Because these products are often essential, the OU takes a uniquely careful approach-conducting extensive research to ensure they’re appropriate for Pesach, even without an OU-P. Check the OU Guide to Pesach for a full list of acceptable products, and reach out to [email protected] with any questions.

The OU guide for Pesach has a page on infant
formula, nutritional, and dietary supplements.
OU certification requires that all ingredients
have to be certified. The OU does not rely on
nullification, bitul, to give a hechsher. Rav
Moshe says, Mechuar ha-davar. It's not a good
thing to give hashgacha based on bitul, based on
nullification. But when it comes to nutritionals,
the OU is faced with a quandary. There are
many people who live on these products. It's
necessary for a person's survival. It's very
difficult to arrange for all of the ingredients
to be certified for Pesach. That is the one
and only time the OU relies on bitul. Now,
we do not put the OU-P on it, as a matter of
policy. We check them very carefully. We do a lot
of research into the progeny of each ingredient,
where they are sourced from. We make sure that
in the event that it may have chametz, it's going
to come in an under bitul proportion until we are
comfortable listing it this page. It's the result
of hundreds of hours of work by many rabbonim here
at the OU to make sure that those nutritionals and
baby formulas that are necessary for a person's
survival, a person to thrive, are acceptable and
allowed for Pesach. If you have any questions,
you can call the hotline or send in a question
to [email protected], and we'll be happy to look
into a product further or give you some
background information if it is necessary.
