Parashat Matot, Secrets of Prayer, Vows, War, Converts, Financial Success

this is and he's uh unfortunately one of the people that was murdered three years ago in Bulgaria in a terror attack family and this we do as a result of it will raise his soul even higher one of the things we know about souls is that you know you ask yourself why is it that Tora says that the books of Life are opened every year it's coming up soon but it's talking about the people that are here and the people that are not here so when you ask yourself what is the guy that already left this world need us to help his soul especially if it's a sadik a lot of people go to the graves of the sadikin and they pray over there and they uh they ask for help does the sadik really need you he's sadik he's already in GED right so first of all it's very important to know that there's a very very specific way that you have to if you're going to go to a uh grave of a sadik there's a very specific way you have to do it meaning that you have to remember that you're not praying to the sadik because that's idol worship that's what Christianity is that's what Catholicism is that's what every other religion in the world is it's it's a form of idol worship you're not allowed to pray to a person ever what about everybody going to Babas they can go to whoever they want they can go to whoever they want they go to babali they go to they can go to they go to all the places but they have to mention that they're praying to his God when you say supposed to say the god of help me not help can't do anything for you know so you have to make sure that you're praying to God and not to so that's number one it's very very important people do that the right way because what happened over time is that people especially people that don't know really that much about uh religion don't really know that much about uh Judaism is that they don't keep as many of the mitv but they like the they like the cultural stuff so anytime something bad happens say Shimon or one of the major sages one of these amazing people that lived in the past they're asking him for help in reality they're supposed to pray to God so it's very very important to do it the right way no yes why am I mentioning his name the reason why I'm mentioning his name is because in essence what you're asking for is a uh defense attorney you're asking that bimon or any one of the major sages or even Moses is uh going to because of all the extra that he has and all the extra that he has in sh you're going to do something to honor him and in return you are hoping that he's going to help you fight your case so now if you just say listen something bad happens I lost some money I'm going to pray to or I'm going to pray to Moses or Abraham or Isaac or Jacob or anybody and just because you're you and because you have a nice face and you like to drive fast cars then you're wasting your prayer and if anything uh you are actually dishonoring their name if you're going to ask any sage in history for help you have to do something if to do something in return so for example anyone that's going to ask let's say may or anyone anyone you have to learn their work you're going to learn the Z you're going to learn certain if if you're going to learn the Tora itself you're going to learn different that they gave you're going to do certain prayers that they advise to do do something in their name so if you if if someone says listen I need someone to help me so I'm going to learn their Torah their one of their books that they wrote I'm going to try to learn it so so in because when I learn their book in essence I'm giving them aot so their situation improves even more in sham so if their situation improves sh maybe that will convince them to see that I'm worthwhile to help but to just say listen uh you know uh rabi so and so help me it's not it's not uh it's not going to yield very much uh at least not in a logical way uh the second thing is now when you talk about these sadim why is it that people even why why would we even ask for their help like they don't need our they don't need us to raise their soul if you think about it they already so what do they need us to raise their soul because what we're thinking about when we think about heaven or hell even is that it's limited meaning that the joy in heaven is limited and the suffering in hell is limited the reason why we have this limited mindset is because the world that we live in is limited there's only a limit of how you know a bigger person can be there's a limit of how much somebody can eat there's a limit of how much someone can breathe there's a limit of how someone you know operates there's a limit to everything because this is the physical world in the spiritual World there is no limit it could always be more which means that even someone as righteous ASU Oru or or the b or any of them La deal from all of them but the point is even their situation could always be even better because the reward that Hashem can give them is endless and that's the that's the very very big difference between their world and our world so that's why if we honor their name uh which for example one of the reasons why we do uh we celebrate the holiday of L is in the honor of Rish shim he's the one to put together the Z so when uh you celebrate it and you're in essence you're supposed to be celebrating his Torah not just make a bonfire uh because you like to make potatoes uh so uh when you're celebrating these holidays again you're supposed to be you know you're raising their soul but in essence that's that's the deal that's supposed to happen you're supposed to uh uh know that so but most importantly out of everything that I just said is that it's only God the only God in the world the only God that ever was the only God that ever will be that can help you that's it it say no you're not praying to the sadik you're praying to God and that's one of the mistakes that some fortunately some people make especially even some big congregations that pray to a former Rabbi that died uh you know 30 years ago 50 years ago 100 years ago uh there's very big congregations that unfortunately got so connected to praying to the sadik that they've turned the sadik into an idol which is no different than Christianity that pray to JC so the uh that's a very really big problem because idol worship is one of the first three Commandments in the Ten Commandments and the punishment is very very severe it's mentioned all the way throughout the entire Tor and every time that uh uh the violation of Shabbat is mentioned it's mentioned right next to idol worship because they're considered in essence the same someone that does idol worship is praying to a different God uh is violating one of the first three Commandments and Hashem says that whoever doesn't keep Shabbat is in essence doing the same exact thing because by honoring the Shabbat you're saying that Hashem created the world in six days and on the seventh day he stopped creating uh so someone is not honoring the Shabbat the fact that Hashem restrained himself Hashem didn't need six days to create the World hasem hasem created the world in an instant really he created everything in an instant he put everything together over 6 days for our benefit not for his you didn't need to hire construction companies and get licenses from the government and uh maybe uh get some uh you know some people from different countries to work because it's cheaper labor you didn't need to do any of that you know he he obviously did everything in a second but he he he minimized himself in essence to take time to create everything over six days in order to give us a week you know in order to give us seven days because after creating everything for six days then we can do then he stops on the seventh which if we stop then we can in essence emulate God so he wants to give us the same La deal but the same feeling as he has being a God so if he's saying so someone that doesn't keep Shabbat is pretty much saying listen God you minimize yourself for me but I don't really care I'm not going to minimize myself for you I'm not going to stop my work I'm going to work because I need to make money because I make the money not you don't give it to me because the weekend are more money on the weekends right so that's that's that's that's the main that's the main uh problem with uh the violation of Shabbat and again it's a it's very important to know these things because again when people think about idol worship it doesn't matter what religion you are unless you're worshipping an idol directly like in Buddhism and things like that you automatically know it's bad whether it's Muslim Christian Catholic or 880,000 other Cults that there are in in in the world everyone knows idol worship is not good since you told me about those Buddhas and all and I see them at the job sites oh yeah so I don't even touch it I tell the guy hey you want to you wrap this I'm not wrapping that up yeah listen if you're going to a work site yeah it's a uh it's it's if if you're going to a friend's house and if you have a friend that has a statue in his house you're not allowed to go into that house just so you know um and unfortunately Buddha statues are everywhere they're very very popular for some strange reason they're very popular among Israeli houses a lot of Israelis like Buddha yeah Israelis love Buddha uh yeah they travel to India they travel to that part of the world and they like to have these things in their house and without even knowing that it's actually uh a very big big sin so it's good to know these things because again sometimes we can make a sin very uh innocently uh just out of ignorance and that's why I say that ignorance is the biggest poison that someone can inject into themselves because without knowing you don't even know what you don't know let me ask you a question yeah when it comes to yeah all the sages depends you're talking about in this generation I get okay let's say 40 years ago no okay people put pictures in their house of them it's in is that in the form of idol worship no it's not a form of idol worship if you know what you're doing you're honoring him in a sense that he's a sage you're trying to emulate his behavior uh you're wishing you know you're trying to do what he did in his life and achieve the extraordinary amount of mitv that he did in his life you want to have the same midot you want to have the same behavior he did the same same things that he so you if you're praying to him that's a problem so now now now the next question should be okay so what if what happens if one day I can't go to besset and I want to pray that's a question yeah right so I want to pray but uh now if I pray there's a the first three prayers of of the first three prayers you're supposed to Bow right supposed to Bow the first three it used to be they used to Bow all of them uh but now we only bow the first three so now if you have a picture on the wall of anyone doesn't necessarily need to be a sadik could be even uh your father uh you have to bow in a different direction you cannot bow towards that direction because it would look like if somebody's walking into the room you know that you're not bowing to him right but if you always have to worry about which is actually one of the things we learn in this par you always have to make sure that if someone sees you it doesn't look like a bad thing because that causes so if somebody walks into your house a friend that walks into your house and he says wait a minute he's bowing to I don't know laich or babaali or somebody else it looks like idol worship so that that could create a which is a very very bad sin that uh uh without suffering cannot be fixed in this world so um also you know again it's a it's important to honor the sages learn their work take their advice 100% but when people take that and they say listen learning the I'm not at that level learning the it's too difficult learning the I don't have time learning a simple book about or mid I didn't get a chance to yet but I could just say his name and uh do uh you know and just do that and pretty much just pray to him they're in essence taking the the important and going to the and think which is unimportant and they're turning Judaism which is holy and beautiful into outright idol worship and that happens very often with people that are not religious because again when you're not religious you're not surrounded by religious people so no one is going to be there to correct you the fact that there are some religious people Many religious people that do it themselves is a different story but the point is the point of the matter is that every Jew knows that idol worship is not allowed the people that do it never think it's idol worship uh but I can guarantee you that this is not my opinion this is 100 opinion of the tah and major rabbis that have have told me this um it's you have to be very very careful when you are praying uh and mentioning a rabbi's name even if it's mosu very very careful you have to make sure that you are asking for AEM uh because of his because of his help me so that's in essence what you're trying to do uh and uh that could help you it works it's not it's not something I'm not saying it doesn't work it 100% Works to honor theim is is a big Mitzvah of itself um but it has to be done appropriately and unfortunately in our generation there's so much buut which is like ignorance in our generation that people don't know what they don't know which means that there's an extraordinary amount of idol worship that's innocent it's not that they're doing it intentionally not saying listen I want to turn this guy with a beard into an idol no one says that it's people do it innocently people do it as a mistake unfortunately it's still it's still a sin it's shog it's an unintentional sin but it's still a sin so if we could avoid that sin just by learning the first 15 minutes of our or that's it we're done we could avoid it so any other any other questions about the issue we can move on into okay so we have two this week uh a lot of really interesting things to be honest with you I'm hoping that we could uh cover all of it or at least as much of it as possible I mean to cover all of it would take probably years but at least the stuff that I wanted to highlight um starts with the lessons about vows and Oaths and a lot of people today speak again innocently it's very rarely will you find someone doing an intentional sin yes there are unfortunately some haters of Hashem in the world uh I actually got to uh uh um experience one just uh yesterday or the day before um but uh it's a very very small percentage of people very very small percentage of people the haters of hasem they're very noticeable why because they make their opinion is very public and they try to do everything they can to uh make everyone know that they hate the whole aspect of Judaism and God and religion in general now we we're excluding them from the opinion with the other 99.9% of people generally don't do sins intentionally people do things either because they don't know or they don't believe someone that's not keeping Shabbat which is the number one most important mitvah as far as to be Jewish even is not not keeping it because uh you know he he doesn't uh he doesn't think it's a good thing it's either he doesn't know that he has to or he doesn't know it's import or he just doesn't believe he doesn't believe that it's real he doesn't believe that Tor is real he doesn't believe that it's really relevant in today so that's and that goes for every Mitzvah that goes for every a every every every sin or or Good Deed that people do is based on uh whether they believe or not so the issues of N and Oaths vows and Oaths is a problem because people speak freely people constantly promise each other different things especially in business and when someone says yeah listen if you uh you know people say oh you know listen yeah you refer me some clients I'll definitely pay you yeah after say B you're a smart guy you learned some most people don't say B so say listen you're going to refer me a client uh every client you give me I'm going to give you $55,000 or uh someone says listen if you uh if you do this and this for me I'll you know return a favor even bigger I'll do something else for you and you don't really mean it now when someone thinks of a they're thinking that I have to say meaning I make a vow that I will do such and such that's what I thought most of my life I thought that in order for me to say a in order for me to make a you know a swear in so many words I have to actually make it like it's a formal statement of some kind or procedure like maybe I have to go even to a rabbi and tell him listen I make this n but it's not a simple statement can be a n something as simple as I promise you that I will do can get you into a lot of trouble so it's very important that you know we we think about our words it's actually also part of the reason why in the Holy books it says that each person is brought to this world with a limited amount of words meaning that there's a limited amount of words that each person has for his lifetime now that does not include Torah words like if someone is learning Torah they could they could talk unlimited amount of Torah but if it's not relevant to T there's actually a limited amount of words so someone that just likes to talk about nonsense uh and day-to-day stuff but excessively is actually wasting their life and usually they die very young Yas uh yentas I guess it's another way you could say it um not necessarily all the time it's again there's a rule there's an exception to the rule but there's a uh in General we're all limited as far as the amount of words that we have um so when we make promises we have to make sure that we mean them and if we don't mean them or if we uh don't we're not sure we're going to do it we always have to make sure we say B like you know I'm not making a vow and I try my best but I'm not going to make a vow the other thing is is that sometimes people get into trouble they get sick or uh they have financial trouble or is a very big fight or they lost something very important to them uh or something like something happens they're they're in trouble and usually when someone is in trouble what happens what happens they look at thisy ah they look up they look at Hashem Hashem help me and I can't help myself the money is not going to help me the girl's not going to help me the car is not going to help me the house is not going to help me the hundred million doll in the bank is not going to help me why because there certain things in life most things that are really important in life money can't help you and all of the other material things in the world can't help you so someone's in trouble someone you can't buy Health you can buy convenience but you can't buy Health best example of it a recent example of it is look at Steve Jobs Steve Jobs was a multi-billionaire very very successful very very bright guy died very young all the billions did nothing for him so again we don't wish anyone death this is just for the purpose of showing an example now when someone gets into trouble and they get usually it's when they get very sick or they're in a very serious situation they promis that they will do something Hashem if you help me do if you help me get through this I will do I will keep shabat I will do I will give I will donate to such and such cause they promised to do a mitvah and then hashm helps them and they don't want to do it anymore all of a sudden they became too busy all of a sudden money is a little tighter than they thought all of a sudden Shabbat is just not doesn't fit their life right now maybe once I get married maybe once I get rich maybe once this happens or that happens is kicking is working 100% is is someone we need to learn from what do we need to learn from the according to we have to learn his work ethic he never stops we have to be just like him either him or the ant the ant also never stops working so now when uh when someone makes a vow that they're going to give they don't have to say I need no D they don't have to actually make it a form even if someone says I'm going to do gifts let's say and they don't do it that's not good not only not good they're uh they're putting they're putting people's lives at risks now what is the punishment for breaking a someone a man breaks a his wife and his children are supposed to die so either his wife or his children are supposed to die so sometimes you see in the world you know why did this 5-year-old Kid die or why did this little girl this little boy or this wife young wife why do these people die this could very well be one of the many reasons of why people die uh because people speak freely about things and make promises that they don't want to keep or don't have an intention of keeping and uh that's one of the things that makes Hashem very very angry so this is specifically one of the things that tells us that uh making a vow is not just one of these things you can't just make empty promises not with AEM so when a man makes a promise when a man makes a vow and doesn't keep it he's putting B he's putting people's lives at risk serious people's lives at risk especially when it's at the time of trouble if someone is just saying listen I promise you that I'm going to show up on time next week okay that's one level of Promise it's very very different logically and based on kazal than someone saying listen God if you give me Health then I will do every day or something like that it's very very different level of n because here AEM saved your life showing up in time it's the best effort let's say so it's a very very different n uh so the one that when someone is in trouble and Hashem doesn't uh you know deliver Hashem delivers but he doesn't that's a very dangerous position to be in so now when a woman makes a n when she's a child and she's not married then she makes a Ned if her father found out that same day that she made or the the minute that he found out that she made a Ned if he doesn't think it's a good one meaning if he doesn't think that she can do it or if it doesn't doesn't think it's a good good thing for her to do he can cancel her n he can cancel her vow once she gets married her that responsibility transfers to the husband but it has to be at the time they find out it cannot be uh you know a uh he found out said nothing about it and then the next day decided that uh you know it's not a good idea it has to be within that same uh same day so that's that's another one of the things that kazal explains to us in the beginning this where it says says Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes meaning he's teaching all of the people all the leaders of Israel of the children of Israel saying this is the thing that Hashem has commanded if a man will take a vow to Hashem or swear an oath to establish a Prohibition upon himself he shall not desecrate his word according to whatever comes from his mouth shall he do so when it says shall he do when he says that he obviously has to do it meaning means that there is a consequence for it which it uh goes into in the next several verses now one very very interesting thing that I think is is actually I I found very interesting in this first paragraph on verse uh six is that uh it says here so it says but if a father meaning if a girl that's unmarried uh made a but if a father restrained her meaning that if the father said no no we're going to cancel this n all of her vows and our prohibitions that she established on ourselves shall not stand meaning there canceled but then it says something very interesting and Hashem will forgive her for her father has restrained her very rarely do you see and Hashem will forgive specific sins like there's a certain thing that's happens and then asem will forgive even though someone technically made a sin hem will forgive him the whole concept of chuva was created before the world and it's discussed in the Tora and in the and so on but a specific verse that says meaning and hem will forgive her or him is very rare so he's giving you the Mitzvah which also means you know counter to it he's giving you the a if you don't do it he's giving you the way to fix it and he's telling you if you fix it I'll forgive you that's not done with Shabbat that's not done with that's not done with wasting seed that's not done with major sins that we discuss nearly every week where someone will do this Hashem will forgive him it's not written there so it's very very interesting it's not that it's interesting that it's written here because of the N it's interesting because it's not written anywhere else and that's the important part meaning that in order to fix the other sins it's not as easy as the it's not as easy meaning not easy as meaning it's not as easy as having my dad or the girl's father fix it or the girl's uh husband fix it it's not as easy as that in order to really have the other ones fixed someone has to do a full chuva it's not a one two three thing so there's one time I'm sure you guys have all heard of aaka one of the most important Jews in history one of the reasons why he's one of the most important Jews aside from the fact that uh he uh started from nothing he started at guy to go learn for 12 years and you're alone on top of it at least if he's good-looking and he's with you I don't know maybe the desire is so big he's with you but you don't even have the husband he's learning so what do ra say if he could hear me now I would tell him to go for another 12 years soik what does he do he honors his wife he turns around and he goes back to the Yesa for another 12 years doesn't even say hello someone asked listen okay I understand nice okay went studied 24 years great but but I don't understand why didn't he at least say hi stay for a weekend you haven't seen one of them to the worst one and that's by by the way one of the reason why we mourn their death we don't mourn that they died we mourn the fact that we don't have any more Tor from them because all of the Torah that we have is actually not from them it's from the five students that started Judaism again one of them actually being uh so we mourn the fact that since if you see the amount of tah we have in the world just from five people imagine what we would have in the world if all 24,000 didn't die the way they did so why did I tell you the story abouta is because when AA came in with his 24,000 students the whole town knew this giant sadik is coming 24,000 students is not a normal thing so ra knows it's our husband she has this feeling it's our husband coming in he's the sadik so she years yeah so he goes one of the rich people he uh he gets in front of RAB AA some I think say that it was at that very time that his daughter was there some no but either way the point is that he gets in front of R AA and he says Rabbi please help me Rabbi Raba knows who he is but he doesn't say who he is because how can I help you I made a very big mistake 24 years ago I made a vow to cut off my daughter because she married this fool and uh I miss her I want to see her and he says this fool does uh you know T he go no no he knew nothing complete ignorant he used to clean my horses mhm goes well what would happen if this fool became a big Rabbi would you still Cut Her Off become a rabbi no I wouldn't Cut Her Off even if he knew a little bit of tah if he knew if he just knew the AL didn't from among yourselves for Alle Legion that they uh they may go against Midian to inflict hashem's Vengeance against Midian so instead of saying like hasem say Hashem says take a Vengeance for your own will never stop human nature will always want more one of the things that uh it's someone needs to work on in their life is to not like money very hard to do but uh it's a uh it's one one of the you think is a lot of money because you will make approximately 60% of what you think is a lot if you think $100,000 a year is a lot your maximum potential is $60,000 you will never make above $60,000 from your own ability obviously Hashem decides but as far as human nature and how that works you will not make as much as you think is a lot if you think a million dollars a year is a lot your maximum
