Emmy-winning actress Debra Messing sits down with Hillel Neuer to explore what it truly means to find — and own — her Jewish voice. From childhood memories and Hollywood pressures, to online backlash and public advocacy, Debra opens up about why she speaks out, how her relationship to Judaism has evolved, and what courage looks like in a time of rising antisemitism. Guided by Hillel’s global perspective, the discussion becomes a powerful reflection on identity, responsibility, and the cost — and necessity — of showing up as a proud Jew in the public eye. 🎙️ Hillel Neuer & Debra Messing Mental Health • Faith & Community Join the Movement. From a very young age, I knew that
people did not like me and it was
because we were Jewish. I think I was
like 11 and my grandfather was visiting
over Halloween and um someone painted a
swastika on his car. Parents had to sit
me down and say there are people who
don't like us and it's not for any
reasonable reason. I knew I was an other
before I knew what an other was. I just
got back from Israel. Oh yes. Um, it was
stunning to me just the joy that I
encountered everywhere I went. When I
walked into the the the shook in Tel
Aviv and there was dancing and singing
and, you know, it wasn't even Shabbat.
They just, it just was, it just made me
realize how vitally important
that Jewish joy is to our survival and
our resilience. And it probably makes
our enemies really angry.
It's like, you do your thing. We're not
going anywhere.
