Everybody knows about waiting after
meat before eating milk. A lot of
people don't realize that there are
halachos about eating meat after milk.
A person can't just have some milk and then have a
hamburger a minute later. Before a person has meat
after having milk, a person has to thoroughly wash
their hands and cleanse their mouth as well as
either brushing their teeth thoroughly or eating
a pareve food that's going to clean the mouth out.
And some say you have to wait a certain minimal
amount of time. But in terms of the cheese,
the hard cheese, that's where the curiosity is.
We have to really go back to why a person has to
wait after meat before having milk. The Rashi in
Chulin says there's meshichas ta'am. There's a
fatty aftertaste that's going to linger there
for a while and therefore before a person
has milk he has to wait for this enduring
taste to dissipate. The other reason is the
reason the Ramban brings, basar ben hashinayim,
there's meat in the mouth that doesn't dislodge
easily. It takes time to dislodge. These same
two reasons actually pertain to having certain
types of cheese prior to meat. Certain types
of cheese have a meshichas ta'am. Limburger
has a very very pungent taste to let stay in the
mouth for a while. A person can't have Limburger,
a kosher version, of course, and then have
beef afterwards. And so too, certain cheeses,
this is much more common, they're very brittle
cheeses, similar to meat, they're not going
to leave the mouth right away. These types of
cheeses, a person has to wait before having meat.
