Join me as we learn kumish for Thursday
paras chapter 27 verse 11. Yesterday we
spoke about Moshe telling the Jewish
people about the covenant that they have
to set up the boulders. The boulders
that were in the Jordan River and then
the boulders that they were going to
write the Torah in seven different
languages and then with lime and take
off the uh the plaster from it. Today
Moshe reminds them as well as he
mentioned that once they cross over the
Jordan River, there will be the the
ceremony of blessings and curses which
they will be on two different mountains.
And Moshe now describes how that's going
to work.
Mosha commanded the people on that day,
saying,
"These are the ones that the following
tribes that will stand on Mount Grem in
order to bless the people when you cross
over the Jordan River."
The tribes that are going to be on one
mountain and there's going to be on
Mount Grie are going to be Shim, Ley,
Yehuda, and Byam.
He doesn't mean that they themselves
will bless them. was the Levites that
were standing in the middle that were
blessing the people
that it says in the tractor of
six tribes went to the mount top of
Mount Grie
and six went to the top of Mount Aim
and the Levites those that were able to
carry the ark and the ark itself was in
the middle
that the Levites turned their faces to
Mount Grem.
They began by saying a blessing
the blessing blessed the one that
doesn't make an image and both of them
from both mountains the six tribes on
this one the six tribes on the other
would answer then the Levites turned
their faces
and they fed towards Mount Ael
and they began with the curses and they
said cursed is the man will make a that
would make a statue
and then they would answer and then they
went back and faced mount
one that doesn't curse his father or
mother.
And then they would face mount evil and
they would say cursed is the one that
does so and so to all the verses they
would say facing one mountain or cursed
facing another mountain but both tribe
both sets of tribes six and each
mountain would answer a mean the one
saying it was the co and the levite in
the center
until they would go to the end cursed is
the one that doesn't follow the words of
the
verse
These are those that would stand on
Mount A when the curses were being said,
the six tribes were usher.
Verse 14,
and the Levites would then respond and
speak up
and to all the Jewish people in a loud
voice. Verse 15,
cursed to be the man who makes a
sculptured molten image.
It is an abomination to being the
handiwork of a craftsman.
And he sets it up in secret.
And everybody would all the people
respond by saying amen. Verse 16,
cursed be the one who degrades his
father or mother.
Amen. And everybody would respond. All
the people will say amen. What is the
word ma? Mazal. Degrades. Embarrasses.
So we learned previously in chapter 25
that your brother would be embarrassed
because if you hit him verse 17
cursed be the one who pushes back on his
neighbor's landmark
and all people will answer
what is the word meaning
he pushes back his friend's property and
steals the property of his fellow of his
neighbor
like Isaiah uses the terminology and
they pushed back. Verse 18,
cursed be the one who misguides a blind
person on the way. And all the people
answer. Now remember, every time they're
facing back and forth, facing Mount
Griezim, facing Mount Ail.
Now, whatever they say in the negative
curse, they would face Mount Griezman
and say in the positive and the
affirmation, blessed. Though the verse
doesn't mention each one of them.
somebody who's blind. It doesn't
necessarily only mean a blind person
literally, but even giving a person bad
advice to be able that he should
stumble. Verse 19,
curse be the one who perverts the
judgment of the convert
and of the orphan and the widow.
And everybody would answer a mean as we
said previously. Now they would face
Mount Griezmann and believe it would say
blessed is one of the next case because
he only brings the negative. So blessed
is one who does not who is not intimate
with his father's um with his father's
wife. Now verse 20.
Cursed is one who fornicates with his
father's wife
because he he figuratively uncovered the
corner of his father's garment.
A mean and everyone all the people would
say a mean.
Verse 21.
Cursed be the one who engages in
relations with an animal.
And all the people will say amen. As
mentioned by each time they would say
the positive, the blessings facing hard
grieim and the curses and the negative
facing mount AI.
Cursed be the one who engages in
relations with uh his mother-in-law.
I'm sorry. Either with his sister. Oh,
cursed be the one who who has relations
with his sister. Now whether whether a
sister for daughter of the father sister
of the or a daughter of the mother and
everybody will answer a mean
curse be the one who has relations with
his mother-in-law
a and everybody will answer a mean all
the people will say amen. Verse 24
cursed be the one who strikes his fellow
in secret
and everybody will say amen.
What does it mean hitting somebody in
secret? Rashi says this refers to
this is referring to slander because
you're talking about the other fellow
and he doesn't know about it. So it's as
if you're hitting the person in secret.
I saw this in the uh book from whash
quotes many times and he says as
follows. If you notice here,
there's 11 times that the Torah uses the
one curse be the one besides the last
one which it doesn't say one who doesn't
keep
this is going toward it's the 11 tribes
except the tribe of Shim
because when it comes to the tribe of
Shim it does not say cursed
because he did not have in his heart.
Moshe did not want to bless him before
he died when he blessed all the other
tribes because of the story that
happened with Zim and he did not want to
bless him because of that terrible
desecration of God's name. So therefore
therefore he didn't want to curse him as
well. Meaning I'm not going to curse him
and therefore I'm not going to bless
him. So he shouldn't be just with a
curse and not with a blessing.
Verse 26,
cursed be the one who does not I'm sorry
or verse 25
curse be the one who takes a bribe to
put an innocent person
innocent person to death and everybody
would answer
verse 26
cursed be the one who does not follow
the words of does not uphold the words
of this Torah
then fulfilling them And everybody would
answer, "Amen."
In this case, this includes in general
about all the mitzvah of the Torah
that the Jewish people accepted of them
upon this by a curse and with the oath
that they will follow the commandments.
This is a covenant that they enter the
promise and the oath that they make that
they will follow the laws. Now, the
Torah goes on to tell us the blessing
and the consequences for following God's
commandments and if God forbid not.
Chapter 28 verse one.
And if you obey your God and you
safeguard his commandments last to
safeguard and to do as call of all the
commandments that I command you today,
and God will make you great, will place
you supreme
and all the nations of the earth. Verse
two,
and all the blessings, all the following
blessings will pursue you
and overtake you
because you will follow in the voice of
God your God. You obey what Hashem tells
you. Verse three,
blessed are you in the city
and blessed are you in the field.
Blessed are you the fruits of your womb
and the fruits of your soil
and the fruits of your livestock,
the offspring of your cattle,
the offspring of your cattle and the
choice of your flock.
This means the cattle, the offsprings of
your cattle
that that the animal gives as a gift
from its womb.
the choice of your cattle.
Why were they called from the word
wealth?
Because they were the supreme, the best
cattle. So therefore, they would make
their owners wealthy because either
because they were able to sell them for
a lot of money or because they were good
work and they were able to do a lot for
the owner.
like these stones that he said by and
was giant that it was called that he was
living in a very um difficult place to
conquer. It was very popular was strong.
It was a choice a good place to live. So
to these flock are very good.
Blessed will be your basket and your
kneading bowl.
This is referring to your fruit and your
dough.
When it talks about your basket, it's
referring to the soft something liquidy
in uh in the fruit for example wine oil
that you have to see. You have to put
through a se basket and whatever comes
out through the holes in the baskets
you're able to catch is referring
something dry like nuts, raisins um and
it's called and the word leftovers of
that it's not something that flows out
of the basket. It actually stays in
there. You don't have to worry about it
going out. Verse six,
blessed are you when you enter
and blessed are you when you depart.
Rashi, what does this mean? So simple
interpretation means that you're blessed
when you walk in into your home and when
you go out of your home. However,
another explanation
when you pass from this world, it should
be without a sin.
Just like when you entered the world,
you entered without sin. So to when you
leave this world should also be without
sin. This concludes the fifth Torah
reading of Pares Kisaf.
