hey I'm deie Klein from prep and rally
and today I'm going to be showing you
how to care for your chef's knife and
use it
[Music]
properly we've got to talk about a
little care and maintenance and the
fundamentals of using your knife be sure
to always store your knife either in
your box that it came in or hang it up
on a magnetic strip if you have you also
don't want to throw your knife in a
dishwasher ideally you want to hand wash
and dry thoroughly after you're done
using it I don't believe in using a wet
stone or sending your Knives Out to Get
It professionally sharpened because who
has time for that not me I'm a busy Mom
I just don't have time for it so I
highly recommend getting a two or three
stage knife sharpener such as this one
there are a ton of Brands you go to
ahead to Amazon and buy any of them it's
like $5 but the best purchase you will
make because it will keep your knife in
great condition the way to hold your
knife you want to make sure you gripping
it like this your thumb on one side your
index finger on the other for one of the
reasons I love this knife is this little
area right here and it has the perfect
indentation to show you where to grip it
so you're not going to hold it like this
you're really going to grip it from
these two indentations and that is how
you're going to be one with your knife
and it's almost going to be an extension
of your arm think of it as an extension
so you really want to feel comfortable
with this in your hand and you don't
want to let the knife control you you
are controlling the knife and you want
to make sure that you are using this
rocking motion you can use that rocking
motion and this is the most important
thing that you will learn when you are
cutting you want to always make sure
you're holding your fingers inwards like
a ball so kind of like when you take
piano lessons as a kid I did for ever uh
they always have you hold an orange or
an apple to really show you how to keep
your hands curled in that's what you
want to think about when you are cutting
pretend like you are holding a bowl so
your fingertips are pointing inwards and
that will allow you to not cut them keep
them safe and you will be leaning and
resting your knife on this part of your
knuckle and that is what serves as your
guide and you will be able to cut
properly without cutting yourself and
now you know how to care and maintain
your chef's knife so it will last you a
lifetime
