People want to know if there's a kashrus concern
with eating outdoors, having a picnic, a barbecue,
in an area that has lots of bugs. Now, obviously,
this is a concern. That doesn't mean that you
can't have outdoor barbecues or picnics. But, of
course, if a person is going to be outdoors where
there are lots of bugs around, they have to be
much more vigilant. They shouldn't leave things
open. Let's say you have a container of ketchup
or something, you should leave it covered, except
when you need to take some, obviously. What if you
do see a bug go into the ketchup? If it's still on
the surface and you could scoop it away, then it's
still fine. The rest of the ketchup could be used.
If it got into the ketchup and you can't find it,
then the whole bowl of ketchup now is forbidden.
We don't say it's just a tiny amount and you know
it's batul, it's nullified or anything like that
because a whole bug is never nullified. If that
were to happen, if someone sees a bug fall into
their, whatever the liquid is, you would then
have to throw out the entire bowl of ketchup.
So things like that, you should be very careful
that it should always remain covered. You should
always look at your food, make sure that it's
clean, and in general, a person should always be,
even in their own home, the should be mindful,
and even more so if they're eating outdoors.
