Project Inspire 2020 Motzei Shabbos Program

ladies and gentlemen buckle up here we are the mutts of Shabbos program the 11th annual project inspired convention exactly one year ago last November I got involved with project inspire project inspire has been a wonderful experience for me because it's shown me what there is to the Judaic world that I was missing out on and why it's important to share without it project inspire is the Royal Organization for outreach in the world today after he got involved in project inspire and I'm a lot of the families and started going to their homes regulated for Shabbos I wanted to change something in my life and I wanted to raise my children the way that I father's family is raising their children both of my parents had been on trips with Frederick this fine I wonder came home they wanted the family to be more connected since then I love the house and Jewish community and our home became closer by our family is more connected to Judaism definitely products inspired helps Jews connect them all over to their roots project inspires an outstanding organization and they've enabled regular ordinary people to tap into a potential but they just didn't know if they had I don't know where I would be on my Jewish journey without project inspire they've really helped me understand the beauty of being Jewish I find that the more I get involved the more I realize how in common we are the common denominator is Jewish Jewish Jewish and I love working with them and sharing thoughts and ideas and my growth certainly comes from them as well it's not just me inspiring them they're inspiring me I've had a lot of growth since my initial introduction to project inspire I made a yes I'm living in Israel I'm married we have a beautiful daughter that you'll ask there because we project inspire went to showers of friends for Judea Judaism started keeping kosher and the whole family is connected project inspire really has made a tremendous impact on me and my wife and my family and my community as well I'm absolutely grateful raju inspire because it got me moving in the right direction [Music] [Applause] good luck everybody are there any words to be said after this spectacular Shabbos besides Wow for 1,100 people to come together for a Shabbos like this for the 11th annual convention is truly spectacular how can I stand here in front of you without thanking the speakers and presenters that have come from around the world to spend Shabbos together with us from IRA and who completely blew us away Friday night from Yankee sax his airplane ride and who didn't shed a tear when Eric Hirsch spoke to us this morning we even learned a lot about Santa Claus but most importantly as you learned over this Chavez we project inspire all of you in this room and the entire firm community are tasked with finding the other millions of Jews who are not being reached that's our job and while it's a tall order we got a glimpse of all the breakthroughs that are taking place throughout the world women like Robin Morrison and Karen Caplan and this is Enzo buck and Michelle Mandal min and Deena Koerner and Martha Hershkowitz and a vvu dagen and the list goes on I want to thank Stuart and Andrea hypeman who have made this Shabbos as well as everything at project inspired possible [Applause] for the past number of years Isaac and Edie Gross have been the sponsor of the Shabbos project what we call the body and soul retreat how many of you here were at the body and soul retreat this year this shabad project is a worldwide movement that began in South Africa and we are honored to be the host of a spectacular retreat in the New York area this past year over 900 Jews of all affiliations and backgrounds packed the wood cliff leg Hilton including families that were sleeping in RVs in the parking lot just to get a space had this amazing weekend all the people who are wearing the RVs are clapping but I want to relay a story to you that happened just a couple of weeks ago and I hope that Isaac won't charge the stage ready to kill me for this we were in his office discussing the Shabbos project for this coming year and shortly before that Isaac Rose have gotten off the phone with someone who has explained in that in a nearby town which will go unmentioned but really close to home if you're from the New York area there are thousands of Jews they even affiliate themselves with Orthodox jewels and yet he found out that they don't even eat in kosher restaurants and as a tear trickled from his eye he said guys we need to do better we need to do this better we need to do more and so if there's one message we could take from this Shabbos and for all the programs that we're running as if we could feel that pain to be able to shed an honest tear over the state of Claudia's role today we will do better Isaac and Edie we strive to do better and to follow in your footsteps as people who love the Jewish people ladies and gentlemen I share with you a film created of the small memory glimpse into the memories of the Shabbos project body and soul retreat 2019 so we've been here Chavez project at the body and soul retreat and it's been just like one awesome [Music] so the reason we're here today is because observing fairness has reached out to our community that helps to bring anybody that has a Jewish soul to experience what Shabbos is like to learn what makes us Jewish and how we can grow as individuals the body and soul Shabbat project was the first Shabbat song that I've ever been to and it's inspired me to really explore my Judaism and become more connected with it you really realize that all Jews are one and we're all connected in many many ways and it's just a great great experience the Shabbat project every opportunity we have to come here I know will be at its the great opportunity to just reconnect and really get that full Shabbos experience body and soul the shabbat project will change your life forever [Applause] [Music] people thousands of people would wait to hear your advice you build such a huge Empire but that wasn't enough for you you always looked what else could I do how could I touch another Jewish person I've seen personally that your greatest pain was that you felt that you failed in your mission as far as you concerned if there's one Jew that's not connected with his father in heaven then you felt a personal failure as you always said for this we need a very strong army for years you spoke about the sleeping giant us the firm community some of your greatest meetings and the last months of your life that I was there you would speak the great rabbis leaders robe aim and you would always speak out the sleeping giant and how much potential we have to change the world now I'm standing here in this room of so many people that have one thing in mind how could we how could we do more for the Jewish people after such amazing Shabbos and meeting so many people that are taking project inspire and making it a reality I want to tell you Allah the giant is not sleeping anymore [Applause] although the giant is just waking up but he's not sleeping the giant knows today that we have so much work to do and is excited to do it and is dedicated to do it ABBA if I may ask just as you have pray in your life pray for us please pray that we should know as you used to say that sham cares about this to be able to involve people and we realize that not every program is going to be cookie cut for the people that we want to reach and so the idea came up in the project inspire office that maybe we should figure out a new type of a trip a new type of a way to engage people where maybe it's not so expensive or it's not so much time away from home and so we created a model of three-day retreats we began with a trip to Kentucky in which 50 from and on from men went together to learn and of course to tour the distilleries of Kentucky most of the people don't even remember that they were on the trip together we learnt together we shared life experiences and of course we had a great time together and then the women complained what do you mean you take the men to Kentucky what about us so we planned a trip to Fort Myers Beach and again a group of 50 women half from half not from a ratio that we've learned their project inspire was so powerful for the relationships that are created and we shared three days in which women had a great time did not drink bourbon when parasailing and of course square dancing I kid you not ladies and gentlemen we're trying to push these trips out at a faster pace because we know that we have an opportunity and a responsibility to involve many more people I present to you a synopsis as well as information on the upcoming trip to South Carolina completely awake and the doctors came to explain to her that there's no more chance that she will live - if she wants to be an arrest Raider or she doesn't want to be in a respirator and legally because she was completely in mind she had to decide so they explained her you for sure will die in 48 hours the most 60 hours we want to know if you want to suffer for a couple more hours or not this is possible again and they had to explain to her very clearly but there's no chance she asked them maybe one out of a billion they told her not one out of a billion they asked if it could be a nest she asked them they said ashame could do everything but we never saw some of our liver that could live because even if you all live you will die again because you don't have a liver anyway we standing around her bed and you know the kids want to dive in but it's very hard to dive in the doctors said very clearly that is nothing left but we are Jewish people we have to dive in and all the kids were together only the kids in the room and we don't know what to do the kids tell me tell us tell us what to do how we could have and how we can have it I thought I want to tell you the Morrises and first I called my wife and I told her I'm coming anyway say no no no don't come I said okay if you don't want me to come I will stay I spent it doing the other way around yeah I don't know what to do I'm standing in the airport and this girl comes over to me I'm here with a group if birthright I think was 50 or made me I think more 75 boys and girls but like a group that they didn't know what is nothing and we don't know what to do to go and the flight and I think on the flight we cancel this flight we don't know it loud says they will never give us back the tickets this kids never kept Shabbos such opportunity of Kirov we don't know what to do so you know all the kids came up fur and I asked them if they heard about bielski said bielski I said to him - oh you like a circle and a half a circle yeah they said they know about that so we called up a bell city and they said whatever bielski will tell us to do we will do you know we're calling her by Belski for sure they're not allowed to fly so I told the kids you know you're not allowed to fly so the kids came over and told me rabbi we know what will happen you will go back to Lakewood we came from my Aki and all these names yet we don't have where to go if you promising us you're staying with us for Shabbos we're staying if not believing I said I'm staying with you and Shabbos the pilot came out and started telling us you know I'm going to fly quicker he has to go on the plane and I thought guys don't go it's and he's silent all the kids are standing near me the airport is empty already everything is inside the plane takes off with the suitcases we were left without clothes and believe me they never had clothes these kids so we were left completely you know I please had a jacket they did not have nothing not sleeves and wrists yeah okay back and forth they put us in the Ramada Inn and knork I wake up in the morning and you know I realized what group I am only understand what happened over the night here yeah I called my Rebbe an LLC soil the schmira Shabbos kilo so now this law was really almost Shabbos when I said rabbit I promised them to stay but you know my English guy I don't know what to tell everybody knows me actually you don't know me because he'll Oh my name is David Cohen not that David Cohen the other one I I've been asked to come and talk to you guys tonight and it's amazing because I am from a small town in Oregon my parents divorced when I was two and they my mom took us and moved us to the most rural place she could find away from any Jews no Jews anywhere as a matter of fact I was sent I think from Hashem to one of the four corners of the world and that's where I ended up with no friends that were Jewish no shul nobody and I grew up that way I had a grandfather though that was somewhat religious I went down and visiting him a few times one time he pulled me aside and he said when I was about 8 years old he said David I want you to know something this is very important you're a Cohen and I thought that eight years old I thought that's very strange that he would tell me what my last name was but I figured hey I made what do I know so I went with it years later I found out why but at the time nothing I actually had the opportunity as I we were we were flying over here I just got to tell you this one I know I'm off script I'm gonna get a lot of trouble but I swear I'll stand time like everybody else I I we were we were going through the airport in Israel checking through security there was this very strapping young man with this gun and he he asked me where we were going and I said we're gonna go to New York and then he asked me you having weapons and I said do you think I need him and he looked at me said why oh maybe but anyway so about three years ago my son's well I married my wife who was my college sweetheart who was so right with it and at the time I didn't know that a Cohen should marry a Jew I didn't know anybody should marry a Jew I just figured you're married so I married my wife who at the time happened to not be Jewish as far as we knew and then we had four boys and we picked out names for them each of them we picked out a name we looked at him and it wasn't the right name and then another name came to us so we have four boys each of them were named by Hashem and I didn't even know at the time why what was happening you guys know but now I know why we had to pick different names so we have four boys are grown their names are Joshua Daniel Jacob and Zachary five months ago we made aliyah to Israel we live in Suffolk two of my boys are there with us but I'm getting ahead of myself because through a project inspire that's why I'm staying here today three years ago we didn't know what even Shabbat was I didn't know anything I knew because I went to yeshiva Fiddler on the Roof how to speak some tea brew and it goes something like yeah ddddd I'm not really good with my Hebrew but you guys probably know what it is and I knew that it was very very important that we kept traditions unfortunately we had no traditions so we made up our traditions and I'll get to that in a second I swear I won't go too far so my boys were sitting there and they were asking I shared with them you're Jewish or Jewish you need to know you're a Cohen my grandfather told me so I figured they needed to know and they and I said that would you would you guys like to start keeping some Jewish traditions and I thought oh man this is bad groan right and they're not gonna want to do this and they looked at me and said dad yeah we've been waiting what do you do and they looked at me and I was looking at them and they were looking at me and then I realized they think I'm the guy that knows and I don't know so I went online and I found this wonderful site called Asia Torah and I've this is something very important for everybody to understand who for knew when you reach out to somebody that has no experience you know no experiences being a Jew we're terrified that you guys are going to hate us we don't think we think were the outsiders we want so much to be part of this group we in my soul I yearn to be a Jew but I thought you know my grandparents fell away my parents weren't even religious I grew up for 50 some years not doing anything why would you guys want me to be a part of this holy group so when I went on a I thought I look up what you do on Shabbos and all of a sudden a pop-up screen came and there was rabbi broker saying how can I help you I never talked to a Jew before and here's a rabbi that wants to talk to me so I quietly closed my computer walked away you wouldn't know who I was so then the boy said well what'd you find out he saw the computer crashed just nothing no power and and then I I went back the next day and I got up the courage and I decide you know I'm going to talk to the rabbi and so it popped up again and he said what can I do for you and I said rabbi there's so many things I don't even know where to start but my family would like to start keeping Shabbos we don't know how so he said you know what it's very simple just do some easy things get a couple loaves of bread get some wine get it get a cup couple candle holders something to cover your your hollow with gotta remember my wife is not Jewish right but she is because that day I gave her a list and she said you know what up in the Attic is my grandmother's Hope Chest and I think there's stuff in there like that some silver stuff so he went up there and brought it down and there was everything we needed was in there and it was so weird cuz I was like wow this is weird what the coincidence that with this would happen I didn't put two and two together tel years later no actually hasn't been even years but I so we got it we put it out and and my son was looking at the cup and he looks at he goes hey look there's looks like Hebrew on it and I looked at and I said yeah it probably said made in Israel and put it down didn't think anything of it but that was our first Shabbos and it was wonderful so here's where the tradition start we we knew that you're supposed to sing I mean people sing it Shabba supposed to be a fun time right and so I thought what let's let's get a song and so I looked up online and I I know I found a song that we could actually sing and my boy my boys maybe a promise that I wouldn't do this but I'm do it anyway I'm gonna sing for you when you get a chance really you know so here's a song I wrote the lyrics out for everybody and gave it to them at at the table I learned the tomb beforehand and told him just jump in when you're ready and the song goes something like this hey hey yeah but show but shabbat shalom hey i sang in front of all these people yes that's great ok not so bad I'm in big trouble so anyway we we we would dance that every at Shabbos all the time we would dance and we would sing shabbat shalom and we come around and hug now when we found out that my wife had this connection we looked into it and found out that her great-grandmother was a Holocaust survivor we had no idea she had no idea the family kept a secret she she went through everything the horrors of the Holocaust and then fled to the United States and hid away not knowing if it was safe in in Oregon she will say she hid and didn't tell anybody didn't talk to the family about it but they but they and and the family knew that there was there was just something empty there there was nothing there there was a void they wouldn't she wouldn't talk about the family except say that everybody in the family died and so we thought maybe well maybe they were like high-ranking military or something we didn't realize it and later we found out that she was a Holocaust survivor so I contacted like I said rabbi broker got back in touch with him told him how much fun we had and how wonderful Shabbat was we have not mrs. Shabbat dinner since that day that was three years ago thank thank my son's will make sure that I do it every week no we look forward to it but he realized he said you know what you need more than what what I can give you and he recommended that I get hold of project inspire project inspire set me up with a wonderful Torah teacher we learned Burke a vote we learned the poor Torah polish portion we learned we learned from Torah he taught me the how to read so I could do the the prayers in Hebrew and I just want to say that we made as you know what we made aalia's last year 11th five months ago we made all eh spot and it was because of project inspire that I'm here today that we're there and that my family now is part of this great family and we do not feel like we're off by outside day I reached out the project inspire and requested to sign up for a learning partner two months past no one contacted me part of me was even relieved shortly thereafter I received a phone call from
