Today we are joined by a very special guest Ravitzuk Gman about whom a biography living legend has just been written. Thank you Rav Gman for joining us from Erit Israel from your home in Mdalo Amech. It's a pleasure and an honor to speak to you. Thank you for everything. You know our scroll is is is is one from the biggest kesh Hashem to brought Torah for am. Thank you for everything. Well, thank you for giving us the honor of being the publishing house to release this fantastic book. If I may say so myself, it's one of the most inspiring biographies that I've ever read and I'm sure readers who are getting their hands on the book now will feel the same. Many people have heard snippets of your life story. But before we get into specific questions that I'd love to ask you, give us a little background going back almost 50 years when you first got to Mikdal. Some people may know the details, but for those who don't, tell us a little about how a sixth generation your Shia the son of Rabis Gman ended up in Mdalamech building an empire of Tyra and Kir. What happened? I've been born like you mentioned sixth generation in Israel in Maya. My father was one from the greatest ginium from Jerusalem. A soldier that live in Mdal is ashamed to say that he lives here. If you ask him where you live, he lives near Afoola. I decided I will take one hill and I will go to Mcdal to volunteer myself to work with the youngsters. Their background was because where I live in Maya Shahim between Maya Sharim and the old city you have a a village called Musara from Moroccan people very very hard place you know the black panthers they come from there and since I've been 16 years old I used to go and and speak to the boys and invited them to my home I have a feeling for this faradim I have a feeling Because then I decided I was very close not closed I was a for the rabbi and I say this is my idea. I want to have permission from the reb says go it will be success. I was I was in this time 22. I was just married and I come to my wife and I say I want to go to Mikdalik and she says go and see and if you like I will come after you. I come to Mikdalik. I was naive you know every I come from Shim that every building is a caller. I come there I ask who is the yeshiva they look at me but who can I find the youngsters to say the disco? I never hear disco in my life and mayor shim you don't hear disco. I think maybe it's a new new system for the yeshiva called disco. What did you tell her at that point? Because she obviously when she married you, she didn't think she was moving to Mdal. Because I when I've been married from my father all of us he make the this time a problem because the old was still the the the great from a great after the great they left one time was a and my father stay up and say you put So much work in for the children from Alf till the 8th grade what what will be later we need to do something okay they decided we're going to build mifas my father was in in America together they stay they come back and they built meas just when I were married I met my wife I the plan was that I go to be a in this m and this is what happened a year before the war I started to be a mag this is the plan to be a mag in in learning and give shim never thinking this is a mdalamic did you ever feel bad over the years that you never got to live your dream of becoming a magir never never because thank god in this let me come to Mikdal today may have more for 22,000 graduate from mcdalo and the all two 20,000 have many mags and if not mcdalo we will not need the mag then migdalo bill that you need to have mag the most amazing part I think of your takeover so to speak of mdala is that your biggest antagonists the people who should have been most against you ended up coming around to your side. This story is very very a hard story to tell. But because the book says this, I will tell us. When I come to Mikdalah, I tell you then I became they used to call me the disco rabbi. They they was involved in crime in this and started to work in jails. But one day I go in in the street in Mdalmic in B from the corn I see beautiful cows. They say the Arabs people because Mikdalik is only 10 kilometers from Nazareth. in Aran Mcdalmic. many Arabs villages and these guys the boys there the young fell they working very very hard they don't go to the army they make money and they have beautiful cars and they come here to take the girls from here for money when I hear this I became a shock you know you come from a holy home never thinking I say I ask who make the all who because I see that is organized This is not only cars they organize they go they coming they tell me somebody his name was Pinas he organized he was the like el cap from this place I decided to to go this pedas el capony I go to him home you know I say I think the book is written like and till today I remember there was a Romano couple dancers old couple from Romania speak. But I I I think myself as the biggest mitzvah I go back in and I don't tell my father I I have apartment that my father and my how you say in English the my wife's father is they bought they brought me a apartment in Kana Khana near the near the yeshiva from Chubin the end I I tell I sell the m my my apartment to somebody's sab in in from the breast and I take the money and I come I come with the money in in somebody I buy I buy uh what they call a truck false wagon and then I come to this pin and I tell him pin has I have here here is the key. The story is almost hard to believe. Of course my father was in the beginning he cannot understand what I do but but I I I explain him that that in in this money I save so much girls from God done and everything but in later later it it thanks me the whole life why I do this. The truth is that the proof is in the pudding. We see that what you did was successful and as you said once you were able to bring that alapone onto your side you were able to attract other people. Now when you started visiting discos to be macar of the youth it was a very unconventional thing people hadn't done it before. Were there detractors who told you Rabbi Gman we don't do that type of thing. Did you have people telling you that what you were doing was somewhat off color? Of course, of course. The false thing my friends for mayor they can't they can't believe they can't believe what happened because I used to brought them from time to time the old guys to and they they see me around did sadikim they can't believe what happened here but later little by little they see the success because what happened later uh uh somebody from the guys tell me My brother is in jail. I say your brother is my brother. Let's go visit in jail. I come to the jail shat. I go in 400 prisoners. Moshe, Jacob, I became broken. I go to the head from the jail and I say to them, I want to come here twice a week to learning with the prisoners pilot. I don't ask for money. I give I I want to give what we call voluntary. He says okay we started a program from learning med prison in Hebrew they call this shake shikum that rehabilitation through that to religious right away this moment that I speak to you this moment may have in the old prison more from thousand prisoners right now in the old prisons have yeshivas sitting and learning through the years may have from Balub and this this this brought me to be involved also in the jails. later after four years working in the jails in the discourse I understand that if somebody will take these guys the in crime he will take them in the right time when they're 10 11 and give them love and give them education they can be the best boys they can tell everything I tell every time this story that I make a khan party in jail the falseh I left the jail. I give a kiss spontane from the prisoners. Three days later, I receive a passcard card from post. It says a letter. Rabbi, I've been the prison that you give him a kiss. I want you know this is the fourth time in my life that I receive a kiss from somebody. When I hear this and see the letter, a man that is in the age 40, never receive a kiss. I say, "Help me. I want to build a home for these girls and boys that never receive love and education and save them and start to go to find them in jail and rehabilitation and start to go to the parks in the discourse to find them there. Let's take him at the right time. And in 1972, the start of Mikdal with 18 boys in Hashem today may have more than 20 thou 22,000 graduates today walk in Mikdalo 900 people 80% from them grew up in Mikdal. So you start visiting Mdalamech regularly and then you decide to take a big step and you open up educational institutions. When did that take place and how did that develop? After four years that I walk in these streets and the in the jails in this, I understand that the most important to save this old idea from these boys and girls is not to wait when they go to the jail or the disco or they going to crime to drugs. Look for him when he's in the age 10 11 because these guys these kids never receive love in education. In 1972 we started Mikdal education the the with 18 boys and from the 18 boys grew up next year was 30 and then later and later and like I tell you today we have thousands of kids we have tens of thousand graduates in 80% that walk today in mid alone we have 900 people walking 80% sent grew up in Mdalora. He is at a big town for him makes for him and is very famous in a a year ago he make a bar mitzvah of his grandchild. I come to the bar mitzvah and I see there around 150 people his his kids. He has 10 kids brothers, sisters, all everybody. Everybody here what if I miss say yes I tell I started in 1972 was a boy I don't say his name that he want to leave I have I tell him you have 15 minutes to thinking what will be with you with your wife and children and everything after them he comes back and when I finish I say you know is the boy raigi here I say rase look these 150 people will not be exist if you live then into the barrier with this that you come by yourself miss gel you come back look in yourself you can inform look what you what you what you built in this kak that misg yourself you once told your father that when you look at these boys out of mdalik we're talking about decades ago all you see are namas right that's all you saw you saw their souls you saw the panemas and if I may say so and I don't think it's a secret that that's the recipe for your because all you see on the shamus and the question I'd like to ask you is how does a person acquire that ability to only see I tell you if you you say every day in the morning I thank you God that you created me for you honor. One is is rich lives in lives in Kisaria and one is a poor in Mdalik. He sent a letter to his rich son in Kisaria. You know your brother is going to be married next month in Bald of Atoria. Please come you and your wife and your kids everybody to the wedding. Take also your brother from Mdalah with his kids. And the father put in one in the letter. Everything what you will spend for mine honor I will pay you back. Oh this guy the Israeli the father will pay back. He takes his wife to Tel Aviv to a boutique in Denov center brought the nice clothing for himself the nice suit the nice ad the kids but the kids in M for his brother in Mdal he don't buy not clothing nothing only tell him I have a ticket and this and this day we fly to America okay day is coming and allow the two brothers the family going of the plane they Come New York in New York in Canada airport is waiting the father the leuton the force go out from the plane this boy from Kisaria beautiful his wife that father says to his old look my kids look my grandchild after them come out the pool for mdala the clothing is is not to believe he became a shape what can he do okay take him to the tin avenue let's in Brooklyn brought them the clothing and finish. After the wedding, the this son from Kisaya goes also to father. Father, you know how much cost me the whole boutique and the whole thing I spent. I wait for your check. The father says to him, you're a big boy. You can bulk and you will make you know how much overdraft I take for the all spent. You will take care of yourself. Father, you palm me. I never promise you that I will give you back for you for mine. I he comes to the mikv I will never forget in my life we dancing in the water that means his far his face is like is not to I see I became very close to him then he started to eat in the kabuts only vegetarian finished eating dant le from a year is is disappeared I don't see After six years, I was by the hotel and I see somebody goes with the wife. Speaking about connecting to the youth, your focus has been for decades on being marim, people outside of the Tyra community, but we're seeing today and for I would say for the last decade or two that there's a significant number of youth within the Kedi community who we might call them disenfranchised or we might call them struggling. Over here in America, some people call them kids at risk. Some people call them kids in pain. I go back to be the disco rabi like 40 years ago to take up my suit sit with the boys in Benuda buy a pizza a cigar drinking beer speaking day and night in them we take 60 boys and I say to them you will come you will build you village you will build I find a builder not religious bod He has a heart is ready to walk with his kids and they build a beautiful place called Zoharim Zarim aftersh a a beautiful place for the youths from these kids no from the religious homes they build the the the [Music] with everything is from boot the the the do the beds the boy says this bed I build this myself right now may have their 110 boy we have seven years that finish boy you're not asking Israel today is a model what happened there in Zarim from these boys they have their they have their learning what you call echoc culture they have their many many ideas they have their kabatusim what you call kabatusim Horse riding. Okay. I speak to them. I give him in and I in I take maybe 10 15 minutes spent. What is your name? I feel you. I go in my car. It's a true story from this week. My car my driver is running and he says to me that these guys is after my car till Tel a Viv. They going after me. till Tel Aiv and when you stop in the in the what you call in the no razone you know Ram when you when you stop in a traffic light they come next to you and I sit you next to the and they they looking meal they make me and I kiss them and they kiss me and then go after me after meal till I come to Tel Aiv I need to be they say we want to come to you we want to speak to you we need this is the feeling they broken inside if you see a boy like them speak to them invited them for Shabbat don't give a m right away why you don't learning the sh why you doing this you no you good you the best can I can I help you can can I have the honor that you come to me to visit me can I being connected. You will see what happened. You know, init. It's no secret that there's a tremendous divide between the religious community and the non-religious community. And many people view you as a very unique personality because you somehow bridge the gap. People look at you as a unifier. What could we do to bridge the gap? We know that you have this language that people understand this universal language of aava real. What could we do when we see that the really have a tremendous hatred for the community and what does the rv answer when the non-religious community attacks the community with all types of accusations about not going to the army about other issues? What's the answer to this tremendous conundrum? It's very very hard. I put in many many hours to work in this issue. And this is the reason that many times I go of the television. My reason is I want that the people to see a religious man like me with a building payers to work. I give you example right now have a program. This program is 17 years before pes before they call. What means you make packages in the sentence to pull people all over Israel. The next year, last year we have 20,000 packages in today is the who make the packages today because Colona usually we make the packages in in a place that people coming but Colona you have not they don't give you permission to come together you brought the food but who we will make is the packages the alme the alme they have a base in the army I can send you pictures and movies that you see every day 150 army they making the packages and the people that I received to volunteer brought the packages to the homes and this was yesterday in television in the papers next year will be my all reason is to show that the religious man is is is doing also but of course they have big questions Let's say in the corona corona they ask why you don't go the mask I have not the answer what is the problem to go in the mask what is the problem I don't know answer some some time I have not answer okay the army I I I give him example the army I say you see in my schools if I see a boy that he can be a big in learning okay learning boys don't learning is going to the army you can't have answer I walk my army I don't know if you know the story from the 70 paratroops in the second Lebanon war but the you ask a big question and the big problem especially the last right now is the election the whole election is around this issue Liberman Liberman day and night let's kill the let's put in the khadim in in in in the in the in the in the in the garbage And then it's the same thing the left guys a big problem. I guess it is an issue that's goes beyond the purview of this interview like you said it's a very very it's it's it comes down it's an existential issue that comes down to the identity of the country and uh you know I I don't know if the RV has any advice for what we could do. The rabbis will make a hunger strike and you will walk because if the rabbis if the rabbis will make a hunger strike not not some it will not will not be neesh but the you first thing is a ne they make a vote mostly vote no they don't they speak I I hear that Shabbat this Shabbat immediately they strike they come together in the hospital of all the all doctors the families I tell I say my wife I go to be Shabbat med doctors I come Friday Friday Friday in the afternoon and I brought boxes from what you call grape juice and they see me coming what I come to be with you. Shabbat you strike. I also want to be there and I start at Kab Shabas. Don't to believe then we make kesish in little by little Shabas night after Shabbat the headline in television Rabbi Gman for Mikdal strike together me the doctor Shabbat. I receive a telephone call from very big rabbi from Adasa hospital in Jerusalem. Rabbi Gman, I come that you're doing something like this against I say please Rabbi in two days the strike will be finished. If you want to hear my advice, go right away to the doctor. Show him that you care for him. Then later if you need the help, they will say when I in problem you look for me. when you in problem I will help you since then till today I can take a telephone and call the biggest professor a middle of the night to stay up to help me because he never forget that I has a problem I come to him and I and they never everybody forget you need to use every time to make a keshm that's a tremendous tremendous lesson to to be there for for others So that later on if there's a circumstance where we need them, they'll always remember. Exactly. Which is a tremendous lesson. Now one of your one of the opportunities that you had to make a big hashbah in America was and it's mentioned very prominently in the book was when you spoke at Madison Square Garden. Tell our viewers a little about why uh Av from Israel ended up in Madison Square Garden. What what was what was the what surrounded that event and why you did what you did at the halftime by leading everyone in in the recital of Shma? I will tell you I years ago was a game between Israel and Russia. They call this the game that the Russia game from from sport is chko I think something like this. It was big issue in Israel.
