The parsha just needs solving.
We have the
famous pasuk.
I could just borrow who is going to
perform a bris milah so to speak in
parenthesis in italic marks.
What exactly does it mean um mal shalom
of l'vavcha?
What does it mean what will happen over
there?
So the
um
the Ramban here says a p'shat.
Um the Ramban's p'shat is not everyone
agrees with it, but it certainly is a
very very important p'shat to understand
um the process of mal shalom of
l'vavcha.
The
um
the the Ramban explains as follows.
That a person
in
when he was created when Adam HaRishon
was created he says um a person had
b'chira
because Hakadosh Baruch Hu wanted us to
use b'chira.
So we have a b'chira to choose between
good and bad.
Now, the b'chira doesn't mean just
we're free to choose this or this.
People tend to think that b'chira is in
is is in the choice part of it.
Um
the the the word the the b'chira is much
deeper than that.
B'chira means we have
two
um two directions
that we're being pulled in.
The uh uh
our bodies
are our bodies love and desire different
types of pleasures. Whether they're very
physical pleasures, which are called
ta'avah, or more emotional drives called
chemdah, the desire for power, the
desire for for wealth, things like that.
Those are um so to speak that that's
part of us. It's part of our
personality. On the other hand, there's
a part of our personality that is
um driven to to to achieving spiritual
um good. We have uh a desire to become
wise, to become good, and things like
that.
So, a person has
it it a person's personality does not
come to one head, it comes to two heads.
We have in us a part that is totally
devoted to physical type of pleasures.
That's what we wish to have, that's what
we want to have, that that makes us
tick. That's one part of us.
And then there's a part of us that
really would like to have
um [clears throat] something spiritual.
Both of both of them it's it's a
combination of a neshamah and a guf
being joined together. Each one has its
own mechanism.
In a sense that that guf, that body that
is affixed to our neshamah,
is is is called the arlah of the lev.
It's it's the the arlah is the the skin
that's hard, tough, um
uh
something that needs to be gotten rid
of. And this is what a person is. So,
bechirah is not just that we can do as
we wish, it's that we're struggling to
to between two different wishes. What is
it that we exactly wish? That's where
bechira lies.
Now, Hakadosh Baruch Hu made it
made that our nature
cuz Hakadosh Baruch Hu wanted more than
anything else
that we
become the people
that we we make ourselves in into into
the into the tzaddik. That's the purpose
of bechira.
This is ongoing and it it lasts until
the time of Mashiach.
When Mashiach comes
um that it's that that's over
and then there is no point to it.
At that point we will no longer have a
drive or hankering for anything bad.
And therefore
in a sense we're not going to have a
choice. Let's give an example.
Um just a parallel.
We can Does a person have a choice to
sit on a hot piece of steel?
Well, yes, he he can if he wishes.
But he's not struggling because no part
of him wishes to sit on a hot piece of
steel.
So the person might have a theoretical
free will but doesn't really have
any desire whatsoever to sit on that on
that metal.
So it's free will in in theory but it's
not in in real in that real.
The same thing will happen when Mashiach
comes. Hakadosh Baruch Hu will remove
our drives
for the crass, for the vulgar, for the
bad, and so on.
We'll be left only
with the inner drive and the yearning
for ruchniyus.
So the middle that will not be any
bechira. It says Yemot Hamashiach if
it's we we will not have because we will
have eliminated the alternatives.
Now, not everyone agrees that the Rambam
is older than the Rambam holds that at
at the time of Mashiach will be exactly
the same. It's just that that will have
a melech and all of that. There are
different opinions in in the shrine, but
the Ramban here is a very very important
Ramban.
So, again, the Ramban is explaining this
possuk of
Malchus of meaning as follows.
A person, as long until Mashiach comes,
the purpose of the world is to become
closer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu through
man's struggles and realizations.
This requires
free choice, not just in the sense that
we can theoretically do whatever we
want.
>> [clears throat]
>> It means there are two of us.
There's each and every one of us is a
part of us is something that desires
um the real good because that part of us
is really ruchni. And there's a part of
us that only desires
physical things and [clears throat] you
know and the
chemdah and ta'avah because that's what
it is.
That creates
the environment of
uh bechira.
That creates the then we can choose.
When Mashiach comes, there's not going
to be any purpose for that.
And since there won't be any purpose for
that,
then we're going to
have um
>> [clears throat]
>> Hakadosh Baruch Hu remove the drive from
us.
And yes, theoretically, we can always
do what's wrong, but we it's not going
to be a struggle because we don't have
any drive for doing that which is not
right.
