Rabbi B today we're going to go visit a very special birthday party for a three-year-old boy it's a special party called an up Sharon up Sharon is a birthday for a three-year-old boy when a boy becomes 3 years old he gets his first haircut oh yes of course d'vorah when a girl turns 3 years old it's a very special birthday as well she doesn't get her first haircut but little girls who Turn 3 years old they get to start lighting shabus candles with their mommies and they get to have a wonderful wonderful birthday party too of course it's a wonderful age but you know oh d'vorah is wondering how come she never got her first haircut d'vorah you're a bee and animals don't usually get haircuts unless they're somebody's pet you see also d'vorah your hair does not grow very long at all oh and very scared for me oh d'vorah what are you scared about oh d'vorah is scared that my haircut might hurt me you know what why don't you come inside you'll sit with me during the haircut and then you'll see that it doesn't hurt at all all right let's [Music] go hey how are youy how you doing welcome introduce you to my friend over here this is Ellie he's a barber and what does a barber do haircut of course haircuts and I'm going to get myself a haircut but my little friend d'vorah the be she has some questions she's going to want to ask you so that's okay with you I think she get started yeah please okay awesome amazing [Music] all right that was a very comfortable chair yeah yeah it's like is a special chair for haircuts a special chair only for the haircut wow hey hi d'vorah oh d'vorah just met you for the first time oh she wonders you're taking off my yamaka is that do people take off their for the haircut okay so I'll take off my keepa that's okay dor I want glasses too oh see there you go d'vorah yeah I wear glasses I'm going to take my glasses as well here nicely than spr some water I'm ask you how do you like your haircut how should I get my haircut should I oh she says I should just keep it long and not cut it she's very scared that maybe it's going to hurt me is it is the haircut going to hurt me no not at all the haircut doesn't hurt oh great I'm looking forward to it then and theorious too so we're going to have the machine okay that that machine oh that's like a razor machine cutter all right sounds so nice and quietly no theor it doesn't hurt at all I don't even feel it it kind of feels a little tickly is good yeah that's good and how long have you been cutting hair Ellie 30 years 30 years wow and of course uh you know want to make sure that also my sideburns are called my PO right my posos and one also notices that when you cut the posos you don't cut it all the way down to the skin and we want to keep the payis together because in the Torah it says to have not to cut the corners of your hair keep it nice and neat oh she wants to know what why you're cutting with scissors oh sometime also we have to do the scissor blending nicely make some bangs some Chups how you call it any Chups so that's okay he's just cutting the hair and it's funny how Hashem made that the hair it doesn't have any pain you don't feel anything when you cut the hair [Music] oh Delora feels some warm air oh feels like a hair dryer oh give our like that that it felt very [Music] warm D'Or thinks it's funny that she never saw me without my yamaka before cuz I only take it off if I'm taking a shower or if I'm having a haircut yes thear wants to know if you're she hopes you're not going to cut my beard because she says she likes me with a beard no I'm not Rabbi V does not cut his beard Dora but a haircut on top and mustache and eyebrows nice and neat and [Music] clean oh she likes it it's very soft okay I'm going to ask you so how do you like your hair look and I like the way you look [Music] too well hi welcome to the big yellow couch special story today's story is called the ruga chover learns a lesson H let's begin the story Rabbi Yosef Rosen was also known as the rug go The Genius of rachov he was known around the Jewish world for his incredible knowledge of Torah but he is also known for having very long hair H d'vorah wants to know if he was a nazer oh that's a big word d'vorah you see a nazer was someone in the times of the B mikdash it was if the person wanted to only serve Hashem and they promised Hashem that they would only work in the BAM mikdash and they wouldn't do anything else so they wouldn't even go and get a haircut and AER would have very very long hair but you know what d'vorah I don't think the rug chover was a nuer but let me explain why he did have long hair he simply loved learning Torah so much so that he never wanted to stop learning unless it was absolutely necessary he would learn Torah all day long he just loved learning Torah so if he went to get a haircut he would have to take off his yamaka and he would have to stop learning Torah and this would actually cause him pain and make him upset so he never got a haircut he just let his hair grow long d'vorah wants to know how come I don't have long hair I also love to learn Torah too well I do love to learn Torah but I'm not a genius like the rug chover goon was and I'm not a sadic either and I think he might have been a sadik too and you see sadim and holy rabbi and Ritson like the Rach orone all they do is serve Hashem and learn Torah and do mitzvas but me sometimes I like to take a break sometimes I like to play with my friends or listen to music or take time to get a haircut those are things I like to do as well as learning Torah and doing Mitzvah but the rug goon's life was all about learning Torah and nothing else let's continue the story when the rug gone would teach a Torah class many of the fathers who came to learn would bring their children along the class was a little too old for the kids so the children would play outside the study room one day the children were making a lot of noise as kids do and they were being a little bit too wild suddenly a crash Was Heard and the father went out to see what had happened the rug go was so hurt that he had to stop learning Torah that he gave a big yell at the children telling them to stop playing so wild the men went back to the study hall to learn but the children were startled and did nothing they were too afraid to make any more noise they felt very bad the next day as the rug chover go own was about to begin giving his class he noticed that the Sho was very quiet a little too quiet he could see that none of the children had come along with their fathers they all stayed home instead the ruga chover Goon asked why didn't the children come today one of the fathers explained that the kids felt bad for interrupting the Torah learning and how they decided deed not to come to Shu anymore in case they did it again the ruga chover felt terrible he realized his yelling had caused the kids to stop coming to sh and this was not what he had wanted to accomplish he immediately apologized to all the fathers about his behavior and promised to make it right all the kids were brought back to sh the next day and the rug gone spoke to them in a kind and warm way about the importance of learning Torah and the importance of being respectful in a Sho and about the importance of not losing your temper he made a deal with the kids if they would agree to keep coming to SCH and just to play a little less wild then the ruget chover agreed to never again lose his temper and never to forget that kids could be kids sometimes from that day on the kids would play nicely and sometimes they would even listen in on the Torah class and the ruget chover kept his promise too he never again did anything to make the kids not want to come to Sho what a great story you know the rug chover was a great sadic but sometimes even great sikim forget that kids can be kids but even as kids we have to also remember that the importance of going to shul the importance of learning Torah and of course to do all those things in a respectful and kind way oh I think I hear someone who also never needs a haircut it sounds like coggle the robot let's go check it out I knew it was know more okay just say okay coule okay cougle you got it Rabbi B when a Jewish child turns three they have reached the age of education so we begin teaching them to do Mitzvah children can begin learning how to say Bros say Shama and more a Jewish boy begins wearing a yamaka and in situs and a Jewish girl gets to start lighting shabas candles you see the Torah Compares a Jewish person to a tree for example A Tree Grows from a sapling the sapling needs extra protection and help to grow big and strong the Torah commands us to leave the tree alone untouched for 3 years this Mitzvah is called Orla this allows the tree to keep the strength it needs to grow once a tree is three it can begin sharing sharing gets fruits with people and can begin to grow even stronger so too with you once you have 3 years of help and protection by your parents you can begin doing more things on your own you can run climb and clean up after yourself you can also start working with other people doing good deeds like sharing and helping your friends these Good Deeds are like the fruits from the tree so that's why at a birthday party it's a good idea to give toed and recite verses of Torah day we'd love to hear the question of the day okay cougle what's the question of the day hi Rabbi B my name is B and I have a question does anybody get a haircut in the Tyra wow butya that was a great question you know I'm sure there are some haircuts in the Torah but in order to find out we're going to have to ask the Torah Torah Torah are there any haircuts in the Torah yes there are first there are some laws about getting haircuts for example we do not have haircuts on chabis yam or during Spa in the nine days did you know there is also a law that says Jewish boys should not fully cut their poos sideburns the Torah says lo Saku pass you must not cut the corners of your head we also learn that a nuer when they finish their service gets a full haircut and has to bring a speci special corbon sacrifice Ys sadik got one too when ysep was coming out of prison to explain parro's dreams he had to get a haircut and change into clean clothes morai also did the same thing when he was being honored by King aash fos he had to get a haircut and put on clean clothes the midash even tells us that hamon was his Barber I hope this answers the question Rabbi B it sure did thank you Torah it's true what Ben BB says everything is in the Torah you know that gives me a really fun idea of a great craft we can do how about we meet in the arts and crafts room and I'll show you a fun hair cutting activity that you can do at home okay I'll see you there thanks again cougle you're welcome Rabbi B you know getting a haircut is really fun but it's not so fun to give yourself a haircut or your friends you can make a mistake you could make their hair look kind of messy so it's not a good idea to cut your own hair or your friend's hair so please don't but I have a great idea for a craft that you can do where you can cut the hair off of someone you know we're going to make ourselves some funny little haircut heads made out of paper construction paper now this guy made has really really really long hair and we're going to give him a haircut but first I'm going to teach you how to make one of them and it's very very easy you're only going to need a couple of things you're going to need some tape you're going to need some googly eyes a marker and a pair of scissors and some colored construction paper so the one I made was yellow and blue let's go with pink and purple what you're going to do is you're going to take your two pieces your pink and your purple or whatever two pieces of paper that you want to use and you're going to put them right on top of each other that way it looks like one piece of paper you're going to now take your scissors and very carefully you're going to cut long strips of paper but you're going to stop about about 3/4 of the way down which is leaving a bit of space that's going to be for your person's head we don't want to make the hair go all the way down to the neck you're going to keep making strips down to that same spot and keep going until you finish all the strips all the way [Music] down and always remember to be careful when you're using scissors and if the scissors are sharp just ask a grown-up to help you with this part and always keep your fingers away from the blades okay once you're done you're going to take your two pieces of paper now they're both going to have the same kinds of cuts they're both going to have the little bits of hair you're going to put your paper back on top of each other try to line them up perfectly and then you're going to roll the paper as big as you like I think we're going to use the pink side because it's nicer to have a light color for the face so you could draw some a nose or a mouth if you use a dark color it could work also but you may not be able to see your marker once you're done rolling we're going to use a little piece of tape you could also use glue but glue might take a bit too long to dry and we're going to make sure we tape the paper roll rolled up right on the seam right on the spot that the paper is open we're going to tape it up so that way it stays closed and there you go now our paper head is all ready to go we just need to add a face so we can take some googly eyes and we can put one googly eye on one side of the face and another googly eye on the other side of the face all right there we go so we have our two funny googly eyes and then you could use a marker to draw on a nose and a happy face maybe this guy has his tongue sticking out and some eyebrows and any other types of thing you want you give your guy some freckles you can give give her some anything you like now if you don't want to use googly eyes or you don't have any googly eyes you could just use the marker and you can draw on the eyes instead of googly eye so I'm going to use marker just for now even though I ripped the paper a little bit and just make some eyes one eye there and another eye over there okay so there we go we have some funny eyes and a funny nose and some freckles and now we're ready for the fun so I have my two little funny people ready for their haircuts now comes the fun part we're going to take our haircut person and with our scissors we can start giving them a haircut maybe the front hair you want to make a little bit shorter the back hair you could cut on maybe triangles and you could give your guy or your girl a cute funny little haircut oh the scissors even make the sound like Ellie the barber in our trip today to the barber there we go and maybe the front you want to make a little bit shorter like the bang those are called the bangs and then with the bangs you could even take the paper and maybe you could roll the bangs kind of make them like rolled a little bit you make kind of push the hair down a bit and you can make it kind of different styles and you can you could do any kind of hairstyle that you like well there you go so that's a funny way to make a haircut person out of paper and using scissors and glue and googly eyes a really fun way to give a haircut to someone without anyone getting in trouble well it does make a bit of a mess I'm going to go get the broom and we're going to sweep this up I'll be right back wow what a wonderful day we shared together I got my haircut and I find that my yoka fits much nicer when my hair is cut and of course we remember that every day when we go out we are presenting ourselves to Hashem and to all the people that we meet we should make sure to go out with clean clothes and nicely kept hair brushed and combed and cut when it's needed well that's all our
