The country's chief rabbis have lined up with the Metro Carta in opposing the digging. This puts heavy pressure on the government coalition which depends on ultra religious elements for support but is also being watched closely by others for any sign of surrender to the ultraorththodox who however visible their protest still represent only a small minority of Israelis. This is Don Dixon reporting from Jerusalem. But another group of Jewish leaders who do not see eye to eye on a religious issue are protesting outside the world at this hour. And is there with us that story this demonstration is an extension of a struggle that's been pitting Jew against Jew in Israel over the past several weeks. The excavation of sites in Jerusalem and many ultraorthodox Jews contain ancient graves. The problems Jewish law says the dead shall not be discovered. The archaeological digging has been going on for 30 years, but it was not until recently that religious zealots proclaim that the ancient biblical city of David is dotted with individual grave sites and large cemeteries. The issue has become a large-scale political battle in Israel and recent attempts by the ultraorththodox Jews to stop the excavations have wound up in ugly clashes with Israeli police. Late this afternoon, hundreds of ultrorthodox Jews from the New York area crowded along Park Avenue in the shadow of the Waldo Ptoria Hotel where Prime Minister Bean is staying during his visit in New York.
