Health issues, financial issues, you name it—the Rebbe would often point people to check their tefillin and mezuzot. As we approach the new year, Elul is an especially fitting time to do the same. There is an age-old custom to check our tefillin and mezuzot during this month and make sure they are kosher. A mezuzah is much more than a decoration or symbol on the outside of your house.
