Blind Tasting with the Herzogs
377 views
The ultimate wine nerd/lover challenge, the blind tasting. We love to blind to keep our senses sharp and to really focus on what’s in our glasses. No label to lead us. We were super impressed with Moty and @joseph_herzog_ on this one! It truly was blind for them! L’chaim! MTI came to visit me from
California this MTI is my neighbor I
told him that he's coming to visit me
and Li his glory decided to come long
story short I'm supposed to blind taste
him he just barged into the office who
opened you the door downstairs was open
no your your lovely manager text your
lovely manager did it so here we go I'm
going to Blind this you
guys what do we need to taste we need to
taste region what do we need style blend
what in order let's just put in the
glass and then we'll
talk we'll go in order what is the last
time somebody blind t with
you often often but I'm not not on not
to a great famous well-known audience
like yours this like a whole big level
this a whole new level when is the
somebody blind for you Tasting Room did
it to me a while yeah and were you okay
the good thing was was INF it was easy
to pick out It's tricky because when
you're tasting blind you know you're
you're obviously tasting like Joseph
said what region is from you're tasting
what varietal it's from first um and
then the last last last thing is if you
happen to have a recollection of which
wine it is um then you can figure out
the wine But It's tricky because just
like if you meet hundreds and hundreds
of people uh you have to you know you
could remember that person but you don't
like your manager downstairs actually
when he walked me up I know I know you
but I don't remember from where okay
right so I remembered him then he says I
met you I met we were together in France
yeah so that was helpful but I
remembered him I recalled his face there
were things about his his his his
talking that I remembered but I couldn't
remember where I knew him from so that
happens very often when you do a blind
tasting but I always to tell you the
first thing I like to do when you're
doing a blind tasting is you smell if
you like it or you don't right so you
need to know if this is a wine that you
want to enjoy that you don't want to
enjoy and then you try to narrow it down
typically you know more you know regions
you know variet you know certain things
he totally came blind so the first thing
I'm going to speak color color this is I
call this a medium thinner thin medium
thinner the nose what what does the
color say so the color says is this a
big this is more of a lighter just
simply this is more I would say a light
red this is not a dark big red so when I
think about light red I would think
right
away I could think more varial like a
Pino like a ganache thinking sanesi I
mean you could go all these different
lighter red sometimes sometimes you
could also get color color tells you a
lot about age what do you what do you
think about the color color is a dead
giveway on age this this is not this is
not so much of an age color as much as
Joseph says it's a lighter color it's
also extremely extremely extremely
fruity there's not a lot of Oak and if
there is Oak it's not what's jumping out
of you this is not a this does not come
Oak first this comes fruit fruit fruit
first um barely any Oak influence I'm
just debating between getting a little
of I don't want to say Old World in
terms of the nose
more French although the younger
vintages you don't get it that often
burgundi and or rone burgundi and
Rome although it's brushing off it's
going more I'm getting actually I'm
getting brighter way brighter notes now
way brighter I'm getting I'm getting a
ton of the strawberry things you
mentioned before uh you know again I
don't want to lock myself into the Pino
style but would you be able to say if
it's a car vintage or it has a few years
of wine on
it you really taking this way you
shouldn't wish you're going to no you're
starting with a blind without knowing
any data and you just want to go through
the whole thing no I'm just saying you
can say you it could have age but it's
not showing tremendous age on the color
we didn't tast yet it's not showing
tremendous age by the way 3 4 years is
not what we're talking that's not when
the color changed that's not age that
he's speaking about you guys are ready
to try because my pens tried it
already
Okay okay for first of all I'm before
tasting I'm just going based on alcohol
alcohol is not a high alcohol so it's St
me to Old World okay I'm surpris
actually's bigger much much bigger than
much bigger much bigger than I thought
from the nose I had fruit I had very
very soft it's much much bigger in the
nose and actually pull back cuz I think
that there is wood in the mouth I get
wood and the nose it was more more just
front
forward yeah European it's definitely
it's it's definitely okay so we
establish are we right are we right that
it's old world old check it off Old
World it has a few years you were right
about that that the color the color is
what the wine is but it definitely
helped for a couple years on If This
Were yeah if this were California you
wouldn't get you wouldn't get the
structure is is Old World structure very
very you think of the wine you like it
you love
it I love the fruit I really love the
nose has nice acid too has nice acid and
and and much much more than I expect
like I said think it's pretty well Balan
I haven't try it in a while and I think
the wine is
beautiful
really I think the tannin are a little
bit out of sync with the fruit if you
ask my personal opinion so in other
words I I don't know if this is part of
the aging process that this happened too
so when I drank it I expected more of a
fruity
G like wine G Pino but I I didn't I
didn't get that when I tasted it is it a
blend it's definitely it's a blend it's
a blend definitely a blend I think but I
don't think it's not a cab based blend
no it's not a c might maybe morow maybe
gach so what what do you think of the
one you like it you love it
or this the Spain
yeah it's old gache old van G yeah he
kept on saying uh amazing yeah that's
what it is no seriously I'm going to
show you the
label okay that's very
good
that's yeah because I made it years ago
it's a
2019 yeah and we made it with you and
the first time but I think the wine is
beautiful it makes sense it's a ganache
it's a how do you like the wine like for
real the I think the talons have to have
to loosen up okay no his what year what
year is it 19 his wines can age for 15
years no problem that's a lot of
concrete also if his wine yeah a lot of
it is concrete so it's stand but it's
Old Vine gnach you're speaking about
really Old Vine gach Why did Why did why
did you think it's
Grimes cuz it couldn't be anything else
I was going I was trying to as we call
peel the onion right so I was trying the
certain flavors it wasn't Italian I that
I knew or that I could put I don't know
it had to be more of the the bright
fruit it was older Vines based on the T
I'll tell you the I think my giveaway
was based on the tanons and the color
and structure there was something here
that I un guys this two minutes that I'm
sitting over here blind tasting this is
the reason why I got into the one in the
first
place thank you so much and hopefully
next year we'll blind T something else
right this and that's how we learn by
the way I even tell my kids constantly
just put the wine in the back I'll be
honest with you I I never tasted this
wine from you so this this also my first
never tast my first that's why I Pi my
first time that I'm tasting this wine
I'm so happy I picked this wine and
thank you so much and wow I I would I
would actually be I would and we we can
find out but I think there's more of the
Karana and the SRA than you would expect
because the granache does not give you
this kind of of of tense um tense
tannant but what I may the reason is
because no it's Old Vine if you know
there's Vineyard which I do know there's
Vineyard I was there you're speaking
about 100y old Vines so what you get the
the tonnage you're getting you're
getting maybe a ton to one and a half
tons to the acre you really get so it's
all the intensity you're getting compar
basic compared to California not to
California compared to Young Vine in any
of those regions you must probably get
four to five tons of the in Israel you
got 16 no no no also in highend wine you
don't get you get five is pushing five
tons to the acre in high end wine thank
you Old Vine that all the goes into
these it's about one and a half ton
that's part of the incredible I just
love doing this thank you so much you
love doing it when it
works no thank you so much to the Tes
how do we close
