JM in the AM on a Wednesday morning
broadcast and we mentioned that uh we
discovered actually that the great
Shulie Rond and I know that not
everybody in the uh in the US is as
familiar with him as they are in Israel.

Rond is coming in from Israel. He'll be
in concert live in New York on Tuesday,
June the 9th. That's this coming Tuesday
starting at 7:30 p.m. at one of our
favorite venues, Town Hall on West 43rd

And we wanted to speak to somebody who
can give us a little background about
Shuli Rand and about this whole event.
And we tracked down Assaf Talmudi. Assaf
is the musical director for Shuli Rand.
And he joins us from Israel here at JM.
Assaf. Shalom. Shalom and thanks for
joining us.
Shalomar. How are you doing?
>> Barak hashem. Doing great. I was so
happy to hear that Shuli Rand is coming
to New York. Now I said that a lot of
people here are not as familiar with him
as they are in Israel. C can you tell
this audience, the people listening in
the New York area, can you tell this
audience just how big a star, how big a
celebrity Shulie Rond is in Israel?
I will I will I will talk to his
qualities more than for his stardom. He
is a big star. But first of all is a
very unique example of an
ultraorththodox artist
that operates in Israel both in the
fields of cinema and in the fields of
music while completely
talking to all sides and all all layers
of Israeli society because truly started
as a
real estate actor. She did a very famous
Hamlet back in the 90s.
>> Wow.
>> Went went ultra orthodox
and continued to create both film and
music
that is both loved by a religious
audience but also very much appreciated
by a secular and artistic circle.
And in that sense is one of a kind.
>> You know, it's interesting, you know,
here here we don't have that as much. A
lot of people can't comprehend that uh
what you have in Israel where a
performer can be attractive to orthodox
people and at the same time be
attractive to secular people to you know
have an audience among both groups and
really across the board. And and when
you look at that when you look at that
um sample when you look at that uh that
whole concept he has been like number
one right he's like he's like the guy
that has been able to bridge the gap
between secular and religious
>> he
he was also one of the first to do it
>> right
>> because Shulie started
he is the first wave of the religious
influence on Israel Israel, Israeli
folk, rock, pop, scene. He started
pretty early and many of the uh many of
the young younger talents nowadays will
say that he is the godfather of this
movement,
>> right? But let me tell you in terms of
the depth
>> of creation,
he's still unique because he moves very,
you know, surely is coming now to New
York with a film that will be premiered
will premiere in the Tribeca Festival. A
film that Shuli wrote. It's called the
the wedding entertainer directed by
Giddal with the music of yours truly and
this this is going to be shown in
Tribeca. So he still has the ability to
create
in the general while dealing with with
religious topics and religious and
topics that are interesting to the ultra
orthodox community. art in the language
of modern cinema, modern music, quality
writing. So that's he's quite unique,
>> pretty amazing. The uh the film is
called The Wedding Entertainer, music by
Assaf Talmoodi, and Assaf is with us via
telephone from Israel. So So let's let's
go through these pieces here. First of
all, on Tuesday night, he's going to be
live at the Town Hall, which is uh on
West 43rd Street in New York City. It's
a great venue. It's a tremendous uh
arena and Schulam Leur is going to be
his special guest. It's really an
opportunity for people who have not been
able to see him in concert uh to see
him. I know that he was at the H concert
uh in one of the most recent H concerts,
but but there are very few opportunities
to see him live and in person in the US
a Tuesday night at town hall. They'll be
able to do that. And I assume that any
song that's familiar to people who know
Shouli Rand, whether it's Bes or Malik,
I mean, he'll be he'll be doing all of
his greatest hits, right?
>> Yes. Yes. He will do a a a he will do a
thorough
selection of his career, including the
bigger hits of the last couple of years.
It's actually pretty rare that an artist
in his 60s still has a top chart
song. You know
>> that's true.
>> It doesn't happen this every day. Now he
has a a very big hit called Leavan
>> and he will do he will do a selection
from 25 years of of singer songwriting.
>> And you have and you have Scholam Leur
on the bill. Is there going to be a duet
or not?
I'm sure there will be at least one duet
this you know when when when an artist
comes to New York some of it depends on
how
on the rehearsal time but I think
everybody's planning
doing doing a a job and presenting this
music at its highest level
>> Assaf Talmudi letting it let letting us
in on some of the secrets of preparing
for an event like Tuesday night. All
right, folks. Town Hall Tuesday night
upcoming June 9th starting at 7:30.

which means David Fida is behind this
whole thing. And then you know it's
going to be an amazing show. Tell me
more Assaf about the wedding
entertainer. What is the film about? I
mean I I assume it's about a wedding
entertainer but what's the angle here?
What makes this film unique?
>> I mean with you with you I can I can use
the proper term because they say wedding
entertainer they mean bad you know you
>> a bad
so and your listeners know it too. So
it's a it's a classic
Jewish tale
with I would say shalom like elements
of a of a ban not in his biggest days.
He needs to get his daughter married.
>> He needs to get the gig. He a rich Jew
is coming from the states to the
Jerusalem to marry his his son and our
our our protagonist sees an opportunity
you know and of course things get
get worse because he's not being on his
highest moral ground while trying to get
and it's it's you know I'm I'm a part of
making this film so I cannot I I'm I'm
pretty sure you will find it remarkable
in more than one way and entertaining
and uh completely kosher by the way.
>> Well, you you know that uh most people
who have heard of Shulie Rand on this
side of the world, it's because of the
movie and we love that one. So the the
guy knows what he's doing.
>> Yeah. And this is a completely different
filming style, you know.
>> Oh, interesting. the styling, the
cinematography.
It's going, it's the same director, the
same star, but doing something something
else in terms of style.
>> Assaf. Oh, I'm sorry.
>> I'm very curious to to to hear what you
think of it. There there will be
screening around Tribeca Festival for
the whole week. So, I guess people can
go to see this as well. Yeah, Tribeca is
going to be uh is going to be um in
competition with the Knicks uh for some
attention during the week, but Tribeca
Film Festival has become a really big
deal over the last couple of decades.
Assaf Talmoodi, he's the musical
director for Shouli Rand. He reminds us
that Shulie is going to be live in

York City with Schulam as a special

And what can I tell you folks? We're
we're we're among the people that knew
who Shulie Rond was way before people on
this side of the world discovered him
and he has always been fantastic. We
love playing his music and you'll have
an opportunity to see him up close and
personal Tuesday night in New York City.
Assaf Niatva looking forward to
welcoming you in the United States and I
hope Tuesday night is a major success.
>> Are you coming?
>> Uh maybe seeing you in person.
>> I might actually be there. I will let
you know. I might actually be there and
looking forward to it.
>> Make sure to come and say hello.
>> I guarantee you I'll do that. Uh,
shalom. Shalom and toadaba.
>> Shalom.
