Rabbi B - Let's Get Ready for Shabbat

[Music] oh hi there rabbi b here phew i just finished a long week of work man oh man it was a busy busy week i worked all week long i worked on sunday and monday tuesday and wednesday thursday and friday and now it's almost time for shabbat and i love shabbat shabbat is the wonderful day of the week where we get to rest and stop all that busy busy working and instead focus on more important things like davening praying to hashem or learning torah or of course spending time with friends and family oh i think i hear something i think i hear devorah the bee let's go see what she's up to devorah devorah devorah devorah you look like you're really busy getting ready for shabbat wow devorah is setting the table so beautifully wow devorah you got the candlesticks those are the candlesticks that a mommy or a jewish girl will light for shabbat what a beautiful mitzvah oh and i see you got my silver kidnish cup wow that's for friday night and shabbat day to make the kiddish prayer to thank hashem for this beautiful day of shabbat wow well devorah i think our house looks great and i think we're almost ready for shabbat that's right there are still some things we need to do like go shopping take a bath get dressed in our shabbat clothes oh there's so much to do to get ready for shabbat you know what i think devorah do you think you could go to the store for me to do a shabbat shopping while i get everything else ready for shabbat excellent okay devorah you have to remember these six things and maybe you can help devorah remember these six things are you ready first we're gonna need one challah that's the special bread we eat on shabbat now on shabbat night and shabbat day we like to use two challahs so i want devorah to get one challah because i'm gonna go to the bakery to pick up another special challah okay so that's one challah next to devorah we need a bottle of grape juice one bottle of grape juice all right next i'd like you to get one muffin okay one chocolate chip muffin that'd be great okay so so far we have one challah one grape juice one chocolate chip muffin are you ready the next thing i need you to get for me devorah is one potato all right one potato great next i need you to get one apple a red apple would be perfect thank you and last i'd like you to get one carton of eggs all right because we're gonna make some delicious shabbat that hashem commanded us to keep shabbat in the ten commandments it's written in the torah ki shaishit yamim asa hashem eta shamayim their torahs that for six days hashem created the whole world the heaven and the earth but on the seventh day on yom shabbat hashem rested and hashem blessed and made the day of shabbat very holy and we should do that too for six days we work and on the seventh day just like hashem we rest we don't do any work and we make the day holy and blessed we do this by making kidus having a beautiful shabbat dinner going to shul and doing some special prayers and of course resting from all our weekday work and instead using our time on shabbat to learn play with friends and spend time with our family [Music] shabbat is the seventh day of the week and it's known as the day of rest it's the day that we rest from all of our weekday work and instead do things for hashem like davin pray like eat together with our family go to schule spend time with friends and learn lots of torah so on shabbat we get to do something called menuha can you say that hebrew word menu is the hebrew word for rest and relaxation but during the week we do the opposite of menuha we do avodah work so i'm going to say the days of the week and you say if we have to do avodah or menuha on sunday avodah on monday avodah on tuesday avodah all right your turn to sing i'll say the days of the week and i want you to say nice and loud which thing we do avodah or menuha on sunday on monday on tuesday that's right on wednesday on thursday on friday [Music] that's right on shabbat on shabbat menuha and that's why we say to each other shabbat shalom because shalom could also mean to rest and to be calm and happy and together everything should be shalom or menuha have a great shabbat yom menuha devorah is off to the supermarket to do the shopping for rabbi b do you remember what she needs to get [Music] uh oh it looks like devorah forgot the list do you remember what rabbi b needs from the hamotzi section [Music] great memory rabbi b asked for one khala next do you remember what rabbi b asked for from the hagufen section did rabbi b ask for wine or grape juice [Music] that's right rabbi b asked for grape juice now do you remember what rabbi b wanted from the mizonot section did rabbi b want muffins donuts or cookies [Music] good remembering rabbi asked for one muffin [Music] now what did rabbi b want from the hates section did rabbi b want apples or oranges [Music] that's right rabbi be asked for one apple now what did rabbi b want from the vegetable ha adama section [Music] wow there were a lot of vegetables to choose from but you remembered that rabbi b asked for one potato great job last what did rabbi be asked for from the shahakol section [Music] that's right rabbi be asked for one carton of eggs let's make sure we got all the things that rabbi b asked for one chala one bottle of grape juice one muffin one apple one potato and one carton of eggs i think devorah's shabbat shopping is complete thanks for your help [Music] well now that devorah is on her way to the store to buy those special things for shabbat i'm gonna go stop by a very special bakery called surreal sweets to go pick up a very special khala for shabbat from my friend yaakov the baker so why don't you come along with me we'll go and check out this very special bakery and we'll see all the special treats that they have special for shabbat are you ready come on let's go [Applause] [Music] hey jacko hey how are you i'm good thank you how are you i'm good thank god i'm so glad thank you so much for letting me come and take a look around your bakery you're welcome we're happy to have you it's a wonderful place and i've never seen so much challah in one place how much cola do you guys make here a lot wow well do you mind if we take a look around the bakery a little bit of course well let's take a look [Music] i love visiting bakeries i love looking at all the things they make all those muffins cookies cupcakes oh my they sure do make all kinds of treats but my favorite thing to get at a bakery is khala but how do they make chala well first they put the flour and the water in this big mixing machine and it mixes it all around to make a dough then they put the dough inside of this machine what do you think this machine does let's take a look oh my that machine is very noisy aha that machine cuts the dough into even pieces and they take those pieces and they start rolling them around into these long lines i wonder what that baker is making it looks like he's making the letter x oh no that's not the letter x it looks like he's braiding achala oh that challah looks almost ready for shabbat now they brush egg on the khala to make them shiny and delicious then they slide the chala into the oven to bake peekaboo we can see you look at all those challahs they're sure getting big and toasty once the challahs are done they let them cool down on this big tall rack and some of them even get toppings like sugar [Music] once they're cool they package them in bags and sell them to people for shabbat wow that's a lot of bread and challah ready to be delivered to stores and people's homes but of course bakeries make all kinds of breads these ones don't even look like challahs but they sure look delicious [Music] you know i think there's one thing i want to buy for shabbat how about that chocolate chip cookie please thank you you know on friday afternoon there's just a little bit of time left to get ready for shabbat so i want to make sure that you're ready let's get ready let's get ready for shabbat for did you take a bath oh we gotta take a bath for shabbat here we go get your soap get your shampoo and let's take a bath here we go wash your hair wash your face wash your beard everybody wash your beard you don't have a beard all right wash your body wash your arms wash your legs wash your shoes your shoes you don't wear your shoes in the bathtub all right get the water running and let's make the water sound and rinse all the soap off [Music] did you dress your nicest you gotta get dressed in your nicest shabbat clothing all right get on your nice shabbat pants or some nice shabbat leggings very nice and how about a shabbat skirt or a dress for the girls and a nice shabbat shirt here we go and do up those shabbat buttons one and two and how about oh some nice shabbat socks one and two and some nice shabbat shoes one and two and your shabbat bathing suit shabbat bathing suit we're going to the shul not to the pool all right and all you jewish boys get your shabbat keep on your head and all you nice jewish girls get your beautiful shabbat hair band or ponytail wow you're looking really good oh we dress our nicest for shabbat well are we ready let's get ready for shabbat for shopbot did you set the table we gotta set the table for shabbat that's a great job that you could do to help your family on shabbat so get that shabbat tablecloth whoosh and now put on the challah board clunk and we use two challahs on shabbat and cover the kalas with the chala cover zoop oh let's put the candle sticks on the table ding ding and how about the kiddush cup on the table ding dong that sounds like the door maybe it's all of our guests quickly put out all the plates and all the napkins all the cups and how about a great big bottle of grape juice oh splash yes we set the table for shop but are you ready let's get ready for shabbat for shabbat did you say shabbat shalom let's say it together shabbat shalom [Music] well shabbat shalom i think we're just about ready for shabbat we'll see you soon shabbat shalom well it's almost time for shabbat and my favorite food to make for shabbat is called challenge challenge is a delicious dish that we eat on shabbat by day and it's a food that's warm because it's cooking all shabbat taking in all the flavors and the most important thing you need for challenge is a challenge pot that's the most important thing ah i don't think so rabbi b the most important thing you need for challent is the meat and potatoes and the pepper and the salt hey not so fast i think the most important thing you need for challenge is the dark kidney beans and pot barley yum okay maybe you need a lot of things to make talent let's all sing together one challenge pot two challenge pot three challenge pot four challenge pot five challenge pot six challen pot seven challen pot pot dark kidney beans and pot barley pot barley pot barley dark chidney beans and pot barley pot barley yum meat and potatoes [Applause] potatoes meat and potatoes pepper pepper pepper salt garlic potatoes [Music] there was once a very righteous farmer who lived in arizona isle he took very good care of all his animals each weekday the farmer would do his work around the farm he would cheer the sheep collect the eggs and milk the cows he'd also plant plow build few he would work all week long bon chabas the righteous farmer would rest from all the week they were because shabbos is a holy day and torah commands all jewish people to rest from all the 39 melakos on not only did the righteous farmer rest his whole family did too even his animals enjoyed a day of rest from their busy week too well one day the righteous farmer came upon hard times oy my dear family this year has been very tough for us there has been little rain and little crop the cows made less milk the sheep grew less wool and the chickens laid less eggs over the weeks the farmer's shabbos table became more bare with less and less food each week the righteous farmer decided that he would have to sell his strongest cow to bring in some much-needed fit money for his family on the next friday morning the righteous farmer took his cow to the market in order to sell it luckily he met a non-jewish man in the market who was looking to buy a cow as soon as the man saw the cow he knew he had to have it what a magnificent animal you have here strong legs good horns truly a wondrous creation is he for sale yes he is said the farmer but i am asking a very high price for him the non-jewish man agreed to pay the high price for the cow and an exchange was made the racist farmer was paid well and the non-jewish man had now had a strong cow for himself the non-jewish man brought the cow straight away to his farm and put the animal to work what a magnificent animal exclaimed the man as cow easily pulled his heavy plow across the field he was very happy with his purchase that is until the next day saturday morning arrived which for the jewish people was chavez but for the non-jewish man it was just a regular work day he went to the barn to get the cow ready and found the animal quietly resting on some hay come along now said the man time to get to work those fields won't plow themselves but try as he might the man could not budge the cow he pulled and pulled with all the strength but the cow would not move then he tried putting the plow harness over the animal's head but the cow just shook it off he was not working today you see the cow was so used to working for the jewish farmer that the cow thought it was shabbos for him too the cow was keeping shabbos but the non-jewish man was furious that jewish farmer sold me a lazy cow he only worked a little bit yesterday and now he's broken i want my money back immediately the non-jewish man marched to the farm of the jewish farmer and pounded on the door i want my money back you sold me a broken cow he worked and worked all day yesterday but today he won't even budge it's like he's taking the day off just then jewish farmer realized what was going on he began to laugh why are you laughing do you think it's funny that you tricked me not at all said the righteous farmer i think the cow is just keeping shabbos let me come to your farm and i will fix everything the two men walked together to the non-jewish man's farm the jewish farmer could see the cow in the barn laying down and resting like he did back at his own farm on shabbos the righteous farmer bent down to the cow's ear and whispered mr cow you were not commanded by the torah to keep shabbos only i was that's why you rested on my farm here your new owner does not need to keep shabbos so neither do you with that the cow stood up and walked over to his new owner ready to work the non-jewish man could not believe it he asked what did you tell the cow the righteous farmer explained everything to the man he told him all about shabbos and how the cow had gotten used to resting on the holy day the non-jewish farmer was stunned and then he thought about it if even a cow can understand the beauty of shabbos then maybe i should too he turned to the righteous farmer and asked him could you please teach me about shabbos i want to learn all about it and keep it too but you are not jewish explain the righteous farmer you don't need to keep shabbos the man decided there and then to become a jew so that he can also keep shabbos and follow in hashem's ways the man began learning torah he became a jew and chose the name yochanan ben torta translation yohanam the son of a cow wow what a beautiful day of arab shabbat of getting ready for shabbat we had thank you to all your help and thank you devorah for doing that big shopping now it's time to welcome in the shabbat and of course on friday night the jewish girls and mommies light the shabbos candles and of course the jewish boys and abbas make the kiddush and on friday night we are told that hashem sends special angels special shabbat angels to peek in our windows to watch and see that we are treating each other and of course treating shabbat with such love and respect let's get on our shabbat angel glasses and let's see if we can spot those shabbat angels peeking through our windows the shabbos angels are peeking through my window ema's lighting candles and ava's off to shul the shabbos angels are what a beautiful shabbat we had we sang songs and went to shul and had delicious meals and had delicious talent and learned so much torah but now shabbos is over and of course after shabbat comes a special time called motsei shabbat that's the time where we make havdallah and we say goodbye to shabbat and i know a really special song we can sing all about shabbat going away this is going away the skies getting dark it's the end of the day shabbos you really should know we're sorry to see you go you will come back next week we know you will come back for we love you so so let us thank hashem who will bring shabbos back again oh let us thank hashem who will bring shabbos back again and now we say to each other agutavach a wonderful week another special week to do all the things we need to do to get ready for the next shabbat oh it never ends every week we have shabbat thank you hashem for the most wonderful day of the week shabbat have a great week we'll see you next time
