Let today's morning learning is
dedicated for a full schlemiel of
Mira Virac.
Oh, I'm sorry this for Leon Yaco Nissan
Ben Aura.
So
for
a full schlemiel Mira
for Leon Yaco Nissan Ben Aura. Please
God we should have all of the sick of
Israel now with a giver a full
schlemiel.
Um
I'm going to go back to this as I told
you I would the the curses and the
blessing.
And I want to tell you
um
it was a real spectacle.
I had been I had been actually trying to
figure out a good network
English name for what this
public
spectacle was but unfortunately
12 years in Israel I forgot English.
Also my age but anyway
I know this great
word for it if you come up with it you
know just
whisper it to me so I can use it. But
here it is.
All of Israel is gathered
around
the two mountains
um Har Grizim and Har Eval.
And um
if you look at the source and I think I
have it right. Um
which we had already done you'll see the
first source that we have.
In the English just to review for those
who were there and for those who weren't
it's not a review but it's something to
know.
Can somebody please
I ran out of the sources what can we
give somebody
share sources so we can get people for
here. Thank you very much. Good thank
you so much.
Um
That's the whole point only after I say
it.
Um
there you see in the English where it
says at that time Yeshua built an altar
to the God of Israel. By the way this is
not my translation this comes from
whatever this
Safari I has and
that's another mistakes of theirs and
anything good I
cleans up while the other thing is I am.
I don't like when I read you know when
it gives you God the eternal one of
Israel. Give me a break. Hashem I don't
know what
I don't want to have how many pages do I
have to go but anyway
I had you know I built an altar to God
I'm going to say well
as Moses I'm going to say Moses after
that had commanded the Israelites and as
is written
in the book of the teaching of Moses in
the Torah.
The an altar of unhewn stone upon which
no iron had been wielded. They offered
it
the burnt offerings the Ola to Hashem
and they brought sacrifices of well
being at shalomim and there on the
stones he inscribed a copy of the of the
teaching that Moshe had written for the
Israelites.
All Israel stranger and and citizen
alike with their elders
officials and magistrates stood on
either side of the ark facing the Levium
Kohanim you know the the Kohanim from
Levium who carried the Aron.
Half of them faced Har Grizim and half
of them faced Har Eval as Moshe had
commanded them in order to bless Israel.
After that he read all the words of the
teaching the weather the blessing the
curse just as is written in the Torah.
There was not one word of all that Moshe
had commanded that Joshua failed to read
in the presence of the whole
congregation of Israel including the
women and children and the strangers who
accompanied them. All right. That is
what it says in the safer of Yeshua.
That's what I was that which I mentioned
and spoke about last time. But I was to
show you now where those sources are
that I didn't give you. There are
sources there two sources in the Torah
about this um spectacle on Har Eval and
Har Grizim. And here it says here first
time we read it is in the beginning of
Parshat Re'eh. And it begins with Re'eh
Anochi Noten Lifneichem Hayom Bracha
Uklala. Behold this day I set before you
a blessing and curse. The blessing if
you obey obey the commandments of your
God and that I enjoin upon you this day.
The curse if you do not obey the
commandments um of your God but turn
away from them the path and so on and so
forth. And um
it goes on
as we'll see
um to in more detail. Actually I it was
I I mistakenly
left out that last verse because the
verse afterwards said
um
these shall give the resident Eloheima
and you will find that uh on Har Eval
Har Grizim Eloheima Be'ever Hayarden
Acharei Derech Mevo Hashemesh as it says
behold these two mountains you will find
on the western part of the
of the um
Jordan.
And he
he actually defines and depicts exactly
what it is the Torah does that in Re'eh.
I was [snorts] more fascinated when
a um
>> [clears throat]
>> nephew of mine who a middle aged young
became a tour guide which is a lot of
work and is really terrific. And he said
come I got to show you something with I
um Chol Ha Moed Pesach a couple of years
ago his parents my cousins went there
and um
we went actually he wasn't my he's not
my nephew he's my cousin's son but they
were so close we grew up around the
corner with each other. Anyway so he
talked me and one of the places he went
to he said okay come here this is what
and he said to me remember what the
Torah says um
when it defines where we are and he
showed me
Derech you know what it says in the
Torah in Re'eh.
Eloheima Be'ever Hayarden
>> [clears throat]
>> the western side of Jordan Acharei
Derech Mevo Hashemesh. And there is a
road they call Derech Mevo Hashemesh.
You know and you find it and it goes in
the next to Shechem and as it's detailed
in the Torah
there is he showed me coming down in
Jordan and coming across the Jordan and
there it is and
and it's fascinating.
I said boy you know
I guess God knew
about the geography pretty well putting
it down in the Torah. It's amazing
amazing. So it's great to be able to
live that. And one of the
of the miracles we have that after we we
we liberated these areas we never were
able to go there and understand that.
The
the Torah scholars and the
and the archaeologists and everything
ran to see these things and they
uncovered phenomenal things. It was very
very interesting. And and the knowledge
we know that's why everybody now
believes that you know [clears throat]
the Jews belong here.
>> [laughter]
>> Yeah right. Anyway so um
I should say should. But anyway um then
we read later on in Parshat
Kitavo.
There is Parshat Kitavo we read in the
next source the details about what are
we talking about at Har Grizim and Har
Eval. And uh
Oh this is the second page.
Yeah this turn you got to turn it
around. Yeah and there it says Moshe and
the elders of the Israel charged the
people saying observe all of the
instructions of Torah that I enjoin upon
you today. As soon as you have crossed
the Jordan into the land that God has
given you you shall set up large stones.
I have yet yes underlined them because
we touched upon the last time that it
seems the Torah says as soon as you
cross the Jordan you should do that. And
I showed you that it wasn't that soon
was it. They had first the the war with
in Jericho then in Ai and the two
battles and so on and so forth took a
while.
But anyway you shall coat them with
plaster and inscribe upon them all the
words of this teaching. So so far that
is just placing what it is say what it
was whether it's the whole Torah that
had to be etched on
these stones or just just the Torah only
certain parts. Either way that was what
was happened to that. And then when you
cross over to enter the land flowing
with milk and honey as God promised you
upon crossing the Jordan you shall set
up these stones which I taught you on
Har on Mount Eval
and coat them with plaster. Right
>> [snorts]
>> Har Eval. There too you shall build an
altar to the eternal there it is again
I'm sorry this I
No.
I'm telling you the amount of ink that
I'm losing with it. Anyway
so I I got an altar of stones. So now
with that this exactly what we
Joshua it says in Joshua it says there
he made the stones put in
and it says as it says in the Torah.
Well, he wasn't kidding. This is what it
says in the Torah. This is what it says
in the Torah.
remarkable
and
It goes through the laws that when you
build an altar
you may not use a a sword any cutting
tool for that but rather you should take
just the the stones as they are and put
them up to make the altar
and your sacrifices and exactly what it
says in So here it is
Joshua didn't make it up himself. This
is
and the closeness between the the words
and even
the none of the laws but the words of
the volume with safer Joshua
makes it very strongly
a point that indeed it they were it was
written at the same time. In other
words, the volume the whole book of the
volume was in that last year in the
desert and then immediately after that
Joshua takes place and starts doing
these things. It's just about the same
generation. That's why the language is
the same.
um
that
I won't go into that but part of the
linguistics
like to see about this. And I told you
in the beginning when I gave you the um
the introduction to safer
Joshua that there are those who believe
that there was only really six books.
the
the Samaritans Shamronim
take these six books.
Not the five books of
the six books books of the five books of
and Joshua's you know that six and
the Muslims also believe these six
books. They see that as one unit.
And it looks
linguistically very true that they're
very close.
A lot of the
the words we see in the volume are found
earlier in the in the
Torah.
Certain words were for the first time we
see that and we do see that in Joshua.
And then as it goes on you see the
years go on. There are different
languages as the
100s of years ago there are a different
way the language is. I think I mentioned
this last time. I try to
try to read the Chaucer and claim that
it's English.
Okay.
So anyway
um
the um
The fact that one had to do this it's
important.
Why it was told by God and told to
Joshua and Joshua carried it out. It's
very simple. You're talking about a I
see a new generation. It is the same as
the as the night 40th year in the
desert.
But those who went through the plagues
and the miracles in the desert
had a pretty strong
opinion that I guess we should
do what God wants us to
cuz remember what happened when we
didn't. So they had they had given
motion of a bundle as their teacher. Not
bad. And I told them what to do and he
taught them and over and over again.
Please understand when I speak of the
Torah and when we do speak of the Torah
and we find out that the first
four books just about except for the
last part of the midbar
were all said in the first two years.
After that there's nothing. I mean
there's in the second in the last year
year and a half maybe something. What
happened? And the answer is simple.
People we have a lot of people who are
quite ignorant
and they like to find aha you see
there's nothing. That is not true. It
was during this time that motion was
teaching these things over and over
again. He did not teach them once put it
down and then sat down and played chess.
He had the time now to spread out as he
said these elders his students who now
began to teach what God the motion had
pronounced and who taught to a
a
class of
students who became teachers who then
spread to more teachers and students and
so on and so forth. That's how the laws
were taught and understood by all of
Israel. So it wasn't a matter they come
and said no
no he wrote it one for me. Well, that
was my students. Anyway, so
that is what we have
and that's how the Torah really
grew and was understood.
Next generation now without a motion
and some of them are now being born and
they would be born after this all
happened. How are they going to know?
So here we have
there's a higher reason in the volume.
and
The idea that the key of life for for
the for the Jew for the nation of Israel
was the observance of the Torah. Very
clearly it's often repeated in the Torah
and often repeated repeated in the Torah
to
Joshua. If you remember the very first
chapter in Joshua
it says I get the volume on the live
it's only then you have to study story
that you know where you'll be able to
succeed and so on and so forth. um
And that is why we mentioned
We mentioned in in in the first time
I I think it's in the first thing you
don't have to have it now that
it says there call you to actually I
think it's in the in the first
It's in this first thing where it says
all you see the second
the second
paragraph on the first
source
All Israel stranger and citizen alike
there the elders and officials and
magistrates they were all there and they
were
women children by the way the women
children and strangers are mentioned in
the Torah too.
um So that's why they were all there.
They were all accepted at that point.
They were all accepted as part of Israel
which means when it says gave him
the strangers
It was people who took upon themselves
the laws of the Torah. They were
outsiders they weren't born Jews but
they became Jewish.
And they were part of it because they
were part of the nation.
And that is a very very important thing.
They were all accepted that way.
That's how important this was.
But there's another reason
of why this is so important. You see
um
This convention this spectacle happened
at this time
um
because upon the entry into the land of
Israel
I'm going back to
one of I think the thesis that I've
mentioned a number of times.
>> [snorts]
>> This is a new generation and therefore a
new nation.
What did they do in the desert? Answer?
They learned. They what? They learned.
I thought you were here last time. Who
but what was I of course they learned. I
did mention that. What did I keep on
saying what the difference was what the
generation in the desert was and what it
was going to be when they entered. What
did I mention that? Anybody remember?
Well, I'm going to
Come on you were there. Come on. What
did they What did I tell you they were
going to do when they entered as opposed
to what they weren't doing going into
the Huh? independent society because
Independence. self governing society
yeah
God, I'm hungry. Here's some man.
Yeah, it was okay but I really wanted
some meat. Here's a slab.
You know it's thirsty. I'll give you
some water.
That was Israel in the desert. They were
very very happy
to take what God gave him.
And from the beginning in the desert God
had told them
ain't going to be that way when you go
in.
When you go into the land of Israel
you've got to do it.
Remember I told you it really started at
the very first months or weeks after
they got
out of the out of Egypt.
Remember that I told you how when they
being chased by the Egyptian hordes that
um
God and they screamed
You know they were Jews. So
God said to motion to tell the people I
shall be with them again. God will fight
it. Don't worry. But
you silent. God's going to take care of
it. Huh?
They said that sounds good.
Weeks later when Amalek comes to attack
them,
what does God tell them?
He tells Moshe, "Go gather an army and
start fighting them." Why? Why doesn't
he say, "Don't worry, I'll take care of
the Amalekites."
They don't. Why? Because God says that's
not the way life goes.
You're not going to get rotten mana,
you're not going to get water, you're
not going to get I'm not going to do it
for you. I'll help you out. I told you
Ben Franklin told us all you know, God
helps those who help themselves.
That's what's going to happen. But you
have to do it. If you don't want to do
it, huh? It's your problem.
I'm not going to do it for you.
And that's what is happening
in the whole book of Yehoshua.
Remember that when Achan ben Carmi ben
Zabdi made a terrible sin and he took
from the the spoils of Jericho, God got
very angry. Why? Because
to the victor
goes the spoils.
That was a senator in 1825 who had said
that by the way.
>> [clears throat]
>> And God had
And they didn't fight anything and
didn't win anything in Jericho in
Jericho.
God had done it for them. You know, the
walls came tumbling down. Remember that?
So they didn't win.
And he and he and therefore and he but
he's taking this
the spoils. What Achan is saying and
others seem to have agreed with him that
we we deserve it.
We deserve the spoils. We are victors.
And you weren't.
So that's why God gets so angry and
there was a big punishment. That's why
they lost that first battle they ever
had in Ai.
God said, "You took it. You think you're
going to do it yourself? Go ahead. Let's
see what happens."
So that's a very important and I told
you that over and over again and I will
repeat it again. You will see because
you know, it's boring and all that you
know.
But this is what happens.
Now, why am I talking about that when it
comes to the blessings and the curses?
Ah, I'm glad you asked the question.
It's a very good reason.
I want you to see this.
Um
Israel in the desert
were really impressed
by the one of the most important things
that really hit them very strongly,
impacted them for many years about why
they have to listen to the Torah. They
had an experience, an experience by a
mountain. Remember that?
The Sinai thing, yeah. Before it was a
hospital. This is where Benei Israel had
in Har Sinai.
And in Har Sinai, they all judged
together, right?
What's happening here in Har Ebal and
Har Gerizim is another Har Sinai for a
new generation.
The bulk of which if that almost all of
them were not there at Har Sinai.
God had to give that thing impact to
this generation that's going to start a
new world of nation here in Israel.
And that is why they had that.
That's exactly
And there were crucial
um
things that were quite
quite obvious. Together, the spectacle
at Har
Har Sinai, right? Um
>> [snorts]
>> What is that they stood at the mountain
and they heard the commands, right? From
God.
And they offered up the public
offerings, the shlamim, the
sacrifices.
And at Sinai right afterwards it said
that they had to
engrave God's words on stone. Sound a
little
familiar to us?
And what happens? Exactly the same
thing. That's what they did in in Har
Gerizim Har Ebal. However, and here
comes the point.
Har Sinai, whose voice did they hear?
God's.
Whose voice did they hear at Har Gerizim
and Har Ebal?
Who was giving the was it the Kohanim
and Levi'im?
Not God now.
Now it's people.
Now it's the people who are doing it.
Um
Har Gerizim and Har
It it was a pretty impressive thing at
Har Sinai. You had you know, the
volcano-like things and there's smoke
and there's fire and there's thunder and
there's rumbling. Ha,
pretty good.
Don't have any of that in Har Gerizim
Har Ebal.
No divines coming down and making
things, "You better do this." God says.
"You're going to have to teach it. Not
me."
And that's what happens there.
What was
engraved on Har Sinai? Who engraved
what?
Answer?
God.
He engraves it on the stone. God you
know.
Who does it in Har Ebal Har Gerizim?
The people are told they have to do it.
Remember?
Har Sinai.
Among the things they were not permitted
to do at Har Sinai, very important. And
when you remember what they weren't
allowed to do there?
Well, they had to separate but they what
were they not allowed to do?
They were not to touch Har Sinai.
And
if you do so, pay
zakoy kel or yaroy yaray.
You can't touch it.
You're not allowed to go on to Har
Sinai.
Where were the blessings and the cursing
curses being done in Har Gerizim and Har
Ebal? They stood on the mountains.
Do you see the difference here?
You realize how
Unless you don't you know, unless you
look clearly um
clearly and carefully,
you will Wait a minute. Wait.
This is like Har Sinai for a new
generation.
But it's less God and more people.
What a powerful thing.
Fantastic.
I'm glad I remembered this or I started
looked it over.
And as it so it says just to give you
what was to said there. This is also
from Devarim.
And there [snorts] we see
that um
the people Moshe
at
and in was not there of course. He said,
"This is what you're going to say when
you get to Har Gerizim and Har Ebal.
These are the blessings and the curses.
There's no blessings here. It's only
curses.
But there is the assumption is the other
side of that is a blessing but
>> [clears throat]
>> you want to
He also didn't want to have the ink to
run out cuz he only gave the curses and
he assumed you're going to know what the
verse is.
But I I
Again, I you see that the people who
the blessing on Har Gerizim, the people
who still stand on Har Gerizim will
include the tribes of
Shimon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph,
and Benjamin. And for the curse, the
following will
stand on Har Ebal, Reuben, Gad, Asher,
Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
They aren't for the
They're going to both are going to be on
the
on
on the mountains. They are then divided
up. And the curses will be
applied to all and the blessings applied
to all but you'll be facing one and
facing the other. That's how it's going
to be. And then the Levites who proclaim
proclaim in a loud loud voice to the
entire body of Israel. And this is what
it is if you're really that interested.
You can see right on on the page 14 all
of that that's there. It says,
"Cursed be anyone who makes a sculp- a
sculp- sculpted or
molten image abhorred by God or hated
by the shots na'im. You know, and sets
it up in secret and all the people shall
respond, "Amen." Cursed one who insults
father and mother and everyone says,
"Amen." What Cursed is one who moves a
neighbor's landmark.
Means steal something else you know.
And they all say, "Amen."
One who misdirects the blind person
on his way.
And that is a limit to the
It means if you mislead somebody.
If you mislead somebody for your own
self, you know.
And it isn't exactly you know, Israelis
never knew and never had no how to say
we don't know. You ask them directions,
they'll say, "Yashar yashar." They have
no
idea. You're misleading them. They go
over there, you know. But they didn't do
it because they didn't want to because
they were embarrassed to tell them I
don't know. Because it's they all know
everything. So, that's misleading
someone. Of course, it says a blind
person who has no way of knowing whether
it's right or wrong. So, therefore, it's
even more.
Anyway,
um uh
one who subverts a curse is one who
subverts the rights of the stranger, the
fatherless, the widow, all the
the less
those who are unfortunately
yeah, not as uh fortunately unfortunate
ones. They all answer amen. One who lies
with his father's wife,
they all say amen. One who lies with any
animal, one who lies with his sister,
one who lies with his mother-in-law, one
who strikes down a fellow Israelite in
secret, one who
accepts a bribe in the case of a
murderer and an innocent person to be,
you know, not good. And cursed be
whoever will not uphold the terms of
this teaching and observe them. And all
the people shall say
amen.
Wow.
That is a pretty
pretty
strong.
Right, exactly right. So, this is what I
wanted to say today. We had the not I
touched on last time and I want you to
understand
why I did that. This was really a
remarkable spectacle
because it was meant to have an impact
on a new
generation
who's now beginning a new world and a
new time in the land of Israel and to
make it clear that it's not the way it
was.
You got to do it yourself, guys. You've
got to understand.
You kind of have I can told you God had
to tell to tell Mosha. Mosha told
Yeshua, go out and fight.
God's not going to do it for you.
So, I took poor
I mean
Yeshua had a pretty good teacher.
He was he's the coil of Mosha Abenu and
then he worked for me. He's in the army.
Amazing. Lucky star right now. It's in
the kingdom. So,
but this is precisely the difference.
This is what God wants of us to do, not
to just have it done.
That's what's going to be a new
new thing. So, that
I just thought with the story of the
black blessings and the curses. And now
we get to the story of the Gibeonites. I
believe we started that last time also.
Um
and
there you see that the Gibeonites just
quickly the synopsis I have it here in
case you want to quickly look at it.
First, it starts with the
this is part of the battles that
Yeshua now starts to go. Remember, he's
got to take over the land. Again, God
says, I ain't going to do it. You got to
do it. You You want to have it, go.
Back in the Torah it says
to draw
Wherever you stand, I you will take
that. And wherever you go, wherever you
march,
I will see that you're successful and
you'll win the battle. But if you ain't
going to watch, if you're going to stay
back and say someone's going to do it
for you, it's not going to happen.
It's clearly said that in the Torah.
So, the give Anyway,
Yeshua begins in taking over the the
larger alliances and the more powerful
armies that are found there. As we'll
see, there's 31 kings. Don't get too
impressed with kings, you know. They
were barely any They were They were like
a
a mayor. You'll excuse that expression,
too.
You'll find they were the heads of the
the cities. Sometimes a city will have
thousands of people and that's pretty
impressive. And sometimes they're
smaller, but they were the heads of
a city or a specific type of
clans they have like
Israel had tribes, so did they.
You
know, so on and so forth. So, and the
heads of that they were called the
kings.
That's how it was. That's why it says
the the Philistines the Philistines in
the back of the
back back in the Torah yet in Bereshit.
And Plishtim, they said there were five
kings. Five kings to one for like, yeah,
because there were five larger cities.
Azah and
Ashtor and Ashkelon.
So,
anyway,
um they he begins to fight
as I mentioned before, understand it
wasn't
Yeshua's job to
to conquer every single one of these
enemies as you find it, but rather to
put a down the threat of a strong army
and put basically be able to
have Israel strong enough to finish the
job, which by the way, they don't do,
which is why the Tanakh is not six
books.
It's all lonely because after Yeshua
and when in the end of Yeshua and the
beginning of Shoftim, we find out that
the
Lord words that God said to him to go
and to chase out the pagans and those
who won't accept them. And to them, you
can go out or you can die. Um
that
was never done.
That was never done. And therefore,
from the beginning of Shoftim on,
this is where all our headaches start.
Every single book tells about the sins
of Israel and how they have weakened and
weakened and got worse, sometimes
better, then the worst.
But it wouldn't have happened had they
done what they were supposed to.
We would think the end of Yeshua or the
beginning of Shoftim should end by
Yakam, another leader, and he built the
Bet Hamikdash.
And we were all happy. End of the story.
And didn't happen that way.
Anyway, um
part of the story so we have here with
the Gibeonites. The
There are people in from the town of
Gibeon who knew how strong and they
heard about the miracles, whether it was
splitting the Yarden, whether it was the
victory over Jericho, or the remarkable
victory over the Ai,
and also about these five powerful
people. And
the five There were five powerful kings
which they do they allied. They hadn't
started yet, but when the Gibeonites
heard about this, they said, "We ain't
going to stay with them. We we
We know how strong they are. We can't We
cannot defeat them, nor do we think that
the other
kings will." So, they came and they
disguised themselves as people who came
from afar away.
Knowing that Israel was told to say all
of the the
those who live in this land, the
aborigines,
are going to have to get thrown out or
accept the lack of of um
shall I say not polytheism, but but
about uh
idolatry and paganism.
Uh
and and they therefore they dressed up
in you know, really bad clothing and
very old clothing,
moldy bread, and
you know, whatever canteens they had
were these skin skins were old. They
showed themselves of this
We've been
We've been marching from way of
And they heard about how wonderfully
your God is and we [clears throat] came
here. And when Yeshua said, "Well, where
are you from?" No, we we we're from far
far away. You see, look how look at what
we have. We have all the all the stuff.
And so, they accepted him them and they
said, "We will be your allies."
Oh, okay.
And about two three days later, they
found out they were living a couple of
miles away and that's where they're
And they got very angry.
But they had taken themselves an oath.
And they had said, "We made a peace
treaty. We have a treaty we cannot break
because we did it in the name of God."
So, in the end, the story goes on that
they
you are cursed and you will be still
We're not going to harm you, but you
will be our attendants. You will be our
servants. You will be self. And you're
not going to have any of these positions
of power or anything. That's the story
of the Gibeonites which we had gone
through.
Uh
and
to this day, it remains a question G,
was he right? Was he wrong?
Shouldn't they have given that agreed to
it or not?
Whatever. So, that was that's what's.
Now,
the
Okay, the ongoing battles. That's where
we actually had were up to last time.
It's amazing how
it takes me a whole class to find out
what we're up to. [clears throat]
Uh
These are now the other battles that as
I said, the bulk of of
Yeshua, Sefer Yeshua, are the battles,
but mostly the divisions of the
the tribal divisions of the land. And
that actually goes from about
Parshat Bet well para cuff bet I must
say a 10 11 of these things and don't
worry, I'm not going to go through that.
Um, but I will do is to tell you these
stories about some of the battles. You
can see here I have I don't need to say
that the
which is interesting. Um, and let's see
I have time to do this at the the bottom
of page 16. I think you have that,
right? Yes.
And hey H, yeah.
When I don't need to say that the king
of Jerusalem heard of Israel's victory
of the eye uh, over the eye and their
destruction of
and the alliance with the Gibeonites, he
became frightened and concerned and he
gathered the kings of
Eglon and Lachish and Jarmuth and Hebron
and they attacked the city of Gibeon.
This is part of the Gibeon story, too.
They attacked the city of Gibeon and the
Gibeonites called out to Joshua, their
ally, for help. And with Hashem's
blessing and
so listen, this is interesting.
God wasn't happy with the that instead
of asking God should they make an
alliance with them, they did anyway.
But God said to them, but you made the
alliance, you have to keep it. And
therefore, with God's blessing, Joshua
and his men left Gilgal, which is was at
that point the
there where they were camped. At night
they surprised the five kings,
thoroughly defeating them and pursuing
them from the area. During the pursuit,
God rained down large hailstones upon
the enemy, killing multitudes of the
armies outside of the Beth Horon.
Everyone knows about Beth Horon. If you
if if you drive if you're driving from
Jerusalem up to
Modi'in about middle way of that side on
the right side is Beth is Horon, Beth
Horon. Actually, it's this and they just
they're actually increasing, also.
Anyway, that's the yard.
And during the attack
Joshua required more time for victory,
cried cried out to God and cried out
actually Shemesh big of own dome the
area the Emek Ayalon. I say that cuz
these are very famous statements. He
called out for the
for the sun to stop. Uh,
but the sun that was over Gibeon but the
sun
and the the moon that was
going up on Emek Ayalon, he told them to
stop. In effect, he was um,
he's stopping the revolution of the
earth and lengthening thereby the
daytime. Interesting thing, I I heard a
while ago a number of
of historians and others looked through
this and scientists said there was a
point that for some reason they said
there was a where the the timing went
off in this time and where well, the day
was made longer. He said they said they
don't know how it happened, but we do.
Anyway, um, and that's how he finished
the um,
the war.
Eventually,
Israel captured the enemy kings hiding
in a cave and they hanged them to and
they went and captured the cities and
settled them, okay? And then I gave you
just for fun the 31 of the basic kings
that [clears throat]
God had promised that they would give
the conqueror and that Joshua did
conquer and uh, [snorts]
do you see where it is?
>> [clears throat]
>> I gave you the nice little rest and the
nice I'm sorry, list that you have there
and
um,
and what's very very interesting here
cuz I'm going to have to stop before we
start the division
that
I'm trying to remember
if I I've got I didn't have it here, but
yeah, I'm probably going to have to do
it next time, but I
I will tell you something very
interesting
that they it says they conquered all
these things and then it mentions one
thing and that is
Joshua conquered these places including
this place you may have heard of,
Jerusalem.
And it said that
and then it says
but Yehudah who is who was the ones who
were in charge of you know, were not
able to fully
leave it that way
and as a result, we'll go later on, it
was David who had to come and conquer
Jerusalem. And many say, well, well, why
wouldn't he have to? They didn't in
Joshua. So, well, well, we do all of
Joshua. You'll see the verse that says
there that at once it was conquered by
David and his men, I'm sorry, by Joshua
and his army,
time went on, they didn't have
however it was the Judeans who lived
there didn't have the power to
eventually get rid of the people who
lived there. They were called the
Jebusites.
The Jebusites. And therefore,
they stayed there and eventually took
over. And only when David came that he
was able to chase out the Jebusites.
One war there.
And in fact,
um, we see that
>> [clears throat]
>> para cuff valid in Samuel bet
that at the very end of the story, we
have Joshua, I'm sorry, David
>> [clears throat]
>> who
um,
all of Israel was given a plague because
they had start because David had allowed
them to have a census
and this which God does not like and
they didn't do the census properly.
Obviously, David, you know,
lost the census. But anyway, uh, they
went on and
God plagued and there were plague all
over and is about to attack Jerusalem.
You know, David says, no, no, said give
me a plague. I went on to sin. Don't my
poor people, don't really my my my my
sheep, he said. Please don't kill them.
God was impressed. In the end,
they did and
he said David he stopped the plague and
David so happy wanted to offer up a
um,
sacrifice to God to thank him at the
place where he was what that stopped the
plague. Where was he? On the top of this
hill. Uh, and was it was it was
called the place by it was what's his
name? Uh, the
from Jebusite. He was a Jebusite. He was
a Melchizedek. He said supposedly he was
and he now became Israelite and he
granted them that piece of land and God
David says, what do you think I am, a
Jew? I'm not going to go for free. I'll
pay you for it and he does that and he
has it he builds a altar, gives a
korban. It's very nice.
And then you know what you can do?
If you're looking the value I'm in bet
uh, yeah, in the
para gimel
begins and tells us that
and then Joshua begins to I'm sorry,
Hamal begins to build the Beit
Hamikdash
at
at the place of Jebusite of exactly
where where it says there the Har
Hamoriah which says where Moshe where
David had
taken over that area of Jebusite. That's
where the Beit Hamikdash was built.
That's just a nice ending there that the
connection to you about the Jebusite.
Anyway, Hashem
um, next time they're going to be the
division of the land by tribe and not to
all the tribes, just the whole what's
going to happen there that's very very
interesting. Specifically, we're going
to go through the story about Caleb.
Remember him from he was still he's
still hanging around. He's 85 years old
this time now.
