the goal of the megan david shiva torah
center was to create a certain love for
learning
for torah life that students might not
always come out of the classroom with
when a boy comes to learn at night
that's making the torah his
when a girl comes to a class after
school
she's now personally engaged so the goal
of the program is to to show the kids
that learning torah is not just during
school we also do a program after school
where there's torah in their life and
it's not just in the morning and the day
it's a nine to five type of thing it's
part of their life these kids need to
know that they're not just coming to
school to learn torah in school torah is
a way of life torah something that they
need mornings nights something that for
the rest of their life they'll aspire to
be those people who come to shul who are
the the learners in the morning the
learners at night and they're beginning
now they're starting it now because uh
good habits begin when they're kids you
know they understand the students here
that torah is not a subject
because if it was just another subject
you wouldn't see them running in on a
sunday morning to
to come and learn another subject to
them
is life nowadays there's a lot of
competition out there in the world the
video games the phones the programs the
things and the fact that a kid who does
have access to all of that and they're
still picking up to come to magen david
night program sunday program voluntarily
that shows everything it's not an
obligation we're coming on our own
choice we want to come we want to spend
time with our rabbis we want to learn
and we just want to have a good time
i see my friends when we get there and
we all learn together it's very fun
we're with our friends in a different
environment it's a different
relationship with your teacher i come to
school at night to learn because i like
learning and
my rabbis teach us very good i like how
we do after school programs because i
like learning with my rabbis and like
how they come out to teach us
here after school is already over my
favorite part is sometimes when we get
to go to the seventh floor midrash and
listen to rabbi shelby make a speech you
discuss things you ask questions it's us
just learn and remember or learn and
understand for the test when you have a
rabbi student relationship in the
classroom to a degree it's somewhat
limited you know but it's these after
school programs when you have you're
learning with them at night you're
learning with them on sunday morning
that cultivates a relationship that will
be life lasting meghan david shiva torah
center is one of many programs
that give us the opportunity for parents
to engage in the education of their
children
fathers to pray with their sons on a
sunday morning for moms we started a
beautiful
weekly class it's more than just
the education of the children
in in the regular school classes it's
about creating torah as a lifestyle the
sunday morning program
the girls come in
we have breakfast together and we pray
together and after tefila
we have learning program there is a
topic there's this idea that we're
delving deeper into after that there's
an interactive component where the girls
get to do something a project or an
activity or something that relates to
that topic so sunday morning we do a
father-son program where we have
boys come some boys come with their
fathers some boys who come without their
fathers
breakfast and then we do learning for
about 25 minutes and then we do a
special halacha presentation tuesday
night is a different program that
program is the
law we're learning what our tefilot mean
the other night we began and we had a
girls class and the amount of girls that
were there and then the amount of girls
that came over afterwards for questions
and about their life and about their
family was where now it resonated on a
very deep level to walk in and see
actual community members that
i knew and i grew up with leading the
way
and knowing exactly what our girls need
and being there to support them and a
role model that behavior is just
makes me feel so comfortable so it's not
so easy to come early in the morning on
a sunday or after school after you've
learned all day but the girls that are
coming are enjoying it so much i
encourage those that haven't tried it
yet come give us a shot i think you'll
see that it's worthwhile you see them
they're running in they come in
and it's not just they're not here for
the donuts they're here and they're not
here for the waffles they're here for
the
you know to see their rabbis to see
their teachers and for the learning and
to be there with their friends and it's
a really beautiful atmosphere in the in
the ho yeshiva it's not just about
what's happening in the classroom it's
what's happening out of the classroom
and the truth sometimes i feel like they
never really leave everybody should be
coming because
we learn about all these cool things you
should come because it's really fun it's
special if you're not coming you're
really missing out on this program
because it's really a great way to get
out of the house learn torah doom it's
vote build a relationship with your
rabbis and you just really got to get
here there's nothing you're missing
you're going to miss it out if you come
it's exciting it's fun they motivate you
you get prizes breakfast i took the step
of taking classes that aren't mandatory
and i i won't ever go back i moved up
and i'll stay there i'm hoping that i
can continue doing this when i get older
i hope to learn many more um
when i get older
