last year I had the privilege of
bringing 25 guys to South Africa we had
the most amazing time
we got to camp out in Kruger National
Park
[Music]
with hyenas surrounding our tents at
night
[Music]
thank you
it's going down baby
we got the bungee jump one of the
highest bungee jumps in the world
[Music]
we backpacked for four days across the
drakensberg to reach Azula Village
[Music]
hospitals
[Music]
let's go
[Music]
we got to experience how the Zulu people
live
[Music]
I understand
yo let's go
[Music]
and we even got to pet Cheetos
[Music]
but that's not what I'm here to talk
about today
[Music]
what I'm here to talk about
is The Shanty towns of South Africa
or in American terms
the slumps
61 percent of South Africa lives in
poverty that's about 36 million people
21 of the people don't have enough food
to put on the table
it's sad just thinking about it but I
really felt I had to see it for myself
[Music]
thank you
one of my friends somehow found two tour
guides that were willing to bring us
through two of The Shanty towns their
names were guguletu and langa
[Music]
foreign
the people of The Shanty towns work very
hard to make a living
many only make the equivalent of two
dollars a day
[Music]
getting video footage can be very
challenging because people aren't used
to having a camera in their face
in their eyes it can look like you're
judging them
good we're taking a tour
the solution
tangerines
giving a small gift is a great way to
break any tension and to show that
you're really a friend
[Music]
foreign
[Music]
there is no running water in the shanty
towns
all water must be filled up from pipes
in the center of town and then carried
back to their houses by bucket
this is how they take a bath yeah
from that one wow
you're crazy
[Music]
hello
you're gonna show us your house
[Music]
okay come
Andy we're going to see his house
[Music]
Mommy
that's yours
This Is Us yeah
oh wow
oh my gosh
seven people live in this room
our next step
the orphanage
26 children live in this one small room
two to three children per bed
[Music]
this is the orphanage mother she cares
for each child as if it's her own
food rations are provided to the
orphanage by the government
jeez
I was so surprised how happy the kids of
the orphanage seemed to be
and then some of them
and then she would sleep there with all
the smaller ones I think there's like
three of them
so they're gonna keep coming from school
they're starting to come back from
school
completely outside if you pay close
attention you'll notice that when we
give people tangerines they cut both
hands together and receive it with both
hands
[Music]
this is a sign of humbleness and
gratitude in South Africa
all right Matthew
[Music]
you may notice that many of the kids are
wearing very nice clothing
much of this is due to private donations
which are sent into The Shanty towns
next up oh yeah the schools
the government in South Africa provides
free schooling for the people in The
Shanty towns over the course of our
visit we saw many of the schools some of
them were extremely run down
[Music]
others were much nicer
we made sure to leave tangerines
by each and every kid
this is the school bathroom or should I
say outhouse
this is the school water fountain
hello
and this is the school kitchen is this
for lunch today yes yes very nice what's
for lunch
in this small tiny room they cook
hundreds of meals for the kids every
single day okay
why you should open that restaurant I
want to eat that's a lot of food Eric
guide explained to us that a teacher in
the shanty towns needs to play three
roles
a teacher a parent and a therapist
unfortunately due to the tremendous
poverty that exists in the shanty towns
home is not always safe as there's a lot
of abuse that goes on
so school is not just School
is a safe place
a place where kids can go to get away
from all of their problems where they
could feel safe and laugh and play
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
the children of the shanty towns take
School very seriously
[Applause]
in their minds getting a good education
can be their only ticket out into the
real world
[Music]
and here is kosa that clicking sound
that you hear every once in a while is
actually part of a language
[Music]
many of the lessons in school involve
either song or dance
[Music]
song and dance are a very big part of
the culture in South Africa
[Applause]
[Music]
these little dogs
[Music]
you said here
each classroom can have up to 50
students
in this classroom the principal asked
the kids if they could put on a mini
talent show for us
[Music]
say hi
I'm from New York America
I'm from Toronto Canada
I'm from Los Angeles
yeah Spiderman
Spider-Man
[Applause]
[Laughter]
[Applause]
then it came time for me to show them a
thing or two
you ready yes
[Music]
oh
my God
[Applause]
this is a privately funded musical
program for the children in Google
record
thank you
[Music]
after school was let out we gave out as
many tangerines as we possibly could to
the children
[Music]
excitement
for something so small
in America what it takes to get a child
really excited
is a 500 PlayStation or a one thousand
dollar phone
but here in the shanty town
I was seeing that same amount of
excitement
from getting a tangerine
I walked out of the shanty towns
learning a lesson that I'll never forget
that more
is not more
I saw a lot of people with no phones no
movies no PlayStations and yet I
couldn't help but think to myself that
they actually look happier this way just
being together talking working laughing
playing real life relationships
they don't have much
but what they do have
is each other
and at the end of the day
isn't that
what really counts
[Music]
even
with my evolution
[Music]
three two one action subscribe
crossovers go ahead yeah
[Music]
