Questions & Answers for making Pesach

okay time is 8:05 and one thank everybody for joining us on soom this evening for a special series of preparing for Pesach this is the second series my name is rabbi Ellis and director of community relations here at OU you kosher and it's my pleasure to be able to moderate tonight's proceedings we have a very special presentation lined up last week we discussed some of the ingredients and shopping for food products today we'll be dealing will we have the privilege of hearing from repetier Moshe elephant leads up or was the chief operating officer and executive have been a coordinator of or your kosher um will be answering many questions and answers that have already been sent in specifically with regards to questions that might be unique for this year especially with regards to medications and like as well the Seder and all other Pesach questions that come up as well we do have numerous questions that haven't been in for today's presentation we will go through those that were sent in first afterwards please feel free to use the chat function to either to send me any questions and if we have additional time we'll be glad to ask avails and those questions as well after you should be benched thank you will basically just jump into the questions that have come about Pesach I just want to know if you had any Horace or things you wanted to point out to start with well how could we not think about Pesach this year and it's a very unique manner under the environment that we live would we live under this cloud of the covert of the coronavirus and I think that we should be thinking this year Pesach as maybe the first time in many years a remembrance we will really feel what I felt like that year in me tryam where Cairo had just knock I saw with the Egyptians I just suffered the 10 Marcus and many times I think to myself you know the markets are so incredibly hard to fathom how entire country could be only getting blood or frogs all the other markets were pandemic so we see that it is able to be understood that you could have some sort of a pandemic that affects every single person in the entire world so if there was a pandemic that only affected the making their own Seder I just told somebody this afternoon I'm married quite a while and the halacha discusses that if you don't have any children to ask you to manage Donna then your wife should ask you to manage Donna and I never experienced that when we first got married with my parents to my in-laws and Denmark so we have children and grandchildren but it looks like this year we're going to be able to say that just my wife and I and my wife is going to ask me to manage Donna and so this year say there is going to be for all of us or for many of us most of us a new experience and for many of us it's going to be the first time I'm going to be making our own Seder and there's nothing to be concerned about making your own Seder is a wonderful wonderful experience and of course like a bell of correctly points out the first myth so that we do as we begin to say there on Pesach by night is the mitzvah of kiddush and the midst of the first of the four cups so we're supposed to drink four cups of wine D there is a discussion about how large the cups have to be the minimum amount is three fluid ounces the which is the opinion of ref high of Rome crime law the maximum amount is the opinion of the cousin ish which is approximately 5 ounces where my hell it's 3.3 ounces as the minimum size where a motion felt that you could for the first cup you should use a cup that you should use for points for answers of why also for the first three cups whatever of demands that you're going to use that we just identified you're using you only have to drink half of that so we have three ounces as the amount of wine you need to have you only need to drink an ounce and a half so even if you're taking the big amount of the Kazon issue of five ounces you only need to do two and a half ounces besides for the last cup of wine with there you should drink the entire cup of wine so again through you it's either three point three or five for the first or for the first cup four point four or five for the first three crops drink half the cup and for the landscape through the entire cup okay so we'll get to once we're talking about the case the question comes up a lot and actually a couple people just private message me as well what's the story with wine versus grape juice does it have to have alcohol in it what percentage of alcohol does have it need to have in it and people have also said they've heard about grape shoots being diluted and it's that contra for dollar cosa well I guess so wine wine versus grape juice what a month alcohol doesn't need and is there difference between using grape juice and wine okay so let's respond to all of your questions before they're great questions and terms of the question of wine versus grape juice so why comes with a preference the reason when wine comes with a preference is because part of the reason or one of the reasons we drink four cups of wine by the cider is to represent that we are showing that this is the night of freedom this tonight that was sitting at the seder representing that we are kings and princes kings and princes queens and princesses and just like kings and queens drink wine to show the freedom to show their loyalty it's appropriate to drink wine if possible furthermore if you can when it says that you have to drink wine I'm jumping to the other question rabbi Elif there's no weird is there any indication how much alcohol does wine need to have to be considered wine so nowadays where you have many of these wines available with very low alcohol no one that I discussed this question ever would said no that there's a minimum amount of alcohol that the wine has to have to be considered a wine if it has alcohol in it its wine so if you could drink low alcohol wine that that would be perfectly fine there also is a point if at all possible to try to use red wine during the Seder unless you prefer for taste white wine then you could take white wine but I usually recommend the people who prefer the white wines they should add a drop of red wine they should add a drop of grape juice and then you'll have it's red so you'll have the right color so again a low alcohol wine is preferable if wine is preferable low alcohol wine is 100% wrong if however even that is an issue for you so the purpose of the Seder is not to be a time of difficulty yes there's a very famous tomorrow the Gemara says that there was a certain Tanner who cannot drink wine he wine affected him badly and he used to have a headache from Pesach to Lewis from the wine that he drank at the seder that's probably because they didn't have low act with a wine it may be because this person was particularly sensitive I don't think that's what the hell Walker requests of us and therefore if you're an individual who can't drink wine the second best advice I could give you is to mix the wine with grape juice take grape juice and put some wine into grape juice if even that doesn't work for you so then the third option I then something called must masters grape juice but it's not the regular greatest at the bar in the store and the job and the glass container and the glass bottle or the plastic bottle which is pasteurized because once you pasteurize grape juice that greatest can never be why the pasteurization retards the fermentation process so that greatest can never be won but if you have grape juice which is must which is more grapes that were just whoa squeeze and we're not pasteurized we have to use it quickly because it's not pasteurized or only if you want but as long as you it's still fresh it's something that could turn into wine it can ferment into one since it could ferment into wine the Gemara says cited other Ashkelon of them a person could squeeze a cluster of grapes and you that for downward crisis for the kiddush so doubt Isis without a problem so again to his you bestest to use one even low alcohol wine makes no difference a little if you can't do that mix wine and grape juice if he can't do that you grape juice which is must if you can't find that when you can treat that then drink old-fashioned raisins but then as you asked for by Ellis there are individuals that have an issue with Rican grape juice particularly get this question all often from people who are diabetics and the grape juice comes for a high level of sugar so what after spending time with the greatest manufacturers we have determined that if you take regular ratings we could still dilute it with a third water and it still would be considered full fledged breakfast it would still be considered grape juice on which he can make a bundle in Korea Boston the only type of greatest we I can't make that recommendation is the light grape juice because the light grape juice is already diluted so they're diluting it further maybe initially but if you want you need to use break-ins and you need to use and you need to dilute the grape juice you may do so up to a third of [Music] okay thank you very much only to use machine matzah some are adamant don't use hand matzah what's the difference between two is their cashiers difference what should I be looking for well of course there are everything when it comes to taste that has to do with and hog everything when we speak about basic has to do with customs and I always tell people that they should follow their customs because we know we were speaking and we're going to speak and we should speak about the different mixtures that we perform on the night a pace that had to Seder who spoke about the cup of the wine already we were going to speak about the matzah we're going to speak about many of the different mitzvahs that we perform at the Seder but the most important so that we perform at the Seder is the middle of the gadigal of living creature on it so you have to make sure that the romaine lettuce you use is properly clean most most high c-can't are of the opinion that many use and we strongly recommend that that there are some very good romaine lettuce available that a pre-checked were very reliable supervision do you itself gives us Kaka to quite a few breads so if you're going to use romaine you that the pre-checked error pay sucks is busy enough that you shouldn't have to be worried about checking romaine lettuce and a keziah of romaine lettuce is the area that fills about 3 inches by 5 inches that's considered a cos iose of morale and you have to have a cause ice of morale fool when you do them it's immoral and then you have to have a cos is immoral a small coz ice is fine for that for when you're eating Kyrie the matzo and the morrow together but many people have the mini as you mentioned rabbi Elif not to use romaine lettuce they use coarse radish now it's very important I some reason this year particularly I'm getting a number of calls about this when we speak about horseradish you know the horseradish that you buy in the store there the prepared beets that they perhaps we called horseradish because they mix horseradish together with your beets that's not horseradish and that's not kosher for moral it's kosher tea with you the filter fish but it shouldn't be used tomorrow Mara means that you have the horseradish root that is ground into a a perro or flakes and that's moral the map that you should use the map that's considered a Casillas is anywhere from point seven fluid ounces to one point one fluid ounces again for the Mitzvah Maura you should probably use one point one fluid ounces and for the Mitzvah of Kyra you could use less okay thank you for with regards to Mart one of the question that came up is people are afraid of supplying the stores perhaps of more the conventional types the romaine and the horseradish is there any other types of vegetables that one could use from are those who are not available so I want to first say that I don't believe that there's going to be any shortage in either of those two types of moral we have been in contact with the people who are the manufacturers of what I mentioned a moment ago the pre-check Moreau and they're telling us that there's going to be plenty of the pre-check romaine lettuce available we're also being told that the horseradish root there will be plenty available and certainly is not something I'm strongly recommending but if you can't find the pre-checked romaine lettuce then you could buy regular romaine lettuce and just check it properly you could refute it you could refer to the oh you kosher web that gives you directions on how to check romaine lettuce but if neither are available the other option that many people can use are and dyes there are people that use endive smaller so if you can't find the other types I could recommend endives and I even remember that I heard many years ago there a baron coupler times of round cut with our coupler certainly they didn't have the pre-check romaine that we enjoy nowadays there Aaron Kotler held that the average even used regular lettuce tomorrow so I'm not in any way suggesting that that's what you should do I don't think regular lettuce is look up you could should be used look I feel as moral but if that's what happens that you won't be able to find any of what's known as moral that means the romaine lettuce or a horseradish or the endive and if you have no other option I guess you could use regular lettuce okay we're gonna kind of pivot over here from talking about the actual food products that the Seder to in the last you know a few minutes that we have to make most of it a lot of people concerned especially with the corona virus pandemic that's going on about medications and things like that so is there anything that you can recommend in terms of medications this year for Pesach cough suppressant sorta like that people will be able to use ok so I want to talk about medicine before we go into specific medicines I want to talk about medicine in general you know the halacha is and this is I guess if any year we need to speak about it this is the year we should be speaking about it the tower gave us mitzvahs there we should be healthy the Torah wants us to be healthy that's the first myths of the Torah wants us to focus on there are very few situations where the observance of a mitzvah or the doing there are various seeds once health so therefore I get many questions about different medicines that people have to take and what should they do altes us I my response very very firmly is that if you have a chronic disease and I want to explain what I mean when I say you have a chronic disease it doesn't mean cancer Sholem you're laid up in the hospital if you're laid up in the hospital then of course they're gonna you're just gonna take whatever they give you but you have a chronic disease someone responds one has a heart condition hypertension diabetes cancer and they have to take medicines my recommendation to you now my recommendation my directive to you is take the medicine that you're supposed to take just take it if however you are not in such a chronic situation or even if you are in a chronic situation but you have an option and you can take a medicine which is a pill that you just swallow or you could take a medicine which is a pill that you chew or a liquid that you drink the best always isn't unless it's certified so pesach the best choice is to take something that you just swallow could that's something that should like you that I feel awful you're not eating it you're not chewing it you're just swallowing it and that's the most preferable if however the medicine that you need to take is not available and that type of a swarm and again if it's a chronic situation to then do what you have to do but if it's not a chronic situation it's not available in a pill form then that's something you may want to consider avoiding on Pesach so going back to your point rabbi Ellis in this year of the corona virus if people are being instructed to take different medicines they're being instructed to take course medicine our information is that the robitussin doesn't have any comp doesn't have any trace in it we're not a hundred percent sure about the comments but again if you need to take it because it's a chronic situation follow the advice that I just gave you a pill that you swallow is best next a pill that you chew and next a liquid that you drink so once we're talking about the medication since like things that go into your mouth there's been a lot of questions about any toothpaste mouthwash lipsticks and like what's the story that can people use I do they need to cross the penstock what can they use on pacer in that regard so again my personal feeling I shouldn't say my personal feeling because my personal feeling is not that important whether belsky felt this way as well if at all possible if you have toothpaste or mouthwash that is kosher for Pesach and there are more and more brands that are manufacturing toothpastes and mouthwashes that are kosher for basic our recommendation is that's what you should buy for Pesach the toothpaste is going into your mouth the mouthwash is going into your mouth we're so careful I think tonight's program is a testimony to that how we're so careful about everything that we ingest on Pesach so we're gonna be so careful about everything we ingest on Pesach this should be no difference and we should be very careful if possible to get toothpaste or mouthwash with a supervision for Pesach if however they are not available there are I have here rabbi besan boy that he puts out every year that he's kind enough to share with us with his recommendations and that quite a number of toothpastes that he recommended that he says he's investigated in a fine for Pesach pull the aim products the aquifer products the Colgate products the aura gel products the prevalent products so those he says he's checked they don't have special for Pesach supervision but he says he's checked them and they're all unacceptable to the use for Pesach the same when it comes to math wash he also has some math washes that he has shed here on page 42 that he says are acceptable for Pesach again just to list some of them he has the Armand Hammer products the Listerine products scope and oral gel as different products that he's recommending as bath washed that can be used on Pesach again my personal feeling the state and this was the opinion that we who had the privilege of working together and learning by hrabowski that if you could buy a product with a kosher supervision for Pesach that would be even more preferable so a couple more questions just came in right now about some of the medications are there any prenatal medications prenatal pills that were recommending yes do you in conjunction with Maxie health sir certifies the small prenatal caps for Pesach but you have to make sure that the container you purchase has a sticker that says it's come true and then another question someone knows he mentioned taking swallow pills when their chronic what about song is not chronically ill but once they swallow pills so again if it's not a chronic situation and it's a swallowable pill and the doctor is recommending that you take it there's room for leniency okay we're just gonna go to one question about kashering that came up over here and then you know looks like we're almost running out of time for this part a lot of people it's hard to make pace talk a lot of people especially that are in the demographic that have tuned in tonight are in small apartments and the like normally we say for Ashkenazim that they can't toss her glass is there any suarez to say they could be lenient this year and be able to toss her glass other was yours of comment so again as you correctly indicate rabbi LF people of Ashkenazi custom don't cache the glass to pacer far than bukai chandelier surveys are the two leading sees that I would recommend if you know for a fact that your glass that people that called me that they are special wine glasses that they know that they only use for wine a whole year they don't put any other liquid nothing happen uh from old Nazi comments so I'm not ready to take it on my shoulders but I could see room for some leniency what I can recommend is if you need to use your glass that you have your comments to the glass and you want to use that for Pesach what you could do is cool nealy really soak the glasses in water for 24 hours then change the water and then do that again for 24 hours and then do the third time for 24 hours and then even people of Ashkenazi descent to do those glasses with ice a reality wise my personal recommendation is that don't just too much to do before Pesach there's no reason to change and I keep on repeating tonight you cost them and you could buy very nice disposable glasses nowadays and use that to pace us and avoid the question okay I'm a couple similar questions that came in are if someone usually has a water cooler in the kitchen can they you used that cooler on Pesach has both a hot and cold nozzle and maybe the similar way that a flower of Oz on a common staple could I use that as well so in terms of the water cooler what I recommend is that it's the only reason for cold that's fine but if you don't only use it for cold especially the spigot the pot where the water comes out you need to be concerned and let's say I had something hacked that was coming and I was filling it up with from my cooler so that spigot might have become common stick and you should cashew it now the oles position is that a plastic spigot can be Tasha the Moshe Feinstein's position was that plastic should not be taught showed so if you could get a new spigots a pacer that would be best if you can't get a new stick it then just pour over it boiling water and if you use it to pass off okay it looks like we're out of time over here every elephant I want to thank you very very much
