What if a person needs water to drink down
the pill, or in general, a person who has to
take medication on a fast day needs a little
bit of water? So on a regular fast day like
Shiva Asar b'Tammuz or Asarah B'Tevet, poskim
say if a person needs to take water less than
a melo logmav, less than a cheekful, which is
about 1 oz or less than an ounce of water with
the pill. So then that's acceptable. Again,
provided the person really needs the pill,
they're not feeling so well, they have a headache.
On Tisha B'Av, so then poskim say we need a higher
level of need before one takes water with their
pill. So if a person has a migraine headache,
for instance, they really can't function,
they have to lay down, they have the status
of a choleh, then they could take again the
melo logma, that little bit of water, together
with the pill to help it go down. Of course, it's
always worthwhile to speak to a rabbi, especially
a person who's not sure what level of discomfort
they're up to. It's best to check in with a rabbi.
