[Music] my name is rabbi Daniel Chandra I'm the licensed Marriage and Family Therapist base here and around the world via Skype each week we answer important questions dealing with family therapy dating relationships psychology and even addiction this is the third video on a series of internet and cell phone addiction today we'll be dealing with the serious implications of full-blown addiction to know if you're a real addict refer to the second video on the series about addiction assuming that you understand that you're addicted what can you do about it now friends let me tell you something extremely important a person is a true addict be using the internet 5 10 15 hours a day it's going to interfere with their life it's going to cause them financial loss that are going to get in trouble at work they're going to get in trouble from their employer they're getting in trouble from their spouse it's going to have a detrimental impact on the quality of their life it's going to start running their lives everything is going to be resolving around their internet or cell phone addiction however if you feel you're addicted the most important thing to realize that perhaps you've actually lost your free will at this point an addict is a person that has a disease of the will there's nothing necessarily wrong or evil about them but they've lost their will in this disease to overcome this powerful force which is running your life so friends the first thing you need to do is to admit that you're powerless over your addiction Viktor Frankl a great psychiatrist once said a person cannot reach behind this head and pick himself up higher he therefore said you need something higher than yourself to get yourself out of the predicament please understand this point if you're really addicted to the Internet you might have lost most of your free will you're feeling a sense of powerlessness and you have to reach up to cutters bark with to God and ask him please God help me help me overcome this tremendous addiction I'm facing I can't do it alone I need you to be there with me at every moment in my life to get out of this that is the first step towards overcoming your addiction understanding and most importantly admitting that you're in a state of addiction and reaching out for something greater than yourself for help the next thing you need to do is to envision yourself not alone anymore but now that you're connected to a cutter Sparkle you've asked him for help now you need to do his will in this world we are simply saying we are simply representatives of God in this world we are only here to fulfill his will not our own when we face addiction if God's will is that I shouldn't be addicted and I shouldn't be looking at inappropriate material if that's his will I am here only to fulfill God's will in this world that is my higher purpose in fact the implication means I have to experience a sense of be tool a sense of nullification of myself there's something greater than myself and carry out his will in the world when I understand that I am carrying out God's will in this world I become an agent of godliness in this world therefore when I'm overcoming addiction I'm also experiencing a powerful sense of spirituality in the world what is spirituality other than understanding that I represent something greater in this world that meaning God and I'm going to carry out God's will in this world through my behavior to summarize the two most important things to overcome addiction number one recognize your addiction your helplessness and your powerlessness and from the addiction number two reach out to God ask him for help and become his representative in the world making his will your will bringing his will into this world carry what he wants from you friends he wants you to be healthy he wants you to feel good about yourself he wants you to choose good and you'll be doing so when you put down the internet you put down your cell phone when you reach a sense of sobriety you'll experience a state of serenity and calmness and enjoyment perhaps something more than you've ever experienced in life even before your addiction welcome to this new series and he's a brute called marriage matters my name is rabbi Daniel Shama and I'm a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in New York and around the world we learn on this important series I will be answering your questions we have about marriage relationships dating parenting and about any issue during the family relationships but more than what I have to say I want to hear what you have to say so please email to this address and send in your question and I'll try to answer as many questions on this Michelle [Music]
