Q&A Series - Part 1 - Video Production Process

[Music] hey guys what's going on we're gonna do a little question answer series a few months ago i put a little question thing on my instagram if anyone has any questions about the process of making a music video or making videos in general we got a bunch of questions we're gonna go through them question number one how do you make smooth moves with a camera without using any stabilization in post the obvious answer to that is a stabilizer slash gimbal whatever you want to call it you need a gimbal or stabilizer to get smooth performance shots it is the number one thing that you need to get it takes a little bit to learn how to use it once you use it your shots will be smooth now again there might be some jolts or some bumps most of these programs i use premiere pro have a effect called warp stabilizer a warp stabilizer will only work on shots that are already smooth they just have some minor jumps if you have a camera that's going like this and you add warp stabilizer it won't work so yes you need a gimbal you need a stabilizer that will pretty much make the shot smooth and then you if there are certain jolts you can add the warp stabilizer effect which will smooth those out one thing you should keep in mind is a gimbal is not the always the answer smooth footage isn't always the answer for a long time i thought oh yeah gimbals you have a stabilizer you have a gimbal that's it you're professional for a while all my shots were smooth until i realized that certain times you're not meant to use a gimbal you're not meant to have a smooth shot for example in the semi-liner video i'll pull up the clip here when shua is running through the dining room trying to find some liner the camera is shaky there's some smooth footage some shaky there's a lot of shaky footage because i'm trying to bring out a certain emotion trying to show that he's he's nervous he's he's trying to figure things out he's like he's looking around he's trying to figure out what's going on if he was running around the camera would just [Music] perfectly smooth you wouldn't feel it now he's running around the camera's shaking he's banging into people and the camera kind of keeps panning back and forth and it gives you that feel it brings you into the video it captures the audience so yes the gimbal is not always the answer but gimbal is definitely something that's extremely extremely important i have designed weeble s i actually just ordered the dji rs3 depending on what your camera setup is certain times you need more weight so you need to have a stabilizer that's capable of more weight but they're all good they're all great get yourself a stabilizer but don't overuse it next question is it premiere or final cut i use premiere pro i have no preference with any of these things i always say whatever you're used to use if you're used to premiere keep using premiere if you use the final cut keep using premiere people stuff people start using davinci whatever it is stick to what you're used to i say the same for windows and apple whatever you used to stick to if you want to change you could but just be ready for a big adjustment they both all these things are very very different again they're all video programs but they take a while to get used to and i don't know i just spent years on figuring out premiere and i always say with adobe programs you could always figure new things out i still figure new things out on adobe i would say whatever you're used to whatever you started on just keep doing it unless it's just a terrible program you know what i'm saying next question what is a good camera in the lens to get now again this very much depends the other day i posted on my story about how amazing and awesome b h is any of your questions and anything you want to know about cameras lenses lighting or anything you call them up they give you information you tell them how much you want to spend and they'll tell you exactly what to get they're amazing if you're wondering my opinion let's say you're you want to start doing videos or whatever it is i would say i started off with the sony alpha series i think it was like the sony a 5000 or a 3000 they have different versions i don't remember exactly which one they had but they're not that expensive you could probably get them for like a couple hundred dollars they're great cameras regards to the lenses there's a lot of different options to get depending on how much you want to spend because literally there's tons of sigma lenses there's sony lenses for whatever your range is a couple hundred dollars one thing i i think is very important is don't get like a ton of equipment right away i myself happen to not have a lot of equipment people i know people guys that are doing this that have like 20 000 lenses and 15 000 cameras and yeah it's an exaggeration but i have one camera and one lens right now sometimes i'll have to rent lenses if it's very important but you don't need a million pieces of equipment i think my music my music videos are pretty good quality and they look amazing so it's just i think it's proof that you don't you don't need a million things you don't need you don't need a crew of six thousand people you don't need again obviously depends on the project but i always say you don't need to overbuy over buying is silly i'm trying to make a music video for a friend what is the cheapest way i can do this honestly you want to do a cheat music video it's really not that hard i've done this for singers i've done this remember in the beginning when i was starting locations there's tons there's tons you go to new york you can go to be to your backyard in your house to a pool you know make a fire like there's so many ways you could get a free or cheap location but you have your camera you have the singer just walk around just go to random places and by each location right let's say you go to the city he's walking down the street my only tip i would say is get three shots that's always i say is the minimum a wide medium and a tight now again how wide how medium how tight that's up to you now again you might want to get also let's say b-roll right you want to get some let's say you're walking through the city right so you get some bureau of buildings so other people walking by of you know a ball rolling down the street or a cat or whatever it is but cheap music videos are very easy to pull off just walk around new york or go into your backyard or go to a nice house just set it up shoot a couple of shots in each location and there you go
