There's a question that we get every so
often. How do I know if I need to make a
braha on this thing? It's a great
question. There's two considerations on
a food when you would potentially make a
braha on it. One is if it provides
taste. The other is it provides
nutrition. Some people refer to that as
providing calories. For example, if a
person is thirsty, we're going to look
at that as providing taste. Even though
water doesn't provide calories.
Therefore, when you're thirsty, you
would make a brhan water. But if you're
just trying to swallow a pill, you would
not make a brhan water. That would be
something where you're drinking only for
taste. Let's say a person doesn't like
the taste of broccoli, but the doctor
says it's good for him and he's going to
eat it for that reason. Even though it
doesn't provide a taste he particularly
enjoys, but because it's providing
nutrients, calories, and beneficial
vitamins to the body, he would make a
braha on that. So those are going to be
the two things that you want to consider
when we know if we need to make a brah
or not, whether it provides taste or
whether it provides nutrition.
