Part 2 How Missionaries radically change the Biblical Text with Rabbi Tovia Singer

[Music] there was a great rub who lived a number of centuries ago his name was the dividend market he was able to convey rather complex ideas through a parable by telling a story there was a prince grew up in his father's palace had anything he wanted as you can imagine he was a very privileged young man but there was one thing that he craved deeply and that was freedom his father was very worried about him he was after all the heir to the throne and his father never allowed him to leave the grounds of the palace never had a moment to himself and they could see from where he slept every night from the window he could see a beautiful forest in the distance he had never been there he can only gaze at it wonder what it would be like to be there and he devised the plan how he would have a moment to himself in a farce that he can only dream about he knew when the guards changed in the very early morning and he created a distraction and he was able to escape and he's walking through a forest and he by himself and just looking and wandering it and he noticed that there's a tree and on the tree there was an archers target northern archers targeted I'm sure there are many hunters here you know it's a concentric circles each one a different color and clearly someone had already been there why there was an arrow shot into it not only was an arrow in the target but the arrow whoever shot it a perfect bullseye right in the center circle he thought since a while whoever took this shot very very skilled Archer thought about it I think kept walking he didn't walk that far and he comes across a second tree with a target on it again the arrow was in it it was a perfect bullseye two in a row my father's best couldn't shoot this way he must be very very skilled when it keeps walking and you couldn't figure out where this is going a third tree 4/5 each one perfect bullseye he comes to the tenth tree and there's a big fat fellow underneath it with a bow in his head he runs over ten sir are you the one who shot all these permit and the guys proudly says I am he said I'll tell you the truth I don't know any one of my father's own circle his own security team his most elite forces can't shoot this perfectly how do you shoot what's the perfect accuracy now as the princes going long he's stunned by this the front man begins to left that locked he's laughing and laughing and laughing and the prince finds us to be a rather strange response and instant sir why are you laughing he said young man let me explain to how I do this the first thing I do when they take an arrow and I shoot it into a tree and then I paint a target around it Christianity did not begin in a vacuum rather the Christian religion began with the claim that Jesus is the Messiah the word Messiah is a unique Jewish term and the idea of a messiah is conveyed to us in the Hebrew Scriptures and the church wants you to know that you need to believe in Jesus in order to be saved and this has to be proclaimed to the world but in order to convey that Jesus was the Messiah the church essentially had to do two things number one Jesus life had to be forged shaped in a way that would somehow fit messianic parameters found in Tanakh in the Hebrew Bible - and most germane to this evening's presentation the church altar tonight the church changed the word of a sham the church changed the text of our Bible not the original Hebrew no one could touch that but they changed the text in the translations so that our Tanner would pass for Khalil appear to be speaking about no one other than Jesus who died for your sins now I want to share this with you we tonight are not going to have enough time to explore every single passage that missionaries employ in order to convince others to believe in Jesus although there'll be a Q&A session after and of course I welcome you to ask about any passage my goal for this evening's presentation the second of three presentations is I want to take you by the hand and I want to explore with you with the methodology the techniques that were used by the church to alter our holy scriptures so it appeared to be speaking about Jesus and as you know well I think many of you here know this personally from what you shared with me that Christians do not read the Bible in the Hebrew language Christian children are never taught the Hebrew language a Christian grows up in Houston Texas grows up in Los Angeles grows up in Denver it doesn't make a difference he grows up in Geneva they're not taught Hebrew that taught all of the language is the English that taught Latin I don't know who the Latin they teaching Latin imagine Latins really just Latin is the official language of the Roman Empire that destroyed the base I'm a douche could you imagine teaching these young minds the language of their doom the language of Rome this they learned but the language of a Bible they are taught to believe is the word of God Christians believe that our Jewish Scriptures are a Hebrew Bible is divinely inspired and heaven breathed that's the language of the church and Hebrew they don't teach the one child in Kansas it not one Christians can learn Hebrew in this seminaries later on when they go to Dallas Theological Seminary full of theological seminary Houston Baptist they can go there they could take courses in Hebrew they're already they're 20 years old and they are completely committed and they're completely invested in Christianity and at that stage of the game they're learning Hebrew just the outlines how to read it there are some studious kids but at that point they're fully committed to the Christian religion and then they're looking at the Jewish Scriptures through a crystal logical grid through a theological filter of the church it's too late this is a monumental point in every religious Jewish time I just using the word religious in a meaningful way and as broad as possible meaningful way as Boersma I don't mean Hillary Clinton's I'm spiritual that I don't know what that means I'm talking in a meaningful every Jewish home has a if they're religious in some self-identifying way in a genuine way they have in their home a Hebrew Torah some people may not be well studied in it but if someone is an observant legitimate Jew has one every little child is taught the Hebrew language as you'll find out this evening that if the church would simply teach its young men and women its children they would have a serious membership problem because they would have access to the original they wouldn't have to rely on translations the first and most important technique used by the church to demonstrate to you that Jesus is your promised Jewish Messiah is that a passage a verse sometimes a chapter is ripped out of context this is called an ice ax Jesus as opposed to an exegesis and next to Jesus means that you're using the surrounding context in order to interpret a passage and I saw Jesus's you are utterly ignoring and jettison the context and by doing that I can convince you that you need to accept Jesus in your life their technique is always used every missionary text is always without exception ripped completely out of context in missionaries they get these communication card they get a card a fulfillment card it says this is what Jesus did and this is a phone an Old Testament verse and they're supposed to memorize the stuff you have a stay in a hotel in North America right you're in the hotel room and so I want a a little bit the furniture next to the bed there's a little my table right so there's a drawer with a handle you grab it and you give it a good slip and inside the drawer you can have two books the more to the left is a phone book but it's that burgundy book on the right the Holy Bible placed by the Gideons that's what we're interested in it opens up on the opening Paris pages of just quoting verses completely out of context of why you need to accept Jesus and how you can rinse your friends and family that they need to as well fulfilling the Great Commission of Matthew 28 let me give you an example of this in the book of Matthew stop as it turns out when we study this Jewish Christian clinics the book of Matthew is going to come up more frequently than any of the book in the Christian Bible is there anyone here that can explain why Matthew will be coming up over and over and over again nothing nobody want TV had nothing well as it turns out we don't know who Matthew is we use the word Matthew but the book was written anonymously no one knows who wrote it well we could say about him with certainty say a few things about him we say about the author of the book of Matthew that he had mark in front of him because he quotes almost all of it as does Luke whoever wrote this book was a highly literate Christian who lived toward the end of the first century probably in the 80s certainly saw the carbon bias the destruction of the second temple we don't know anything about the name of the author the meniscus we have done and says by Saint Matthew Sincerely Yours Luke with best wishes for a happy healthy New Year John doesn't go that way these are Catholic traditions that developed toward the end of the second century Irenaeus in' who was the church father early on and others such very important Antonis and church fathers would just would attach these names of these books the earlier church fathers Ignatius for example early second century just in mid second centric they would just refer to this as the sayings of the Apostles they had no name was attached to it and when Matthew is referred to in the book of Matthew the author doesn't go and Jesus came to me that never his first person we know another thing about the author of what's called the first gospel though chronologically this is very important it wasn't written first but there's a distinction between Matthew and Luke written approximately at the same time let's just put it at 80 that's very mainstream roughly ten years after the book of Mark those are the only two sources for an infancy narrative what Christians are going to be celebrating in a month from now comes only from two books in the Christian Bible the fact that Jesus was born in Bethlehem to a virgin only comes from Matthew Luke but they're different because whereas Luke will have a very elaborate infancy narrative fact Luke's infancy narratives is huge it's much larger than Matthew's in fact that's larger than many books in the Christian Bible but Matthew undoubtedly was speaking with a Jewish audience in mind his role was to convey to Jews that they need to accept Jesus their Messiah so you may have the same story both in the book of Luke and Matthew however wise Luke will simply tell you the story Matthew will go one step further this is not an arbitrary event that the Messiah was born of a virgin oh no this is a fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14 very famously Matthew 1:23 and as the story goes Joseph is engaged to Mary during this fight we are told Mary discovers that she's pregnant and Joseph discovers this he is sure that he has absolutely nothing to do with this event and his first thought is that he has to separate for me he was a nice man he wanted to do it privately but he wanted to divorce her he has a dream he is told that in fact that what is in thin the womb of Mary is of the Holy Ghost and that she was a virgin he should not leave her and to fill what it says in Isaiah when the child is born in Bethlehem Matthew needs a device to get them to Nazareth Herod the Great discovers that the King of the Jews has been born in Bethlehem Matthew two verse three four five six and he wants to essentially kill the child and he we are told murders every child born in Bethlehem the family has to flee they have to get out they have to leave because Herod is seeking to kill the child and they go to Egypt and they remain in Egypt until the death of Herod is this in arbitrary event absolutely not Matthew as a message for you this is not an accident that Jesus and the Holy Family had to go down to Egypt Egypt after all is outside of the jurisdiction of Herod the Great this is a fulfillment of Jewish prophecy and when they departed behold the angel Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying arise and take the young child as mother and flee to Egypt be there until I bring you word because Herod is seeking the young child to destroy him when he arose he took the young child mother by night and departed into Egypt and was there until the death of Herod that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the Prophet saying here is the quote out of Egypt have I called my son out of Egypt have I called my son here we have an open prophecy and this comes in the book of Hosea say Felicia to give you a sense of chronology the book of Hosea was written roughly 7 centuries before the Christian era was written roughly 2700 years ago Michele was a contemporary of Isaiah he was actually a little older but they lived at the same time how most mijo they live in same time Hosea Matthew wants you to know 700 years before this event foretold that the Messiah was going to be called down to Egypt out of each help I call my son are you willing to accept Jesus in your life today if you had a Christian Study Bible it would tell you that this passage is quoted from the book of Hosea chapter 11 verse 1 any Christian Bible in the world will tell you in the tiny little footnote a very very small footnote would tell you need like an electron microscope see but it'll be there that Matthew is quoting from the book of Hosea from safe Isaiah and I want you to know it's really there however Mathew the author of the first gospel does something very striking what does he do for some reason he only quotes the last Clause of that passage he only quotes the last comma he only calls the last part of the original text in the Book of Isaiah chapter 11 verse 1 and the question is why why would the author of Matthew feel compelled to only clothe the very last part of the of the passage from the book of Isaiah and as you will see in a moment my friends whoever wrote this book had no choice whoever wrote the book of Matthew had no choice he had to quote over the very last part of the original verse from the Book of Isaiah why because if we would Accord that verse in its entirety every reader of the book of Matthew would know immediately that this verse has nothing to do with the Messiah has to do with something else entirely different Hosea 11:1 let's read the passage but in context not the way it appears in the Christian Bible when Israel was a child then I loved him and called my son out of Egypt ladies and gentlemen is this verse is this passage from the book of Hosea really referring to the Messiah as Jews sergey's in chocen ministries and all our other good friends would have us believe no what is this verse really referring to the chosen Israel the B'nai Israel but because as our prophets of blessed memory refer to the children of Israel frequently in the singular why because we not only have a singular history but we have a singular promise and a unique destiny together frequently Chloe slowly first - in the singular as God's firstborn son exodus 422 and what will the church do with it it doesn't want you to think it's talking about Israel do the same thing in Isaiah 53 completely ripped out of context and live will view only here out of Egypt have I called my son it sounds like it's talking about the Messiah God's son Godzilla's bones lamb so all you have to do is take a passage and you surgically remove the last part jealous in the first hope no Christian looks up and generally they don't I'm not saying they never do but generally they don't and suddenly you have a brand new passage you have a brand new message how do you change the Word of God how do you alter the message convey that the prophets of memory of blessed memory and if you're going to engage in this kind of cannery do you think I'm gonna get baptized you're gonna destroy my relationship with my god and people might entity how'd he play games is those are misapplied that the text is referring to not an entrance into each of the original passage out of Egypt have I called my son is referring to unambiguously to an exodus from Egypt whenever you are engaging in a conversation with a missionary don't have to worry you don't have to be afraid the person you're speaking to almost certainly is a very sincere person and it's important to very carefully gently show them scripture very carefully when you're telling the truth you don't have to worry let me see here a passage you're not familiar with and after worrying why was he talking the truth I want to read a verse to you a caution light this passage in a Christian Bible peer as Psalm 22 verse 16 in a Jewish Bible it would appear as verse 17 is this very same passage okay I want to read Psalm 22:16 and then 17 parentheses this is the King James Version four dogs have compassed me the Assembly of the wicked have inclosed me they pierced my hands of my feet ladies and gentleman be honest who does that sound like it might be talking about this may be the first time in history of this show that a rabbi stood in front of a congregation asked the question the response was Jesus it may not I don't know but I'm just I have that sneaking suspicion okay what I'd like to do is read that exact same passage but how it appears in a typical Jewish translation and that we'll look at Psalm 22 verse 17 what dogs have compass mean a company of evildoers have enclosed me like a lion threw out my hands on my feet who is that speaking about exactly now I just wear the Zach same verse to you as it appears in a Christian Bible and then it appears in a typical Jewish Bible translation when I read it to you the first amazing what was that selling I was talking about and what is going Jesus and I read to you the second time and it was like just no answer I don't know could anyone here convey share with me what is it about the first reading that sounded a lot like Jesus what was what was it about the first reading that sounds strike pierced they pierced my hands in my fate sounds rather christological sounds exactly like a crucifixion what's going on here what the church did was the speaker is King David Psalm 22 should make you think about a whole series of chapters that are introducing the famous Psalm 23 mismo it's very beautiful right listen kid look I want you to listen close we're gonna give a chef a little kiss that chapter that's so deeply moving what is this great man of God conveying he's saying that even though I have endured tremendous pain and difficulty I walk in a place that solidarity of valley of death whether it is your staff or your rod meaning staff what holds you up or a rod which hits you I know it's it all comforts me King David suffered a lot of service a lot of pain in his life if you think you have problems David suffered from tremendous betrayal in his life imagine having a son who wanted to kill him imagine your own child is your implacable enemy who wants to kill you that is unimaginable that is not on the level of my daughter hasn't called me in six days King Dave had suffered the worst papers like betrayal over and over again the chapters that introduced Psalm 23 convey the pain and anguish that King David endure during his life nevertheless he relied on a customer who in throughout this chapter King David is using metaphors to describe his enemies that are around them at all times does anyone see the word that has been completely missed translated in order to make that passage appear christological what word is that khari and what does Clara mean like a lion ari is a lion Cori the prefix is like a lion so what you have is you have your big screen microsoft word whatever you take your trackball you selected in the words like a lion white letters on a blue background deleted they disappear you then type it instead they pierced the suddenly ever brand-new message how do you play with my Bible how do you alter the text and if you go to touch my scriptures you think I'm gonna get baptized who it engages in so she can really you know if you are sitting here tonight and you're an observant Jew and someone comes over this says you know I'm sharp seven Shabbos you start working but why do you put on tefillin every day I see you don't eat anywhere you want eat only something that's from a clean animal why I'm sure cause they're a pig I know I am pretty sure they it tastes good right I'll be sure they tell me sometimes I ask people who become religious ISM in their adult life where I've converted to the Jewish faith and I answer is they're like what is was like the most difficult thing they go lobster lobster is the biggest this was the biggest thing in the world don't use a shrimp you don't know really because the lobster to me looks like a big cockroach and they said well rabbi you don't understand what lobster is we go into the lobster place and they actually put on special pajamas till we eat it then with with a picture of what you could eat on the bib right and they stick it in butter in the shutter and there you they're like this this is a gross thing ever what cool I don't know if they have a shop right Kroger's in America I don't know if the Pathmark whatever they used to have so you soon as you passed by a tank that had lobsters in it no and they had like rubber bands on their hands right and you're going guys this is your time to run just get out like if you could just for right now understand English this is really you are invited to dinner but as it turns out just go like get out what is really good right but if I would ask you what do you do that what are you afraid from I have to but it really this them Christians will say do you feel offended by this you got to know that they feel offended by this because they're loaded for being offended because the Gospels are stories the the theology in the New Testament is found in predominantly the letters of Paul 13 letters are attributed to him seven of them are indisputably from his hand the book of Hebrews is also front loaded with theology it's unlikely that Paul would have written it but whoever wrote Hebrews Paul would have been very proud of him as it turns out this changing of the word khari first of all that word appears of many of the time Tintin F lions are all over the pace car week are a everywhere and if you've looked up any of the place that word car reappears in a Christian Bible how do they translate it like a lion only here pierced I wonder why you could look up that today you have the software online in the old days I had to use a concordance he how to use these big thick books looking up any other place this word appears like a line only he appears to how do you do this is a game and what's very striking about this this alteration this no I want to retract the word alteration this raping of our text that is the right word is it but I mean the Hindus don't do this kind of style this took place somewhere in the second century because it doesn't appear anywhere in the Christian Bible they didn't think of doing that one yet it wasn't contrived it and every question has to answer the question if it really says they pierced my hands of my feet you want me to believe that the writers of the Christian Bible their understanding of this passage in Psalm 22 as saying they pierced me in their freedom they went know I know says that the messiah's hands of Eden appear but we're not gonna coded anywhere in our writings inconceivable no sober mind could it believe such thing and when I said the Croatians are very surprised they go really I thought for sure it must be Paul Romans chapter one the crucifixion is everything Paul just didn't think that verse was important enough to mention this is a contrivance that was developed about a hundred years after the writings of the New Testaments how do you play with my Bible so here's technique number two changed the meaning of just one word and you have a brand new message we returned back to Matthews infancy narrative eventually Joseph gets wind of the fact that Herod the Great is dead but Herod the Great is not given that title because he was a big tonic he was really out of his mind he was a brilliant builder brilliant but he was really for good reason he was hated by everyone his son Herod Archelaus who replaces him in the year 4 BCE he then becomes the tetri arc of Judea another son is given Authority in the north he's crazier than his father he was really mature if he was really in God's instead that he was such a nutjob the Romans fired him because he was too crazy for them so Herod the Great dies in the year 4 BCE in Matthew's view therefore Jesus was alive before that because their contemporaries been what they told you so quaint - Matthew Jesus is born around the year let's say just 6 BCE well we found that odd that coined in Matthew Jesus was born six years before Christ but that's a different lecture entirely Luke has a differently Luke has Jesus birth with the with when Herod Archelaus is removed by the Romans for just like he basically just slaughtered everyone on the temple the Jews intimacies Massacre Uranus was the governor of Syria was that put in a to govern where we are right now and you who do that happens in 6c we know exactly when that happened and therefore Matthew and Luke have Jesus born around ten years apart Joseph is is informed that Herod the Great is dead and the threat has now no longer there and you can go back but don't go back to Judea why because as a Michigan not even greater than Herod the Great his son but rather go up to the Galilee northern Galilee to Nazareth is this an arbitrary event that the Messiah is supposed to come from Nazareth I mean after all today Jesus called Jesus of Nazareth not Jesus of Bethlem no Matthew wants you to know that there's a passage in the Jewish Scriptures that foretells that the Messiah is to be from Nazareth going to the end of Matthew 2 and he came and dwelt in the city called Nazareth that a Micah fulfilled which is spoken by the prophets here's the quote he shall be called a Nazarene he shall be called a Nazarene suddenly you studying Tanakh and I'm very proud of you we talked about last week does anyone know which where this comes from this is which you don't know it's not a big deal do you know where anybody know which say friend tonight you don't little Ernie hey Mon a little bit nobody which one Simpson not since um is the Nazarite but how do you say Nazareth in Hebrew not setteth right so it's in when you anglicize of them they sound strikingly similar but in Hebrew later very different what's the first thing yes but you're actually close to the way anybody else has though you don't know it's not a big deal which book isn't enough and who said you say oh you said you shall know this my friends is technique number three there is no such verse there's nothing wrong with you this verse doesn't exist technique number three is if you don't have a very simply invent one in fact the city of Nazareth is never mentioned in time the city of Nazareth has never mentioned the talmud anywhere development or Josephus it's really a backwater town it exists it did exist we aren't we've done the archaeology and not me personally but I had friends who helped me give you rocky algae was that we found that it really was we say a one-horse town it really was well some Christian will say yes it's you know the Messiah's hold the branch and that's a net sir and that's what it is there technique number three if you don't have a verse you simply invent one how do you change the Word of God I remember speaking in fairfax virginia i was speaking to young folks a lot of people work for the federal government in washington but then they don't want to live there met a fellow there who's employed by the federal government he works for the Secret Service the United States a Jewish guy belongs to a conservative congregation on Fairfax he doesn't protect the President or his family and that's what you often think of we think of a Secret Service his job is to protect the currency of the United States which is essentially word standard no matter who you are when Saddam Hussein was on the run he didn't bring Indonesian Rupiah with him it was dollar see the dollar is the end is the world standard and therefore the job of the Secret Service that mandate to protect the American currency is very very serious he trains new recruits some of the brightest young men and women how to easily detect the counterfeit bill I said to me no you must have there wherever it is secretive but you must have a big collection of counterfeit currency that have been confiscated over the years and the way you train your Ayden's is you show them all the different counterfeit currency and show them how it and then they're able that he said to me rabbi that's not how we do it here the way we train our agents how to detect counterfeit currency is we show them and have them touch real money American currency I didn't know this is printed on a paper or printed on a material there is no other paper like it in the world in the United States government makes sure of that there are complex fine line engravings that bill I didn't know was there there are fibers blue in the paper schmutz in the paper there's a there are shifting watermarks you hold to a different angle and the colors change the agents learn what real money feels like what it looks like wine because you take an agent with that kind of training and you dare put a counterfeit in their hands they'll know it immediately my holy brothers and sisters what am I saying to you what's the message am I suggesting to that immediately in order to protect your children and those that you love against missionaries who is seeking to Gura them maybe we should all start training they should know the New Testament by heart they should know old already all the letters of Paul Baba you're wasting your
