There's something profoundly optimistic about accountability before God. In any task in life, if you succeed, there's a certain outcome that brings blessing. If you fail, there's a certain outcome that you have to deal with the consequences. If you're doing something where whether you succeed or fail, it makes no difference. Then actually what you are doing has no meaning. If you're playing a friendly game where it doesn't matter who wins or loses, that takes the edge of the competition out of it. And if there's any task which you're doing where it actually makes no difference whether you succeed or fail then you have to ask yourself do I have to even do anything? And if I do well does that mean anything? If I do badly it means nothing. So therefore what I do means nothing. By being held accountable where success means something and failure means something.
