Rabbi hyim is here he's the plant
manager at manaev is that accurate yes
that's plant manager at manit and it's
an honor to speak with you and thank you
very much for being here how long have
you been with manevitz I with manevitz
over 15 years wow that's a long
time
um it is one very large
operation it's all Under One Roof now as
we learned earlier I mean I think it was
always Under One Roof but now it's been
expanded and that roof is so much
larger uh H how is one able to control
everything that's going on in a facility
like that you have a support St that you
can rely on and a lot of time on your
feet moving around I can imagine the
fact that everything is kosher of course
you know and the consumer is always
curious about this uh add so many
different elements what could you tell
us about an operation like this and
trying to make sure that everything is
adhered to by all caser standards well
you start with a complt of M that you
can rely on uh they must be all over the
place they are all over the place
different than most businesses the work
for us starts a lot earlier we can't
just go out and buy ingredients we need
to Source ingredients right and a lot of
our business is K and It's tricky to
find K ingredients for some things so
that is a challenge and then the way you
schedule things what can run before what
what needs to be CED order to run things
can you give me any example of this
could you give me any question that's
come up about you know timing and and
when you could do the run or an
ingredient that was really hard to find
for this year or some other years or
anything that that could give us a good
example of what you're talking about how
much time you have left oh good give me
give me give me give me a couple to
start
off you know we run our gilter fish and
our Soups On similar equipment Gil fish
is p power the soups are FL so you have
to do what type of operation in between
so you would have to either schedule it
right or take a day down because you
can't cash within 24 hours of production
and it's those are the type of things
that keep us busy lot of rules and
regulations yes a lot of rules and
regulations and what about the
ingredients do you think of anything off
hand that's been difficult to obtain or
that you had to struggle with to finally
you know get the right thing for the
product that they're trying to make
there manevitz yeah there are times when
marketing will come up with a new
product and it tastes good when we test
it in the kitchen but now trying to go
find those ingredients
as we have to substitute or be very
creative and you know what's funny
everyone today thinks that hey almost
everything is coach PESA but you could
attested the fact that there's a long
way to go with that there's a long way
to go with that it's funny when you
think about it the Israelis are on the
Forefront and we get a lot of help from
does that mean why are they so much
better at it or they just or they just
spend a lot more time at it that much
more of a demand there so they where you
know when I go to a manufacturer in
Texas and tell them I want this enzy
special he looks at you that's not what
I'm talking about at least over there
there are people in food chemistry and
in science who understand what we're
talking about and can help us get what
we need well very interesting Rim is
here he's manag chev's plant manager for
the last 15 years he's been with the
company uh what could you tell us about
this season specifically is there
anything that uh that stood out to to
you or that you could tell us about the
brand new products or from the brand new
products we're very excited the grape
juuce obviously is a big one for us
there was a lot of CAS work that needed
to go into that to make it a really
mahadin product this is produced to the
highest standard full compliment of M
from the time of the crush till the time
of the bottling right I mean was what
that's what's so fascinating to me and I
I asked David this question
earlier how did Welches adjust to that
when you when you sit down with them and
say you know in order for this to be a
product that we could put out there as a
coach for product all this has to be
done supervision at every single level
procedures that they're likely not used
to did they look at you like you're
crazy at that point like how do they how
do they react well a little bit the
number one in America the customer
always right so we came as a custom what
the customer needs right but with the
support of the OU who provide the hea
and they come with a body of experience
and they're able to make recommendations
of how to overcome certain challenges
and how to to make things that we need
to be done should not be as painful for
the company right as they when when they
F when you first come in and tell them
this is what I need they think oh my God
what's going on there but they so it
takes a day or two for them to get used
to the idea huh and then finally they
could start with the procedures I I can
just imagine what that first meeting is
like though but with with the expertise
of the the M who were there it went off
without a hitch and it's ongoing and it
is really a premium product that anybody
can be comfortable to use for kidish for
the arocas for everything our uh
audience
should appreciate the masim right a lot
of us don't think because we see it as a
supervisory role not doing much
certainly not physical labor usually as
far as we know but there's an expertise
there that really is the barrier that
keeps control over the kosher product
there's an expertise there specifically
with wine the Mas are actually doing the
physical right that's true with wine
there's no choice yeah they have no
choice but to do
it but even the uh the products that are
not wine there is a there a level of
alert eress and a level of expertise
that has to be acknowledged absolutely
certainly when we go out to do things in
different places and you take long they
often times end up doing more than just
as work because for certain plants it's
so strange to them they don't know what
you want yeah if we had a long time of
here they would confirm that they've
done practically everything right yes
yeah that's how it works is right uh
thank you so much for joining us it's my
pleasure let me be the first one to wish
you a happy PES thank you very much you
must love seder night knowing it's all
over finally huh no next one is only
year away I know it's only year away it
starts the next day right yeah we picked
that up Le you can enjoy hopefully yes
RAB hyam is the manevitz plat manager
one of the people who's
responsible for delicious products and
kosher products coming out of mana
chevit and it is time I am told for yet
another raffle drawing am I correct am I
right another raffle drawing where's the
bag of raffle tickets next you oh this
is the bag yes I I thought this was the
I thought this was the uh The Prize
Package I'm so confused sometimes it's
unbelievable ladies and gentlemen for
the second time today we are going to
make a shopper and shopright in paramis
very very happy that's what we do we
make people happy that's what it's all
about we bring joy to so many folks on a
regular basis but one in particular is
going to be extremely happy right now oh
yes and that person's name is wow
wow wow wow I am going to defer to my uh
penmanship expert Miriam L
wallik okay what do you got is it
glattus is the first name glattus yes I
think it's
Gladis yeah with a B the last name
starts with a B you think gadus B
congratulations you think after teaching
Middle School English for 15 years and
teaching seventh grade boys I'd be able
to read anything right but that skill
seems to have been lost Belmont Belmont
Bell I have an idea let's go into the
ShopRite computer system how we just
call her these look for glattus B
Because doesn't every Shopper and shoppr
have one of those cards right don't they
have those those cards you save a lot of
money each time we're going to call
glattus okay that's a better idea that
we're going to call glattus I apologize
because Rim has uh has brought along
with him something that I had I actually
all week long I've been talking about uh
and and I was about to I was about to
let you exit without showing it the um
one of the things about man s when
you're a company that's begun in the
that began in the 1880s one of the
things is uh is memorabilia one of the
things are classic items that people
wouldn't
believe uh are still around and still
exist and you have a whole collection of
these types of items yes I do I
obviously couldn't bring all of it but I
just brought you a few things just to
give you a flavor of what some of the
old time stuff look
like now why am I having trouble with
this word obviously it's manevitz C of
PES oh Ginger I'm saying to myself what
is that how do you say that inber ingber
is Ginger inber is Ginger this is a
manag s this can of Ginger is from how
long ago in your
opinion probably 50s the 1950s pretty
cool all right if you need Ginger to pay
you know where to go just part of what
was interesting to me about it is that
the consumer was such that they felt it
was important half yish halfish half
English that's so cool this is would be
interesting for people who remembered
this era Bor is something that man is
well known for so they came out with a
promotion one year they called it the
Bor belt the borch belt the manevitz
borch belt and if you look carefully at
it you'll see the names of all the old
Catal hotels oh my gosh Concord Evans FS
viiew gibbers Gilberts the granite gr
singers homak golden Irvington Clyde's
what this is a shame that I know all of
these Kutcher Carmel morning side
Neville Ry brows Esther Manor wow
unbelievable that's cool a borch belt
got it a borch belt yeah the cat
obviously was known as the borch belt it
certainly was there's no way Jamie gets
that reference no chance right no she's
in her 20s do you know what the borch
belt was Hey where's the bottle she just
thinks it's funny
oh where's the what do you call it bu is
there man of's borch Ellie Rosenfeld has
the bottle of borch that came with this
yeah but where's the borch still make
porch or not absolutely they still make
Porche
absolutely ar ar Yanti in my house who
was borch and potatoes probably like
that in a lot of homes yeah what else
you have here Rabbi we have just some
old cookbooks and this is going back a
while this was printed in 1928 and if
you look at them everything they had was
English and
yish from
Mev or if you prefer the English
version tempting kosher dishes
amazing tempting kosher dishes from Mev
are the recipes also in yish both yes
unbelievable English and yish bilingual
a little different than some of the
cookbooks we see today no be careful not
to you would you say a little different
than some of the cookbooks we see today
yes but I'm sure they have margarine in
there also wow that's pretty cool that's
amazing and it was obviously a
bestseller cuz they went and made
another one in 1930 1930 the hard cover
edition of check out that binding
tempting kosher dishes from the B
shevitz company which was in what city
at that time everybody Cincinnati
Cincinnati
Ohio wow hey do you know that I walked
into a teenx synagogue on a shabas and a
woman came over to me and said her last
name was
manevitz so she is from I mean I assume
the extended is is it a big extended
family yep well I grew up with the
gavensky weren't they man of shs yes
yeah W see has two can play I see that
and just to continue that Trend this was
on 1949 so it was still going on for
while get this English can you imagine
how excited they were the guy who
thought that they should put a mat on
the cover they probably thought that was
the coolest thing ever look at this a
mat on the cover are we Innovative or
what I hope you're watching whoever's
listening turn on your computer and
watch us you could see these things that
we're displaying tempting kosher dishes
cookbooks from years and years ago
because yes because Cas was such an
important part of manevitz they felt the
need to advertise and be visible in
Publications like par this and this is
an this is a matzah advertisement forev
in ha parades in 1951 wow and it was
sent to somebody in Waterbury
Connecticut so I guess there was a
Jewish community in Waterberry even then
yes unbel everything comes around again
that's for sure this is an interesting
thing man a she for several years
printed
hag this is the manevitz ha for PES the
B manevitz company in Jersey City New
Jersey we pass that building every
single day on the way to work for many
many years until 7 years ago you moved
there 7 years ago they moved out of
Jersey City now that's what's
interesting about this one it's the same
ha but they changed the die plate and if
you see this is printed in 1939 as
people the war refugees are starting to
come over the Seder to honor and welcome
refugees in the Grand Ballroom of the
Broadway Central where my in-laws got
married at the Broadway Central on
Second Avenue wow so they they made a
big S for all imigrant they made a Sor
for immigrants and this was in this was
in 1939 April of 1939 just the time that
my mother would have come to that area
from Germany wow wow one other thing
that I got lucky to find
this because dman AIT I don't know if
you know the history a little bit about
him he was born in Lithuania he was
aant he
had he came here as an immigrant he was
a initially and he started making Matas
just for himself cuz he needed Matas and
eventually the neighbors started task
and he started the basement operation
and the rest is history that's how it
all begins huh but he never forgot his
roots his Ro was always something that
was near and dear to him so he decided
at some point to fund Yesa in me you
talking in the 1900s and the
19s so uh today we have very modern ways
of fundraising back in the day how would
they fundraise so what they did was they
would take pictures of the T of the
right and if you look at some of the
names underneath them these are people
who turned out to be the who who of Y
lat and they would take photographs of
the SM that they got to send it to him
and if you take the time to read these
you see it like he's a tal
in these
of and if you look at who the were from
from sonel
from it's quite
unbelievable how this was so important
to him he made this part of his company
as part of his will was that they
establish a foundation 10% of the
company went to charity and there were
family members up until the' 50s he died
in 1914 he was relatively young man he
died at
57 it's quite amazing what this man did
in the few short years he had here
unbelievable you know sedoka and
community outreach and these were the
types of things that
were never left him or his Guiding Light
and this is some of the Heritage that we
carry on today with Outreach and and a
successful Jewish businessman who
understands his role in philanthropy
simple as that a great example of that
and I'm so glad you told me that cuz I
never knew that
it's amazing fantastic anything else uh
there's lots more but I just brought one
little bag today here I'll just show you
one last thing that I brought we us
should do a tour of you your Museum one
of these
days again because kasas and Hal was so
important I assume that means the the
bakery he collected Letters From Any
Rabon who would be passing through
Cincinnati he got him to write a letter
like a h on his mat
Bakery and you find letters here from Dr
the guest book yeah and you'll find
letters here written in from Dr M Hiller
from Berlin in the 19 19s it's from
Detroit The Collection is is is very
interesting American ronam European
ronam cases was his number one thing
this is the actual page right it's not a
copy no these are copies these are
copies okay they look amazing wow thank
you so much for sharing this with us
you're welcome unbelievable
Rabbi that was a that was quite a treat
to say the least quite a treat my
pleasure you know there are auction
houses that take these types of items
and auction them off I'm really curious
what the value is out there it's a real
collectible these are you have any idea
what this would be worth out there uh I
got lucky with that one that
there's uh the guy who was the plant
manager before me did some Consulting
work for a company in Pennsylvania candy
company yeah and he didn't want to take
money cuz he was friendly with the
owners there so the owner said oh you
work in manit I got something for you
and he gave him this unbelievable so it
it's part of our history from time time
you come across people who say oh my
bbby my great grandmother and you know
they'll give you something that has been
laying around for 50 60 years but you're
right if you try to look for stuff on
this on eBay even people who aren't
interested in manevitz or Jewish memory
abilia but Tin Can Collectibles are are
hot item unbelievable thank you what a
pleasure you're welcome thank you very
muchis and PES as we say
