Today's stuff is Menachis stuff tzadik
zayin.
And we are at the two dots, about 15
lines from the top of daf tzadik zayin
amud aleph arbah snifin shel zov hoyu
sham v'chulu. Today's daf is being
learned to us by the host of a full
shalom of Chava Miriam bas Malkah Freda
and [ __ ] ben Chaya Leah.
So, we're moving along in the 11th perek
of meseches Menachis.
The topic of the last few dafin has been
the lechem uponim and from there
the shulchan that housed
>> [snorts]
>> the lechem uponim. Now, a disclaimer
before today's daf.
Today is one of several math dafin in
Shas.
So,
we have to pull out our calculators or
the back of the proverbial envelopes
and get ready to make some pretty
intense cheshbonos stating that
the excitement is really going to start
more on the bottom of the amud going
into amud beis. Before that, we still
have another half of amud or so of
gemara to learn. So, the Mishnah was
talking about the physical structure of
the shulchan. The pasuk says in parshas
Terumah
So, the pasuk is describing four
[snorts]
ancillaries to the shulchan. The
shulchan itself was a table.
But, when you looked at the shulchan,
you saw a lot more than a table. In
fact, it looked like a mini skyscraper.
That's all the ancillaries
of the shulchan that are being described
in this pasuk. Specifically, ka'aroisav
v'chappoisav u'ksoisav u'menakiyosav.
The gemara now is going to bring
a memra from the Amoraim that is going
to describe what exactly all four of
these things were. Now, the Mishnah had
said that there were four snifin. There
were four boards, pillars that were made
of gold says the gemara minani mili.
What's the makor to these four snifin?
It's based on the pasuk that we just
mentioned v'asisa ka'aroisav
v'chappoisav u'ksoisav
The ka'arois were the tfusim. These were
the molds. These were these metal or in
this case gold
molds that were shaped the way the
lechem uponim were shaped that the
lechem uponim were placed in. Now, to be
clear, the lechem uponim were not in the
ka'arois while the lechem uponim were
physically on the shulchan. We'll see,
the lechem uponim on the shulchan were
actually lying on the menakiyosav.
But, when the lechem uponim were taken
out of the oven and when they were in
transit, it was during that period of
time that they had to be on top of these
ka'arois. Kappoisav eilu v'zichin. The
kappois, these were spoons. Spoons that
had in them the b'zichin of lechem. So,
we know that in order for the Kohanim to
eat from the lechem uponim,
there had to be a hakatorah done which
named b'zichin of lechem. The shnei
b'zichin of lechem were to the lechem
uponim like the dam of a korban is to
its basar. The hakatorah was matter.
So, we needed to have b'zichin
physically to have a place to put the
b'zichin of lechem. Ksoisav.
What were the ksoisav? Eilu snifin.
These are the snifin that the Mishnah is
referring to. So, these are these four
big poles that stood to the sides of the
shulchan. And finally, u'menakiyosav
eilu kanim.
What were the menakiyosav? These were
reeds. Rashi said they were actually
half a reeds and they were essentially
the shelves that separated each one of
the lechem uponim. So, the lechem uponim
before it was on the shulchan was inside
the tfus. But, [snorts] once it was on
the shulchan, at that point, it was on
top of the shelf. The shelf are referred
to as the menakiyosav. And the pasuk
says asher yusach bahem. So, that's
referring back to the menakiyosav.
Meaning, what was the purpose of the
menakiyosav? She mesachech bahem es ha
lechem. It was there to act as chach.
Think of your sukkah. It literally
hovered over, it covered the lechem.
Either way,
Rav Ketina said that when it says in the
pasuk v'asisa ka'aroisav v'chappoisav
u'ksoisav u'menakiyosav, it's referring
to what we just mentioned. Ka'aroisav
eilu tfusim. Kappoisav eilu v'zichin.
Ksoisav are the snifin. And the
menakiyosav are the
kanim.
So, the gemara says Rava heard this
ameisah Rava Rava asked a kasha.
that [snorts] the placement of the kanim
on the shulchan and the removal of the
kanim on the shulchan were both avoidas
and as a result they were not doicheh
Shabbos. So, we know that high level
avoidah was doicheh Shabbos. Stating
that the Mishnah said not not always the
case. In fact, the sidur ha kanim and
the netilah of the kanim being that they
doimeh to boinah so, it's assur. So,
these were things that you were not
allowed to do on Shabbos.
That the inyan of these kanim are
mentioned in a pasuk in the Torah.
Am I ain doicheh Shabbos? So, why is it
not doicheh Shabbos? Meaning, bishlama
if the kanim was some chiddush that the
Rabbis came up with, okay, so they don't
have the ability to go and be doicheh
Shabbos. But, if you're telling me that
the pasuk says that this is the tzurah
of the shulchan, so it sounds like this
is a critical thing and if that's the
case, even though putting it on and off
involves
some element of chillul Shabbos, but at
the same time avoidah is something
that's always doicheh Shabbos. Just
explain this a little bit better. The
sidur of the lechem uponim and the
netilah of the lechem uponim took place
on Shabbos. That's when the lechem
uponims were
distributed, that's when the changing of
the guard of the Kohanim and of the
lechem uponim took place. So, really,
the fact that we're not putting the
kanim or removing the kanim on Shabbos
is
>> [snorts]
>> a little interesting because that's when
the lechem uponim are being taken off
and that's when the lechem uponim are
being put on. Aba de Torah says it's
boinah v'saisar and as a result, you
can't do it. Aba mastiv Rava, to the
extent the menakiyosav eilu ha kanim, so
this would seem to be part and parcel of
the tzurah of exactly the way the
shulchan is supposed to be
set up.
If that's the case, there's no way that
this inyan of boinah should be doicheh,
but the gemara says after Rava had this
question, hodar amrei Rava Rava said lav
milsa hu d'amrei. What I said was a
mistaken. This as we know is tikun noach
shel Rava. Very often Rava says
something and then he does a flipperoo.
He says, you know something, I think I
made a mistake. Hodar amrei Rava, this
was one of those examples that tanan. He
said because really it's a a meforesh
Mishnah, the Mishnah that we saw in
yesterday's daf.
Any melacha that you could have done on
erev Shabbos is not doicheh Shabbos.
Meaning, inasmuch as the avoidas in the
Beis Hamikdash would doicheh melacha
Shabbos, but said Rabbi Akiva that to
the extent that you could have done the
melacha before Shabbos, it's not going
to be doicheh Shabbos. It's only if you
couldn't have done the melacha before
Shabbos that it's doicheh Shabbos.
Meaning, it's true that high level
avoidah is doicheh Shabbos, but there
are rules and regulations that you have
to conform with. Specifically, Rabbi
Akiva shalacha k'moisah d'kulam makim
in the day of Shabbos said Rava based on
that, my kasha is not a kasha because
finally now he has relates to these
menakiyosav. Efsher d'lo doicheh
Shabbos. O layav [snorts]
It's not something that I think needs to
be doicheh Shabbos. And the reason is
because ta'ama mai? What was the purpose
of the menakiyosav? So, Rava is a little
bit being doresh ta'ama d'kra over here.
What was the reason for it?
So, that the bread shouldn't spoil.
Because if you're going to take the
breads and you're going to pile one on
top of the other, so then it's going to
spoil. If you have these kanim, these
shelves that are separating them,
then this is not something you have to
worry about. But, b'chi ha shiur lo
y'afish. To the extent that you're going
to go a Shabbos and on that Shabbos
you're not going to have the you're not
going to have the menakiyosav, that
little bit of time is not going to cause
the lechem to go bad and as a result,
this is not something that you have to
worry about. So, Rava said that it's
true b'etzem the menakiyosav should be
doicheh, but it's
technically part of the category of
Rabbi Akiva
If you're going to go through this and
you're going to do it not on Shabbos, so
that's going to be fine. Meaning,
nothing's going to happen if the breads,
the old breads and the new breads
for the amount of time that they're on
the shulchan are going to go through a
Shabbos and not have the menakiyosav. a
result, they would remove the kanim
before Shabbos and they would put it
back after Shabbos. I, the old breads in
the beginning of Shabbos and the new
breads at the end of Shabbos are they
without the shelves? Doesn't bother me.
I, what do you mean the Torah says
menakiyosav, but we're being doresh
ta'ama d'kra. Menakiyosav is my ta'ama
d'layav
lechem. And in such a short period of
time, b'chi ha shiur lo y'afish. And as
a result, I'm not worried about it. The
gemara says k'dei tania, I'll support
what Rava said with a braisa.
What are we supporting? The braisa says
keitzad nichnas me'erev Shabbos? The
kohen would come in erev Shabbos. Where
what does nichnas mean? Into the
heichal. Right? So, he would enter the
heichal in erev Shabbos. V'sham tam.
He would remove the kanim. U'manichan
l'orech shel shulchan. So, where do you
put these kanim? Right? You need a place
to put them. So, the braisa tells you
where to put them. You put them by the
length of the shulchan. Okay, motzei
Shabbos and then noch Shabbos after
Abdullah he would come back in nichnas.
Magbiha rosh shel challah. He would lift
the top of one of the challahs.
U'machnis koneh tachtehah. And he would
put the head of one of the kanim
underneath it.
And then he would lift the top of the
other side of the challah. U'machnis
koneh tachtehah. And he put it
underneath it. The bottom line is he
repeated this 12 times, right? Or in
between, we'll see how many kanim there
them in a second. But, he would it in
all the different places that you had to
put it and like that this was something
that was done not on Shabbos but before
Shabbos and after Shabbos. There's a
little bit of a
rye and micro of the Gamara.
What's the kid that Tanya? What we just
proved from this brice?
We proved that they didn't do the
con in
on Shabbos. The mission said that
forget that was rubber's kasha.
So rubber said it must be even though
it was a passing in the Torah but
because of
Dr.
What was the brice? The brice was that
they didn't do it on Shabbos. We knew
that already from the mission. What
exactly was
in this brice that we didn't know
already from the mission? What is the
Gamara mean when it says
but
in the Gamara seems to be it's because
from the mission you just see that the
con and
weren't Shabbos. Okay so how long were
the
on the
without the con? That you didn't see
from the mission. In the brice you see
my first. The brice is me Shabbos.
You might say Shabbos again. So you see
it's only there for a short period of
time. Which was the premise of rubber's
parents. When rubber explained why is it
it's not because
it's not a brice
but rather it's because of the fact it's
just a small amount of time. For a small
amount of time I'm not worried. But
it was only a small amount of time. In
the mission in the mission you just see
that it wasn't
maybe they came in on Thursday they put
it back up Monday. How do you know it
was a short period of time? For that the
Gamara says Tanya. See right it's only
one that we didn't see in the mission
but it's actually an important edge.
Okay maybe intuitive you probably would
have it from the mission but it's back
saying it in the brice. Here Dr. Brice.
And it's for that reason this is
something that the Gamara felt that it
had to bring. Now the brice continues
and says
always
three
how many kind of them were there?
So you say I don't know there were 12
breads you have to put them in between
the breads do the math right?
12 you would think. But it's not this is
not the math part of the by the way.
Not even [snorts] close. So there were
12 breads right?
>> [snorts]
>> Lined up on two sides which means six
and six on each individual row. Four of
the
required three three. What does mean
three? Each one of the four
required three. So underneath the second
the third the fourth and the fifth. The
four meaning the four middle. So
underneath the second the third the
fourth and the fifth there were three
con each. Four times three is 12. Again
this is not the math.
The sixth one meaning underneath the
sixth one in the
only needed two. The
and the reason is because there was no
heavy load that was going to be put on
top of it. What do you mean? There was
only one row of as opposed to the
[snorts] one needed had two and the one
underneath that had three right? So
being that you're already towards the
top so you don't need such a strong
foundation. So over there two already
was going to be okay.
And
the bottom one
didn't need anything and the reason is
because that was literally on top of the
table. So as far as support it
definitely didn't need any support. But
one other piece we didn't need to
mention. Rubber said earlier that the
reason they had these con was you want a
little bit of space. The reason why a
little bit of space it shouldn't go bad.
So the show con it was made of gold and
because it was made of gold so it always
remained cool. And because it remained
cool there was no issue of it spoiling.
But the bottom line is underneath number
one you needed nothing. Underneath two
three four and five there were three
three
three respectively. Underneath six there
were two which means three times four is
12 plus two is 14 times two is 28. How
many con were there? There were 28 con
either way. Moving along now to the
next part of the year.
The math part of the
year. So if you go back to the mission
now
on Saturday November 11th
so the mission talked about the
dimensions of the show con. And the
mission said the show con or good the
show con was 10
long. The
commission or and it was five
wide.
And the mission went ahead and described
the
dimensions of the
and exactly how the
set
>> [snorts]
>> on the show con.
The sheet is that the show con was 10
long.
Long and it was five long wide. The
mayor and the mayor said
or
the show con was 10
it was 12 long. The
and it was six wide. And they have two
the mission goes I'll leave it to the
mayor and figures out exactly how the
based on its dimensions set on the show
con. So we have a with you the mayor in
the mission. What exactly the dimensions
of the show con were? According to
with you the it's 10 by five. According
to the mayor it's 12 by six. Now the
truth is if you open a in the Torah the
Torah tells you exactly what the
dimensions were. The says very very
clearly that the show con was
the rock boy and by the way I'm over the
master. So
the says what it is. How can we have
the Torah says what it is we're about to
see right now. The side of the
between the mayor and is the size of the
is the made up of six
or is the
six
or is the made up of five?
The holds the made up of five.
So when the says that the show con is
or good so it's two times five which is
10. When it says
it's one times five which is five. The
mayor holds the made up of six.
So when the says that the show con is
or good it's two times six and when it
says
it's one times six hence it's not going
to be 10 and five it's really going to
be 12 and six. Stating that as we're
about to see now this is a little bit of
a
as we're about to see right now.
Everybody agreed the side of the mayor
and the side of you the
agreed that there were
that were made up of five
and there were that were made up of six.
In other words not all were created
equally. There [snorts] was the larger
and there was the smaller. As a matter
of fact in tomorrow's we're going to see
there was even a third size of an so not
two three. But for today's
we don't have to be that confused.
Two is enough to juggle. So there was
the
of five the
six and in fact there's no
about that. The
mayor and
is what
is the of the con? So when we say it's
or good is it the of five
plus it's going to be 10 long that sheet
is
or is it the of six that's it's going to
be
12 tall sheet is and the same is going
to be as relates to the width. So
everybody agrees there's an five six.
The
is what is the of the show con? But to
be clear according to
the show con is bigger than it is
according to
there's no what a is a is a is a
so if we have a now are we working with
the bigger or the smaller? So
the mayor is working with the bigger has
a bigger show con. And
that's working with the smaller has a
smaller show con. It sounds obvious that
last sentence. But when you go through
the Gamara it's actually not as obvious
as it sounds. But that is the way it is.
So again
not all were created equally. Everybody
agrees with that. The
that we have in our mission is regarding
the show con. Now is it only regarding
the show con? This is the only place in
that the mayor and argued? Doesn't feel
right. It's not. Really this is where
this next part of the Gamara picks up.
Awesome.
We learned in a mission over there.
Where is there? Besides
per Zion mission good. Additionally you
may be more familiar with it from
I'm just looking at the
regardless. So we learned in a mission
over there the mayor and the mayor said
all
all the that were in the base
they know near us.
They were all almost being near us
with meaning that were made up of six
with the exception of the
which was an by an right? The
is the other
the way way way smaller
the one that was in the also known as
the
so that
was one and that was not the being near
us which is the that's made up of six
that was made up of five. Additionally
the
the corn of the horn I should say of the
so the
had these four horns in the four corners
right? The
so those corners were also an which says
the mayor it's the smaller that's made
up of five.
The
was also made up of a smaller
and made up of a smaller. This says a
mass being in the being in itself the
structure of the mission
was made up
those are six which are
as it relates to the
commission is made up of five. So
according to the mayor when was the six
used and what was the commission used?
It's very nuanced. Call you the mission
being near us with the exception of the
the corn of the
the
and the of the
according to
it's much simpler. The being in is
always six. And the of the are always
five. I'm
the mayor
and the mayor and you the both came to
their position from the same exact a
rather cryptic in
>> [snorts]
>> in the
you
it's
men
you just going to read the entire
the
is the of
the
of
I'm over the
the
of the
>> I think that's a pretty hard possible to
touch. But either way, says the Gamorah,
maybe both looked at this very very very
vague possible and from there they
formulated their positions. How so? Says
the Gamorah.
When the possible mentions the
they saw it, it's referring to the Well,
let's actually take it back a little
bit. When it says
but
I'm always I'm over
so the way remain touching the possible
is is that the of the
right the
were made up of
right the always uses that's the
measurement that's the proverbial foot
or yard that we would use today. But
that
is a bigger
that is
it's the equivalent of an
and a
club
smaller
the smaller would be
the large one is she
how much more does it have a
so what the possible thing is is the
but the that are being used for the
each
is really an of the
stating that the
of the as relates to the
that of the
that is already the smaller very hard
possible to read but
that
is also referring to the smaller
that's also measured based on the
smaller that's also measured based on
the smaller
that's also measured based on the
smaller that's also the smaller so the
possible thing is when it comes to the
it's the larger what does it mean larger
it's the equivalent of an and a
however then we list out these four
things the of the as the
the
these are all made up of the small what
are these things made so says the price
as relates to the
that was referring to the the
was an
I'm
the was referring to the
the
that was referring to the
and they got
the
so essentially what the possible thing
is just based on these words that these
four things were made up of the smaller
okay enters the here's the so
holds these
four things that the
said were made up of the smaller
the
those are the ones who made up of the so
but all the other of the
was made up of
the so
cuz you call similar
similar to this all the are supposed to
be but the bottom line is we have these
four things that were supposed to be the
the question is it only these four
things that sounds very reasonable
that's the
looked at these four things and he said
I think there's like a
I think they all fall into the category
of
right and [snorts] as
so it's all I mean that it's all
so for that reason I hold that this is a
really on all the all the
this is the rest OF THE STORY
THE was
she show or
the
five six
is
now we know the story the mission in the
17th paragraph of
you see over here that according to
and
they hold their respective by all the in
fact the only time holds that there was
anything that was
was only the those few things that are
mentioned in that cryptic possible in
the school
either way so we just mentioned the
possible in the
why because it's really the
back story to understanding the
in our
now we mentioned the possible so we're
going to do what we do which is we're
going to try to understand this possible
a little bit better
now what did the possible say the
possible said that the
which we said is the
and
and the
which we said is the
and the also
the
which is the
and
also the
the
were all made up of an
now when we say that the an
when we say the
was made up of an
that's pretty straight forward the
possible says
you know exactly that it's made up of an
so
what exactly does it mean when we say
that the
was an
the was an
and the
were an
what's the so
so you would say I don't know the height
probably right the height of the
is an
sounds like it and it's an
or even if it's more than an it's made
up of
right the is an
and the
is an so
right that's
what it sounds like but the truth is
there's another option the other option
is is that we'll see soon that the was
an wide
right the was the border that went
around the
and the width of the
was an so
the
also was the platform that the was able
to stand in towards the middle of the
was also an
and there was one of width between the
edge of the top of the
and the
so if that's the case there's really
another possibility of what we might be
referring to when we say the
and the
so
which are the
the
and the respectively were an
could be we don't mean the height but it
could be we mean the width we mean that
indentation it could be that which we
know is an from
so it could be that is the
and the truth is that really from here
until seven lines from the top of the
and the the
of the is going to be very mathematical
but the is going to be trying to figure
out push it the
of what we mean when we say that these
things were an again as relates to the
fourth thing mentioned which is the the
that's very straight forward but in
terms of the first three all parts of
the of the of the these components what
exactly we're referring to when we
describe the and then say that the was
that's something that's a little bit
unclear as a matter of fact the Gamorah
is going to take four cracks at it the
first three the Gamorah is going to
deflect and it's only on the fourth try
that the Gamorah is going to say
the Gamorah
is going to be very satisfied with the
way that it's going to come out
now as relates to a little bit of an
introduction without this introduction
this next I'm in Gamorah is almost
impossible and that is we just have to
reacquaint ourselves a little bit with
the physical of the
again something that came up in many
many in
this
even in the a little bit but we have to
reacquaint ourselves a little bit and
that is the
again we're talking about the
of
the of the
the the
the
that's in the the big massive
that was 10 tall
it was 10 tall
the way the 10 were subdivided is the
lowest so
was the so
afterwards there was another five
of
so
at the top of the five is where the was
that border where the
went and he did some of his which means
that if you're measuring from the floor
until the this is a very important
number that we need to know for this
stuff it was six right so the
60% up the so so
from the
until the top of the
was three
three
which means that from the floor until
the top of the is nine and then you had
the
so which was just an on each corner was
another hence from the floor all the way
to the top of the
where you end up with is 10 additionally
>> [snorts]
>> there was a
that went around the midpoint of the
which means it was literally at the 50
yard line so you count five from the
floor that's where the
was not to be confused with the
which is counting six from the floor so
again we have the first is the then you
have five of the which gets you to the
and you have three of the which gets you
to the top and there's another of
and then you have the
that goes through the middle the
critical points that we need to remember
is that the
is
six from the
floor and the
assuming it's in the middle right so
that would put you at five from the
floor right again this is very high
level we're going to go into the weeds
momentarily but this is just the basic
conceptual way that we were taught this
the next thing that we have to
reacquaint ourselves with is the length
and the width of the
so so the good news is that the was a
perfect square so because it was a
perfect square the length and the width
are one and the same now this has
nothing to do with the ramp the ramp is
its own we're talking about the physical
part of the so
ramp not withstanding so the itself was
a perfect square what were the
dimensions it was 32
by 32 stating that it was only 32 Amos
by 32 Amos on the ground floor.
However, [snorts]
the Yesod itself
was one Amos wide
all around. And because it was one Amos
wide all around, that means that really
it was only that first Amos that was 32
by 32. But [snorts] the structure that
was on top of that, and it's really the
next five Amos going all the way up to
the Sovev, wasn't 32 by 32, but it was
indented one Amos on each side, which
means you take one Amos from here and
one Amos from here, so it's 32 minus one
minus another one, it's 30. You do the
same thing on the other side. So it was
30 by 30. The Sovev also had a width,
and the width was also one Amos, which
means that the area above the Sovev, the
area
from the
Sovev up until the top of the Mizbeach,
right before
where the Maroach where everything was,
was
one Amos on each side less than
30, which means it was 30 minus one
minus one or 28, and it's that way on
each side, which means that it's going
to be 28 by 28. And the same was true as
it relates to the Kronos, as we'll see a
little bit more in detail on the Hashmon
of the Gemara. But the bottom line is is
that as it relates to the physical
Tzurah of the Mizbeach, the Mizbeach on
the bottom is 32 by 32, and then on top
of that there's a block of 30 by 30, and
on top of that there's another block of
20 by 20. By the way, if you want to
just visualize a little bit better how
they built the Mizbeach, the way they
built the Mizbeach was they really made
it up of three parts. So they took this
huge block that was 32 by 32 for all the
builders out there, and it was one Amos
tall, and they put that on the ground.
And then they took another block that
was 30 by
30 that was five Amos tall, and they
placed it on top of that. And then they
took a third block that was 28 Amos by
28 Amos that was three Amos tall, they
put on top of that. And then they built
the Kronos,
and [snorts]
the rest is history. Either way, with
this
sort of simple introduction,
we jump into the Hashbonos of the
Gemara. So again, we have a Posuk in
Yechezkel, a Posuk in Yechezkel that
says that the Cheiko Amos, which is the
Yesod, and the Amos Roichev, which is
the Sovev, and the Gevul Al Sfas Sovev
Zeraso Achas, which are the Kronos, that
were all Amos. And we're trying to
figure out now what's the Avodah. We
can't lose focus of what the primary
Avodah is. What aspect of this was
exactly an Amos, and as we'll see now
there's a lot of different
possibilities. Look at the Gemara.
Kasolkes Daichach. The Gemara's Muskol
Rishon in terms of how to approach this
is that what do we mean when we say that
these things were an Amos? What it means
is Me'Yesod Va'Ad Sovev
Ba'Amos Basar. And again, when we say an
Amos, we know it's an Amos. An Amos
Basar Chameishes Tefachim. So the Gemara
says Kasolkes Daichach. The Havaminah in
the Gemara is is that from the Yesod
until the Sovev was Amos Basar
Chameishes Tefachim Begovah. So what
does it mean Yesod and Sovev? It means
from the Yesod all the way to the Sovev.
Not the Yesod was an Amos in the
Kasolkes Basar Chameishes Tefachim, and
the Sovev was an Amos Basar Chameishes
Tefachim. But from the Yesod all the way
up to the Sovev.
Okay. U'Mai Cheiko Amos Va'Amos Roichev.
So what does the Posuk mean when it says
Cheiko Amos and Amos Roichev? Doesn't it
mean
certainly sounds like the Cheiko Amos A
and the Amos Roichev B. These two
individual things were each an Amos
Basar Chameishes Tefachim. No. Hachi
K'Amos, this is what it means. Me'Cheiko
Amos Va'Ad Roichev Ba'Amos Basar
Chameishes means that entire area, which
means the
entire first six Amos of the Mizbeach
was Ba'Amos Basar Chameishes Tefachim.
That's the Kasolkes Daichach. Well if
that's the case, let's do a little bit
of Hashbonos. K'Amos Ba'Amos K'Amos
Havah. What's the height of the
Mizbeach? As we said Amos like we just
said. Shesh. [snorts] You're telling me
now that the first six, Kasolkes the top
of the Sovev means the first six. Benei
Chameisha Chameisha is each Amos, right?
That's the Chameisha Chameisha. Each one
of those six Amos respectively are made
up of five Tefachim. Va'Arba, and then
the top four, we don't have this, is
Benei
Shisha Shisha are each made up of six,
right? That's what you're suggesting
right now. Well if that's the case,
Mizbeach K'Amos Havah. What would be the
height of the Mizbeach? Chamshin
Va'Arba. It would be 54 Tefachim. Why 54
Tefachim? Because it's it's 10 Amos. Six
of the Amos are made up of five, so six
times five is 30, and then four of the
Amos are made up of six, four times six
is 24. So it means the total amount of
Tefachim is going to be 54 Tefachim.
Palges Mizbeach K'Amos Havah. Where's
the midpoint of the Mizbeach? Why do we
care about that? So we want to know
where the Chutzos Sikra is. So what's
the midpoint of the Mizbeach? Esrim
Ve'Shiva. It's 27. Now Me'Kronos Va'Ad
Sovev K'Amos Havah. If you go from the
Kronos
and you back down until the Sovev, how
many Tefachim is it going to be? Esrim
Va'Arba. It's going to be 24. Why?
Because really from the Kronos until the
Sovev, those are the upper four Amos cuz
we said the Sovev is at the six Amos
point. Those are the upper four Amos.
Those are each Bas Shisha. So that means
four times six is 24. So 54 minus 20 is
30, right? Okay. K'Amos Botzel Palges
Mizbeach. What's the distance now from
the Sovev to the Chutzos Sikra? Kosa.
Comes out it's three Tefachim, right?
It's back of the envelope arithmetic.
The Sovev is at the 30 Tefach mark, and
the Chutzos Sikra is at the 27 Tefach
mark. Right. The Gemara have a problem.
Kas Tnan. Right. But Tnan, not problems
not yet. But Tnan we don't get into the
Mishnah. Chutzos Sikra Higher Ba'Emtza
Kedei Lehavdil Bein Dom Elyon U'Dom
Tachton. Right? What was the Chutzos
Sikra? Chutzos Sikra was in the middle
to be Mavdil between the Dom Elyon and
the Dom Tachton. Okay, so what's wrong
with all this? What's Ma Ma Bayah? So
what's the problem? The Sovev is 30
Tefachim from the bottom, and the
Chutzos Sikra is 27 Tefachim from the
bottom, and there's three Tefachim of
distance between the Sovev and the
Chutzos Sikra. So what's going on right?
So far it sounds okay, it's right. Nice
observation. I'll tell you what the
problem is. Kas Olos Ha'Tamid went into
the Mishnah. Gabei Olos
Ha'Tamid regarding the Olos
Ha'Tamid.
>> [snorts]
>> Haya The Olos Ha'Tamid is the easiest
part of this Amos. Haya Eved Ha'Kevesh.
If you've ever learned to Sugya Olos
Ha'Tamid, you get the joke. Haya Eved
Ha'Kevesh. Somebody was going up the
Kohen and he had to go up the ramp.
U'Fana Le'Sovev. Anyone on top of the
Sovev U'Volei Ha'Kevesh Mizrachis. And
he came to the corner of Darom Mizrach.
U'Malak Es Rosho. And he did Melikah on
the head of the Olos Ha'Tamid Arpa, the
way Melikah was done. U'Mavdil. And he
was Mavdil. Right. But Olos Ha'Tamid
yeah, but Chutzos no. U'Ma It says Dom.
And then he did Me'itzui, which was
unique to the Olos Ha'Tamid. Here's the
punchline. Here's the punchline. This is
the only thing we need for. We don't
need the Me'itzui. We don't need the
fact that it was Darom Mizrach.
Right. We don't need the Brisker Rov in
Sefer. All we need is this next slide.
Ve'Im Asah Le'Matan Raglav. Let's say
the Kohen who's on the Sovev and he's
doing the Avodah of the Olos Ha'Tamid,
right? And he goes and he does a
Le'Matan Raglav. He decides to bend down
and he wants to do it beneath his feet,
somewhere lower than him. Afilu Amos
Achas. Even if he goes down a full Amos,
Kasher it's going to be Kosher. Wait.
The Gemara Kasher. How could it be
Kosher? Hacha Yovel Yovel Le'Matan Shnei
Tefachim. It shouldn't be okay. If
you're going to go down a
Amos, that means you're going into
Le'Matan Chutzos Sikra. And we know you
weren't allowed to put the Olos Ha'Tamid
Le'Matan Chutzos Sikra. And if that's
the case, it should be a problem. If
there's only three Tefachim between the
Sovev and the Chutzos Sikra, how could
you understand the Mishnah in Zevachim
that the Mishnah says that if the Kohen
who's standing on the Sovev doing the
Avodah of the Olos Ha'Tamid decided to
do the Me'itzui
a full Amos beneath where he's standing,
it's going to be okay? A full Amos
beneath puts you into Le'Matan Chutzos
Sikra, and the Olos Ha'Tamid Le'Matan
Chutzos Sikra is Posul.
Now if it would have said, right, just
to be Machrish a little bit better, you
could go a half a Amos. Oh, that's Kavod
because there's a half a Amos of space
between where the Kohen is standing on
the Sovev and the Chutzos Sikra. But
it's not what it says. [snorts]
It doesn't say a half a Amos. It says a
full Amos. And to the extent that it
says a full Amos, the Cherev full Amos
is not something that could be okay. In
other words, it's Muchach. Here's the
point. From this Mishnah in Zevachim
that there had to be a full Amos. There
had to be a full Amos between the Sovev
and the Chutzos Sikra. And based on the
way we just tried explaining
the Posuk in Yechezkel, it emerges
there's only three Tefachim between. And
if that's the case, back to the drawing
board. That cannot be the Pshat. Ela,
says the Gemara, let's take another stab
at this. Cheiko Amos. Maybe when we say
Cheiko Amos was an Amos Basar Chameishes
Tefachim, what it means is Knisa. It
means the Roichev of the Cheiko Amos.
Cheiko Amos again was the Yesod. It
means the width of the Yesod, that
indentation.
How much it was wider than what was on
top of it. And when we say Amos Roichev,
it means
Knisa. It means that the indentation,
the width of the Sovev was an Amos. And
when we say Gevul Al Sfas Sovev, what it
means again, Knisa. It's referring to
the indentation between the edge of the
Mizbeach and where the Kronos marked.
But the Gemara says, let's see if this
is going to
prove out. Mizbeach K'Amos Havah. Wait.
How big was the Mizbeach?
Shishin. It
It was 60 Amos. Palges Mizbeach K'Amos
Havah. What's the midpoint of the
Mizbeach? Talsin. It's 30. So where's
the Chutzos Sikra now? Again,
at the 30 Amos point. Me'Kronos Va'Ad
Sovev K'Amos Havah. From the Kronos
until the Sovev,
how many Tefachim are there? Chof Daled.
Right. It's 24 Tefachim. Why is it 24
Tefachim? Because again, the Sovev is at
the six Amos point, and you have four
Amos on top. At this point, right, this
is and the wording of the Gemara, the
way the Gemara says it is a little bit
Tzerikha Daichach, so it's a little bit
tricky. It makes it a drive trickier.
But how much space is there from the top
of the Mizbeach down to the Sovev?
There's four Amos. Each Amos Bas Shisha
t'fachim.
Could it be it's about chamishah
t'fachim? No, cuz in this cheshbon, all
of the bas chamishah t'fachim's are in
the rochav, which means that all of the
amos in the goyva are bas shishah
t'fachim. Okay, so from the top of the
mizbe'ach down to the sovev, how much
space do you have? You have 24. Kamah
botel apalgadam is bayach? How much
space then is there from the sovev until
the midway point of the mizbe'ach?
Shishah, there's six t'fachim. Over
trans, so so far this is amazing. In the
masol hamakom drag the fill amoh achas
k'sheyro. That's going to be very, very
good, right? So, at first glance, says
the Gemara, if you go ahead and you say
that the amoh bas chamishah t'fachim is
not talking about the height of the
chelach, all 10 of the amos
were bas shishah t'fachim. So, it's 60
t'fachim tall, which means that the
chutas sikra is at the 30
t'fach point, which means the sovev is
at the 36 t'fach point, which means
there's a perfect amoh in between.
That's the way it's supposed to be. OH,
GOOD. WELL, makes sense. Pasul with the
mishnah of mizbe'ach. Which by the way,
if you ask the someone who knows these
zachan a little bit, right, what's
p'shat in that mishnah over there in
z'vachim that says if he did as l'mata,
amoh, it's going to be okay. We'd say
it's pasul because we know the chutas
sikra is at the midway point, and the
sovev is at the 60% point, and it's 10
t'fachim. So, what's the difference? The
difference is an amoh. So, you're
allowed to go all the way to the chutas
sikra. So, if you go l'mata, it's going
to be okay. The Gemara was fardraying,
maybe it's amoh bas chamishah t'fachim,
which threw us for a little bit of a
loop. But the bottom line is is that if
we go back and we say then no, really,
all 10 of the amos of the height were
bas shishah t'fachim, so this is going
to work out perfectly. Stating that, but
we do have amoh bas chamishah t'fachim.
Where do we have that? We have that
regarding all the indentations, as the
Gemara said, b'may ikim tov k'nisa. So,
you tell me, where are the amoh bas
chamishah t'fachim? Meaning what are
those uh
things that the Navi Yechezkel said was
not the amoh of a tefach, but it was the
amoh bas chamishah t'fachim. It's all an
indentation. Indentation, these are
indentations of the sovev and the
indentation of the kronos. Over there we
have masos mukmasos k'nisa. So, could
you say it's referring to the case of
T'naim? We learned in the mishnah, this
mishnah is in meseches middos, perek um
mishnah alef. A little less obscure than
meseches uh keilim, perek zayin. But the
bottom line is, it's the mishnah in
meseches middos. Mizbe'ach ish ish
mishnah shishah
t'fachim.
The dimensions of the physical mizbe'ach
was 32 amos by 32 amos.
Oleh amoh, it went up an amoh. The
k'neis amoh, and then it indented an
amoh. Zeh hu y'sod, and that lower amoh
was the y'sod. Nintza
shlosha amos shlosha amos. And then
emerges out of the mishnah that the area
on top of the y'sod, that next block,
which by the way, we mentioned already,
goes five amos high, so that next block
was 30 by 30. Fait the Gemara, kashah.
It's not 30 by 30. Shlosha amos v'shnei
t'fachim haveu. It's really
amos and two t'fachim. What's the
cheshbon?
Because if that indentation is really
only five t'fachim,
so you started off with 32
amos, right? You started off with 32
amos. Now, you indented how much? You
were nichnas how much? We assumed an
amoh on this side and an amoh on that
side. Okay, so you took shh an amoh from
here, you took an amoh from there. So,
what are you left with? You're left with
30 amos. But now you're telling me no,
that amoh is amoh bas chamishah
t'fachim. So, that amoh is amoh bas
chamishah t'fachim, you actually didn't
take a a full amoh. All you took was
five t'fachim. So, what you're left with
is the 30 amos in the middle plus a
tefach over here and a tefach over
there, which means it's 30 amos and two
t'fachim. You did the same thing on the
other side. So, it's 30 amos and two
t'fachim by 30 amos and two t'fachim.
And by the way, if your classic amoh
is six t'fachim, so it's 30 and a third
by 30 and a third. So, fait the Gemara,
kashah. If the nichnas amoh is the amoh
bas chamishah t'fachim,
well, then
really, from a a tefach perspective, or
relative to an amoh bas shishah
t'fachim, which is what the entire
mizbe'ach is. So, based on that, what
you're going to end up with is not 30 by
30 after you shave off the amoh on each
side, but rather what you're going to be
left with is 30 and two thirds by 30 and
two thirds.
It's not what the mishnah says. V'susu
ach the Gemara, let's continue climbing
the ladder. Oleh chamish
The mizbe'ach went up another five amos.
V'k'neis amoh, and then again, there was
another indentation of an amoh. And that
was sovev, that was the sovev. Now, you
think that the sovev went in another
amoh. Nintza esrim v'shmonah, al esrim
v'shmonah. So, comes out that that block
was 28 by 28. But, says the Gemara,
is that true? Esrim v'shmonah v'arba
t'fachim haveu. It's not 28 by 28. At
this point, it's 28 and four t'fachim by
28 and four t'fachim. Because again,
when you get to the sovev, we're saying
that's the amoh rochav, that's the amoh
bas chamishah t'fachim. SO, YOU'RE NOT
GOING in six t'fachim, you're going in
five t'fachim. So, if you're going in
only five [clears throat] t'fachim, so
you had the five t'fachim that you went
in on the bottom, the five t'fachim went
in on the top, right? Easiest way to do
this is is you went in almost an amoh
minus
a tefach here and a tefach there, a
tefach here and a tefach there. So, what
you have is minus two amos plus these
four t'fachim. What you're left with
really is 28 and four t'fachim by 28 and
four t'fachim. It's not 28 by 28. Says
the Gemara, I hear, maybe there's an
eitzah. I don't know. I don't know if I
would checkmate our understanding of the
pasuk based on this mishnah. Cuz
v'chiteim I could always tell you,
k'vido lehavai amoh. Being that it's not
a complete You know, what's your kashah?
The mishnah said 30, it's 30 and a
third. The mishnah said 28, it's 28 and
two thirds. No, no, a fraction here and
a fraction there, right? K'vido lehavai
amoh, it's not a full amoh. So,
lechashvei. So, therefore, we don't
count it. But the Gemara says, I'll tell
you why it's a problem, cuz makom
kronos. Because the mishnah goes a
little bit higher and says the makom of
the kronos, that area, was also indented
an amoh.
And if that's the case, what was the
area of the makom kronos? It was, right,
do the math, it's going to be 26 by 26.
Meaning from the makom kronos around.
The kronos itself is only an amoh. But
if you go around, it's 26 by 26, the
makom kronos. Right, amoh mizeh, amoh
mizeh. Nintza esrim v'shishah, al esrim
v'shishah. Fait the Gemara, that doesn't
work. Esrim v'sheva haveu. At that
point, it's already 27. You know why?
Cuz you just added another two t'fachim
that you're not really subtracting. So,
when you added two plus two plus two,
you ended up with a full amoh. And
instead of the number being 26, the
number's going to be 27. If you want to
do this a little bit differently,
>> [snorts]
>> the
assumption is 32 amos times six, which
is 192 t'fachim. The mishnah says, you
cut off an amoh by the y'sod, an amoh by
the sovev, and amoh by the kronos. So,
we're saying each one of those amos is
really amoh bas chamishah t'fachim,
that's what the pasuk Yechezkel means.
Okay, so how many amos did you really
cut off?
You cut off 15 on this side and 15 on
that side. You cut off 30 in total.
Which means how many t'fachim do you
have now, right? Cuz again, you took off
six amos, three on this side, three on
that side, and three on this side, three
on that side, but erech and rochav. So,
you took off
from the
length, right? Let's just take one side,
it's the same on the width. The length,
you took off 30, cuz it's six times
five, not six times six, six times five
is 30. So, you started off 32 times six,
so how many t'fachim was the mizbe'ach?
It was 192 t'fachim. You removed 30, six
times five, so you're left with 162
t'fachim. What's 162
divided by six? It's exactly 27. And
what does the mishnah say? It was 26.
So, you want to tell me that 30 is
really 30 and a third, I can live with
that. You want to tell me 28 is really
28 and two thirds, I can live with that,
cuz it's takah only off by a fraction.
But by the time you get to the kronos,
because of the cumulative effect of all
those t'fachim, right? And if you do
math sometimes and you leave out the odd
numbers,
if you have enough numbers in your
equation, all those odd numbers add up
to an even number sometimes. So, right,
it could be something real. That's
exactly what happened over here. So, you
didn't care about this
uh you know, decimal, and you didn't
care about that fraction, but now all of
a sudden, what do you mean? I'm off by a
chunk of change. Case of menulah. All of
a sudden, you have kindness. So, that's
what happened over here. So, you went
from having 26, the number's really 27.
It can't be off by 27. That's like a
real number. Can't be off by so much.
But the Gemara says, I don't know if it
bothers me so much. You know why? Ready
for this? Loy dock. No, no, I HEAR.
LOY DOCK. I HEAR A NEW ACCOUNTANT. But
loy dock, you want to know what the
number is? The number is 27. I I said
26.
>> [snorts]
>> But uh it's it's really loy dock. But
the Gemara says,
I have a little bit of a problem with
that. You know why? Because makom hiluch
raglei hakohanim. There was another
indentation that was done on the other
side of the kronos. And that was the
area that the kohanim had to walk. So,
remember, when you visualize the top of
the mizbe'ach, what do you see? You see
fire. That's what you see. You see the
marocho. Ein marocho, tzei marocho, drei
marocho, feer marocho. Right, machlik
stam nom depending on the the day of the
week, Yom Kippur. There's a lot of
marochos going on in the mizbe'ach. So,
there's a lot of fire. Now, the kohanim
can't walk in the fire, right? So,
obviously, there had to be like a path
that went around, and that's what the
kohanim were able to walk. So, there was
this makom
hiluch raglei hakohanim, which was amoh
mizeh and amoh mizeh. And the mishnah
goes weiter, and the mishnah says,
nintza esrim v'al ba
al esrim v'arba, makom hamarocho, right?
Makom hamarocho. So, comes out that the
makom hamarocho was 24 by 24. Right,
what's the cheshbon? Because we're
assuming now that the the kronos is
by
it's 26 by 26. And now, the kronos
itself is uh amoh. And now there's a
lane that's another amoh. So, comes out
it's 26 minus one minus one, you're left
with 24. So, what's the marocho? The
marocho is 24. Fait the Gemara, kashah.
Esrim v'chamishah haveu. It's really 25.
Why is it 25? Because the starting point
we said is not 26, 27. So it's 27 minus
the amos of the cronus, which is 26,
minus the amos of the mokem
which is 21.
That's what's
it's the same like duck. If
26 could really be 27, so 24 could
really be 25. But the maracha says no,
this can't work.
In
the same perek, it [laughter] has perek
mem gimel. It says over there
that real was the maracha, the fire.
Shame
al arbas
re of. So we describe the
maracha and we say that the maracha was
12 by 12.
And it was revua al arbas revov.
You would think that it was 12 by 12.
No,
revov.
You did
that. You would stand Somebody was
standing in the middle and he went this
way it was 12, that way it was 12, this
way it was 12, that way it was 12.
That's what this possuk means when it
says shame
It means it was 24 by 24. Here's the
problem. The possuk says it was 24 by
24. So if the possuk says it was 24 by
24, then we're off with our math. You
know, you can tell me that when the
mission says 24 really means 25. But if
the possuk says 24 can't really mean 25.
So if that's the case, we have a
mefurash possuk that it says it was 24
and based on all our bonus that each one
of these indentations is not a proper
ama, but rather it's really five There's
no way to make this work. Again, if that
indentation is an ama, it works. You
start off with 32 by 32 on the bottom,
then by the
you go and you an ama
You're 30 by 30. By the
another ama. So now you're 28 by 28. By
the cronus you another ama. Now you're
26 by 26. The cronus itself are an ama.
The mokem
You're left with 24 by 24. Call you over
HERE BY SHALOM. THAT IS HOW YOU
reconcile the mission. It's
in the possuk in
Everything works out beautifully. If
however, every one of these indentations
on the bottom are five
So then really the misbeach starts 32 by
32. When you indented an ama, you're
only going five
which means that the next part of
misbeach is not 30 by 30. It's 30 and a
third by 30 and a third, which means the
next part is not 28 by 28, but it's 28
and 2 thirds by 28 and 2 thirds, which
means that the next part is not 26 by
26. It's really 27
by 27 minus the cronus. That's a regular
That's a regular regular ama, right? We
exhausted our three
amos
That's a regular ama, that's 26. And the
mokem
is 25.
Possuk says 24. Possuk doesn't say 25.
As a result, this is not something that
can work. So really we had two cracks at
it to try to make sense of this. Both of
them failed. So the now
is going to try a third.
Maybe the maracha is this. Maybe the
maracha is
made
something that on some level we've all
been thinking a little bit
subconsciously.
>> [snorts]
>> And that is that being that there's
something called an ama
and there's an ama ama ama.
Maybe when we say that the misbeach
itself was 32 amos, it was made up of
amos
and amos
Maybe the misbeach 32 amos and not all
the same amos. You tell me not all amos
were created equally. You tell me
sometimes an ama means this, sometimes
an ama means that. Maybe the 32 amos is
made up of a
It's made up of an ama
Specifically, maybe the six of the 32
are amos amos.
Amos.
And the rest of them are going to be
amos amos. Now, what do you accomplish
by doing that? So what you accomplish by
doing that is is that we're going to say
that
the amos
that
got indented the amos
The amos that got indented with a
Again, the amos amos
Got it right the first time. Were the
amos that were indented, not the amos of
the height. The amos of the height is
all amos
That's the
is by the 30 point and the is by the 36
point and it's a perfect ama. That's the
mission.
That whole first moves we can leave it
as is. That's going to be perfect. As it
relates to where the ama
ama is, it's regarding the
It's talking about the indentation of
the and the and the cronus respectively.
And really we're indenting it not six
We're indenting it five. Five.
What was the issue with doing that?
Issue with doing that is that when we
got to the top, we ran into an issue.
Because when we got to the top, what we
realized was is that we were off. We
ended up with a maracha of 20
five
when by 25 when really it's based on the
possuk, it was supposed to have been 26
by 26. So
if 24 by 24. So
if you're going to tell me
that it could be not all the amos were
created equally and some of the amos
and some of the amos
Well, then you're not going to have an
issue. I'll tell you six of the amos
were made up of 50. If five. If six of
the amos
were made up of five, well, that means
that when we in
dented the six amos, we were just
When we indented the six amos and we
indented them five
Essentially, what you're doing is you
were just knocking out. Right? You were
just knocking out those amos that were
But here's the point. When you look at
the misbeach now from the standpoint of
five
and you assume that the amos is really
six because that's usually what it is,
the misbeach is not 32 amos. The
misbeach is really 31 amos. The only
reason [laughter] we took the liberty to
describe it as being 32 amos is because
six of the amos that we were using six
of the amos that we were using were amos
amos
as opposed to amos
amos.
So we cheated a little bit. Because six
of the amos we used smaller amos. As a
result, we ended up getting one extra
ama. Right? If we use it for six and the
difference between the amos amos
amos
That's how much we ended up cheating,
right? That's how much we ended up
saving. But the bottom line is is that
You want to know what the size of the
misbeach was? The size of the misbeach
was never 32. The size of the misbeach
was really 31. I It said 32. It's true
it said 32. Because we were cheating. We
were
six of them
amos
So really all the is doing The simplest
way to explain
All the is doing is the is saying that
six of the 32 amos
which means that if you assume that amos
really six and you convert it into amos,
what you're going to end up with is how
many amos? You're going to end up with
31 amos, not with 32 amos. What's the
What are you by doing this?
What you by doing this is is that if you
start the
with 31 by 31 and now
you shave off two, right? For the
you side, so now it's going to be 29 by
29. And now you don't have to five
because I forget the five is an ama,
right? We just shave the six that we're
shaving
the six amos that are amos. So you start
off 31 by 31 and then you have 29 by 29
and then you have 27 by 20
seven, right? Then you're going to have
27 by 27
and then at that point, if you make a of
how many amos you're going to have left.
This gets a little bit tricky. If you do
it because if you go by two, you minus
one and minus one, you're going to be
left with 25 again. But now you have to
convert. Now you have to go back to the
amos
not the amos. Right? So if you look at
it this way, you basically have now how
many amos left? You have now
the 26 amos, each one being six amos.
26 times six What you're left with is
is really going to be 26 amos. If it's
going to be 26 amos, you're going to
shave one, you're going to shave one,
you're going to end up with 24. Here's
the bottom line. If you put it on paper,
it's going to work. If you go ahead and
you start off 31 minus two, minus two,
minus two, you're going to end up with
now
your 27.
But at the same time when you convert
into amos amos amos
Should we do this a little bit slower?
Again, if you take the misbeach, the
full 30 amos of the misbeach The You
take the 32 amos of the misbeach and you
say six of those amos of the 32 amos are
made up of amos
So how many is that? So that's six times
five, that's 30. And then you take the
other 26 and you say they're made up of
six
So it's 26 times six which is which is
156. So how many
How many is the misbeach? It's 186.
Right? It's 186.
If you indented two for the
you side and another two for the
and another two for the cronus
Right? Two amos, two amos, two amos on
each side. And those amos
amos amos.
That's the possuk in
So how many did you just knock out? You
knocked out 30.
You started with 186. You knocked out
30, you're left with 156. That's how
many you have right now. 156 and you're
done with the amos
156 divided by six is 26. So minus the
armor for the Karen and minus the armor
for the
what you're left with is 24 so it's a
little counterintuitive because you
think what do I understand I started
with 31 minus 2 minus 2 minus 2 so plays
a little bit of a mind game with you but
again if you convert it into you're
going to see it's perfect you're
starting with 186 you minus 30 the 6
hours
and you're left with 156 / 6 is 26 minus
a regular
minus a regular
what you're left with is 156
we'll do a little bit of an edit and the
bottom line is once you do that I call
you over and we'll come in and works so
I think I have it I think I GOT IT YOU
WANT TO KNOW WHERE THESE three hours
it's not in the height cuz that's going
to mess us up with the
it's not in terms of
just flat-out what the indentation was
cuz that's going to get us into trouble
with the
that says the
24 based on this it's 25 what is it it's
the of the indentation but with a great
and the one we say that the was 32 hours
it wasn't all of the same hours of the
32 hours six of them were
and 26 of them 26 of them were
she should but the says it doesn't work
either
this doesn't either work you know why
cuz
cuz if the
is really only 31 hours meaning the
hours
it's really
31 hours there's an extra hour in the
that's unaccounted for that I don't
really know what to do with what's that
the time
the
length of the was 187 hours
and the width was 135 hours
so the area going
that's where the length is it was 187
the place where the were able to walk
where everybody was allowed to go
was 11 the place where the
were allowed to go now can go further
but it means even
that was also
how much
the was
the
was 100 you have 11 left if you're doing
the math comes out
so there's 11 hours
behind the hours
either way the
the
was 187 hours long every single hour is
accounted for in the of 187 how many
hours did we allocate towards the
32 if it's really only 31 because again
the we're assuming for sure the 187 are
all hours
so if that's the case there's one extra
hour what what do I do with this hour
and it's not just the
where do I put the hour every inch of
the is a different
so you have to tell me what the status
of that one hour is I didn't tell me
that must be that the on the bottom is
really 32 by 32 and if that's the case
and that's the out of this third option
and if that's the case we're back to the
drawing board how exactly do we make
sense of this
that says that the
which was the
was an hour which was an hour which was
an hour which was the was an hour
and the
the
was an hour
what does that mean
it means the height can't be because of
the
it [snorts] means that it was indented
an hour as opposed to a regular as
opposed to a regular
well that means the
based on our should be 25 hours and
forget the it's a
in
that says it was 24 hours or you want to
tell me it means that but you want to
tell me that the at the floor is 31
hours and you do the math 186 minus 30
it all works out
it can't be because I have a that says
clearly it's 32 hours on the bottom so
what exactly is going on is
you know what you have to say you have
to make a
you have to say that it's a little bit
it's a little bit talking about the
height and it's a little bit talking
about the indentation when we say the
and the
are all hours
THEY DON'T ALL MEAN the same thing how
does this work out
which is the
is
that's what I'm talking about the height
the height of the was an hour
an hour
when we talk about the
it's referring to the it's
referring to the indentation and
when we talk about the
that
also if you take a look at the
that's also referring to the height the
last
but as it relates to the indentation of
the
that's
doesn't matter if it's going to be an
hour
or it's going to be an hour
well so the
the
is the height the
the
is the
and the
the
is the height what about the
of the
of the of the
it's
not something that really matters says
the based on this how
how tall is the
how tall
right it's 58
why is it 58 because it's 10 hours times
six stating that two
of those hours the hour of the and the
hour of the are really
so how many do you have 60 minus two
you're left with is 58
what's where's the
what's the midpoint of the
it's the 29 hour mark from the from the
until the how much space do you from the
until the how much space do you have
so that's four hours
but one of the hours is
the
right so it's four times six which is 24
minus one cuz one of them is
so it's really 23 so from the until the
how many do you have 23
you have 23
right how much
how much
how much space is there from the
which is
23 from the top so 58 minus 23
which is 35 until the
which is the
which is 29
it's six it's
it's
that's what the said
so the
regarding the
the
works out perfectly as it relates to the
height
as it relates to the height it's
okay so we addressed the height what
about the width so mysteriously the
doesn't address the width the expects us
to do the math so we have to go back now
and we have to figure out the width by
ourselves what was the issue with the
width what was the issue with making all
these indentations conceptually you can
get it in one second what was the issue
the issue was that if all those hours
that we were were really hours
so it's an hour hour hour on this side
hour hour hour on this side or
>> [laughter]
>> on this side
on that side it accumulated to a full
hour and we were ended up being off when
we got to the top of the by the and even
though it said
but then minus one minus one it went
from 25 to 24 that's a
of the already
there was there was no option to say
right at that point
there was no way out at that point you
couldn't get away with it
the
that it's true it was an hour
but it's only two of the hours that are
hours
or or the way the presented it now one
of the hours that are hours
what's the of only one of the hours
there's only one time that we were
inaccurate right we were only inaccurate
one time we were inaccurate let's it's
by the right that's what the says so the
was 32 by 32 and then
when you put the
block on top of that you ended up with
30 by 30 now the goes in how much we
said it goes in only five right that's
the
if it goes in five
so the block that's on top of that is
not 28 by 28 what is it really it's 28
and a third by 28 and a third cuz I have
an extra on one side extra on the other
side the two together make up a third so
I end up with a third that doesn't
bother me so much cuz then I could
already say
and because I could say
so there I'm not off by a full I'm not
off by a full
so there no [snorts] no it's a fraction
the fractions don't bother me so the
when the when we go ahead and we say 28
so it's 28 and then when you get to the
top it's going to be 26 minus one minus
one you're going to end up with 24 says
Rashi speaks out that when the said that
regarding the indentation of the
we're indifferent you know why we're
indifferent because the only reason we
cared is because we were afraid that we
were going to get past fraction and once
you get to a full number you're off 27
and it's then 26 that's a problem but
here even if there's an indentation by
the
it's likely going to be a fraction
instead of being off by 1/3 it's going
to be off by 2/3 but as long as it's off
by a fraction that doesn't bother me and
as a result that is going to be an issue
so in other words what's the bottom line
the
the the
the
the is referring to the the what does it
mean it means the height of the which
was one hour was really an hour
and then when we say the
when we say that the indentation the
canissa of the soiveiv,
or when we say that the soiveiv was an
amabas amisha tuchim, it's referring to
the canissa. And then when we say the
cronice again was an ama, it's referring
to
bas amisha tuchim, it's referring to the
height. It's not the same. The gemara
felt the chazakila would make perfect
sense
for it all to be
the same way, but the maisa the gemara
said there's no way to make it work.
Because if it's all the height, you're
going to run into an issue. There's
going to be
too much proximity between the soiveiv
and the chota circle. We need to have a
full ama in between. If it's going to be
all with regards to the to the canissa,
well then it's going to come out that
the makam amarakh is 25 amas by 25 amas,
not 24 amas by 24 amas. There was a
workaround to say that the mizbeach is
really 31 amas by 31, not 32 by 32. But
the problem is that what do I do with
that ama in the mishna? Clearly defined
what every single ama was meant for in
the azara. The way you make it work, the
way you make it work is you say
What's for sure the gemara says is that
the ama yosid is on the height, the ama
soiveiv is in the canissa, and the ama
cronis is in the height. What's open for
debate is that it could be the canissa
of the cronis. That could be an
something that's an amabas amisha
tuchim. That could be something that's
an amabas shisha tuchim. Now at first
glance, this shtikel Torah sounds like a
very dochak dig a shtikel Torah, right?
That's what the pasuk means. Come on,
it's not what the pasuk means. Either
the pasuk's talking all about height or
the pasuk's talking all about width. So
the gemara and this is the punchline of
the sugya, deka nami, it's actually very
meduyak that way. Diksiv, again, we
dismiss these words in Yichazkel as
above our paygrade, which is fair when
you're learning Yichazkel. Definitely,
>> [snorts]
>> Yichazkel is distinguished amongst all
the neviim in terms of
the esoteric nature of his nevuah. Hence
the phrase rosh hashishah bayom mashal
omer, even Yichazkel ben Buzi mayoylam,
right? But the bottom line is that if
you look at this pasuk, one thing is
clear. It said cheika ama. That's
referring to the yosid. And then it said
vaama roichav, which is referring to the
soiveiv. Ama roichav, why do you mention
even the word roichav? The teretz is
cheika ama means the height, ama roichav
is referring to the width. It's actually
meforesh doch the gemara shma minna this
pshat. So inasmuch as at first glance it
seems a little bit dochak, but really at
the end of the day, at the end of the
day, shma minna, this is exactly the way
it is.
