So, there's two reasons given. One is because of
the Gematria. We know that in Rosh Hashanah we're
very big into symbolism. Rosh Hashanah we have
different fruit that have different symbolism
to them. The gematria, the numerical value of
the word "egoz," refers to a certain type of a
nut, is the same as the gematria of "cheit," of
sin, and we don't want to have any association
with sins, with cheit on Rosh Hashanah, and
therefore we avoid eating egoz. What about
other nuts? There are shkedim, there all types
of nuts out there that have different names to
them. The Poskim say, the Magen Avraham says,
that we avoid eating all nuts on Rosh Hashanah;
nuts tend to cause a person to have lots of
phlegm. They'll have to clear their throat.
They might miss out on hearing the shofar,
hearing the tekiyat shofar. All nuts are
avoided for this reason. Some will avoid it
during the entire Aseret Yemei Teshuvah, even
though we're not listening to the shofar anymore
because of the Gematria. The whole 10 days we're
trying to start the year without any cheit or any
illusion of cheit, and therefore people will avoid
eating nuts through Yom Kippur, even some through
Sukkot, to start off the year without any cheit.
