we have a debate online RAB Manis Freedman says all the time that God needs us and RAB mrai and other rabbis respond by saying how dare you say God needs us that's heresy heresy to say that God needs us what can you do for God according to this approach nothing you can't do anything for God because God is infinite and God doesn't need you and God existed before there was a world and he was perfect then and even though he created a world he's perfect now so there's nothing you can do for God is what can you give God nothing that's their approach and on the other side RAB manman says that and other rabbis say that it's that yes you can do for God who are the RAB on the other side by the way because it's very it's presented in a very unbalanced way because when you hear the the lectures from the rabbis that say it's heresy to say that God needs us so you think it's it's like a already like who's dumb enough to say that that that God needs us but the answer is who are the rabbis that that imply in their writings that God does need us there's a verse that says give strength to God make God strong now does that not imply some kind of need now it's true we must in a mature way understand what that verse is really telling me and if I walk away with a childish understanding of that verse so then I might have the wrong ideas in my head but if a verse says make God strong help make God stronger how can you not be allowed to say that God need us in some way and I'm here to hopefully explain what it means in a mature way but certainly that verse is a very big obstacle for any Rabbi that wants to say that it's heresy to say that God need us because the verse that's telling us to give strength to God to new o elim to say that saying that God needs is heresy is a big is a big exaggeration and the truth is it's it's it's a it's a result of ignorance ignorance on the part of teachers that are teaching the wrong ideas and it's also on a bigger result is the ignorance of the people listening because we have to gauge anyone that wants to teach has to gauge how and what to teach based on how much the person he's teaching knows and so the truth is that Rabbi mrai and the others that say that it's not appropriate to say such a thing and even go so far as to say it's heresy so there is a some truth to that the truth is this that really God doesn't need anything from us that is true the apparent needs that it seems like God has in the way the world was created like this verse that says give God strength there's another teaching from the rabbis on another verse that says you have weakened the the rock that we have made God's power in heaven weaker with our bad deeds and we make God stronger with our Good Deeds Jewish philosophy says that when does it the saying that God needs something uh Break The Rules so to speak of of of our faith break the principles of faith that would be in the category of heresy if it attributes a deficiency to God now God being infinite cannot be deficient in any way he doesn't lack anything so what does it mean that that God needs something from us so if God chooses to want us to do something for him and only us to do it and and in sort of an un limited sense because it is God's will that we provide this for him so he so to speak needs us to do it so that's not a contradiction in his in being infinite and his being perfect and not lacking anything because it's his own choice to want us to provide that for him he could provide it for himself and therefore it's it doesn't mean he's missing anything if I could get my own cup of coffee and I allow you to get your cup my you get me a cup of coffee so you've done something for me okay very simple that's that's that's that's that's the most basic basic answer is that when speaking about God who doesn't really need what we are providing because he could provide it for himself and it's his choice to create a system where these are things that he want wants and needs from us so it doesn't contradict his omnipotence his his perfectness that he's perfect and that he doesn't have any deficiencies and so it's not uh it's not heresy okay now a deeper answer to this I believe it's deeper because cabala really is offers us the deepest wisdom is this there's a general problem and the Jewish philosophers have had a huge problem if God is infinite then he's nothing he can't be he can't be limited so infinite can't be limited and limited can't be infinite so how do we Define God as um kind how do we Define God as uh a judge as a Punisher how do we Define God in any of the attributes we give him the Divine attributes how can we limit and package God in any kind of package how can we give him any kind of title or any kind of name it's impossible he's infinite so the early philosophers came up with a little bit of a of a way to solve that problem is he is and isn't really these things cabala I believe gives us a a more truthful answer because it's the wisdom received from the prophets and from from from from Hashem it's the deeper secrets of the Torah cabala says that there's Hashem himself so to speak there's God's Essence and God's Essence is above creation and uh the language of some of the cabalists is the the master of of the of the will to create meaning there's God had a will a desire to create and it's that will that was manifest in creation but then there's the a level above the manifestation of the Divine will to create is God himself that was before this will even existed it was God and so that level of of Hashem so to speak is above and beyond description it's above and beyond connection and it's above and beyond any type of need or even the type that we say is a kosher type to attribute to God on this highest of levels it's it's it's just wrong and I don't know if you would Define it as heresy it's it's just wrong because that level of of divinity that level of of God himself doesn't need anything and it's that level that some verses in the Torah and tanak are speaking about when it says for example there's a verse a famous verse and this is really the base famous verse that tells us that God doesn't need anything from us is if you did righteousness if you do a Mitzvah what in fact do you give God the implied answer to that question is nothing and so that verse we have to understand what is that verse relating to what God so to speak I mean before we even talk about do God is what is God who is God if I don't understand who God is and what God is that this is a pointless discussion because I'm still on a very basic level of understanding that lacks maturity and lacks depth so let's actually understand who and what God is before we could talk about if he needs anything from us and if we and how do we love him so let's start with who God is so we started God in in his Essence which is above everything is unreachable unattainable the cabala says the zor says that a DOT a DOT cannot cannot represent God on the level of his Essence because nothing can he's that's beyond Beyond any discussion we can't talk to that level of God we can't Define it we can't describe it we can't do anything a name because there is no name that can quantify this level of God so we just say what can you give him it's an indirect reference to because he's above names and the answer is nothing okay and so on Merit so we give strength to the attribute of Mercy to push off the attribute of judgment and Punishment and be merciful to us this a basic he says it in a few places he actually explains the whole splitting of the sea was exactly this a beautiful per of the splitting of the sea or of course we can't make such things up he says that the whole splitting of the sea this is what really happened develop a now a a better understanding of God to to appreciate when and how we say that God needs us what is it referring to so now let's look at this second per so till now we said that God on his Essence doesn't need anything from us and we can never give him anything but God when he created the world created the world and decided that I want to have a connection with the world I create so how does infinite reach finite it's a very it's a it's it's a non-starter infinite reach finite a bigger well infinite can do anything but finite reach infinite is a non-starter and how does infinite reach finite so infinite does not reach finite in a state of infiny God contracts and limits his Divine manifestation and Revelation and creates a bridge where we can connect and it's on that level where the Divine names begin to exist and this in cabala is the 10 in the world of and this is a realm of divinity this is a realm called godliness and so now we are going to make a very simple distinction there's God and godliness okay God himself is beyond reach godliness this is where what we're in fact reaching when it says that God needs help from us or wants help from us we're speaking about Divine manifestation godliness the way godliness is revealed in the created Realms but then there's above that there's God himself and so the answer is God needs us and God doesn't need us so the word god g o d which is a translation of the name yud yud and hey and V and hey so that yeah yud the God's holy name of yud and which represents a Divine attribute of Mercy is affected by our actions the higher level isn't so the actual term God needs us fits better on the level of divine manifestation than on his Essence and here's where we're going to come to Ultimate Clarity the mistake being made in the lack of communication and the lack of the two sides making peace is that obviously RAB Manis Freedman who is a very big understands that God in his Essence doesn't needan anything saying that when it implies that God doesn't need anything from us it's talking about God's Essence and when it implies that God needs something from us it's talking about the revelation of of godliness in the world and that's his solution and that's our solution right now but just to defend the the approach that that says that it's kosher to say that God needs us it actually fits better why because when you say the word God that doesn't mean his Essence that's already a name and the zor and K cabala says clearly explicitly that you cannot Define God's Essence with a name with even a letter not even a DOT and so the word god means godliness it doesn't mean God's Essence to refer to God's essence you have to emphasize God's Essence God above creation if I don't make make those specification specifications then the assumption is I'm speaking about a revelation of of godliness and Divinity within creation and so that's then it's correct so who's more correct in this argument ultimately it's the side that's saying that yes you can say that God needs us because that's a level of Revel and manifestation that's a limited revelation of of godliness and so to say emphatically that it's heresy and there's no other way to look at it if you say God needs you it's heresy it's actually wrong because that word God doesn't represent God's Essence but you're referring to God's Essence and you're right if you would be and so both sides needs to clarify more what they're really saying and why they're saying it and we would have Shalom and I'll just B with the help of Hashem say it right now and clarify it the the the the side that's saying that it's heresy to say that God needs us is because they're defining God as God's Essence which is above creation and that's a my that's not an accurate definition because that level we've been told from cabala sources that is not represented by a name not a not a Divine name not any name not an attribute and not even a symbol so so to say that God needing us as heresy because God in his Essence doesn't need us is not matching the terminology correctly you want to say it say ultimately absolute truth God's Essence which is Essence above and before creation and before he had this desire to create on that level of God there is no way to connect no way to talk to no way to even symbolize what that level is and certainly on that level there's God doesn't need anything from us but once God decided to create and within creation he decided to manifest godliness an aspect of himself a divine revelation the light of the infinite once he created that whole system on that level and even the holy names yud k v k and Elohim on that level it's correct to say that God needs our participation our input our Good Deeds certainly and if both sides would explain it properly we see they're not even arguing they're really saying the same thing and they agree with each other except one point there's not an agreement on to say that it's heresy that what they're saying is wrong there's no other way to define that and now you think I have a big mouth and where's my SM so it's in the mail the answer is that yes I I'm
