
are two red desk bells
the reds are the same note so really we
have
[Music]
seven notes
seven is such a wonderful number in
music and of course in the days of the
week the seventh day being shabbat
exactly and of course the seven notes on
the musical scale can be put together to
make some beautiful songs now there are
seven notes on a musical scale and
sometimes instead of numbering them one
two three four five six seven we give
them letters a b c d e f g
g
being the seventh letter of the abcs
but because this musical scale here is
in the key of c
the notes are c d
e
f
g
a
b
and then back to c
remember their notes do not go past the
letter g
right so you have
[Music]
in the musical scale
now of course i have this toy xylophone
as well and it also has the seven notes
[Music]
and then the last note again the
beginning and they chose different
colors for this xylophone they started
with purple
[Music]
and this xylophone starts with red
and of course if you play the notes in
different orders you can play a song let
me play a song for you and see if you
know what song i'm playing
[Music]
did you guess
i'll try it again
of course old macdonald had a farm
or how about this song one of my
favorite songs
[Music]
you know what that is
[Music]
of course hashem is here hashem is there
up up down down right left all around
here there everywhere that's where he
can be found
well that's really fun but you know what
sometimes we don't even need a xylophone
or musical bells to play a song
i have a really fun craft tutorial to
show you how you can make your very own
musical xylophone at home
now to make your very own musical
xylophone at home all you're going to
need is six glass cups
all right
now these glass cups i got from walmart
they were one dollar each you could
probably find them at dollarama or any
dollar store or any home store just make
sure you get a thin kind of a glass cup
[Music]
that makes a little bit of a ringing
sound
now the next thing we're going to need
is some water
that's great about a half a pitcher full
and something to tap on the glass cups
with i always like to use my good old
wooden xylophone mallet
now if you don't have a wooden xylophone
mallet you could use any kind of wooden
stick or even a metal fork or spoon just
be very careful that when you tap the
cups
you tap them very gently we don't want
them to break now because this activity
is using glass cups make sure you ask a
mommy or a daddy or a grown-up in your
house to help you to make sure you're
doing it safely we don't want the cups
to fall down because they could break
and also we don't want to tap them too
hard because they could break and spill
over and it would not be such a good
thing to happen so please be always be
careful when you're using glass cups for
any kind of musical instrument now what
we're going to do is we are going to add
some water to our very first cup and
this one's going to go all the way to
the top and if you listen you'll be able
to hear the sound of the cup
change as the water fills up
[Music]
did you hear the water change the sound
of the cup it went from ding ding ding
ding all the way down
[Music]
see the difference or hear the
difference
all right the next cup down we're going
to fill up a little bit less than the
first cup i would even say on these
larger cups about a half an inch from
the top
[Music]
do you hear the difference that's
because one cup is more full the one
that's more full has a deeper sound
and the one that's less full has a
little bit of a higher sound next we're
gonna fill up our third cup about three
quarters of an inch from the top
[Music]
ah
[Music]
i think i know that song mary had a
little lamb all right now the next cup
we're going to fill a full inch from the
top of the cup
[Music]
and you can already hear
very different sounds on all the cups
because of the amount of water we're
putting in all right cup number five
we're gonna fill that up a lot even
lower than cup number four we're going
to fill this one about an inch and a
half from the top
[Music]
and as long as they sound different
that's what you're going for
[Music]
and the last cup we're going to fill
about halfway up
all right i think our cups are ready now
looking at the cups they all sound
different but they don't all look
different so sometimes i like to add
some food coloring into the cups to
create a beautiful rainbow of colors
let's create some rainbow colors in our
cups
oh
that's much better so now our first cup
will call
red our second cup we'll call orange
the third cup we'll call yellow
the fourth cup we'll call green
the fifth cup we'll call blue
and the final cup the sixth cup we'll
call purple
and now we have six notes now we
mentioned before that music has seven
notes but today for this experiment in
this tutorial we're just gonna use six
of the notes that we need to make a lot
of songs like this song do you know what
it is
[Music]
that's right it was twinkle twinkle
little star great job how about this
song
[Music]
[Applause]
of course hashem is here hashem is there
i know another really nice song do you
know what song this is
[Music]
yeah of course we just played it a few
seconds ago
old macdonald had a farm
how about this song
[Music]
you knew that one happy birthday to you
i know another song i like to sing it
goes like this
[Music]
yes did you know that one david meller
israel
another wonderful song that you can play
on the xylophone or on the cup xylophone
now if you're going to try this at home
you can look in the comment section
below in this video and find a tutorial
all about how to fill up the cups as
well as
how to play all the different songs
using the colors have a try see if you
can get it to work good luck to you well
for now it's bye bye from me rabbi bye
[Music]
for a little bit of bonus another thing
i love to do is pour the water back now
i do like to mix colors of course and i
like to find a way to make different
kinds of colors using different mixtures
so for example
if i was to mix the red
[Music]
with the yellow
well that would create
orange that's right red and yellow mixed
together create orange
another color that mixes really well
with yellow
would be blue watch what happens when i
mix the yellow
with the blue
that made a beautiful shade of green wow
that's really really special
that's really really fun to mix colors i
wonder what other kinds of colors we
could mix
what if we mixed
red
together
with blue
what would happen then i wonder
[Music]
aha
it turned
purple oh
and i wonder what happens if we mix all
the colors together let's take a look
put the purple in there
add some orange and some green
and some yellow
and some orange
oh my now it's turned
into a dark dark brown
i wonder if that's how they get brown
colors just mix all the colors together
alright friends well before i spill this
water all over the place i better pour
it out in the sink and put my glass cups
away safely until next time well i hope
you enjoyed this bonus extra part of the
tutorial we'll see you later bye bye
