The Heiliger Chasam Sofer
used to say over this story
every beginning of the Zman.
A story that happened with him when
he was a young Bachur,
and he learned by his great Rebbe,
the Heiliger R' Nosson Adler z"l.
And one day, R’ Nosson asked him,
"Moishele, please come with me.
We're going on a journey."
They went on a wagon, a chariot,
and they started traveling.
And finally, they came to another city,
next to a river, a lake,
and a very handsome-looking tall man
came towards them, and stopped,
and said Shalom Aleichem to R’ Nosson,
שלום עליכם רבי ומורי
Where are you heading?"
R' Nosson replied, "I'm coming to visit you."
The Talmid said, "Beautiful,
I'd love to have Rebbe in my house.
Please make yourself comfortable.
I have a meeting which
I have to be there
for a couple of minutes.
As soon as I'm done,
I’m coming back,
and we'll spend time together."
R’ Nosson said,
"Absolutely not happening.
You’re coming with me,
and I need you right now in your house."
And he was begging
his Rebbe that he can’t,
and R’ Nosson Adler told the
Heiliger Chasam Sofer, “Moishele,
Please grab his hand,
and bring him onto the wagon."
And he did,
and they headed to the home of
this Rav.
They went there, and R’ Nosson
told Moishele, the Chasam Sofer,
"Please lock the door behind you."
And this man, the host,
was crying and begging
his Rebbe, R’ Nosson,
"Please, I need to be someplace.
You can't lock me up!"
And R’ Nosson said,
"Moishele, hold onto the door knob.
Don't let him out."
After half an hour, the Talmid fell
to the feet of his Rebbe, R’ Nosson,
started crying,
and said, "Rebbe, I was going to
do a terrible Aveirah,
and because of you, you saved my life.”
And R' Nosson replied to him,
responded and said,
"That's exactly why I came here.
I knew exactly what was going on.
I know you’re a Tzaddik,
you’re a Gaon,
you’re a big Talmid Chacham,
you’re a big Marbitz Torah.
But I knew that you were
having a Nisayon,
and I came here to save you.”
So the Chasam Sofer said:
This is what it means
What does it mean שעות הרעות, evil times?
It means a weak moment.
Hashem should save us when
we have a weak moment,
when we listen to the Yetzer Hara.
May the Ribono Shel Olam help all of us,
that we should all be safe,
מן השעות הרעות,
from those weak moments.
And we all have Nisyonos, no matter what age,
no matter what background we are from,
whatever job you have.
If you’re a Rav, you’re working in מלאכת הקודש,
or in an office,
or you're a Bachur in Yeshiva,
or you're a girl in seminary. Wherever it is.
We all have Nisyonos,
may Hashem help us all!
