How Larry David Redeemed the Most Hated Man in Baseball

They don't want him because he brought Bill Buckner with them. >> Are you Bill Buckner? >> Yeah. Herman here is from Boston. He's a big Red Sox fan and he can't be in the same room with Bill Buckner. Okay. >> Yeah. >> And you told me something very interesting that I don't know how much people are um up on their sports I wouldn't even call it sports trivia. I think it's a pretty famous, >> but Bill [clears throat] Buckner committed a famous error. >> Yes. For the Boston Red Sox, they had the game and Mookie uh Wilson hit a ball went between his legs. >> To Mookie Wilson. Little roller up along FIRST BEHIND THE BAG. IT GETS THROUGH BUTNER. >> ANYHOW, he really was a pariah in an entire city. >> A pariah. and so for doing the ball and people were more they accepted more after the the Red Sox won the World Series. >> Back to Folk. Red Sox fans have LONGED TO HEAR IT. THE BOSTON RED SOX are world champions. It has been 86 years and for the first time since 1918, the Boston Red Sox are champions of baseball. However, Larry wanted to give him redemption. >> Made me cry a little bit when he caught the baby. >> Mhm. >> And so, uh, yeah, I had to, we had to redeem him >> somehow. Somehow >> somehow. Yeah. >> And so, in the episode, uh, a baby comes out of a burning window. Building is burning. A baby comes out and he catches the baby. >> Catches it. >> Oh my god. And that to me that's that's one of those moments like yeah it's funny yeah it's all that but it was so heartwarming you know heartwarming that he got his uh you know >> so you when you tell me about that and I and I ask you like was it like legitimately healing for >> he was it was definitely healing I watched him he was he was filled with joy by the way I when I write comedy when I perform comedy anything that I do I don't know where it comes from I feel almost like >> it's a gift that's channeling through me. That's really what it feels like when it's at its best. >> Like when I would film Curb Your Enthusiasm and I would say things, never trying to be funny, but sometimes I would say things where, wow, where did that come from? >> How much of it was improvisational? >> The whole thing. Larry writes an outline and then we all act knowing what the scene's about and we make adjustments until we have the scene. >> What was the outtake ratio? Oh, very small. Really? Yeah. As a matter of fact, the very first DVD set we put out, there were outtakes and he and commentary. He hated all of that because really, and I agree with him with this, what's in the show is what's supposed to be in the show. The um outtakes, I know people enjoy those, but to me, >> bloopers real. >> Yeah. The Well, we do have a bloopers reel at every rap party, but the bloopers reel is more for the crew and everyone there sharing moments that we experience. [clears throat]
