The Tambourines That Defied Logic - Parshat Bo
73 views
In Parshat Bo, Hashem trusted our potential before we were spiritually ready. This Shabbat Shmooze is a call to trust that same potential in ourselves and take the steps that will bring our geula. Welcome back to another episode of
Shabbat shmooze.
This week's parsha
is parshat [music] Bo.
Pharaoh finally lets us go. Parshat Bo
is loud, makot, miracles, fire, blood,
darkness.
But the most [music]
explosive line in the entire parsha
is so quiet. It's almost casual and it's
like [music] if you blink you might miss
it. But this dictates everything we
stand for as a nation.
The pasuk is vehigadeta levincha bayom
hahu lemor. Ba'avur [music] zeh asah
Hashem li betzeiti mimitzrayim.
And the translation is
>> [music]
>> and you shall tell your son on that day
because of this Hashem acted for me
>> [music]
>> when I left Egypt.
Wait, what?
What in the world because of this?
Because of what? What does that mean?
>> [music]
>> So we turn to Rashi and Rashi drops a
theological grenade. Ba'avur zeh,
>> [music]
>> which means because of this, means
bishvil she'akayem mitzvotav.
In order [music] for me to do the
mitzvot.
What mitzvot? We didn't get the Torah
yet. We weren't a nation yet. [music]
What is happening?
And friends, this is the bombshell
moment and this is the pasuk [music]
that really, for me,
is a constant [music] reminder of what
Hashem
expects of us his children.
Hashem redeemed us on [music] credit.
That's right.
We were not keeping the mitzvot yet
because we didn't have the Torah yet,
but Hashem [music] said, "I know your
potential and I know what you're capable
of becoming. So I'm going to redeem
[music] you now and then we'll we'll
figure it out along the way."
This is crazy because if you stop
[music] and pay attention,
we were not spiritually ready to leave
Mitzrayim. We were on the 49th level of
tumah. We were
assimilated, [music] we were scarred, we
were spiritually horrendous.
But Hashem said, [music]
"I know what my children have the
potential to become and because of that,
[music]
this way to go."
Almost every single time I speak, I
speak for groups of women,
I conclude with this with this
machshavah, with this thought.
We're taught and I and I hope if there
are any men listening to this, I doubt
there is, but if there's any man
listening to this, I hope you do not get
offended.
>> [music]
>> But this is the truth of the matter.
Bishvil nashim tzidkaniyot nigalu
avoteinu mimitzrayim.
It's because of the righteous [music]
women that we were redeemed from
Mitzrayim. What's the continuation of
that pasuk? Ba'atid lehigael. And that
is exactly [music]
who will redeem us again ba'atid in the
future. What did we do that got us to
merit [music] such a title? We really
didn't do much. As we see in parshat Bo
during the korban Pesach, our men are
the ones slaughtering the seh, the god
of the Mitzri, and we're just kind of
standing around and figuring things out,
but [music] it was that
moment of Hashem, I don't understand
what you're doing, but I trust you.
[music] And not only do I trust you, I
trust you so implicitly that I'm going
to go build tambourines. So BRB, Hashem.
We're going to go make drums so that we
could serve you with them [music] when
we split when you split the ocean when
you split the Yam Suf for us and we are
redeemed.
When Hashem [music] saw that us ladies,
instead of panicking and [music]
screaming and getting depressed and
getting anxious and micromanaging
>> [music]
>> and belittling our husbands and yelling
at them and saying, "You can't do that.
That's ludicrous. You're going to get
all of [music] us killed." We sat back
and we said, "Oh, Hashem, this is a
little nutty. We don't get it, but we
trust you.
We trust you so much, we're going to go
build our tambourines."
When Hashem saw [music]
that emunah shetuta that we had, he
said, "Okay, my my my daughters,
you guys got yourselves [music] out.
Let's go. Pack it up and get out." It's
not enough for like the ultimate geulah,
like Mashiach and freedom in that
[music] sense, but it is enough to get
you out of Mitzrayim. So what do we do
from there on? Hashem says, "I'll take
that as your down payment [music]
and as we get the Torah and you do
mitzvot and you say na'aseh [music]
venishma, you become who you're meant to
be, those will be your future deposits."
So guys,
this is our spiritual homework.
Rise above your nature.
Find your nature, whatever it is,
and say, "Hashem, not [music] for me,
but to keep your mitzvot and because you
know I have a lot of potential. I'm not
[music] perfect now. I'm not perfect
now. None of us are perfect now. We're
all works in progress. But that's the
beauty of this. That's the beauty of
parshat Bo. Hashem [music] redeems us on
credit. Hashem redeems us knowing
who we are willing to become."
So
think [music] to yourself, where is one
area that you sort of struggle.
And then I want this entire week,
[music] our spiritual homework to be as
follows.
Every time you come to do [music] that
week's that weak spot, whether it's
lashon hara,
um,
speaking disrespectfully to somebody,
wearing clothes that probably is not
what you should be wearing, uh, skipping
a tefillah, skipping nishmat, not saying
tehillim, whatever it is, not giving
tzedakah,
this week, every time the opportunity
arises for [music] you to succumb to
your nature,
stop.
Rise above.
And do that leshem [music] shamayim, for
Hashem, and say, "Hashem, that's another
down payment." And that is going to be
how we get [music] through the week, but
also how we get through this galut.
We're almost there. We're at the tail
end of galut. We're [music] so close to
geulah and Hashem tells us it's on us.
It's not on the men. So what do we have
to do?
Just what we did back then. Rise above
our nature and [music] give Hashem
another down payment. Everyone has their
nature and everyone has their own
version of a down payment. [music] For
someone not to speak lashon hara might
be equivalent to someone to cover their
head. Only Hashem has those cheshbonot.
But the most beautiful part about
parshat Bo [music] is that Hashem
reminds us,
"I'm redeeming you way before [music]
you get the Torah and the mitzvot
because I know your potential and I know
who you're able to become." So since we
have that reassurance from Hashem and
we're taught [music] that bishvil nashim
tzidkaniyot nigalu avoteinu mimitzrayim,
ladies, let's go.
Let's do this. [music]
Parshat Bo, bring it on. Ba'avur zeh,
>> [music]
>> that is the goal. We're not going to
say,
"Oh, Hashem,
>> [music]
>> uh, I I I I kind of like messed up
yesterday. I didn't have my shabbat. I'm
not going to I'm not going to have it
today." No, [music] no, no. Rise above.
Make Hashem happy. Make Hashem super
proud and ezrat Hashem,
we will get out of this galut so fast
and so furious. I'm so [music] ready.
I'm packed and ready to go and I hope
you are too. All right, love you guys.
Have a wonderful, healthy, happy,
beautiful week and a Shabbat shalom. And
if you are traveling, safe travels and
you are If you are not traveling, bring
Yerushalayim wherever you are. Love you
all. Shabbat shalom.
