discussed there's washing and there's the classic checking leaf by leaf on a light box now just like we mentioned earlier there is no real gift of a cowboy area on every single leaf which really on the fifth to me to make sure that there are no bet there are no insects here so there's uh there's another method of checking that's done in oh you establishments as well as many other localities where what's called the schemata Vedika now essentially we're gonna walk through the process today but essentially what that is this is a different method it's more effective and more efficient as we'll see where we could actually time checking one leaf by leaf versus doing a shamatha and it's incredible to see how much time it actually saves okay so now we're gonna get we're gonna get going over here let me see okay good so what we have here is a romaine lettuce now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna walk through that are typical for consumer for romaine romaine since it's being one of the most popular of consumer items this is one of the reason why we're just gonna go through that so obviously first step is to soak the pro rabbi rabbi Elif if you could zoom in if you can highlight my phone for a moment I'd appreciate it Robbi Elif okay whatever so basically what you want to do is you want to smoke um you want to put the water in a soap like this and you notice how loose it is I've been in many places where you'll have people literally with this amount of water have an overflow of romaine and as long as one tip of water touches it ah okay I did my washing bit good no no no it has to be loose in the water and it has to be soapy now what you do is when you let it soak agitate it move it around and let it get nice and soapy after that's done you let it sit for a couple minutes the next step would be when you're gonna take the leaf of romaine lettuce what you want to do is obviously look at all the soap on right so we want to do is hold the leaf upside down because these ridges will notice the float if you hold it upright the water is just going to go over it whereas if you hold it upside down the water is gonna flow much better through there and it makes it much more effective washing now over here we have a little curve ball these notice over here the folds of the romaine lettuce see that so when you're rinsing it over you want to open up those folds and again just put some water through there great your washing is now complete now I'm just going to explain the method of checking over here it's then what you will do then is after you've done this you're gonna put it let's say in a basin like so of plain water second point water like this you see just plain water I'm gonna agitate it now what I want to do is once I a jeté tit I want to take their leaves out of the water this is important because as we'll see in a moment when I pour the water I don't want to have it blocked by by a whole thing of uh of leaves okay so see how I'm taking it out carefully now once I've done that we're going to now go ahead and do our that is is over here yeah what's called a nylon rip mesh now essentially what it's going to it's going to filter the water so instead of checking the water which some places do like this you know there are many levels and gradients within this body of water and essentially what I can do is I can just kind of compress that on to one simple layer to check so I'm checking the water is essential is it is it is a effective measure to help me determine is my washing procedure done because invariably when you're rinsing things off box come off now what we're going to do is notice how there are two strainers here the reason why there are two strainers is because any large leaf matter will get caught in the top strainer and okay wherever Elif said he's gonna try to get back on hold on a second but anyways the two the second strainer is going to block any heavy leaf material from blocking my view of the mapa as we like to call it the industry as a schemata bedico and what we're gonna do here is very simple we're just gonna pour the water over here and we're gonna check bugs now rub a when ready Elif comes black they could be translucent you are what you eat in this world so if you if in2 shots it up it's you know aside from being incredibly large it's also a lot much larger than a one millimeter this bug according to everybody is going to be a problem now when it gets more interesting is even its babies which the price can discuss that you know you have little tiny bugs that are green in the same color as the leaf that poshness is referring to if it's now at the end I may or may not depending on time and if people are eating lunch right now um this isn't pregnant and a baby and a fydd can reproduce up to every 20 minutes a new baby and if we pop this guy you're gonna see a whole assembly line of bugs ready to go but that's that's that's an a thing now just to compare and contrast we're gonna move on to the next Schmoe these are also very very common and this is where majority of these this is called a threat now majority of these bugs are a problem but we're gonna show the different life stages and there are a few Nakatomi notice with regard to their size before I forget let me get that I want to get that that piece of $1 here we are okay so we have our Series 2013 right there size and color now conversely I want to show you what a baby looks like now there are many stages of babies for example we have a large baby this is in star stage 2 and I'm going to once I'm once I that and I'm going to show you a baby baby okay now look at that so there are a number that the lifecycle of a trip is important to know because there's the larvae stage the crawler stage in start stage one in starts to age - until you reach reach the adulthood now the adult trip as opposed to the babies notice how the abdomen is striped as well as it has wings now interesting Shila is well we know that shruts in that fly have an extra life now a threat does not actually use it to wings to fly what it does it just uses its wings as a parachute if it wants to go somewhere else it'll jump and blood bug would be now we see kind of like a buffer right next to it but that is pretty close to a one millimeter not quite but it's still problem all as or moisture rights or promotions quoted by this little itty-bitty guy is a baby baby trip now he looks about 0.3 to 0.4 millimeters that is very very small even with Rett magnification it is difficult to detect to a normal eye now I want to show something something we're gonna go back to here now we're going to discuss size this obviously is a $10 bill and we can all clearly read that series 2013 but I wonder if anybody ever noticed next to it and there's a every dollar it has it's interesting trick like this next to it there is some writing along that line can anybody read what that says on a $10 bill it's very hard to determine that Oh what it says and even it's very difficult for me and I'm considered a real big expert you know the United States of America $10 that just repeats itself over and over again so that is approximately zero point two millimeters in size which at the very least od policies many men as well as many play skin well are not nearly nine not visible to the naked eye easily unless the caveat obviously being guys for checking will tell you which bugs you have to be concerned about trips or aphids or whatnot now we're going to get into a very controversial blog in Halawa called spider mine now the spider light reason why it's controversial is because of its size many many spider mites are not nearly enough just primarily due to its size where did I put that all right whatever so whereas whereas let's say you could have some species now there are thousands of species are very stuff every type of insect so there are thousands of species of spider mites um some of them not all of them are actually quite large and problematic but majority of the time when we're discussing produce and spider mites majority of the time they are very very small so here I have a shamatha of mint and over here we are going to have hundreds upon hundreds of spider mites now I just gave you just like we saw you see that that that guy in the middle is a threat you see those little dots that surround it those are spider mites now just for fun what we're gonna do is we're going to compare it on our $10 bill to actually measure its size and very likely it's not going to be noticeable evil you you can't even see it it's smaller than those letters so here we have a bug which is not uh sir alcohol level this is called the spider mite now again like I said earlier when it comes to determining when it comes to determine the PIA for me at the monthly this is actually stated in the u s-- document c76 on how you determine the level of vietnam leslie even though you could find sometimes you know something world on a daily basis and the fact that you have that ability um we you know makes things much more difficult and obviously more common in terms of the infestation throughout the world kind of reaching a similar a similar thing now I just here we have another very very very scary bunk the reason why it's scary is because when it rains it pours not like a threat or an aphid where you could find one or two or three okay fine that's it that's not really live a life when it comes to sharks at all the exception to that is called the white fly now in general it's not a common find but in many establishments if typically white flies are found you know unless the bottle of boss is going to want to spend all day long on one or two heads of kale or something along those lines you know it's obviously a very good business decision to just not deal with it especially when you're dealing with your kitchen it's always kadai plus if you need one bundle of cilantro to always buy two because you don't want to become emotionally and physically invested and one bundle that could be infested where it's just an extra 90 cents to have an extra bundle in case it's always a good you know practical decision I'm not luckily practically okay so here is an example of what a real interests Asian looks like these are white flies now we're gonna discuss eggs as well as different larvae stages and it comes very interesting discussion but first off you see all this schmutz over here see all that schmutz all that she was not the leaf matter this is leaf matter talk about what looks like dirt that is not dirt what that is our eggs all those are eggs from white flies um one white flight female lays between two to four hundred eggs in a shop and they're very sticky and it's just an incredible thing now when it comes to the eggs eggs are when it first off these are not nearly nine just FYI because their size in addition their eggs they're not shruts them so there's a very interesting discussion regarding the short sandwiches of eggs which think for now is beyond the scope of this discussion what I want to point out is let's see if I can find whirring what is the stages of in a second here the stages of this so what I have here this is a white fly larvae that little circle guy over there now he just got gets bigger what happens is once the egg hatches what happened it becomes a little crawler it goes somewhere you know a little a little bit farther from where it hatched and then there he is right there you see I see him what happens is they then dig themselves into the leaf and then they flatten and they become almost like an insect skill now in terms of their size they are actually surprisingly big we're going to put a next the series 2013 I push them a little you is it he's quite significant in size he's about they'd say like 0.6 to 0.7 millimeters now things with this guy is he's so embedded and stuck in the leaf it's very hard to remove them and I guarantee you that when you find presence of white flies like this you're going to find more that are actually embedded in the leaf so that is essentially an idea of a topic where you can have bugs which are us are locally owned oma to bugs which become a very interesting life like us or gray area because at what point you draw the line this is a problem this isn't some pie scan would determine maybe its esophagus or whatnot especially if you want to get a Schuyler like that which produce are you talking about what type of bugs are typically involved in if you've got a call Arab Shabbos from a woman saying oh she checked her vegetables but she mixed in with other vegetables she didn't check so what should she do and it's right before Shabbos well one of the questions that um Robottom have one of the three heads that I had and put it in water if you want to see what infestation looks like you know before in the washing we get to kind of take a look right now let's just put this over here now this is just from one head of romaine lettuce and we're gonna have what let's go hunting see if you find any goodies so I already have here could you all highlight my phone rubella or for those that could highlight it so we already have it's hard for me to seal without you know so we already have one right there an adult trip like we mentioned earlier because you can see by the abdomen as well as the as well as the as well so that's one we have another one right over here we got two we have three four I mean this happened to be a good batch the reason why I know is a good batch is
