Why Darkness Always Precedes Redemption - Parshat Vayeshev - Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair

[music] History advances through concealment. When the world darkens, we must know the inner light is gathering strength. After a lifetime of struggle, Yakov seeks calm, vayv, and he settled. Yakov [music] wanted Yeshua, tranquility, but instead the great storm of Yseph was about to break upon him. But Yseph's descent into Egypt was in fact the hidden beginning of redemption. The brothers couldn't see it, but Hashem was already weaving the future. And so too in our days, the world seems similarly unsettled. Large cultural shifts are taking place. Growing segments of society are adopting narratives that are at times deeply unsympathetic to the Jewish people. We see a rise in public hostility, in demonstrations, and in attitudes that echo ancient resentments in modern form. History has shown that when society absorbs strong ideological currents hostile to Jews, and even when they come from only a part of a larger community, the atmosphere for Jews becomes more challenging. The Torah teaches us not to fear that darkness, but to see within it the outline of a larger plan. For Yseph, Egypt, the most threatening place, becomes the very place of his ascendants. Egypt doesn't define Yoseph. He defines himself within the host culture. As it says, vi Hashem s Yseph. Hashem was with Yseph. And therefore, he becomes a source of blessing both for himself and for the host culture in which he lives. This is our path as well. We look at the shifts in the world, the rising tensions, the uncertainty, and we remember that the Jewish people have often walked through the darkest alleyways of history. But we always emerge stronger and more defined. The pressure clarifies who we are and it deepens our unity. It awakens the spiritual strength that complacency is weakened within us. Vayesv Yakov seeks to settle but Hashem calls to him to rise. And in our time too when the world around us waivers like shifting sands, Hashem is calling to us to rise up to deepen our strength, our connection to Torah and to live with the purpose and dignity that is the heritage of the Jewish people. The story of Ysef reminds us that concealed in every descent lies the seed of ascent. Behind every challenge lies hidden divine guidance. And behind every threatening shadow there lies a future of light that Hashem is already preparing. May we merit to see that light revealed swiftly, peacefully, openly for all Kalisrael and for the whole world.
