my name is Joshua Weinstein and my new film manasha will be premiering at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival doep history for movie shift for the last decade I've been making documentaries after I traveled and and did so many projects abroad I just realized that there's worlds in America that are just as unknown and foreign to us and and my goal with film making is always to take the unknown and make it Universal so when I thought about making a film in burough Park in get is with realic Jews to me it was just as interesting as any documentary I ever made what's is the mind in the movie Josh the story of manasha is a universal story it's about a widowed father who's trying to keep custody of of his son this film takes you into a world that that's rarely seen on film where where most people don't have smartphones it's a world where most people do not use the Internet it's a it's a world where everyone wears the same Garb where where men are kept separately where there there signs on the street that say men on this side women on that side it's a world that feels off-putting at first but actually is filled with warmth and humor and and Incredible characters movie in yish so Yiddish was the cultural language of Jews for hundreds of years books plays music everything was written in yish and in the creation of Israel that whole culture sort of thater and Hebrew became the language of secular Judaism so with this film it's we able to make one of the first movies in almost 80 years that is completely in yish the movie authenticity to this film was incredibly important manasha is a lovable schlub who works at a grocery store um he's playful he really wants to be the best father for his son he's an outsider and Outsider Community definitely had lots of challenges definitely it's hard for the best actors to perform and and for this being my first time directing actors and these actors first times acting I mean most these actors have never watched movies before they don't their reference for act is like borch belt comedians so me coming from this documentary tradition trying to make it smaller and and more Humane was a challenge for all of us but something that I know audiences will find incredibly rewarding when they when they watch the film
