let's talk about food instead apparently
that's more interesting
than
fighting fires
um
what did we get to yesterday missonas
right
mizonate so where are we up to we got to
we okay let's try to work this one out
we've got any any food stuffs that have
got flour
but not enough flour to turn them into
bread
are going to be considered to be ms or
not so in general what are we talking
about we mentioned yesterday
we'll get to pizza in a minute pizza's a
little bit complicated
um
i mean the pizza itself is not
complicated
how we relate to pizza is complicated
oh cheesecake that's right we ended we
were talking about cheesecake
do you know it's fascinating all the
time that we were learning you know
pasha
learning about pashata siobhan i would
come in and say you know where did we
get to nobody nobody had a clue it was
like no one knew what week it was what
pasta it was but now all of a sudden we
remember yeah we spoke about cheesecake
we spoke about this kind of food we
spoke that kind of food it's interesting
huh so just again in general right what
kind of foodstuffs are we talking about
we're talking about cake we're talking
about biscuits we're talking about pasta
we're talking about couscous we're
talking about crackers and and pretzels
and all those kinds of things
um they don't have a din of being bred
and therefore you need to make them as a
knot over them right now again the the
difference between making them is
they're not making a different kind of a
broker is what bro what after brock are
you going to make we'll talk about rice
in a minute as well because that's also
a little bit complicated yeah
what is the difference
between
the moity and bread in terms of the
majority ingredient is flour
yeah so what what's the i mean the
emphasis is like this it's it's not an
easy it's not an easy answer it's not no
it's not an easy question to answer i
was gonna say not an easy answer to
question but that's not uh
that certainly doesn't make very much
sense although i noticed it didn't
really raise any eyebrows over here so
um
what what turns something from bread
into miss or not right so for example
you know yeast cake
many people make exactly using exactly
the same yeast exactly the same mixture
they'll make bread out of it
and on that you would have to wash but
when it gets turned into yeast cake so
then you just make them as an art
so what's the uh let's have a look and
see right and if we're already here
let's talk about something called
missouri bread
which is uh
a a a creation an invention of our
generation right because we're so
pathetic
mata so again if you're ashkenazi on
matzah throughout the entire year you
say hamoi te la chamina auret you wash
your hands you make kano tilati dai may
kamoiti and you you relate to mata as if
it were bread for you know for
everything uh if you're safari
so except for pesach you make him as a
not over
mata
and uh and you recite alameda at the end
of it instead of writing it in reciting
bicarbonate after broccoli recite um
alamichia and uh but on pesach of course
it's considered to be bread and you have
to wash and you have to make hamas over
it so for the lack of lebanese uh i'll
tell you the truth i'm not 100 sure i
understand what the problem is um
again what what is what is
that's not it doesn't say anywhere that
that bread has to be leavened in order
for it to be bred
right so it's not that's not that's
really not what's defining i mean maybe
it's just the shortness of the whole
process
that brings it into being i don't know
you know being edo i'll try to look into
it and work out what the uh
why why we have these differences of
opinions amongst ashkenazim and this
fardhin
um
disappointing me if they have to make uh
they don't have bread they have two
mothers
i think then you would be able to wash
you would be able to send one to the
menards that wouldn't be very much
different from uh
yeah yeah
um i don't know i don't people don't
really eat mutsu voluntarily do they
that's okay in north america i haven't
seen it
really yeah you know in north america
people do anything that's ridiculous
right they do that
eat matzah voluntarily
when does bread become as an
when does bread becomes or not so here
let's work out the halal concept over
here and then let's work out what's
really going on
um in order for bread to be considered
to be this or not it needs to have added
to it some kind of an ingredient which
is going to either dilute it in a
certain way or make it sweet so
the general
way of making masanot bread is to add
apple juice into it
and if it's got a certain sweetness to
it then that's considered to be ms or
not there are differences again of
opinion amongst the ashkenazim and
amongst the sfardin as to how much is
required in order for this thing to be
miss or not according to the svadin they
are more
uh they're more lenient so just a little
bit of apple juice is enough to turn it
into not for the ashkenazim it needs to
have a sweet taste to it in order for it
to be considered to be ms or not
um
other ways of turning bread intimas or
not is by adding milk which is a problem
it's a problem halachically because
bread which is dairy
needs to look different from regular
bread
the only
places that i know of that add milk into
their dough are normally pizza
parlors
and that's okay because everything is
milk anyway right so you don't have to
be concerned that somebody's going to
use your dough and eat it with a with a
uh with a meat meal because it's coming
out of a dairy establishment anyway
that's another way of being able to make
of being able to make bread into a
mezonas that's one of the reasons why by
the way when it comes to cake and things
like yeast cake that once you start
adding in the ingredients that are going
to turn into something which is sweet
it's not going to be bread anymore even
though the
basic dough is something that you could
use to turn into bread if you wanted to
purim here again right in england they
have a custom which as a kid i used to
adore around purim time they would take
khalas regular colors and they would
coat them with some kind of a sweet
syrup on the top and then and sprinkle
them with hundreds and thousands like
you know colored sprinkles and
which were delicious
not the bread but you know being able to
scoop off the especially my mother
wasn't watching to scoop off the you
know the sprinkles and to eat them with
my finger that was definitely okay they
they are hamoiti because the bread
itself
is bread right in order to turn the
bread into amazonas you have to the the
ingredients have to be added in to the
mixture
right so when you're taking a regular
dough mixture you're taking making
regular bread and then you're going to
coat it with something which is going to
turn into something sweet that's not
changing
the bread itself
when you add it into the ingredients so
then it becomes something which is no
longer considered to be bread and then
you would make them as a knot over it
you do have interestingly enough here in
israel as well
um colors that are baked with raisins
inside especially around rosh hashanah
time but some people eat them all year
round i personally am rather partial to
raisins um
you know
as we
you know get to talk about food over
here you'll begin to realize that uh you
know given the choice between something
which is relatively healthy and
something which is going to be less
healthy i will always choose the less
healthy
option that's why grapes of course are
relatively healthy even though they've
got quite a high sugar content raisins
are reasonably unhealthy because they
are full of sugar and that's why i like
them um
when you add raisins into your dough
right when you want to bake
sweet color
that's okay you're not doing anything to
change the status of the bread itself
you're just adding the raisins in and
the raisins are going to give the
sweetness it's not that you're adding in
enough ingredients over here to turn it
into something which is not
um
do you have to make an eight eight when
you're eating the challah here it's an
interesting thing you know what i should
we touched on this yesterday uh maybe
maybe maybe we should just take off a
minute here and just clarify
you do not have to make an eights over
anything that you would eat together
with bread
right now when you're eating raisin
challah by definition the raisins are
part of the challah and therefore you're
obviously eating them together
i'm trying to think you know i i don't
know if people in here would do this and
if you would i'm not sure that you would
admit to it in public but some people
eat banana sandwiches you know take a
banana and squish it up and and put it
in between bread and then eat it yes i
know i guess i i
i really i should have i should have
warned you before i mentioned this that
it was going to be uh one of these you
know unsavory
bits of information that you really
don't want to know but apparently there
are people out there that eat banana
sandwiches if you were to eat
for us normal people who do not eat
banana sandwiches so if you were going
to eat a banana you would have to make a
boy priyandama over it before you ate it
uh even if you're eating it inside of
the meal for somebody who eats banana
sandwiches so eating banana and bread
together is something that they do and
then they wouldn't need to have to make
a extra broccoli let's say that why
something
no no i'm not
let's say that the son who likes eating
crisps for example he might put crisps
inside his sandwich yeah so what is it
yeah that would have then you would just
make camoy the truth of the matter is
that chris chris which are
what do you call them in america chips
no yeah
the chips are french fries well they
used to be french fries now the freedom
fries
the the uh if you you know
chips or crisps are things which are
generally eaten you know people eat them
inside of a meal anyway
so it's not something that you would
have to make an extra broker over when
you come to eat it even though you've
made ammunition is going to cover the
eating of the of the crisps and the
chips as well
um
however right mizona's bread
or amazonas pizza doesn't matter misonas
rolls whatever they are they are a
creation that has been invented in our
generation because we are so pathetic
that we don't have time to wash our
hands and sit down and eat and therefore
we're going to get around the problem by
having as much bread as we want without
having to wash and
bench because on afterwards of course
like with most of these ridiculous
inventions it doesn't really work like
that the locker is a lot more
complicated than that which means if
you're going to sit down and it's called
in the locker it's called being conveyor
a sooner you're going to sit down and
you're going to make a meal your
intention your intention is to sit down
and have a meal right and you're going
to have them as a knot roll together
with what you've just sat down with or
you can have a mazona sandwich whatever
it is then you have to wash you have to
relate to that as being hamoitse you
have to wash you have to make a moist
oven and you have to bench afterwards as
well a practical ramification of all of
this if you ask me which you didn't but
i'm going to tell you anyway is when you
go on an airplane
um
airplane food and i'm just using that
term generically
i once had an interesting idea that when
the stewardess walks up and down and
says to chicken or beef she's asking you
what it is because she doesn't know
either
but aeroplane food
normally comes with a roll
the kosher food normally comes with a
zonus roll i have a i i personally i
don't think it helps very much
when you get your airplane meal you're
going to be you're going to have a meal
it's a being covered sooner uh i think
you have to get up and you have to wash
if you want to eat if you want to eat
the roll and you have to get up you have
to wash and you have to treat it like a
moist and you have to bench off to us i
don't i don't really
depends what you're eating if you have
if you could make like a
meal
some people say i'm gonna watch but they
have uh chicken or rice
and it becomes a meal yeah i think you
still have the bench no you you know
it is true that inside of our lockers
you've eaten enough
so there is a tad there is an opinion in
that locker which says that you could
you should bench because inside of
mention we say
that i ate and i'm satisfied and if you
wait you are satisfied so there is an
opinion that says that even though you
didn't wash you should bench afterwards
um
to everybody's intense relief that's not
normally the accepted way of doing it so
that you can have an enormous meal and
you can make a quick burn or flush us at
the end and dash out of there without
too many problems yeah
um so for someone who doesn't have
gluten for allergy purpose or some other
purpose right uh then
so they wouldn't ever have to yeah good
question i i have a uh i have a
son-in-law one of my son-in-laws suffers
from
mercy bless you
one of my so my are you allergic to my
son-in-law
what am i
going away
son's in law right one of my son's in
law has celiac
um which means that he can't he he has a
gluten intolerance
during the week he doesn't wash there
are rolls that are made
my daughter makes in roles that are made
out of a special kind of a uh of a
flower
which doesn't have any gluten in it it's
not one of the five
grains that you can make flour with and
you have to wash for which means that he
doesn't uh he doesn't wash on shabbos he
has his his uh his roles are made out of
his i'm trying to remember his roles are
made out of some maybe maybe spelt maybe
huh
because
i'm you know what i can't remember what
it's made out of but it's it's something
yeah right so it's made it's made out of
something that he has to wash for and he
has to bench over
even though it's not the kind of stuff
that that but most people don't use it
um
on pesach
and again because of mata mata is also a
problem
there's special
you know i can't remember whether it's i
can't know whether it's made out of oat
or spelt i can't remember but also
one of those what are those
are you are you gluten intolerant uh
there was a period of time where i
wasn't having having any gluten and i
was getting spelt and i got spelt mud
stuff yeah okay so maybe maybe that's
what it is i don't you look like a
pretty intolerant fellow to me so uh
you know i'm not i'm not surprised to
hear this i'm really not
um
but that yeah so the emphasis like this
that he he eats you know he very rarely
washes during the week
but on shabbos they've got this special
uh special the truth is that
today
you know it's a little bit of an
inconvenience to get to the shops right
but there are shops today that are that
are stocked full of of gluten-free
you know
raw material and baked material
everything you know it's really quite
something it really is
um
you know 20 years ago somebody was
gluten intolerant and they just had to
suffer because there was nothing around
but
again if you ask me i think that
mozona's roles amazonas peter amazonas
bread is a i think it's a little bit of
a cop-out i really do it used to drive
my mother nuts
she says when when i when i was a
teenager this is when these things first
started coming out
she said she used to tell us you know if
you want to sit down and you want to eat
then ben you know wash and bench and eat
but don't don't come along with this
newfangled uh idea of having a something
which looks like a pita smells like a
pizza and tastes like a pizza and just
happens to have a little bit of apple
juice inside of it and therefore you
know it's okay you can get away with it
um i do think that there is a halachic
issue over here as well like i mentioned
before if you're going to sit down and
have a meal then i don't think it helps
you very much to have a mozilla's role
let's hold on a second let's talk about
peter
simply because i noticed that when you
mentioned the word pizza eyes lit up
everywhere
let's talk about pizza if you eat one
slice of pizza you can make amazonis
over it like what is pizza is made out
of a dough it's got a dough base and
then it's got whatever whatever kind of
you know tomato paste and the other
stuff that i put on top of it whatever
kind of toppings you people go for
if you're going to have two slices of
pizza
because of the amount of
of uh dough that's going to be eaten
that's considered to be being covered
sooner you're sitting down and having a
meal now and according to most
authorities you need to wash you need to
make hamoiti and you need to bench after
you've finished eating your two pieces
of pizza
now it is conceivable for some people
over here you might say well two pieces
of pizza is really just a snack for me
um you know it's i don't look at that as
being a meal if i were to sit down and
have a meal of pizza then i would have
four pieces of pizza not two um
and uh if that's the case then you
probably need to ask a question you need
to ask a sheila from from you know
somebody whether if i eat two pieces do
i need to don't i need to wash it's a
kind of a little a little bit of a gray
area over there but under normal
circumstances if you're going to have
two bits of pizza then that's going to
be turned into a meal just something
which red moisture mentioned a couple of
days ago
is uh interestingly enough if you're
going to sit down and you're going to
eat
a large amount of mozonas
and you know
from the beginning that that's what
you're going to do so you've got a great
big bag of pretzels or a great big bag
of crackers and you're going to sit down
and you're going to work your way
through them then you really need to
wash and uh again it's cool you're being
covered even if you're eating nothing
else together with it you're just having
those crackers and you would need to
wash and you would need to bench
afterwards big pack of crisps crisps and
no because chris the broccoli chris is
our dumber
again chips i'm sorry i have to
translate this into american right uh
crisps or chips
and chips are french fries so now
they're freedom fries
chips and fish huh are you english
yes don't you say in english
chips and fish yes they do i i get again
french fries
chips when you're referred to chips
yes those are french fries of course in
england we don't we don't we don't refer
to the french at all
that's a little that's right that's a
it's a little bit of a sensitive issue
over here
yeah patrick you want to tell you
i was you had said something about how
some uh to distinguish between hamodsi
and mizonos the addition of like a
sweetener or something like that
and if this was before you mentioned um
the amount
of pizza that you eat
but you did say that some people
you know see pizza as something that
was
sweetened
in the making of it
with that in mind even if you had two
pieces or more yeah
why does it then no longer because again
what what's what's the problem
risotto is a uh it's a it's a somewhat
difficult thing to define
which means that even though apple juice
has been added into the dough of the
pizza and it means that it really it
means that technically it's amazonas
if you're going to eat enough of it
then that's considered to be turning
what you've just done into a meal and if
it's a meal then you need to make
hamoiti over it
and it's a problem with that with the
mezonas is that it's it's got this like
crossover point where it hasn't it
hasn't changed what you're eating hasn't
changed at all
um again you know take a bag of crackers
if you're going to eat your way through
a whole bag of crackers you need to wash
and you need to need to make a muzzy and
bench even though somebody else comes
along and takes one of those crackers
that might come as onus and that's
that's all they're going to do
let's talk about rice rice is a little
bit complicated rice is something which
grows
however because rice is something which
uh fills you up pretty pretty
substantially unless you go to a chinese
restaurant and then half an hour later
you're hungry again
have you noticed that chinese
restaurants
you know it's interesting um
the don't look at me like that the the
uh
the rice the correct broccoli makeover
rice is normally amazonas we're talking
about rice which has been through some
kind of a process in order to get it
onto your plate whether it's brown brice
whether it's white rice there are
different opinions in the locker as to
whether brown rice is mizonas and white
rice it should be a shahakal because
it's been through such a such a process
that it's no longer it just doesn't bear
the resemblance of what rice once had
however most most uh poison as far as i
know ashkenazi post kim rule that white
rice and brown rice you should make a
misonas over it it could be if i
remember correctly it depends on how
brown rice is cooked depends on whether
it's summers or not or whether it's a
or whether it's hardama i'm sorry not
shahiko um but i need to i need to look
into that what is interesting about
raiso is that the after broker of rice
is not ala mercier
normally when you eat something which is
mesonus so when you make your after
broccoli you make a slightly longer it's
it's sort of like it's it's shorter than
beer katamazon but it's longer than the
barena fashot which is recited for other
things that we eat however when you eat
rice
so the correct after brocco for rice is
going to be
boring fashot and not alaba because it's
it falls in between the cracks it really
isn't this and it isn't that either
right because of the uh
it's kind of difficult to to classify
exactly how we're going to relate to
rice whether it's mozonas or whether
it's not mizonis therefore the after
broccoli is going to be something which
is going to be boring fashot here what
do we do with what we do with
identifiable bits of food we spoke about
this a little bit yesterday right but
identifiable bits of food inside of
other foods
so
for example there is a rather bizarre
dessert in england called summer pudding
which is berries
all kinds of berries mixed together and
cooked together and then it's covered
with slices of bread
now this is england right so this is
considered to be a delicacy
don't ask me why you're supposed to use
white bread because then it soaks in the
color of the berries and it's got a very
nice hue to it it's just it's rather odd
what do you do with something like that
so i think you're supposed to be washing
and making hamoitse over summer pudding
personally i would suggest you don't
bother eating it actually but that's
just my huh
it's really really really rather really
rather odd uh like an awful lot of
english foods what about scones
scones well scums are interesting
actually what are scones scones are
scone
the the
the scones are made from they're made
from a batter and then they are baked
and they normally have sometimes have
raisins inside of them they are sweet
right they're cooked they're cooked it's
not it's not really a bread it's cooked
as some kind of a cake-like substance
again being english it's really rather
odd um
what broccoli should you make of it you
should make them a zodiac silver scones
interesting stuff jacqueline is a
yemenite concoction it is
artery clogging
it is it is a dough that is made with
large amounts of oil very large amounts
of oil and it's then baked there's
enough oil in there to stop it from
being amoity which means you make them
in sony jackman
um
those that have been fried
you do not make a mutilate
over them
huh why
why is that because it's considered to
be it's considered to have changed its
status
right which
from from from hamilton it's no longer
it's no longer it's not no longer
classified as bread in the in the
regular in the
term and it's now turned into something
which has been fried and you would make
them a zona so for it uh again i would
change
the ingredients the ingredients haven't
changed but what you've done with it has
now changed which means in the same way
that if you add enough sweetness into
the dough it becomes amazonic over here
it's no longer considered to be a part
of the hamilti family
even though it looks looks like bread
and that's why there are certain you
know again certain
foods uh malawach
right what is
malawik is really something which a
person should be making hamilti over
it's layers and layers and layers of
dough very thin that have been pressed
together they a lot of oil has been
added in and then they're fried up once
they've been fried up
then you don't have to worry about it
you make a zone is over instead of
making hamoichi over it
um
i do think again
you know in england well i don't know
what's going on today but in england
another bizarre concoction is something
called fried bread they'll take slices
of bread and they'll fry them in butter
and oil
and then they'll add they'll put fried
eggs on top of them and just in case you
know if that were if you were still
alive at the end of all of that then
obviously you haven't done it properly
um well what should you do with
something like that if you ask me i
think you should if you were going to
eat something like that
maybe first choice is not to eat it and
the second choice is i think you need to
wash
find yourself a piece of bread make a
mighty over it and then eat the fried
bread because
it's a little a little bit of a problem
um here an intra interesting halachic uh
an interesting halachic dilemma
croutons
how do you make croutons you take bread
leftover bread and you toast them
normally they're you know if you put
enough oil in them they actually taste
quite good
put some salt on them a little bit of
spices and you can do all kinds of
things with them
what do you do with something like that
so it really depends on interestingly
enough it depends on the status of the
bread that's being used if the bread was
made in order to make croutons
then you make a misonas over them and
you do not make hamoiti over them if
they were just like most croutons they
were left over bread that you want to do
something with them rather than throw
them out they begin to get a little bit
stale and if you you know if you make
croutons then you can turn into
something edible then they retain their
status of being
of hamoiti and you need to wash before
you eat them
with cholent and say i don't know barley
so you're gonna say amazonos but it's
the kind of it's eric's israel croutons
the yellow ones the ones kids go yeah
crazy over i mean kids are crazy here
anyway so that doesn't change anything
does it no
no
uh interesting enough talking about
challenge right challenge is this rather
odd unique
sorry the challenges is rather unique
concoction um
the
reason why we eat chalant is because we
want to prove that we are not karaites
the karaites believed only in the in the
written torah not in the oral torah and
uh one of the things that the written
torah says that you shouldn't kindle any
fire on shabbos according to the karate
according to the the the uh karate
opinion that means that you can't have
any kind of fire in your home you can't
have any light in your home on shabbos
and in order to prove that we are not
karaites we eat we're very careful and
shabbos morning to eat something hot
and that's where the challenge comes
from challenge which according to rashi
is comprised of two french words of
chole which means hot and long
and you know you just take stuff you
throw it into pot whatever whatever
whatever that happens to be on the
kitchen counter that's what gets put
into this thing um
and it just sits there and you know
cooks and cooks and cooks and cooks
and at some point it gets given out in
shabbos morning uh charlotte if you're
eating challenge and you have not washed
so shower this morning maybe you know
what you go to a kiddish right you
haven't gone home yet you haven't made
your suni yet they're serving up
challenge holland's a little bit of an
interesting concoction because it's got
lots of different
broca foods in it that are completely
identifiable
right charlotte nothing nothing
everything just remains as is so you
might have barley in there you might
have potatoes in there you might have
meat in there which means that you're
going to have to fish around and make
three different broccolis over your
challenge because you've got three
different identifiable food stuffs
inside of there
right you know what if you're having
what this fadi version called chamin so
maybe there'll be chickpeas in there as
well which is going to be a fourth a
fourth brocco that needs to be made over
what it is that you're eating but you
would have to make them a zonus over the
barley
you would have to make a hadama over the
potato and you would have to make a
shahakal over the meat
or
any any other you know whatever else
might be in there you know sometimes
people put eggs in their choline or bits
and pieces of who knows what um
again if you given soup
you haven't washed you've been given a
bowl of soup and you put lots you put
lots of mandala inside these little
yellow little
little yellow square things that make
the children go mad um the uh the uh you
they these if you want to know why the
israeli children are mad it's because
until not very long ago these little
yellow squares had uh what's it called
that stuff yellow the yellow food
coloring
sunset yellow that they found that was
uh incredibly unhealthy
um come on you must remember there's no
um
something with a t you know
no
not turmeric
no no no
some kind of some kind of a you know
chemical that they put into it to give
it that beautifully natural fluorescent
yellow look um
and uh that's why the kids were nuts but
uh the food dye yeah yeah i don't i
don't know the name but i know what
you're talking about good okay that's
good because no one else seems to i'm
looking around the room
however if if you are having a bowl of
soup and you've got in your bowl of soup
let's say you're having vegetable soup
right again you're going to run into it
the problem of maybe three brothers over
here
because you've got the brocco that you
have to make them a zonus over the
little the little croutons right you
would have to make hadama over the
vegetables bits of identifiable
vegetable that's in there
right and you would have to make a
charcoal over the liquid
what do you do if the soup has been
liquidized
then you just make a shahakal once you
don't have any identifiable bits of food
in there then you just make a shackle
which we'll talk about in the show when
we get there but that's a generic that's
a generic broker that's recited
that's going to get us off the hook i
always thought you'd make another on a
vegetable soup
so again it depends really does depend
on what it is that you see inside of
there right if it's been liquidized
properly
then you should be making shahakal over
it
if it's if you've got bits of vegetables
in there and it does happen sometimes
when you liquidize the soup then
sometimes certain things just don't get
uh they don't get scrunched up inside of
the liquidizer uh so you've got like a
piece of carrot in there that's
obviously a piece of carrot then you
should make our dummer over the piece of
carrot and you should be making a
charcoal over the soup why is that isn't
there such a thing that when you have an
apple
sitting in water and the water
comes tasting like an apple you're
making eggs
who says that when it comes to fruit
juices so if you're going to drink let's
say fresh orange juice right
so most opinions are that you should
recite shahakal over fresh orange juice
because it's no longer it no longer
bears any resemblance to the fruit that
it was because
has an opinion that if the fruit was
grown in order to make juice
then you should make bori pirates over
the over the over that fruit juice
that's a minority opinion yeah
um so again fruit fresh fruit juices if
you go off to you know you go off into
town and you get yourself a fresh fruit
juice over there something that's
squeezed on the spot
then
under normal circumstances you would
make a shahakal over it because it's no
longer it's no longer the fruit that it
was what about frozen yogurt
what about a frozen yogurt that is still
because it's changed consistency
well yogurt i mean again yogurt in
general yogurt is shahakal so even when
it freezes it remains a shahako
and if you put fruit on top if you put
fruit on top you would have to end up
making two different broccolis over here
i'm always you should know that i'm
always a little bit unsure you get fruit
yogurts today
that have lots of bits of fruit inside
of them
and i think
that it's probably correct to make two
broccolis over it
right one broccoli with a piece of fruit
and one brocco over the
yogurt itself although there are
definitely opinions that say that you
can just make a shihako over the yogurt
the fact that there are bits of fruit in
there is you know just
happens to be
part of the
yeah i don't know it's a again you're
asking you're asking questions which are
a little they're a little bit difficult
to define
um if the fruit is identifiable right
now that does not mean for example
you're having kiwi ice cream now kiwi's
got little black pits inside of it right
little black seeds inside of it which
are edible um if you obviously your kiwi
ice cream is going to have it's going to
be full of little bits and pieces i
don't that for sure is not something
that you need to make a separate broker
over uh if you're talking about i don't
know for example over here in israel a
uh a popular ice cream is vanilla and
cherry ice cream if you've got bits of
cherry inside of the ice cream i think
you have to try to work out for yourself
what over here you know we spoke about
yesterday the ikar and the tefl the
icker is the ice cream with the icker is
the ice cream then you just make a
shahakal over it that's that's why
you're eating it if you are enjoying the
ice cream and you're enjoying the fruit
each as its own then maybe you do need
to make two different broccolis over it
but it's got to be something which is
big enough to be able to identify as
whatever it was that's because if you're
if it's the only kind of ice cream you
eat cherry vanilla that was that the
example
then you would wouldn't you say the
puffle and icker
wouldn't you just say that you would say
it for the icker
that's your preference and it would be a
hiates
period
if that was the only ice cream you ate
you didn't eat chocolate or whatever
i'm not sure but you're still you're
still eating it as ice cream
yeah so the question over here again how
are we going to define what what's the
occur and what's the tefl right would
you would you eat these
i mean i imagine you're eating it
because it's ice cream i i'm not sure
but i i think my my feeling is that you
would for sure you would have to make a
shackle of what you're eating
the question over here is whether you
would have to make eight
as well over the cherries
to try to remember i'll try and look
into it see see what's what i'm
pretty disturbed son by the hamazi
and the zionists only said you're making
something that's fried i don't
understand what is it that changes the
technicality of it's so heat that makes
the dough into something oh it's not
it's not a
it's not it's nothing to do with any
kind of a physical change it's to do
with the halachic change i'm not 100
sure what happens at the the
the oil oil
pattern because the normal way of making
bread
is in the oven and if it's b if it's
going to be if it's going to be cooked
in a different way
then uh maybe yeah maybe that's what
maybe that maybe the baking process is
part of
what is turning this into hermoisi
frying is called
frying is not called baking frying is
called frying
inside of halakha right again i mean
something something that has been
through a frying process is not regarded
in the same way as something that's been
through a baking process
whatever i mean i'll try to bleed or
i'll try to french toast
what is that oh french toast again
what is french says we take a piece of
toast and you soak it in
egg you know beaten up eggs and then you
fry it
um
see a lot of people watch
what's the problem the piece of toast it
still looks like bread
right
and the bread the bread has been baked
already we said bread is something that
you need to make an emoji over
right what you're doing now is you're
adding egg and you're frying it in a
frying pan
i i think you would i think you would
need to wash over french toast as well
yeah again i mean coming coming from
england we we don't eat french toast
because it's got the word french in it's
not
ukrainian i've been yummy don't don't
take this uh
don't take it personally it's just
that's actually really fast
anyway that's the soreness um
at the end of eating amazonics you have
to make the brocco alamicha
interestingly enough there are other
things that you have to make in alameda
over as well there are three different
kinds of foodstuffs that you have to
make they're special after broccoli
one of them is the zonus one of them is
wine if you drink wine then you need to
make instead of making an alamic you
make a lagethe
and the other one is certain fruits that
if you eat them you also have to make an
ally eighth vale pr eights and uh you
see inside of the art school sydney they
explain what what needs to be done um
but it's something to keep keep in mind
right um
if you don't want to make an alamic i
guess you know the uh the moral of the
story is to stay away from fruit
no no the moral of the story is not to
eat the zonus sorry
let's talk about things that grow on
trees
boripia eights that's relatively simple
and i think almost anything that grows
on a tree you have to make a bori priya
eats over it
right fruits
we have there are a few
things which even though they look like
they grow on trees are not body preads
they do not fulfill the criteria of
being trees according to halocha so
bananas banana is a classic example
a banana is considered to be a shrub
according to alocha according to the
criteria uh and therefore when you make
continued banana you should make bori
had a theory at the beginning many many
years ago that chocolate you should make
bori priya eights over chocolate because
it came from the cacao bean and and you
know however he came to the realization
that uh that first of all the
ingredients there's a lot more in
chocolate than just cacao and aside from
that the whole cacao bean itself is not
edible by itself it's got to be it's got
to go through a whole process in order
to be able to do something with it uh
coffee once coffee if you were to eat a
coffee bean
which is very very bitter i don't i
don't know if anyone would actually do
that but if you were to eat a coffee
bean do you know what i'm not 100 sure
what the definition of a coffee
it's probably also a shrub i would have
thought actually i don't think it's a
tree
no again
what's it what's its definition
i don't know
but if if you were to eat a coffee bean
then presumably you would have to make
either a dum or eight depending on what
the definition of the tree is once it's
turned into coffee though
then you make a shahakal over it what
happens if you put lemon in your teeth
for example
a piece of lemon or just lemon juice
lemon juice lemon juice is okay it it
becomes a shahaka you don't have to make
a special brocco over it if you're going
to have lemon tea and you're going to
have a piece of lemon floating around on
the top and you you're going to eat that
piece of lemon as you know many people
do
then at that point you would have to
make our eights on the lemon and
shahakal on the tea
um
yeah are there some other examples you
could give me for like banana
that are there other examples of bananas
yeah that we wouldn't say uh there are
bananas
uh but there are
peanut butter would that be a donut
a lot of people eat bananas with peanut
butter in america yeah yeah it's a
common thing patrick
i don't i don't know where i don't know
where you come from but
everything is now beginning to be clear
and i am prepared to take your testimony
and to
one of those spinning hot chocolate
thingies and you put strawberries inside
the hot chocolate a spinning hot
chocolate you know what i mean
no no you don't have to die
yeah chocolate fountain chocolate
fountain yeah and then you put a
strawberry on the chocolate yeah so i
would suggest like this you you need to
make hardama on the strawberry
and you need to make a shahakal on the
chocolate i think because they both of
them are as delicious as each other
um cranberry is from a tree restaurant
cranberries are complicated uh there are
different opinions according a different
uh
a lot of berries are complicated
actually uh blueberries
it's not 100 different different
opinions inside of unlocking whether you
make a 8 or whether you make our dhamma
over it
um
what do you do when you're not sure so
actually there's an interesting little
bit of a locker over here that if you're
not sure whether something is our eights
or whether it's our diamond you can make
our dhamma over it because the tree
grows out of the ground anyway
which means that your
what's the idea when you make the
broccoli you're trying to make the
broccoli as exact as possible
so when you're eating something that
grew on a tree it's boripia eights and
that's as that's as exact as the
broccoli can get
but if you're not sure
then you can make a body pierdoma you're
just it's like one step before it's like
one step in the process before having
got to the tree the tree itself is
growing in the ground
and you can make our dhamma over it i'm
trying to think if there are other uh
avocado
is also hard armor what avocado they're
growing trees trees
they grow in trees they grow on trees
avocado trees uh and yet again because
of the it's it's to do with the way it's
to do with how they produce their fruit
how often they produce their fruit um
avocados are also high dumber i i'm
trying to think i'm not sure that i can
think of you know one thing
i was brought up that way
the uh stalks of the sugar cane yeah
that you used to take so that i think
you should make harder over there
yes
because you would take the
stuff and it was good it's sweet
excellent yeah also
tomatoes and the coconut yeah you get it
from the trees yeah there's juice inside
yeah
so here what do you do with coconuts
coconuts they've got the they've got the
coconut itself and there's coconut milk
inside if you're going to drink the milk
you need to make a charcoal over it
you make it you make a blooper eight
over the coconut over the fruit
but the juice inside
because it's a separate entity
why
it's not squeezed like you squeeze
something out of order because it's
it's something which exists i mean it
exists
you can't say
yeah you can't you can't you can't say
that it exists without the coconut
because obviously it needs the coconut
to be in there but the it need it what
it's a liquid right
which means that it takes on it takes on
the brocco of a liquid as opposed to the
brocco of the coconut itself
right so if you again you know we used
to have coconuts from time to time and
uh if you uh
if you eat the coconut itself you make a
burpier eights and if you're gonna drink
the milk out of it then you need to make
a shackle over it yeah you know when
you've come back
way further when you make a record you
won't be thinking
oh wow good question okay well what are
you supposed to think about when you're
making a broker you're supposed to be
thinking of the fact that our college
balcony brought this for you to be able
to eat
i once asked my rebbe how does one how
do you know brokers are things that you
say every day right you say them all day
every day how does one how do you retain
a sensitivity to
what you're doing you know
see people sometimes that the things
already in their mouth they haven't even
finished the brother yet it's already
you know in there um so he said
something very interesting i've used
over the years it's something which is
very simple and it works very well just
take off a nano second before you make
the broker and look at what you're
making the broker over just to have a
sense of appreciation that's all you
look at that apple and you you think you
know ah okay and then you come back then
you're ready to make the brother
yeah yeah sorry pleasure that
you're
looking at
you're making you're making a broker
over the fact that you're about to eat
it
right um
tomorrow if you remind me we'll talk
about the the the time when you don't
make a broker over something
but under normal circumstances because
you're about to eat this thing you're
going to make a broker the pleasure that
you have
and the pleasure that you get from
looking at it and the pleasure that you
get from from the taste of it is a
what's called a ma
nam it's something that was given to us
by cottage volkl for free
in order for us to enjoy the experience
right again like we spoke about
yesterday the day before about oranges
that
you know the oranges we eat oranges
because they taste great right and we
get a lot of pleasure you get a lot of
pleasure from looking at oranges because
they look beautiful right um but the you
know the goodness that the orange is
giving us is really that's what we need
the vitamins and the minerals that could
contain inside of the orange aquarius
bulk made these things look good in
order for us to want to eat them
i'm sorry you want you were waving your
hand around before no we're out of time
oh it's okay you can see we're not
paying any attention to that
why um
why do we do show call on uh certain
liquors like um like plum brandy but we
do uh
it's on wine i mean it's still a album
we make a berry pie giffen on wine
not not at eight right it's true that
under normal the real question over here
should be the other way round
right which means that the real question
over here is not why do we make
shahakal on on alcohol on liquors
and why do we make sure we should ask
you why do we make butter pie gift over
wine
if something if something is a liquid
normally you make shahakal over it it
would make more sense to make sure i
call over a wine than to make her eights
over plum liquor um and i see that you
you chose immediately one of the most
you know explosive uh liquors around
right sliverbits is like you know 500
proof or something you can run your car
on it
um and the answer is we spoke about the
other day that the gemara says it
because wine is something that's got its
own designation because it's something
very special it's something which
elevates it gives us it gives us
pleasure it gives us joy uh it's also
something which was used inside of the
temple it was brought as libation
offerings therefore there's a special a
special brothel which is recited over
wine which is not recited over regular
liquors
however my my uh
my mother said that when they were kids
growing up
so on pesach they used to go to a hotel
the whole family the extended family
there were lots and lots and lots of
them my mother said that she had an
uncle who used to start off his day
every day with a a glass of whiskey
not a shot
a glass
not on pesach on pace like he suffered
terribly because you can't drink whiskey
so my my uncle the first year that he
was in yeshiva he was in montreux in
switzerland and he came back with a
bottle of sliver bits for this uncle to
give it to him
and my mother said that the first that
first peter the whole hotel was woken up
in the morning by hearing this fellow
screaming his head off he's trying to
kill me
i'm going to die
because slytherin is how you know
however strong whiskey is it's like
twice as powerful and he took his
regular you know his regular amount just
knocked it back and uh
so i'm pleased to see that you went
straight for the straight for the real
stuff the man stuff right
my family loves
you
