That we're always balancing. We're
always balancing.
In our avodas in our own in our own
avodas Hashem and in avodas hachinuch,
which is the balance between
having
expectations, believing in people,
believing people can accomplish big
things. Right? You want people to You
want to believe in talmidim. You want to
believe talmidim can accomplish big
things. And you want to set expectations
not just You could You could be great.
You know what I'm saying? We want people
to see and we want to give talmidim the
space to grow into that on their own.
And it's a very hard balance. I believe
in chinuch a very very hard balance to
one set the bar high and and and and
have that expectation in in a healthy
positive way. We We expect big things
from you.
And to give talmidim the space to grow
into that at their pace, at their time,
in the right way. It's It's like It's a
constant balance that I think every
mechanech every mechanech and every
sheer and every yeshiva, again, in
different ways is balancing and and
dealing with. And I think that um for me
personally um
for me personally, what I've gained from
Reb Keilich um and I think what we're
all going to gain in the next few
minutes together and I want to just
frame the moment um
is that unspoken tension between
being real, right? Being real, being
real to who you are and also you you
there there things we do, right? There
things that we do. We We show up and we
we accomplish and so we do things.
But there's there's this feeling of
being very real. And I think for Reb
Keilich um
for all of us has has really uh
has really brought to light the
importance of this feeling of being
real, of being a real person and being
very, you know, true to who we are and
at the same time balancing that with the
expectations of life and the and the and
the day in day out um you know, pieces
of life and the grind a little bit of of
life. Being able to do both I think is a
really important avoda and we're we're
really really privileged and we we we
brought you all here
because we think it's uh it's very
worthwhile to have a few minutes
together with Rabbi Kanievsky to learn
from him, to learn with him,
and to and to grow together. So without
any further ado, please Rabbi Kanievsky.
Thank Rabbi Great Shower. Thank you.
>> [applause]
>> Firstly, thank you Rabbi Great Shower
for your kind words. Thank you for
bringing the Yeshiva here. I feel I
I should come to the Yeshiva, to the
Robin. I'm very, very grateful, but it's
Kedai to be in Rabbi Willig's presence
and to be in the Yeshiva of South
Florida. I thank Rabbi Willig for
hosting and I want to express I was
Zoche a few weeks ago. There was
something came up in the city of
Waterbury and I was asked they needed
Rabbi Willig's help.
And my father and Rabbi Willig were
close, close friends for 60 years.
For over 60 years. They They were first
cousins and very, very close friends.
And I was Zoche the community had a need
in Waterbury and I was asked could you
ask Rabbi Willig? He was flying to Eretz
Yisrael.
He lives like a youngster, but he's not
He's the biggest youngster, but not in
age.
And he was going to Eretz Yisrael and
his schedule's crazy busy and they
needed an emergency time with him.
And they were struggling. Somebody had
called. He wasn't available. He was
flying to Eretz Yisrael with a lot of
his friends with him before. I called as
my father's son and he said in a second
come over to my house.
So I went with some Rabbonim of
Waterbury to to meet with Rabbi Willig.
And
Rabbi Willig that Rabbi Kanievsky
brought to us Rabbi Yehuda Willig's
father and Mordechai Willig is Rosh
Yeshiva of Waterbury. So I think some of
you might be confused. That's why I
>> to Thank you. Thank you for clarifying.
>> Thank you. I want to express like being
in your father's presence. First of all,
I felt my father, my own father. We're
very, very close friends and two
extremely big people.
He has a glow, a shine Rabbi Willig of a
person who spent his life learning Torah
and teaching Torah. To be in his
presence was so beautiful and
comfortable and unforced and majestic. A
Yid who has learned and taught Torah his
whole life.
The humility, the kindness. I went with
a Rav who knows Kol HaTorah Kulah. You
know, I went with a Rav who was Kol
HaTorah. In the car ride home, most of
the discussion was about being in the
presence of Rabbi Wallerstein. About
just being in such a person's presence.
So, I want to express coming to Rabbi
Wallerstein as a cousin.
The word the titles like second cousin,
fifth cousin. I wish that we were more
in touch. Being with his father, I'm
happy to sit next to you now. That this
like it's I'll tell you a funny story
like second cousin. Somebody came to the
Chozeh of Lublin.
Somebody came to the Chozeh of Lublin
and they wanted in with the great Rebbe.
So, they said to the Chozeh, "I'm a
cousin."
And he said a line, "Vaitens fun
vaitens." Which means from a distance.
Like a distant relative. Like calm down,
you're a fifth cousin. Calm down. From a
vaitens." So, one of the
Somebody who was friends with the Chozeh
told the Yid when the Chozeh is davening
Shmoneh Esrei, say like, "Okay, I've run
this
He said what we I'll show you the okay,
I've run."
And you we speak about Avos. So, say
from vaitens. Like you're a distant
relative. You're a great, great, great,
great, great grandson from vaitens. And
he like whispered to the Chozeh from
vaitens. And the Chozeh like felt like
the most certain after Shmoneh Esrei was
mikarev the Yid. Like, "You're my
cousin."
I'm not in the I don't care sixth
cousin. We're cousins. Rabbi Wallerstein
and I are brothers. It's not It doesn't
describe enough. I wish I'm not in
touch. Like we were zocheh in summers to
be near each other. We we working there.
I wish we like to schmooze and meet each
other more more personally and talk. I
can say that being in the presence of
his father
Yiddis one of the great lights of our
generation, really a beautiful light of
Torah, of Avos Yisroel, of Avos Hashem,
of everything that's precious. It was
like it was incredible to be in the
warmth, the the intelligence, the
the just the beauty of the Yiddis like
who's serving Hashem in a beautiful way.
And honor to be in Rabbi Willig's
Yeshiva, this Rabbi Willig's Yeshiva
who's who's a Hemshech, brought Torah
Davoin, who's a Talmud Chochom Muflah.
And what he's doing, what I hear is
going on, I was so excited I'm hanging
with Mendel today.
And he was describing Mendel was
describing what what Rabbi Willig is
bringing here. Ashreichem, Ashreichem, a
welcome to all the guys. The truth is
that I prepared Divrei Torah to say and
I just sat down and while I I asked
Mechila, I was listening to Rabbi
Greisman, he was he was making me feel
good, so I was definitely listening, but
I just saw question four. I want to
forget any Divrei Torah I was going to
say and I need to talk about question
four. I didn't see the other three
questions, I'll be honest, but I just
saw question four and I need to talk to
everybody here. I need to talk to you.
I if everybody if if guys can pay
attention to this then space out the
whole way, listen to this, then we could
do other things. I need to talk to you
about this.
Parents will tell me about their son.
We're going to learn something that's
very dangerous this morning.
It's dangerous cuz every truth actually
could be dangerous. That's how truth
works. Think about in the world for in
in the name of truth, how many the most
crimes have been committed in history in
the name of truth. And the most
dangerous people stand up for truth. So
every truth is Tzadik in Yilchu Bam,
Yesharim Yikashu Bam. Truth is like very
very powerful. We're going to learn
something that could be misused and
still I think it's Kadai to learn it.
It's a sensitive and subtle topic usher.
I really want your I want to know we
afterwards what you feel.
Maybe that and I love parents and guys
and over the years I'm closer to parents
than ever. This is not a knock on any
parent. It's not a knock on anybody. I
want to talk about something for me and
for you for our own lives and my life.
Parents will tell me on my son is just
lazy and guys will sound themselves. I'm
just lazy. I see the other blockers like
putting in so much and I'm lazier.
So what they're describing what the
other is the least lazy I met by
my mission. It was crazy what he took on
in a second on the way there it's his
throw what he took on. We all the
time and what is it's the right thing to
do is in and I'll do and then he did it
with his us.
So people think like the other are just
have more alacrity. They're just more
energy and I can't use my energy. So I
watch the shark guy in your shoes just
pushes harder and you don't push hard
enough.
And a God knows the one who pushes the
most. He leads he's the biggest pusher
in the generation. So parents will tell
me my son's lazy. That's the ace of a
common I hear guys say it on themselves
and parents saying on my child he's just
lazy.
I think it's a remarkably lazy
understanding of lazy to be honest.
People call their kids lazy is very
lazy. You're not doing work. You're not
like being miss finding.
I have thought about it for myself. I
need to talk about this topic of lazy. I
think it could be life-changing one like
really is my iron, it could change a lot
in our own lives, a lot, Usher, a lot. I
If you learn one thing I wanted to talk
about lazy, about lazy and our own
Sugya, every single person being honest
is Sugya pushing. I want to push and the
pushing's big. So is the Sugya Yeshiva,
a place. How do we get the guys to push
the most? And then we have Nachas from
that guy. And what about the guy I I
have a guy in Yeshiva who pushed like
crazy, and then he like cracked into
nothing. And today he's mad at all those
who got into the push. What's the Sugya
Yeshiva? How hard we could get to push
that make sure he doesn't crack so make
sure he plays by recess. What's the
Sugya? There's a Sugya I want to talk
about laziness, alacrity's resource.
It's one of the mis- most misunderstood
Sugyas. It is learned in a very Laziness
is learned in a lazy way, to be honest.
And I want to study it in a not a lazy
way, and I want to talk about it.
I'm going to come from a ver just to
come from there, but I want to talk to
you guys like this.
On Chanukah, the Chanukah story. We're
well past Chanukah. This story the Bach
says is that Klal Yisrael was his
Rashlus Ba'Avodah. We were lazy about
Avodah. I struggle. I'm I'm with Mendel
today. He's impressive. He's on time.
And we've been running very on time,
thanks to Mendel. I had struggled with
time. My father was one of the most
timely people I ever met in my life. My
father time was a machine
for decades and decades. His schedule
was
wild, crazy. He was an old man. His
schedule I wouldn't do in a two months
what my father did in a day. Not
exaggerated, in a day. His schedule was
wild. And he was a calm easy going
person. He was not and you know it was
not your father's like he's like a
schmuck and his schedule is wild.
And my father was a very very on time.
It's anything about lateness is Hazal is
very sensitive to me as being a guy who
struggles with time and I'm getting
better baruch Hashem working on it and
and doing much better. I've learned a
lot of Yesodus and working on it. But my
the
Hazal speak that there was a mishmar
that was show your love and one of the
mishmars of Kohanim came late. There was
a srashel, there was a general laziness
in avodah. What was the tikkun?
What was the fixing up of the laziness?
We fought for the avodah in the Beit
Hamikdash. We were mesiras nefesh. We
put up an army and we fought for it. Why
is that the tikkun for laziness? If
they're lazy, work hard. Do the avodah
b'simcha. You're lazy, take a bochur in
yeshiva he's being lazy, put in effort.
Do you know effort is not the opposite
of laziness? Sometimes a guy shouldn't
work so hard. It's not the opposite.
It's sheker and hisrashelus avodah, the
opposite we should they should mamash do
the avodah shtark, they should come
early. No shaychus. They fought for the
avodah. Why is that the opposite of
hisrashelus?
So I want to talk about the topic as
follows. Asher, what do you know? If you
see a guy who's functioning with a lot
of energy, what do you know about him?
Let's go a specific case. You see a guy
who helps a lot of people and he seems
to have a motor.
Forget that. Forget that. Football,
watch a football player. Okay, you know
this there players in sports, I like
sports a lot. There players who take off
a lot of plays. They bring it some
plays, other plays they don't bring it.
Then you have the guy who functions with
a crazy motor.
Every play he brings it. Think about a
defensive lineman. Every play and many
plays like it's a pella they're bringing
it. How many plays are there in a
football game? The whole game?
How many plays?
50, 60, 100 plays? Say 100. The guy go
The guy charges most plays like it's a
running play and it doesn't even run 10.
It's a passing play. So, logically some
plays the guy will like take it a little
easy. Then he tries to bring it as much
There's certain players function with
the motor. What do you know about a guy
who brings it every play?
That inside he has a crazy drive to win.
Winning's important to him.
Anytime you see effort, if somebody If
somebody is bringing it hard
If somebody's bringing it crazy crazy
hard
It's funny the last night of Yeshiva,
guys speak. Guys speak and tell their
story. So, some people turn off the
lights. Some will turn off the lights.
Other people say you don't have to have
the lights off to tell your story. You
could tell it in So, it was like I have
a meaning in Mascara. Yeah, this is
after I'm I want to tell you my story
again. There's a So, the light could be
on. I'm happy when off and then it came
on. You could tell your story.
What chevre?
When a guy brings it if you see Avraham
Avinu when he did chesed was crazy. The
psukim describe five times Avraham's
running coming my hair. What do you know
about Avraham that he has a guest and
he's busting it? You know that inside he
has a tremendous cheshek.
Zrizus is megaleh, reveals. Zrizus
[clears throat] is a very pnimius, a
very internal thing. We live in a
generation that's very internal.
Zrizus does not mean to try hard. Zero.
Zero.
Zrizus means you try hard, you probably
further from zrizus.
Zrizus means that inside you care about
this. That's what zrizus means. That's
all it means.
Zrizus is a pnemiustica thing. Avraham
Avinu killing himself for guests is
megaleh he really loves people. He
believes in people. Wow. He thinks it's
very important and precious and valuable
to help people. Zrizus is megaleh
something on the pnim. It has nothing to
do with an external thing.
Histashlus Avoda deKlal Yisrael was
lazy. What do you know? They don't think
their Avoda counts.
They're lazy. It doesn't matter. It
makes no difference. The opposite of
lazy, if somebody gave a shmooze deKlal
Yisrael, said, "Let's go." If I I have
dorm counts, there's 30 dorm counts in
yeshiva.
It They They work their head off. Let's
say there's a time they're not working
so gishmak.
I see the dorm counts as a being a
little slow. Should I gather them and
give them a FIERY SPEECH? "LET'S GO!
COME ON!" THAT'S actually the silliest
speech.
I'm not helping the zrizus.
That is silly. I don't want them If
they're putting in big effort and they
don't feel it, they'll actually burn out
and crack. It's not deitza. You know
what the eitzah of the speech is? Is to
talk about the value of being a dorm
counselor. To remind people how much
people are worth. That's all. If I can
inspire and encourage and bring that out
and they can access an inner place,
that's zrizus. They're like, "Oh." The
next day they're all bringing it and
busting it.
Zrizus is a pnemiustica thing. This is
valuable. Histashlus Avoda, the opposite
would not be busted and bring it. The
opposite would be fight for it. it's
valuable.
The tikkun avodah is somehow we have
done and it was taken away by the
Greeks. We had to give up our life for
this. This is worth something. My
shtaygings worth something. It counts
what I do.
Then of course there's this reason.
So understand this. When you say a guy's
lazy, he doesn't think it matters. It's
not putting more effort, he doesn't
think it matters.
Now it's very dangerous what I'm giving
over. Because then we could see I don't
push minyanim, so I don't care. What do
you want me to do?
I don't have to say shiyur, what should
I don't care about it.
Try harder my kid. What do you mean try
harder? I don't care about it.
I don't care about it. Let's not be
pretend.
So everybody says try harder. It's not
I don't In sports, I die for every loose
ball. So I like winning.
You tell a guy to get bus, he probably
doesn't care to win as much.
If you want to win, I care more about
winning than looking stupid. So in
baseball, I watch a baseball watch
before a game. Everybody can catch every
every Before the game everybody looks
good. During the game there's a pop up
in the left field or fields it on a
bounce. Why don't you Before the game
you can catch it. Cuz if he makes an
effort for you also can look stupid. Cuz
it can hit him on the head. So instead
he he just feel I want to win more than
I want to look good. So I'm willing I'll
I'll kill myself if if I don't get it,
okay, but I'm going to try to win.
This reason is a pnimiyus thick of place
that you care about it. So what should a
guy do? You say try harder. I don't care
about this.
I don't care about the shiyur. I don't
care about prayer. And then they say my
son is lazy.
What's the opposite? He doesn't care, he
doesn't think it's valuable.
So what should I do for myself? Very
dangerous what we're learning. Crazy
dangerous.
Now here I want to tell you a little
secret
that we have nishamas that care about
Hashem to the end of the world. I
promise you. I have a nishama
that wants Hashem. That's all it wants.
You have a nishama that wants Hashem.
That's all it wants. We have nishamas.
Little secret.
Now the question is how do I access it?
I promise you you and I I don't know as
a big nishama. So we don't we don't have
such a neshama. We have nishamas that
want Hashem from one end of the world to
the other that are craving craving dying
for Hashem. All I promise you me and you
have a nishama that wants the truth that
wants that wants meaning and purpose and
valuable work. We want everything. I
promise you.
So then the question is very nice
Kodesh. How do I access that?
How do I get in touch with that Adam?
I don't I'm I'm excited. Nice coffee.
You're excellent coffee. You've made it
sugar. You're smart. Thank you Mendel.
You're smart. We have things we like. I
play I I I go to a I go to a game. I
enjoy the game. So what do you tell me I
have a nishama? We have to access the
soul. It's a part of us. It's the
biggest part of us. We have to access it
and feel and experience it.
I want to say like this.
Kitzonius versus Pnimius.
If we do it we'll sometimes feel that's
overused and misunderstood.
It is true. If a person's on fire,
they'll act in a way of zrizus
themselves. The Shaar Hamitzvos explains
that if you act fast, you'll feel it.
But it's very important kitzonius my
reishus Pnimius to be in touch with
something aroused. IT DOESN'T JUST MEAN
BUST IT AND WORK HARD.
Certainly bring it, but be sensitive.
What hit you? What resonates inside? The
I don't My own children, I don't want
them to be stark. I'm not interested in
that. Zero. Zero.
I want alone in the room, privately.
They like nod. When you learn Torah,
it's not to be the starkest guy in your
share. You have a neshama and a light
that the world needs.
It's to access it. What resonates by
you? As you're studying, big tzaddikim
don't just bring it hard, though of
course they have a mailis, but they're
sensitive and patient and present to
inside what resonates.
What hits? When you learn Torah, maybe a
certain share didn't hit you.
Find in Torah you and your place and
your find in prayer. Now, it doesn't
mean when it doesn't resonate, you don't
do it. It means you're working towards a
very pnimiyustical place. Even when you
push externally, you're ever present
internally. I this
the guys in Yeshiva changed my life. I
was completely When I knew I will we
hung in summers, I was a foreigner to my
inner world. I wasn't honest about my
insecurities. I didn't know myself. I
watched people stare with a presentness
of self, with an honesty, with an
awareness and a connection to self. The
sugiyos resources is a very
pnimiyustical sugiya of finding things
that really mean something to me. I can
learn Torah like, "Woah." I want my kids
to have different to not a nice vort.
There's nothing wrong. You could say
over your Shabbos table a nice vort. I
could share different to I'm not I don't
want to share a nice vort, which is
nothing wrong. Somebody's vort is
beautiful. I want to share something
that lights my soul on fire. When I hear
this, it's like Now, I don't say Usher
will light your soul on fire. I say two
things will happen. Either
either because it means something to me,
it will go will light your soul also.
That happens
at the very least you'll be around
somebody who's saying something that
clearly means something to them.
So, on the sugiya of laziness, what I
like to express is as follows. The
sugiya [clears throat] of laziness is
not necessarily trying hard is part of a
sugiya that's effort, but it's also
finding an inner space, finding that
space that this means something to me,
to become a space. I wanted to be better
with minyanim. My father with minyanim
is is wild and by me it's hard to go to
a minyan. So, I work on more
understanding minyan. Minyan, I love the
social aspect of praying with my
community. I need a certain type of
minyan. I don't like forest chills.
I need the minyan in Yeshiva shacharis
is like off the charts beautiful.
It's very comfortable and nice. I need a
certain thing.
I relate to it in a certain way and I
think it could be beautiful getting like
praying together, a community. It's
taken some time. I have a tremendous I
was by the minyan here very fast. Very
fast it was wonderful. There's a style
of prayer like that. I just like getting
come together in that way and pray and I
appreciate a lot. Let's say it goes
slow. Am I sitting there with deep
kavanas? I thought it was cool they were
very fast. They come and they rip it
off. I think there was a beauty to it. I
know here they come that's in a way that
with big tzadikim would daven faster. I
sit there and crunching my eyes and they
went fast. We had the same kavana and I
like getting get together early in the
morning and they come together to talk
to Hashem and to be loyal.
I you could really emotionally,
internally, in a deep way find a
connection to things.
And I want to express that the Sugya of
Zrizus and the question how do I know if
I'm remiss if it's because I feel I'm
just lazy, why I'm not doing it? Please
understand laziness. Laziness he said
like two sides. How do I know if I'm not
remiss if it's because I don't feel
connected, I'm just lazy? It's not two
Sugyas. Lazy means I haven't accessed
that place that this means something to
me.
I want my children to I love filling. I
want my kids and this is a process that
filling means a lot to them.
I like in Yeshiva and I don't say how to
do this and every Yeshiva has its
customs. I don't care if a guy comes to
Yeshiva 3 in the afternoon put on your
filling. I want filling. I'm not saying
every Yeshiva should do that. Everybody
has their ways. I want my kids that
filling's like the world to them. Like
filling's don't hide. I don't care. Do
it in front of everybody. Put on Put on
filling midday. I put on my filling
midday in Yeshiva all the time because I
want Baruch Hashem to be free. Put on
filling anytime you want. Get on your
filling. I want it to be precious
filling, the crown of the Yid. A Yid's
precious, the crown of the Yid. Put on
your filling and form a relationship to
filling. But like real, it takes time
and and a person studies and invests in
something. And I don't say you'll always
feel it. That's not That's not a truth.
And Reb Nachman says for 2 years he felt
nothing in his Avodah. There's There's
all different difficult times in our
life. I am saying that the Sugya of
Zrizus is a Sugya of a very pnimiyusdika
place this means something to me. And
the Sugya of finding the place that is
mamish means something to me to learn is
the Sugya of Zrizus. Effort could help.
Chitzoniyus mered sapnimiyus. Do it, but
be very attuned and sensitive to what's
what's coming on is something arousing
inside.
So the opposite of this rash
way the why were they lazy? Cuz they
didn't think it mattered. Who cares if
we serve Hashem? Do I really count? I
learn or not? If I'll be the strongest
in the sheer then I'll be Let's say I'm
not. Let's say I'm the weakest guy.
Let's say my learning's not in I'm not
this crazy scholar.
The acres
have that the individual the
very his own journey and in his story
and through his story and in his work is
irreplaceable. That's the acres so good.
And then if I can find that space that
it matters
A guy came to me when I was sitting
shiva for my father. He said for 14
years I sat in your father's sheer and
slept for 14 years.
The man I'm talking about a real person.
I promise I'm talking about a real guy
who's wealthy, successful man. For 14
years a successful guy who was there in
the world they call that successful and
he came for 14 years to sleep in the
sheer. Why did he keep coming back?
Is he a jokester? Very busy guy.
Beautiful family. Supports a lot of
institutions. Why is he going to a
lecture that he's sleeping for 14 years?
You know why? Cuz my father was more
impressed with him maybe than anybody.
My father was much It was like
late sonnis by my kids kids coming to
learn to tell what are you talking?
If you would ask my father don't like
late sonnis. He loved jokes. He didn't
like late sonnis.
Late sonnis is when you take serious
things and you devalue them. If you ask
my zayde would come to my father's
sheer.
My zayde in the great depression left
yeshiva at 13. Didn't know how to learn
well.
I once asked my father my father hated
late sonnis. I asked him does I be
follow your sheer? That was late sonnis.
My father ignored the He was very I'm
close to my father. We not do this that
to a son. We had a beautiful
relationship. That was like solace. The
zaidy fellowship. That was like like
solace. He was 100% right. Stupid
question.
The zaidy fellowship. Zaidy comes to
learn Torah.
When my grandfather was sick, he was in
his 80s, my father would pick him up
every morning about 6:00 in the morning
so he should come to daf. One day my
grandfather overslept. My father was
happy. His father should sleep and he
went to daf yomi. My zaidy was in his
80s, couldn't drive anymore, walked over
a mile to hear the last few minutes of
shiur.
A zaidy walked over a mile. In his 80s
he couldn't see straight. He couldn't
drive a car. He walked over a mile to
hear the last few minutes of shiur. You
hear let's? Does he follow shiur? He
gets learning Torah. The zaidy came. He
was glowing like the shemesh, the sun
saying the shiur. And zaidy is sitting
in the shiur. He walked over a mile to
come to the shiur. Came to the shiur.
And at a let's and you think zaidy
what's his lung does
you don't know what you're talking
about. You know why zaidy came for 14
years? Because it's a big thing. Zaidy
came to learn Torah. He's sitting there.
Came to learn by your rebbe to learn
Torah. It's a big thing. It was mash it.
The zaidy kept coming back cuz it's
true. It's a big thing. By the way, the
next 21 years he learned shas three
times and knows it backwards and
forwards by the way. By the way.
But the zaidy came for 14 years, slept
through shiur, and kept coming back and
I don't know which which the first years
or the last years were bigger. What do
we we don't know anything. Zaidy came to
learn Torah.
The ikker so gives reasons is a so
you're finding that it resonates. This
matters to me. When you when you talk
about zaidy it matters to me it means
that brings that turns you on.
You mean you do things It means I don't
want to just say it turns you on cuz I
want to say we have a neshama. It can
help us access it, be attentive to it.
We live in a very pnimiusdike dar and
the people want to connect deeply. I
look at my own children and the guys in
the Shiva they I love that they're not
willing to just come on be like me and
just be a robot. I tell my guy my kids
come on I just did it I don't know. No,
they're not willing. We live in a dark
that's crazy play me a web site that
spoke that that even you read this
the leaves going to get bigger. We live
in a very
good dark. So I want to ex Okay, let me
explain what you mean by that. You live
in a very dark because sometimes they
don't see that. See that way it seems
like people are very superficial.
People are not so deep.
I I I
My kids my kids my 11 year old son
emotionally
I 17 year old daughter emotionally is
ahead of where I'm up to my 11 year old
son we're in similar places emotionally.
We're in a generation that's feeling the
latest very awake. People are asking
does this mean something? We were able
we were people and this not to knock
earlier there's we were heroes of
action. We did. We could do. Let's go
come on. What's with this kid? Just get
up and do. I don't feel it. I don't
relate to this. To an external eye looks
like they're just lazy. They're very
famous. It needs to mean something. I
need to connect. We're in a generation
asking who am I? We're in generation
asking identity questions crazy stuff a
tremendous want I have to relate to
this.
The external say very emotional dark
slave. There's much more inside we never
saw I see in my kids anxiety all the
things for a hundred years. Me and my
grandparents ignored my kids are
anxious. They're they're present the
things are very anxious there because
they're feeling so beautiful. I watch
the way they relate to things and need
to like connect to things and do things
in a way of connection is crazy. I'll
tell you like this I want to say like
this.
This is not to knock anybody.
Say this carefully. If I bring to
Yeshiva a speaker comes to Yeshiva, the
guys are jumping around. I'm as the head
of the Yeshiva a visiting speaker comes
and I'm like, "Guys!" And the guys are
jumping that that that they're not
interested. Guys will walk at the
amazing Derek Harris, but they'll walk
out. They can.
Bring somebody who's sharing who's
sharing in an honest way, there's not a
sound in the room.
Not a sound. I have asked the
grandfather that hearing aids a month
ago to speak. Wasn't the speaker, it was
not a guy moved. What happened?
Pnimiyus. We live in the one in an
incredibly It's changing my life. I have
started to look into my inside because
of my kids, cuz the guys in the Yeshiva.
To really ask myself and to admit
I'm much more sensitive than I ever
admitted. And I thought my like job was
if if my kids said something to be
strong.
Now I like getting insulted. I'm hurt.
And it's what I used to do is part of me
would shut down, but I was strong. Now
I'm insulted I go and I walk with my
wife and I bring all of myself to my
children.
It's It's a crazy Pnimiyus thinker.
They're crazy. Very Pnimiyus. And this
Sugya of lazy, guys want to relate to
things. We don't want to just do what
we're not feeling. And it's beautiful.
Reb Cook writes about this. Says the Dar
Maschiach Hotzpa'aski, proliferation of
Hotzpa. That's That's Mamesh this
Nekuda. HOTZPA, JUST COME ON. WHAT'S
WITH YOU? Let's go. No. No. No. No. No.
We're not We're not We're not doing that
show. I like the guys talking out
perfect. No problem. I'm not saying how
Yeshiva should run. Everybody has to do
it their own way. I am saying it's a
crazy We're not doing that thing.
But guys are refusing. Minyanim across
America, ask every seventh and eighth
grade Minyan. Every I've spoken to
dozens of Menahalim. How to run a Minyan
for a high school seventh and eighth
graders. They're talking by talking.
They're not doing the robotic thing. I'm
not saying they should be talking. I'm
saying we have to find the space of
connection. This means something to me.
So, we need minyanim. The guys in
Yeshiva started a minyan in Baltimore.
You can't get a seat if you're a minute
late. You think what's going to be with
our minyanim? But it's a gorgeous
minyan. It's a lot of chaos. They love
each other. It's friendly. A good
minyan, a guy counts. Somebody greets
every person who walks into the shul.
You can't get a seat. You have to If the
minyan starts 9:00, 9:01, you might not
get a seat. I'm telling you. The singing
is stunning. It's chaos. The rubs and
hugs the person. That we could do it
with chaos and and sincerity. And it's
like you matter. A person comes in, your
prayer matters.
This iker sod gives reshus is finding
the inner spot. Understand you have it
already.
I said it's dangerous cuz it can come A
guy can draw the conclusion. I don't get
it. For the ski trip, you're up early in
the morning. And for minyan, you're not.
So, you see you don't care. I'm not in
touch with my care. My neshama cares
about prayer. My neshama just wants to
pray. So, I'm not in touch. So, how do I
access that space? So, then we have to
figure out ways. Now, sometimes doing
it, but it's not just busting it cuz I
rera sapnimius means it arouses.
Big tzaddikim are very in touch with
their pnimius.
I met Rabbi Willig. I want to say being
with him, he's so comfortable with
himself. My father was like that. They
don't try to be other things. He's just
himself. So, when I was with this talmid
chacham, he's not trying to impress,
trying to use himself.
Beautiful talmid chacham and tzaddik
being him.
Not forcing things. The big tzaddikim
and leaders, of course, they bring it.
They found themselves. My father
[clears throat] functioned a crazy day
you would meet him, he was a chiller. He
was not like There was no But here's a
person who has a day that's crazy, he
was himself. He wasn't being some He
found comfortably himself.
His neshama was on fire. Was on fire.
Mamish him.
The job in Yeshiva is to find you real.
Real authentically. Real.
Every guy it's not a It's not a slogan.
I promise when a shamash it's not meant
like a struggling guy when a shamash
like a nice smooth guy. Promise. Every
coil guy and coil chosid needs to know
this. It's not It's not a slogan. It's a
truth. It's changed my life, Yosef. And
I'm finding places our inner world
beautiful, not just our outer world. We
think our outer world lies inside. I
thought I was the biggest mess in the
inner world. It's more beautiful than
outer world beautiful. It's interesting.
Our own inner things, our desires, our
wonderful with desire connection, our
insecurities are wonderful. There's an
essence, there's a person here. You can
meet him, you can touch him, you can
feel it, and you can serve Hashem with
it. So, that's this last question just
got me fired up. I apologize. It's
getting later and we're supposed to have
question and answers and divrei Torah.
We didn't even sing yet and we're 45
minutes. This is wild, Yosef. But I saw
lazy here and that that works me up,
Yosef. I want to express that the
sugiyah of zrizus Zrizus means
somebody's passionate about something.
Whoa, this means something to you.
Laziness means it's not valuable to you.
Now, you might then say, "So, I see it
feels not valuable to me." Please
understand to your neshama if the only
value is Hashem. That's me and that's
you. That's our neshamas.
Okay, we have to access that space that
there's a sugiyah to access it. Doing
efforts big help in that. But be
attentive to what's resonating. When you
learn, try to be aware of what divrei
Torah Hashem hit you.
Don't you learn stark, but also ask,
"That hit me. That didn't really hit.
Different times in my life, different
things hit.
Different times, different things hit.
So, be like attentive, be aware what's
hitting, what's resonating, what's what
what what wow. MS MS that like hits
them. When you learn Torah, learn
present.
I want to tell you a little about Reb
Nachman, but I've spoken far too long
without singing. Could you do us a
favor? Let's the sing the dish. I want
What's your name?
Yes.
Ezra. So, I'm some guy who comes to hear
and I'm here like yapping away. I really
want to talk to you. But MS, I promise
you, Ezra. I want me I want to tell you
about Reb Nachman of Breslov. I want to
tell you about him. Maybe we'll have
time there, we'll have time there, maybe
we will I don't know.
Let's first sing the dish of a nigan.
Reb Levi Yitzchak was a Yid who saw Yid,
who saw the pnimius of Yidden and valued
a Yid. I want I want to pray you could
have in mind whatever you want. It's a
song without words. So, nobody puts
words to the song. It's without words. I
like praying that Hashem gives me an
ayin to see the value of myself and to
see the value in others, but real, not
pretend. I have a guy in Yeshiva Chevron
a guy in Yeshiva came went on a walk
with me. He said, "Rebbi, I came here
that you should like me. I wanted you to
like me and you haven't liked me this
year."
And I've been here 8 months and you
don't like me. And he attacked. He said,
"You don't like me." I thought about it.
I came back to him and we walked for 2
hours. And you're right.
You're right. He's right. Right, I
didn't like I promise he's right. He was
right.
Person's being real with you, you don't
No, no, you're wonderful. He's right.
Did not like him.
I told him my own segulah, what stops me
from liking. We're like this today.
But I want an ayin. We all have our own
things. Every person has people they
appreciate and people they struggle.
It's really just a reflection on
yourself. I'll tell you something funny.
There's a Yid in Eretz Yisrael that I
that I meet always is like too heavy for
me. There's something heavy and I just
can't handle it. It's too heavy.
I started working. I got out of school
it's very hectic. You run here and
there. I don't care you go to five
places nothing. That means nothing. You
went to no places. I'm here now I want
to be I want to be with Ezra now just
with you. I don't want to hear you run
this place who cares. That's nothing
that's zero. Speak to tell me you spoke
to no one. I want to speak to Ezra this
morning. We're going to sit down and
talk together. So it doesn't matter how
many places. I was trying and I'm
working the guys have
brought me to a place of trying to just
be more relaxed and more present to
chill out. And I'm trying just to be
more present. That's it. Calmly be here.
Who cares what's next? What we'll get to
it doesn't matter.
I want to be here and be with the chevre
here and if you all we spoke about I
don't hope prepared. I wrote a speech on
the plane. It all
nothing was said from that. Who cares?
Blazy was the point. Be present. So I
was working on that. I met this year I'm
in a much calmer place. I met this year
he was so much calmer.
It turns out it was like true call a
pace of the moment of the moment pace of
it was just true. He was much calmer. It
was just the reflection of me. I saw him
as so heavy. He's a stickle heavy much
calmer. Did he work on himself? I worked
on me. And all of a sudden it was a
pleasure being with him.
So
>> [clears throat]

>> Thank you very much. Now we can
definitely learn something else.
I have a stickle that's going to take
more than the time and
I was like to be around people that are
timely. So, I don't want to do that.
I'm going to minus the stickle to where
I'll tell you a story.
I was just in Aris throw.
And
I went some year I went somewhere with
you beautiful place with you that are
with a lot of you that are struggling
fighting to find.
And a guy stops me I sure he was like
3:00 in the morning.
And he said I've been meaning to tell
you this for 2 years. He said you're a
fake.
He said you're a fake, admit it.
So
So, I love that question a lot. I like
that question. And what the Yids
grappling is what all of us grapple. All
of us grapple. We're in the sharmas and
we're human beings.
And we're very human and we're not
always in touch. And the question always
fake fake is it real? And this darn more
than anything is a very prenumerous
stick a dirt.
We want things that are real that we
connect to.
And I want to express we won't always
connect. We won't always connect to to
we'll have moments we'll have moments of
clarity.
We'll have moments I just sense this is
big. And then there's a darkness.
It's hard I there times we learn tired
we connect and it
what we real the the
and Barry the
and sign is like a lion and you're
you're on fire. And there times where
it's difficult where it's difficult to
feel what you're doing.
And and I want to express that it's
valuable and it serves a sham.
And it's valuable even when we don't
touch it. But to yes look for the times
that I sense that I'm in touch that this
is that this means something to me to be
present to that.
I want to I want to close I want to
close to the February with one card to
the Rebbe. And I want to tell this to
you about your own families. I want you
to I want you to hear this. What's
what's your name right? What's your
name?
Yes. Barry. Barry.
I want you to remember this for your own
kids Barry. I'm Barry Horowitz. You It's
a nice name yeah yeah.
What's your full name Barry?
You have a name? Mhm. It's called Barry.
And they call Barry like that cuz it
goes with
Barry I want you to hear this. I think
this is important for every year it's
from a normal moment. It's a longer
discussion but we have 3 minutes I want
to share this.
When my show comes to parry so parry
says who are you? So I'm a man of God.
Please
who are you?
So parry says to my show to new one new
my a sham quotes parry a sham says my
show parry is going to say to you to new
one new my face.
Give. But he doesn't say one he says to
new one new my face. Give for yourself a
miracle. Show me something. You're a man
of God, prove it.
But he says give yourself a miracle.
Do a magic trick. Do something crazy.
You're You're from God, prove it to me.
But he doesn't say get He should say to
new Lana
He says to Lana
Give yourself a magic trick. Do your Why
yourself? Give for me. My show shows up
to pirate. So pirate says prove your
metal. Hey, you're such big stuff. Give
it He doesn't say give He says give for
yourself.
And the name of the Malik is Why does he
say Lana? To new Lana [clears throat] my
face.
Cash in the name of Malik. Listen to
this. My kids and I we go to a Pesach
hotel Hashem. And the hotel hires a
magician. He goes around table to table
do magic tricks. So what's the instinct
of family? My kids start like figuring
out some of my kids want to figure out
the trick. I want to
look it up how he does it. I never tell
me the secret. I have a friend
Lavenger, learned in Yeshiva, crazy
magician. I don't want to know his
tricks. Don't tell me nobody on the way
out tell me how he does it. It's not a
smack if you know the trick. You think
the magician says You think the
magician's amazed from his own trick?
Please, it's boring.
It's a smack for us. I was once
I was in Lakewood with two Bachman at a
Hasman. I grew up two guys and I want I
want a guy to see part of the world that
two guys have been through a lot in
their life. They don't have a Yeshiva
never world. And I want them to feel you
just the world's with you you're with
the world. We have a whole world getting
and we like together. Lavenger
walks into the restaurant. He's from the
best magicians in the world. He walks
in. I say he had come from a
gig. We had come from a wedding. So I
wanted them to see that they have
talented brothers. I said do a
trick. So he said sure. He He doing
tricks in front of the whole restaurant
in Lakewood. These guys like their
brother is the best. He was putting
rings on people, taking it off, doing
crazy stuff. So he put it on a Yeshiva
Shiguy. The guy was like, "Beggedish!"
"Hot!"
That guy quickly takes it off. The other
guy is "I know how you did that." He
starts handling like how he did it. So
always like people love figuring out by
me, I never want you to figure out. I
never I don't tell me the trick cuz when
you know the trick, it loses the
gishmak.
Says the Naimi L'Melech Parshas was
saying to to Moshe Rabbeinu,
"We're a place of magic. We know how to
do great tricks. And we're magicians.
It's only for the other. For us, it's
not gishmak cuz we know the trick.
It's gishmak for you.
If you're really a shliach of Hashem,
don't do a magic trick for us. Then
you're just like us. We do tricks for
you, you do tricks for us. Tenu lachem
mofes. Do something that startles
yourself.
If you do a neis that you can't believe,
then you're a person of Hashem beyond
yourself.
Don't do us a miracle. You're just like
us. We do tricks for you, you do tricks
us. Tenu lachem mofes. Do something
that's amazing for you."
Says the Naimi L'Melech, that's how
chinuch has to work. Don't be gishmak
for the guys.
I don't sing the ba'al dikri cuz you
like it. I don't know what you like. I
sing the ba'al dikri cuz I connect to
that song. Tenu lachem mofes. When you
teach Torah, teach my father taught it
with a chiyus from self. Rabbi Willig,
you walk into me as a chiyus mofes. He's
not playing for you.
What usually happens is because it
emanates from him, it goes into our
heart. And even if it doesn't, people
who were around my father heard his
shiurim, they were around somebody who
the Torah was precious to him. That
alone is like huge. Tenu lachem mofes.
Give for yourself. You know, people tell
the little kids, "Who made the
triangle?"
I don't want to tell you shalom aleichem
who made the tree. I want to live in
gratitude to Hashem. I want to be in
that place. If I'm in that place, my
son's around
my face. Do for yourself something. Do
for yourself something that's precious.
Yes, if you're raising the son, Yes, if
that's Hashem to know what you're my
face. When we're around something that
resonates by us, do something wondrous,
something my sure I have been to plug in
that you yourself are amazed by Hashem
will feel that it's true. To know what
you're my face.
So, this is the directive to every
single panic their own children. To know
what you're my face. Find ways of
connecting and relating in meaningful
and deep ways to Torah, to Yiddishkeit
in a way that's special for you and that
will resonate, that will go over to tell
me them. In the Gamara you're teaching
Gamara, what people ask what share
should I get? Just now there was a whole
speech prepared, but laziness is on my
mind. That's what I'm doing at to know
what you're my face. It has to be
something where you are. Say where you
are and then hopefully either somebody
will also go into them with the very
least they'll see somebody what's it
means something to you. To know what
you're my face. So,
I want to give a bracha. Rebbe Nachman
says all Torah should end in a tefillah.
I want to give a bracha and a tefillah.
I want to say a tefillah to you and I
that Hashem should assist us as benei
Torah who are in Yeshiva, who are zocheh
to learn Torah. Clearly have special
rebbeim. I want to give us a bracha we
should be zocheh all of us to find a
deep space inside of ourselves that our
avodah counts, that we are learning
Torah accounts, our prayer matters, our
kiddush Hashem matters should deeply
resonate within us. And then we should
from that space be a fire to the world
as reshus. We should function with
tremendous alacrity as reshus of
somebody who helps. Their avodah counts
and matters are tremendous. Hashem
values my Torah, my tefillah, my
relationship to him, my chesed that I
can bring out to the world. Then as
reshus should work. Now, certainly
there's effort. Bust it and bring it.
But the effort should be in sync with
the idea of plainness and inner
awareness. My avoid matters big sadikim
certain work hard, but it's very
comfortable. Looks like it fits them
because they have found a deep plainness
to take a place. To get to his reasons
we should all be risen. This reason
might be limited. We should get to deep
places where I avoid the counts and
matters we should fight. The opposite of
his rash we should fight for our life.
This is something worth fighting for.
It's not always easy. Something
worthwhile. Fighting for my light should
shine to the world in a beautiful and
meaningful way. Fight for it. Bring for
it. Battle for it. We should all be
given the strength to discover this.
Have a wonderful Shabbos.
