the last telegram of the Reb. I don't
know why Rabbi Goner called me was the
middle of the day. I should come and
prepare. I didn't want to ask him why
the guy is not doing it. Whatever it is,
I came back. I was working that time in
Williamsburg. I came back and I prepared
based on what the Reb had spoken that
time a normal type talk type without the
Reb having to prosecute already from
from from different
punctas
came in welcome to among
an ongoing fabric in about life as aid,
our vibrant connection with the Reb and
inspired living shaped by the way he
teaches us each and every day.
How are you?
>> Thank you very much for being here.
>> You're welcome.
So there's a lot that I want to discuss
with you with the with myim.
There's a lot of involvement that you
had. I guess a little bit behind the
scenes. I don't know if how many people
know about it. So therefore, uh I'm glad
that you're here, but my first question
for you is where were you coming from?
When did you get to the Reba? How did
that happen?
>> Yes. Uh I was born in uh Paris.
I lived in a villier at the age of five.
I moved to a little stat called year
walking 25 minutes from the shiv binoir.
In um the end of
I went to the reb was officially was I
was going for
bay. I came here
l it was shim I stayed here lammed b lad
giml I was in Morristown about kisv
toshin lamemedal
I was already in crown heights and
that's when I um
started getting involved a little bit in
the sus
I uh I in the building of 784 788 the
buildings next to 770.
upstairs there was an office I think
later was uh used by Yosi Kasin all over
schol and this was the office of the
sikas and I would type up here and there
the
ladim the old one would bring us that
they finally got ready
to type and to publicize it asked me to
type it
>> so what what was the say there So the
fab shabas let's say this when is this
all happening?
No this in those years Shabas fabangans
were about for inlam B just shabasim
maybe one more bay the day of the br
mostly there weren't so many for bring
us in the year officially each year had
someone who would write the anorus of
that year
uh when I finally came to the reban I
was so happy waiting to um to come into
New York once four weeks we came in for
Shabasim. I was sure I'm coming in here.
I'll get the
I'll be able to learn the faban
and when I would come in here they
nothing came out yet.
Uh the same thing I guess with lamemed
giml and those were the guys riding the
shabas and the wigbring they had someone
>> you see they weren't producing it
properly.
>> Right. Right. There was this in those
years there was a
>> Yeah.
>> a weakness in the hanakas.
>> Yes. Um
and um
the
week the fabangans I guess someone would
write it. Uh in those years there were
no uh cassette recorders. It was just a
big realtore.
Uh wasn't easy to write it down. And
after you wrote it down, you couldn't
listen over because it would ruin again
the the real to real tape.
Uh and then someone else not from the
ones who wrote the Shabas forens
would um would look over the
um fix it. It was called making trains
like turning around the words the refs
said here to there in order something
that was spoken with anigan should be
able to be readable a little bit when
it's on text and then they would type it
up. Before it used to be on stencil.
Um stencil is something that uh you
typed in it. You type strong enough so
it made holes in the stencil and then
that stencil you were able to fix it.
behind a kind of little liquid that you
could fix. It wasn't so easy that you
would put on the machine and print it.
The ink would go through the holes. Um
>> that's like the camping device.
>> That's Yeah. Was what I mean to say
wasn't offset.
>> Mhm.
Uh when I came was about as I said
Kisval
uh at that time I still remember Alec
Friedman
Friedman which is fast now
was sitting together with Mandal which
was for years a
lud and they were sitting at that time
this was Kisv uh trying to write the han
of shabas nak from that year.
Uh I started typing a little bit Shapiro
would give me a that it's ready. Could
you please type it? Of course.
>> One second. So the these people that are
writing that would write write it down
by hand.
The some of them by hand and some with a
typewriter.
Those secrets of course were all mostly
by hand or it depends if the guy who
typed from the tape was a Israeli guy
that knew how to type so maybe it was
typed but a lot of them were by hand.
Um
>> you started typing the these anas
>> he would ask me here's a fing it's ready
if you type it up it will come out.
If I wouldn't type it, uh, it would go
to what you call Giza and that would
never come out.
Uh,
anyhow, by the end, I'm sorry
that same year
um, I believe Levan got married to
Lamadal. Sorry, you don't have to go
into all the details, but basically till
the
right regular and then there's and the
early l's like this, right? It's not
>> No, that's that's not my uh my line. I
wasn't there. If you want to know more
about the history of the previous years,
uh that you would have to ask someone
else who has it written down. I came
here end of lamealof.
I uh after all wrote the for at least 10
years I believe when he started doing um
he got more busy also.
So he was doing less. The story goes
that rebell
the old man Rabbi Simpson
walked over to Rabier like being upset
why he was the official
why you not giving out riding my morim.
So Rabiel told them how many years did
you write by the rebashab he wrote I
think
he only wrote one or two years I already
did 10 years you know it's uh people
don't understand throughout the years of
the boim every year or so was a
different group of bim that were making
the
and even then not much
came out of course just in the beginning
after the revolution of the bimshov
I guess
came out but then later I guess
um
the memor at that time already uh when
11 I think got married
from Argentina
started writing the memorial
uh
by that same year David Feldma used to
write Hanoka's uh
I think he only made like six copies. He
had six people. How big was all the
Babage? Six people that took from him um
a copy. One of them got a copy was uh
was the Reb. I think Rabbi Gon used to
call it or maybe the Reb, the Kanas
because practically sometimes it was on
different color paper. whatever you were
able to get for cheap paper you couldn't
get just was expensive sometimes maybe
even I don't know in the same s was a um
you have a page of different color of
paper at a um at so by the end of to by
the beginning of
uh the
original
I think Shapiro
um asked David Feldman that in addition
to write the tan which wouldn't take
that much time was a short
it's he should also write a han in
Yiddish with all the details a lengthy
han so they could use form there was
nobody else at that time that was making
the
feldman agreed they um
they of course he wasn't going to do it
himself so they had three people Feldman
and Ra who was a sator now is in Paris
and Midot
they broke up the Fabrangan I think
Rabbi Olot would write the rashes
and like this they were doing all the
shabas of course they all the shabas
fabbrangans
um also in Yiddish everything was
written like abr would be 40 50 written
pages This
>> uh
>> were they theim also?
>> They were. No, they knew the Fabian.
There's old people that knew but most
probably they said by the Fbran and took
nudas but they knew the Fabrangan also
of course
David Feldman knew the whole
as a very good head of course but he was
based u on Khaz
and um
Khazor not always was the same the same
level of but this we're not talking
about that like this they started
writing fabings of to
Khan of course came he said they should
work in cooperation
because he wanted to rewrite the fabbran
his style of writing is much uh higher
than anybody uh but it takes him longer
lapel that throughout the year lamemed
most of herans
did not come out. They wrote the whole
year. All the shabas fabans
I believe most of them didn't come out.
What you see now that there's a book of
a lot of them were nishlim after
when we started the new
we every time did bring from the year
before.
Why did they write them and not put them
out?
>> Why didn't they come out?
U
whatever people um for sure it wasn't
the fault of the three people
>> just wanted to work on them but it takes
longer but there is
which was supposed to take care of it.
It's not so simple said
u by the end of tin lamemed beginning of
lamemed vv
um and at that time also
since we had hoped maybe foris will come
out so we prepared also some march I
remember me and feldman being ina which
had a nice library this before the
library in s there was a second good
library kind of that opened up we had no
forum so it would be in the library in
ina
to make little misus anyhow seems after
working uh a whole year it took a lot of
time from from David Feldman by the
beginning of he notified
that he's not going to continue to make
any more he doesn't want to waste his
time he doesn't have time with set and
learn
that's it that means that in a certain
sense
is over at that time also the same
period of time the beginning of
I think was the announced he's sending
I think the first of announced and one
of them that was picked was
in other words that meant that that's it
there is nobody anymore here that is
going to ride
Um,
this was a Friday night. I think 14,48.
I don't remember which building exactly
my apartment was. It was the Friday
night of Shabas Mishimov
1976.
Um, and on the same floor in the
apartment in the build in the apartment
there was another room where my good
friend
Pausner they called him Iki Pausner. I
think he's in Chicago, Illinois is
today. Ashley Ral Shaw was also someone
a good friend of mine still from before
someone else there. And somehow
when I came at night, whatever,
I don't want to say another word. We
started talking and they're all being
very upset. What's going on? Why areas
not coming out? And when I gave him a
report, uh the truth, what's going on?
They were shocked. They were very upset.
And on the spot, a decision was made
that we're starting to give out the
sikas from this shabas. This is Friday
night late at night from this shabas.
The fact we don't have who's going to
write the sikas. David is not writing
anymore in Yiddish.
So we said we'll take David Feldman's
son in Lash Kadesh and we'll take a few
guys and they'll
>> he was still running Kadesh even though
he was
>> no of course he continued. Yeah. Sure.
Yeah. whatever it's called whatever was
more than but uh
and
at right shabas we um
we took as soon as felman had one page
or two pages ready we sat down I think
karonov which was aer himself my good
friend Rabian Misha Wahberg
uh also I knew him from Morristown had a
very good head and I I think also Matsov
even though he was very young. He's
today in Paris in Liska
and uh they started writing Dora in
Yiddish. They all knew the FBI very well
also. But here they have a taken
already. It's much more than having the
from
and you write it out in the language you
write
and I um had a typewriter there was the
not only Hermas was called Hermas
Ambassador. The regular good Hermas
typewriter was Hermas 3000. The old
tables were alvetiusim.
Alveti didn't have nice as but Hermas
was the one that we used to use and I
had her ambassador
uh at that time already by tough shin
and hay around already was invented uh
the new ribbon. It's a one-time ribbon
unlike the old ribbons that were cotton
that they keep finishing and going back.
So the ACS are not sharp. Those were a
kind of a ribbon that every letter you
type it uses one time and the ribbon
continues. Once it's finished, you have
to change the ribbon and then you're
able to print from it offset because
it's very sharp. The original is very
sharp. Any typed the s I used the office
there happened to be beginning of tov. I
went upstairs in the building uh and I
found our office a big storage room
belonged to Rabbi Kinsky to Lavich. It
was had no door on it even and it was
all packed on with storage with stuff
that belong to Lavich. I made myself a
little space and a desk without
permission and I said I'm there to do
some work. I even gave out on my own
without asking anybody a s of I think
then we decided to start the new. They
all went up to my quote unquote office.
They wrote there was a little space and
I typed it. If I'm not mistaken, by
Tuesday we finished and I went I gave to
the person in charge of the printing of
the sus which was tann from the matzab
baker my good friend and he send it to
print
that time the printing was Manhattan
right uh uh right we cross the first
stop when you come to Manhattan was
offset place
and he came back they were selling it in
770 upstairs as if you know maybe till
now in the beam of Chrisa because he
used to be the one for years selling the
secret there was a a good ler he owned
there underneath the beam is in a land
the beam of sater he was selling the
jumped on the secret it was never in
history that three four days after of
the and I think the secret altogether
costed 25 cents or whatever it was
um after he finished selling there was
some um
exchange
of words. Um
it was no choice and uh he was notified
that uh that there is no more the old
vad there is a new vadim
>> the one that you guys were doing.
>> Yes.
>> Question was also
>> I have a question. There was no is any
from the about coming out not coming out
like what the rebba didn't involve
>> in that just I'll say it now that in the
time when we started
uh till then
>> I'm saying I'm asking before then
>> yeah so the would complain a lot of
times and the expression was kind of
the said he spoke something and it's not
written Now the reb was upset. I could
say that um that from when our sus
started the Reb changed the tune. The
tune used to be
a was I spoke it was written printed
bound in a book put on the shelf and
nobody paid attention to whatever I said
there. They should have asked a
question. Usually there was no question
on the Reb obviously, but that's what
the Reb said that he what he said is
there's a question that um but at that
time so there there we go. We we told
them that um there's going to be a new
but who's going to ride the between
Shabas Mishim to next Shabasan.
Uh I was walking with David Feldman
to his apartment. It was a bach of
course I think on crown street and uh
suddenly
I knew he was very very upset. There was
no way to talk to him about coming back
to ride the secrets but at that point
suddenly he told me says here since
already um this thing broke out so I'm
joining you. I I can't say over how my
heart was jumping dancing from joy that
from
he came upstairs and we started working.
He would write mostly
was supposed to do the rash for a short
time. He did the Russia series
uh and I together with um Yankim
Yanime Wahberg I'm mixing up Yakush and
Goldberg Yakime Wahberg uh would do the
Marmis and later on uh was mostly me
the same thing I did the Maramus
on the sir also on the my talking about
simple March famous
uh when you write a mimer obviously the
which the rabbi is basing the mimer the
the person writes the mimer
is supposed to know but all other side
things that are mentioned now making the
march
>> how do you make manus yeah how does that
work
>> making the march
um
>> today we know how to make marchus you
google
forget about hey today we have
we have many books in our time there was
for Samsukim there was a book it still
exists called concordancia
um how do you say it in English
>> I know concordans
>> whatever I think actually I don't
believe even it was made by yid
I think it was made by uh by an
>> I have one I have one
>> is based on uh it's interesting thing. I
still keep that book. It's one of the
interesting books from the olden times.
The mile of that book is that you could
found every word based on the sherish.
As we all know, the Reb usually did not
repeat the way they are in or the even
said once explanation for it. Maybe
because Bal
say the reb himself.
>> I think the Reb said uh that's why I
heard I don't remember. if it was in my
time. So we're able to find just uh for
a joke besides one posik that simply we
had no clue uh was there was a posik
that says nika shu luf dal
but it's a posik that today I'm sure you
know that pik but uh we didn't know that
and when you hear the tape or whatever
it is it sounded to me at least maybe le
nikad shif dog and therefore uh there
was no way to find
I remember a story I always testim I
tell them what's the first half um
I asked them what's the first half Pik
of that poss
on the tape there was someone once who
wrote
from the tape and not being able to
understand the Reb says he thought the
Reb is saying and he put a question mark
he put a question mark that could happen
of course the reb once said about
that the way he would know where a is
because he brought Sanhedrin
>> yeah anyhow so this was this was had a
congred when it comes to my kazal
there's a three volume book called
vapism that already existed before my
time. We also bought those three swarm.
The only problem is that in this
you u you have to know the lotion of the
kazal. It's alphabetically ordered but
you have to know the sentence. And since
the reb usually would not say over kazal
uh
>> the whole thing
>> the whole thing or the sentence. So it
was quite hard. Later on we found out
was another book at Pisal I think in
downstairs in the Shane in the library
of uh Shane the library of downstairs
770 but we did we at that time didn't
know about it so we had then we had
another book called
Pisgazal I think it was called um
it was called um a that one was set up
according also three volumes according
to topics. So you would go through the
whole topic that this era or another er
maybe you were able to find wasn't easy.
Obviously the encyclopedia you have for
the past 30 years or so or more and
didn't exist at least we didn't know. I
do remember that what you call today was
Shuchu's Barilan Barlan University but
it was something people didn't have only
I think yeshiva university here had uh
that program I remember that Ma winner
the mahabasim zoken would go to them to
get staff and for them it was a lot of
money but you needed one word they would
print out 50 pages you had to pay
because that word would me was mentioned
even though not necessarily needed
everything and also march kazal
was much harder. Um
just rarely when it was a very hard
kazal I would go up to the library
uh upstairs in the kaou in the back of
770 they had a very good library which
was donated by the balker of Mikaslavin
Mal Slavin Leishas's father that passed
away I think lament bays in accident and
there was a lot of goods for him but we
didn't really have access there but only
from time to time there was also no time
the sus everything was done under
pressure of time to finish
>> also the manus weren't done like mameish
everything
>> no whatever we knew
>> yeah I'm saying
>> obviously things that the rabbi didn't
say or the
we didn't even try
>> way the rebb sometimes helped you
because in the rebel say
like very often in the in in the in the
when in theb says where it is right
>> yeah but if the says
First of all, you have to have a free
safer
there. It's not always on the pro.
>> Mhm. Um
uh concerning the here I have um we
talked we talked before about the so
here
it's
the quoted the way the said it on the
tape
according to the
we found expression
and he he marks the where where it says
is in Bameid in Med
happened to be the that for bringing and
after it was printed the rebel looked it
over and made a few corrections not yeah
but it made here and there
>> that happened often
>> sometimes not so many not so many times
no throughout all those years um he
could be I don't know a few times were
so happy and the rebed simply shabas
have a
says
So the expression was different that's
why I couldn't find it in the mirror
and yeah so this how we now we have to
remind all
um where do we look for them the first
and
was given out by Rabbi Munchin at the
end of VV which is the end of a year
already doing the second volume came out
in 1980
Um concerning uh so there was nowhere to
look like this. You could find where the
rabbit there is
in the back of
but this is not
could be considered a m it's like
now um when it came to
I think the only maf is before your
times also.
>> Yeah they had a little would write man
became or you give to someone else.
You're talking about
whoever worked that time would uh maybe
was Shapiro would look up and
the same thing again you know uh the
thing was also that besides looking
you have to make sure that what you
write in the says in the reb was
screaming about
we learned from the rebb we never
without looking inside. The Reb always
would look inside. I never even though
came he knew all of them but he asked to
check the maps unless he would ask for
take out a book from the shafer was
there the don't say we learned from the
rebu
obviously we
knew most of marist of sukim the reb
said like all the sukim said we knew
them already where they from so many
times but never did I at least
without looking uh inside. When it came
to there was actually um
much harder. I think there was one maf I
read big book was printed that the reb
had over there the mas he gave out to
based on whatever
he had in the time when he made that m
uh maybe another few of the musim
of course we would ask someone like
wasn't so easy uh to bother for things
like this sharonov maybe
um Now concerning asking the rebba
uh I'll finish I'll go back to the
technical uh maris in general of course
you didn't ask the rebus
not only maris didn't ask the rebba
most if you had a question if you were
able to get away without asking the
rebba we of course did not the people
that write down did not ask of course
not maris doesn't come in consideration
there were rarely times that uh either
we asked the rebels which means we
didn't ask where this says we gave you
that page where the thing it says there
with a question mark on the side asking
go to show to the reb you know and uh
important things and sometimes it
happened after the thing was printed and
something was saying there and marime
was wrong or missing and the reb wrote
on the side for instance um there's
certain moment came. So we had no choice
like it's not just the Reb says a um
or something I'm sorry
by the way like in the what that famous
Reb's instruction that if you don't find
take it out this was for instance the
Reb said in
the Reb said
he spoke about
the famous and then said he continued
finishing the it says
the number of is that it says
that his name is that Mashiach's name is
of course in we didn't find anything we
asked something the Reb
but that page we had to give in just
that page itself the way was ready to be
printed no not connection begin again
and the reb added a bunch of lines it's
most popular days everything is
publicized a whole thing just to leave
what he said.
>> Mhm.
>> But he added that it's in with the whole
uh explanation to bring out that that
there is why he said
that it should be like this basically
for it.
>> Huh?
>> There is a marker for it.
>> Yeah. He says he's using the expression
is based on the result but he's using
doesn't say in famous sugia he's using
blion of Sanhedrin
for instance um in a mimer this very
interesting this already
that that they wrote in a mimer
I think
so the rebs
that uh shisha sidra Mishna is um
they come out from
the shisha midday the six spheres of lo
as alterba brings in the in
simply as the
which you know
not everyone was brok
I I could tell you one thing today Most
people
uh the people who worked in of course
know the Tanya upside down uh and the
reb but they couldn't maybe doesn't say
exactly I don't know I didn't look it up
now answered
I'm referring to the second in the end
of a lot of there like there was a of
and they're interesting enough this was
a week the faban is the same like that
one the whole
The Reb mentioned about something he
said
as known the explanation in means the
book
writing they must have found that it was
easier in
the
wrote
and they put a footnote which page but
answered
says on purpose I did not say that I'm
referring to these
already exists and an earlier source in
bira of the which said is called
means the reb and that's why he said
bira and the bira was printed by the
rabb
Here's for instance um a very very
interesting
thing that happened also weekday from
the tape
um
in
when they prepared
in the Reb mentioned
about uh something uh the way the way we
printed
the the way we prepared
we wrote
mitzvah. There's a suggest
the rash. Has he known what Russia says?
I mean, who is supposed to know what
Russia says? Which Rash? And we asked
the Reb. This surprisingly enough the
Reb asked
please copy and send me in the few lines
from the tape the way I spoke which this
thing is in the middle of those few
lines I without thinking twice I ran
fast I took my uh rashima of the tape
that I typed I typed over those 10 lines
gave it into without I guess the people
had to look didn't look and didn't
realize there's any difference. And the
Reb circled around that word for word
transcript from the tape and he write he
writes
I didn't say
I said
and
that's the way that's the way you wrote
it. You wrote
>> No, we by mistake wrote and we had no
clue because obviously we looked at
Shabas.
>> No, I'm saying in the in the in the
transcript of the tape you wrote
>> on the tape said but we we didn't pay
attention.
I'm sorry to say that says it was a
mistake but the kind of of must have
been surprised I got to see what did I
say and uh we gave it in. Reb says here
he circled around I said not. So in the
transcript it did say
>> he said properly and then said this is
the rash I refer to you know
>> um
a few of the interesting things
>> who is writing all of this David Feldman
>> um
yes this is those years everything is uh
throughout all the years besides a short
time that the Russia were written by
David Olidor so who's writing to the
debate all these things.
>> Uh yeah. Yes. Yes. In the memorial would
it would be
in the sess would be feldman. Of course,
sometimes he would talk it over with
with Ravier or with other people. Uh
again, we only he would only ask
questions that you you you can't write.
It's basic things. It's negated to the
bureau. U talking about the Reb's
corrections.
There's also very interesting
is besides everything the main thing is
the rebel
and for instance here was a mimer
of shin
the mimer the reb was mia was not even
given in double space was given in
single space like kind of anrois without
misus was written by and the reb
mentioned the
lmani
The wipes off the scenes and then says
it says twice and then goes on and
explanation
what's
leani uh you know when you copy a
altogether two words why would you take
them out for two words to write a game
so the way it was written
was twice written in that page the reb
circled them around both and took them
out the two words he said instead we
should put in a gamer and the rebro on
the side
on purpose I did not say those two words
if I may add simple explanation this was
it wasn't necessary for the be was you
don't mention anything of in the ding of
shus of sham things like this
um there's a famous one also that wrote
This is a Yeah, another one. But
>> yeah, that one's very famous.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Which again,
how you supposed to write a sentence?
You can't blame people, right? What are
you going to write?
>> Right.
>> What? But
>> is the way it is. If the Reb quotes, you
know, a few words from they'll write the
whole thing.
>> Not the whole. write a minimum a
complete sentence something. That's the
style of
>> Yeah. And you wouldn't think it would
make a would make a difference even in
mug
>> as as we know. By the way, another thing
as we know um
that the Reb, we learned it from the Reb
when you make corrections, you do not
erase the name. You circle it around and
take it out.
Also
uh the Reb never erased a name of a
person even when the Reb would take out
his for other people I've seen uh
will mention names in those uh had all
the stories all the about from the and
the of the
would take out names he wouldn't erase
them here is very interesting holy one
that the mimemer the Reb wanted to er
Take out the words. You know, this is
not the name that you're not supposed to
erase. It's not a person's name.
What do we know whatus is? The Reb did
not erase it twice. He just took it out
uh circling it around and taking it out
to the side. Um
concerning uh and this something uh you
say this concerning March.
Um
so the rebas
sometimes reb
something you got to take it out if you
don't find the for in
this I think
over there in the mime it says the reb
says as as my father-in-law the fic reb
writes that all also women are obligated
learning.
Obviously there was a number there but
in those years there was no way in the
world to find it. I think I went to
Rabbi Weinberg he says he remembers that
there was in Poland whether it was in at
somewhere letters to Frederick
but there was no way for us. was much
years before the eagle skater started
coming out. Where you going to go search
for that? uh was left empty
and the Reb wrote yesto
albonis al said there's a printed letter
to to
ri that organization we know now today
everything is there there was
organization
kabad in ri and f and the letter was
printed in those years but doesn't mean
anything it's still existed in our time
for sure. Not maybe in the rebro
if you don't find the
to take out the whole and also the
number. Don't forget to take out the
number. Don't leave a number inside
which refers to the bottom. And then
they wrote to the Reb, they found a
letter, similar letter or something. But
the Reb said this is not what he's
talking about because he doesn't mention
about learning. It's a letter to the to
the bonus
about their activities but doesn't say
that they're obligated. Reb says, "No,
take out the
I would like to um Okay, since we're in
Marus, I wanted to go back to some
technos. We'll continue. Uh here's a
very interesting clawless decay
instruction, a general instruction by
the Reb concerning Marameis in the
Shabores.
Again, it's from a tape. Uh the Reb says
there he spoke about the famous Moshel.
The Reb calls it always the mush of the
liver. That thing that you lift that you
want to lift lift a building. You start
from the bottom then you could lift the
whole the top floor also. But the Reb
mentioned there that motel of of lifting
ab from the bottom and he connected it
with trades.
But the question was whether the source
what the Rabb is referring to is the
famous mimer in ter in the beginning of
ter or inov which it says differently
over there it says doesn't say liver it
says a different word in in jargon
something. So the rebba answered there
as follow. He says
when you make says there are several
categories under several
intentions what theb has when he says in
one reason for
he wanted where is the source of what
you said.
The second one is
you want to expand and deepen the
understanding of bying to a place that
says in that case not necessarily where
it says like this I could be to a
opposite which from there you could take
out a detail or a something addition
we Remember sometimes for bringing that
on purpose.
It says the opposite to see if people
will will catch
and uh there was something um
the Reb said it's a very interesting
thing. It's concerning about
the
Reb said something
and a certain explanation
and uh they asked the Reb that
in the famous letter of the Fredb
printed in
it says something differently. It wasn't
actually the only time that we asked the
Reb that here he spoke like this and
here he spoke differently. So the
answered I ponyim there's 70 ways to
learn terra and you people found in this
case two and you're surprised there's
two I remember a similar thing the
par I think it's the first time the
spoken it was then that piece was
um and said this is then another year
said differently
And we asked a question
that says over there differently and
I've answered kind of if I repeat again
the same thing I said before what's
what's the point is brought to you by
we live in a chaotic world a world where
for us
we do not have the ability to hear and
see the on a daily basis yet we know
that theb is very much with us and is
alive and thriving more than ever
before. One needs to only tap into it.

Thank you very much. Enjoy the rest of
the podcast. So about it's a lot very
fascinating about the manus the whole
idea is to
know like it's like not a common thing.
Maybe today it is but you know
definitely wasn't then to have manus.
Yeah, actually not only the idea of
making maris is much the reb's way also
the style how to say mar is like that uh
you make the the the chapter a kama and
then the pik is like bober and people
like this more modern people that made
their work properly they are the ones
who did I'm sorry to say technical way
they did very good books uh when it
comes to sources of things.
So what about um
what about from the whatever answers
from the Reb about uh about like the
sign and the way the are written and
things like that.
The Reb wanted
that anything written, it doesn't matter
what he spoke, what you what you're
writing is for people to read, to
publicize, it has to be written well in
an organized way, beginning and end,
things should make sense. And one of the
things the rabbi didn't like when it it
looked to him that um
what was written is kind of very close
to a a word toward the transcript even
though this was written kadesh. a few
samples here and one of the memory that
the Reb uh was Miette,
but the Reb wrote on top
that the sign
that the way it was written the the
signon the style of writing is shocking
and in parenthesis that is practically
copied word for word of
of the tape I
actually that mimer because of the being
so um
so sharp about it even though thoroughly
we did not printed we asked that time
he was to rewrite it was done but it was
given in again but uh most probably the
reb doesn't have time to work twice on
something
>> so that m was never put out with the
debz Uh
I think later on in the terrace
they put it in in the office they added
all the rabbis corrections
into the mimemer the way it's written
well.
>> Mhm.
>> Uh some other mimer. This is
from
the Reb kind of commented. It wasn't
prepared by Rael. The Reb commented
Mer. It's written in in a strange
kadesh. You're talking about my reb this
is a different topic than
>> No no I'm talking
in the years of the secret not in the
project of the memorial which started
inv I'm talking
>> so sometimes here and there
>> so sometimes the reb would take a of the
memorial and decide to to on his own
>> there there was two ways yeah it
happened sometimes that han was given in
and lucky enough. We didn't think to
give it in MG. didn't have the in that
case we would have to type it kill
double space make it easier make better
maris
uh but most times we didn't do that from
time to time it was a special mimer
would come and decide to write up the
mimer and give it into the reb sometimes
reb sometimes not but some sometimes the
rebba wanted to be mia mimemer were good
or not good he was mad but he wasn't so
happy and and this mimemer
Uh the Reb added the word an it was
obvious that the Reb meant to be Mad and
we did give it in and the Reb put the
date on the Povo.
Um in general a lot of times that the
reb's expression concerning his aos
the reb would say that when I fix it
doesn't mean there was after I fix this
is good like here's one expression and
explanation on Russia that was written
up based on the reb's answers
and the reb wrote the sign the style of
writing is funny
I took out only fix the most important
which means when the Reb fixes it
doesn't mean that the whole thing is
completely good. I mean it's mugged it's
printed. Um
here's interesting of of things that um
>> and this is for the hanas that that had
some here's even in the mug they were
prepared and according to the ro of the
rabbi beginning after sim rabbi go given
over to rail was the man that wants
should give him in
>> after the heart attack
>> that they should give him in uh the
In the for
the Reb says as this and this is it
brings out the specialty of a way they
wrote it in Hebrew
it's expressed is and the Reb said on it
I mean I don't know if Re would have
another way to to write over those words
in in in in Yiddish. Um
in in Kadesh. But the Reb wrote in that
did you ever find this expression
something similar which we all know in a
lot of the memorial the beginning of the
paragraph is
>> Mhm. And it's normal language but here
was a mimer basuk stru came out into
that the reb circled around in two
paragraphs over there it says
this is also the the connection now mind
you sh is loa
but nobody wrote
voui it's like you know we're not used
that but the rebu
vizoui. Why would I write vizoui?
But the Reb commented on the two times
in the two paragraphs one after the
other he circled that and he writes like
this.
There's a whole beginning of about the
difference something that is written in
lotion of
to those people they couldn't care about
it. I'm sure that time they they fixed
it visi was very unusual to write in a
mimer visoui
but I was going to say that you do see
it I guess it was afterwards after this
time it could be for also but usually
>> what h do you remember what changed miss
>> I don't remember it could be checked
right away
>> in the m but I I didn't check at this
moment
and one of the sikas
Now concerning the way to write a uh
translation
and this is very important for today's
day uh where people are giving out
supposedly aan
a transcript from tape is something else
when you make a
in Hebrew and you write word for word
here's what the reb wrote and one of the
sikas of the ear of our earlier years
I'm talking about those years.
I said several times that the
intention of capping something is
the people should understand the
contents of what was spoken.
There's no point on being exact copying
word for word which once you do that
it's not anymore that could be read.
It's rather
it's a list where you copied words. It's
not a anymore. It's not readable.
Says there's a must that you should
translate is free translation what's
called
this has to be done by someone who knows
the language and the digduk to write it
properly and someone who knows the
language of
writing things of terra not of
newspapers.
>> What's the lesson? Yes,
>> that's that's what's the
CL.
I want to go back a little bit um
to um
to the technical
uh part.
Uh in all those years from when we
started from
a good friend of mine, Ari Vice
would be the typist. Those were tai
brothers of course till the end of meai
in 1987 there were no computers at least
that time started them as a different
kind but
I'm talking about the regular so was a
typewriter uh he would situs
on in the day he would sit the whole
night or whatever is 12 hours non-stop
not practic not getting up from his
chair he was a good typist
um
and then Um
later on the size of Danus all the years
was 8 12 by 11 and you would staple it
in the corner.
Um
one time sometimes the end of Zion
sometimes that time um Shiv had come
back from Poland. He was sent over by
the Reb to get out Frederick Rabb's
library. when he came back he um he the
library arrived later the reb went
before the reb came out from 77 he went
without anybody seeing just a few people
to the library to check it um the reb
I guess by the room the reb gave him the
han the mimer of shabas
with the mimer the reb brought with
kadesh bashmer shab kadesh
and signed his name and the Reb told
them
when we heard that the which we didn't
consider our to be anything we were kind
of embarrassed it was done for the
people when we heard that the
Reb gives it and signs his name on it we
decided we're going to change the size
make it a more normal acceptable size
not a page like this 8 and 1 half by 11
but a pamphlet and the Reb was asked
like to give it out the exact rabbi what
size they want to make it like the
regular size of of which is a little bit
bigger than 8 and 1 half by 11 folded
something like this take an 8 9 by 11
folded uh the Reb did not agree but
something the Reb wrote something like
uh
it seemed that the Reb agreed to part of
it but not fully. We already had asked
the Reb. Then we decided to um to ask
the Reb and we wrote everything the
sizes everything was written to the Reb
how it's going to look and we started
making it from then which is from
Shabasan Tubov because we found out that
information a little bit later the
Fabring started coming out in the size
was called the 6 by9 actually
uh 6 12 by 9 and a half this if you have
not cage you have the original ones that
were bound in lame lame me from the
third volume of of of it's a different
size.
>> So you were publishing Moso then
>> that's what's interesting. No, by so by
the end of the year practically people
that bought us
every time it came out came up to us.
They brought us out their single sikas
and if they were missing something if we
still had it we put it in and we took
all the sikas put them together
practically you would have the bas name
written on top of each and uh we gave it
to those cats book binding the famous
book binding in Williamsburg they did
the rabbis they would do everything you
needed something nice with a hard
coverver binding was very expensive was
each book was done by hand
and we bounded for the bim the same
thing lit lame
after that never was there a complete
year.
Lame also missing a little bit.
Uh but the marmicus was still done
inside the in parenthesis
which disturbs the reading as everyone
knows. Also when you write the maramokim
inside you can't write a lengthy or two
maramas you have to make it as short as
possible it uh doesn't let you
>> why was that done because typewriter you
can't do it in the bann
of all it wasn't easy look when you look
today they're giving out now all the
from the early years the the pimilia
they invaded
everything put in inside till started
doing on the bottom. How do you make on
a typewriter hagas on the bottom?
It's not easy. You have to calculate how
much text to type on top, which means
you first type up the marus separately
and you keep on typing the inside and
keep on putting on the bottom your page
measuring do I still have time to add
another line inside so it should fit on
the bottom.
>> Mhm.
were inside at that time happened to be
after the
which the spoke that time about uh about
pre prime minister begging
and
came out
a while a little bit later was the whole
and
we should give it out in a madur basa uh
I don't think maybe it was given over to
us not in print. So we redid retyped the
whole faban took out the words
on the cover. We added big words
and
I if I'm not mistaken the
marked off that we should put down the
he put numbers we should put them on the
bottom. was another like this
>> I don't understand. So why was
>> nob after it was printed as built the
whole
>> so but we didn't give it in type setting
I'm sorry to explain we didn't do it
type setting like regular like whatever
we just retyped it on a type of that
whole
>> why didn't you do like
>> maybe we I don't remember now if was
that it wasn't
whatever not always with things clear
sometimes for instance Um there were
times the rebels a few
says no this is not to be printed. He
called it the rebels
means just not fully just sometimes we
did we use the the famous saying uh when
a person gives you a finger he grabbed
the whole hand. If the Reb made a few
corrections we took the guts and types
it and gave it in. If we're lucky, the
reb put his stamp on it and hey, you
have a mug.
That one we retyped it and we put the
horse on the bottom. But we used for
each one a separate line shortly
thereafter.
We decided we got to start doing the all
the hanokas with the marmis on the
bottom. But of course, we made the march
typed consecutively like one with the
maramokim and then two. And the same
thing would type up a whole page or two
with all the cameas and arise would keep
on typing the measure to see how much do
I have to leave to be able later to to
type up on the bottom what I typed
already there. should fit in. Um and but
there was also issue unlike the the the
what's coming out now that first council
could see
those green pamphlets. How did you make
a number for a footnote? You had to type
a number lift a tiny bit the role of the
type numbers a little bit higher but the
numbers are very big. We couldn't have
this. So we went and to a printer to
whether it was Empire Press or Fusion
Goldberg and they typed us up a sheet of
numbers from one to 200 or to 300. We
took that sheet and made very sharp good
photo copies of it and then we would um
we had a machines called a waxer. We put
in wax it was plugged in would melt the
wax. That's how the old was done. How do
you pay stop the columns and the bottom
the orus? It didn't come like this from
the computer till who knows when. So we
would
>> saying if it's before print it would be
stuck on.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Sure. And figure out you uh
the guy would have the whole roll of the
s on his shoulder. Take a look how much
fits inside how much the other came
where do I stop and like this kept on
pasting it on. So we did the same and we
would have to cut the numbers tiny. Each
number took up very little place.
Exactly. No space. There's a special
knife for that. And carefully take that
number with our finger with a nail and
put it on there and press it down hard.
It shouldn't fall off. And by typing, we
didn't leave a whole space empty. We
would leave you go the type of halfway
back to um to uh leave enough space if
it's one number, two numbers. I like
this whole s and of course if you would
sometimes later after it was printed or
even before if you weren't careful the
number would fall off and would end up
having a sik it it actually happened
once this was a interesting story that
um
>> one second the but the started having at
the bottom
>> yes from that on right after the
happened the story of so we started
making small pamphlets in as I said in
toshin
>> that's the way it's printed in is
printed like that
>> yeah the big pages they enlarge it but
of course it's like this
>> look okay
>> maybe some but they already printed from
a printed one numbers couldn't fall off
but the original was was a problem
>> okay so what happened so the number fell
off
>> no it happened one this okay happens
happens it happened once a suddenly
asked that he wants to be the forbran
yet wasn't written up. It was written
up. The whole was written up by Raov
Feldman typed but by the typist he was
only up to like the first 10 15 pages
and as it is 108 we gave him in the part
that was already a photocopy of the part
that was already typed up nice and the
rest was a double space the way it is
typed with inside and actually whole
thing but we didn't realize I mean we
wouldn't even think was said we should
give him right away
that the 10 15 pages
that were given to the Reb, the typed
ones. It was the fing wasn't finished.
So there were no numbers there. There
were footnotes on the bottom with
numbers and the Reb wrote there.
It's missing inside where the where
belongs the number. We didn't realize
that or even if he would, we couldn't
hold it back to do it. Uh
um
>> because you do manus at the end.
>> No, but before he starts,
>> see the numbers are put in later. Yeah.
The last thing where you finish the
whole you start pasting in.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh at that time there was
>> that's how you do it today too.
>> What?
>> Today too you wait till the last version
till you uh
>> No, you could make before then you take
gets updated automatically. Everything
>> it gets complicated. Okay. Whatever.
>> Yeah.
>> It depends if if you work with word
everything is automatic. One of the
reason I still work with W even though
nobody does this because it updates the
numbers. It shouldn't be a mistake. In
the other program tag, I don't know what
lack uses today. Tag. Um, when you make
a double number
in word, he has cross reference.
>> Mhm.
>> You catch the same number. In their
program, sometimes you see there's a
double number. It's the wrong one cuz
later numbers were were added and all
the numbers got advanced. But this
number stayed u the wrong one. Okay,
we'll uh we'll go back. Um
now
even before the contra of the winter
what you call the came out called
even before that the reb time when the
rabbi is
the adds
allegian or on the on the pages what
were by the end and the way you add it
is with a star or with two stars or with
three stars then later you have to
straighten it out. Actually when you
look in the time before computers
there are chemist with stars because the
added and there was no way to retype set
the whole
because the numbers changed it would
cost too much money. But since uh you
could always see in a when there's a
star, you could figure that the one with
a star is not the horror the Reb added,
but another one. They didn't want people
to know which horror the Reb added. They
would change around a few numbers. So,
but you could recognize always which one
is the Reb, which one is not.
>> So, the star,
>> but the Reb didn't like the stars. Isn't
the star like and that's
andorillian
there there's no choice mostly it's one
star two stars three stars but at least
the numbers inside and all the horror
should be uh insisted we should
straighten out uh take out the
>> didn't like it
>> yes um
>> the full of it
>> in what is full of stars
>> in those years there was no way to do it
was It was before computers. Mhm.
>> Um
I'm talking about before
even uh when word came out I mean word
came out I think to shindal even when
msdas came out but still the way the
secrets were done msdas was looked like
a typer it spread it out it wasn't types
the type set was still done by a machine
called am var typer the machine costed
$100,000
uh
>> you say
would be too much work,
>> right? To redo the whole to redo
everything.
>> That's but if there would be a lot of I
guess they would redo
um
so for instance and also
as old Reban knew there's nobody
responsible kind he has to take care of
all the technical things not I mean the
reb could have known already mostly but
he didn't rely on it. So for instance,
which came out
on top,
take out the stars,
put them in improper order
>> as hard as
>> one, two, three, shouldn't be one with a
star. Also after the rebels get the
first time, Rabel would add more things
based on what the Reba fixed, he would
have to ask add this or that or and so
on. There was tons of stars like
>> asterk.
>> What?
>> It's called an aster.
>> Asterric. Yeah, I gave you v.
>> Yeah. Yeah, you said it
>> good. Nine.
I'm sorry. I didn't go to all. I don't
speak English. which I never
um and again in that same mimer
which came out for
the sukusion
in the pard again the reb wrote not the
paper attached again
again remind us remember take out theim
and make the numbers one after the
There was a a a issue with the M is that
>> one second when
>> so when the reb was all done through
basically
>> the has a say that's separate and then
but then then the
>> current yes that was doing it through
>> it happened rarely here and there that
uh they were busy could
The famous
80 years
whatever is how many years
was it was 80 years
>> 80 years spoke
>> I think whatever the famous and that
time prepared it so they prepared
>> so once in a while the
>> if they would prepare
It rarely happened. They they were busy
enough.
Um
so the Reb would ask to now the
especially when it was the reb so the
Mus were very small just every number
was like a post a small and especially
when the mimer is is is a full column
it's not two columns like he looks on
the bottom it's all empty and the rabbit
didn't like it. He wanted the Mus should
go
one after the other. For instance, um
was
to
going back to not only did the Reb say
the Reb went himself. It was the typed
one before the type setting. He went
with a pen attached every end of the
previous to the next one. every horror
like the 20 horse or so were there he
attached them for instance even in the
later of
so of the
one after the other consecutively
one next to the other
and then again shortly thereafter since
the reb thought he might not do it the
reb wrote not in separate lines If
you're making it in a format cotton
which means either you're going to print
uh children's come out a little booklet
it's also wide
uh then they had asked the reb that what
they're giving in is actually they're
making it a regular wide format like a
regular surface
a full width of 26 spas if you know what
that is and therefore they asked the
rabbit could they leave the mus
like this
and the Reb says no since you're not
doing in two columns by two columns
doesn't look empty actually I think to
Nandal already existed
uh a program for word a little bit later
that was called um hame word was a guy
in winners he would sell for them he
sells he sells also that a lot of these
programs for years existed a program but
we at least didn't even have all the
years that program. So the Reb wrote
that since it's in one not in two
columns so you should still do the
Now we're going to go to the so-called
keta of the part of the REB spoke about
or other topics not um
directly Russia so
>> the world the world the worldly topics
>> it started
uh
the first time the rebal talk about that
they understood the rabbi speaking about
was shabas I think even as shabas before
started speaking mikas but it wasn't so
>> before that the never spoke about
general
>> it was but not so look in the years
every spoke about moodi
but those things first of mostly didn't
come out And uh mind you I don't even
think by those
>> he didn't
>> he didn't and people that said there
when didn't nobody else was going to in
front of that I that's that's obvious um
when says sometimes he stops he would
ask whether was I'm talking about even
the later years
of Feldman usually
would say if he
um nobody was going to say okay now this
I'm going to say this didn't exist he
was the
they wouldn't have to do it either and
also it started started speaking about
the mat
and that part of course uh would go in
in the by the way in all the time later
this part could have been a half hour
there were times later on that the part
about
was 45 minutes over an hour and even in
the time when it was 45 minutes
sometimes it could have been that in
quantity in amount of pages the
would amount to half of the amount of a
whole faban but this was part of the
fabring and uh we did it
sometimes before
uh Rabikov approached uh
one of us and gave over that the Reb
said I mean obviously the name of the
Reb that what the Reb speaks about was
does not belong in the
to us this was the end of the world it's
like was a decree
that we're not going to put in big part
of the
so we asked them I mean how are the
people in the world going to know what
the Reb spoke
so he says those that need to know will
Oh, I I guess he was referring to
someone. What's Chabas calling? First
there were recordings, but he referred
to someone uh calling after Shabas
giving over to to Ber Kavul, which was a
spokesman. And now we we somehow
uh
kind of begged for life. We and we
suggested that we're not going to put it
in in the part of Fabranga, but
separately as Aeta actually this
>> what's it called? It's called
>> it's called in every Fabranga. You go by
the back starting from on you have the
whole after that it starts somewhere the
politics I'm start to call it politics
was and it actually it helped because um
like this you could finish much faster
you could leave the ket for a month
later you know when you'll have time it
start didn't stop giving out the
interesting enough that already
I'm sorry the first time the spoke
pushing
and uh at that time already the rebels
the part about
the
>> but the rebs not to put it in
>> but we most probably thought that
because it's coming out the doesn't want
that should be it should be we I think
we typed it up separately as without the
word
spoke
a bunch of times
>> every time in MS was like
there was sometimes by the by the
avoid like
but every time you know it was mish
it was always like that it was always
separate.
>> Yeah. From then on it started being
separate in hanm
when when the reb would add sometimes in
savvy kadesh
uh a piece like they asked a question
they didn't understand and the reb would
answer kind
the reason also is because I I didn't
say everything and the reb would add a
whole piece and sometimes the reb would
give the instruction that this piece you
should put it in put it out in yiddish
right up as normal part because it's
it's a major part of the beer. But on
the other hand, it happened for instance
in Shabas
which was a weekday for
and
uh a paragraph was prepared important
paragraph to the understanding of the s
prepared based on the reb's answers in
Saviad and that time the Reb wrote
Harama
tape exclamation marks several people
have a tape how could you add this piece
of
uh there's a tape And therefore the says
all above you should add in written of
course
and because it's
>> I have a question.
>> Yes.
>> All these answers you have them or the
other people had them.
>> I
everything written here I have photo
copies.
>> So you kept everything from then
basically.
>> What do you mean? But the people in got
copies from No, they got always kadesh
here and there maybe something tiny.
Um
never even got to us that the Reb
was Mia.
>> So someone has all these uh answers.
>> Yes. Yes, I'm sure.
women. Yeah, I have uh mostly I have
copies most not everything. I mean uh
mind you there were no copy machines. I
don't have to tell you that.
Maybe it is. Forget about mosquito. We
when we used to print the circus
ourselves
there was a plate maker. It wasn't metal
plates with negatives.
It was a machine like a copy machine
that had a roll of thermal paper it's
called
but that was not a regular copy used to
be thermal paper. It's a kind of copies
that if you open it up after a few years
it's gone all what was written on it.
That's one issue. But for the printing,
this was a play a heavier role that you
would make a picture of the page and
that you would put on the machine. But
since that wasn't metal, it was only
able to print a few hundred before it
disintegrates, falls apart. Uh but
that's too much of the technical things.
Um
uh concerning the pas do of the mug
cases used to be a style we copied what
was in the olden years we type up
whatever and the regular lotion used to
be that um would be that would be
paragraph we hereby give out this said
this and this for next paragraph would
say that the added im famous which come
on the on the bottom. Um
which is the dated we all know
usually
dated
that time and after that was
the heart attack.
Um but in that s the
>> Reb give all the dates for all the
>> you tried to get the date which here's
in order to give the date you gave in
the pesovo
when you gave in the gallis for the
second time but at a later stage
uh when it was only one ago you had to
remember always to give in the pesovo
when you're giving in the first time and
therefore uh much later not from not
from my time and also not from Lahak
uh from the later years. Uh some of them
I could imagine that uh I'm just
guessing that the date is not even the
rabbis
because they never managed to give in in
the the magazine we when we have the
date in the in the editorial.
So we we always use a date that the
gave.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Sends me a date every month before we go
to pray.
>> That's that's how we do it.
>> That's very nice.
I'm happy to hear that. And now must be
the rabbi took out that time the whole
paragraph took it out even though the
rabbi did put horos
and from then they stopped but we
stopped it only contraim but when
suddenly the rebels
unusual
so this already not what they send in
contraim so we must have taken looked at
another pastor and that thing stayed
again back then for instance by pun we
realized that we took it out but then
later uh here and Because not always the
the pressure of work
was that sometimes we didn't remember
what happened. Uh when the work so
pressuring that when you're doing next
thing you forgot what happened yesterday
because you can't see working
this the way it was. Um
at the time later I saw already much
later
that the Reb corrected that
paragraph. It said again
and
the Reb fixed as follow said they took
out his name and he wrote
valid for the benefit of the reader and
learner.
the March
come on the bottom see nothing to do to
him
um several things about
the memorial I'm talking about before
the project of the memorial for instance
the bosan zan um was prepared
according to the reb's instruction
shabas and moz shabas and the reb gave
an instruction ction that the min inside
should be the one that was said more
pear everyone was able to see and hear
to hear and the shabas the one the
things he said shabas should be put on
the bottom
and speak prepared it like this wasn't
easy we had to type up bottom and then
chemist on the bottom calculate
everything where this number goes for
here like we have chemist for the for
keep track
and we didn't think the Reb was going to
be Mia at that time. It was typed up
regular in a small format which was uh
the memorum were always like it's called
legal which is 8 and 1 half by 14 bent
in half with the small size of the books
of the memorum
and uh we were going to printed it was
going to be printed next day I'm sorry
to say on my own I had enough
I ran we had no copy machine as I told
you I ran upstairs in the ka in the back
70 I made a copy of those little pages
and without asking anybody's permission
I gave it to Rabbi Gro to give it to the
rabbis kind of we're going to print it
and lucky enough next morning the m came
out and it was mugik so was to another
the gave out that mime to theim they
were going
to this was the second group of I think
I don't remember. Um
all those weeks spoke from the room. So
there was a very obvious mimer.
There was no specific part of the SA
that the way it looks to my eyes that
was a mimer. But Raona gave over a name
of the Reb that he should make a mimer
and the mimer is supposed to be based on
um
and that's
in those years most of them
>> I mean spoke just one thing one long
thing there was no right
>> it's a different whole story. I'm see
was it's interesting that when the Reb
started for bringing finally
um downstairs
he started again saying
I think
even though before that used to be
because the Reb
was proving that he's healthy. Um even
they they weren't going to give in for
bra said they should give in. They
thought that's it. It's going to be
another break now after two years like
times before every two years was was a
break. Interesting.
>> That's your uh that's your uh
>> mind you feel
>> yeah I guess yeah
>> everyone knew that uh that's it. No, I'm
saying about the motor. Why did I be
switched?
>> It's it's very interesting because later
on went back to
>> I know this is for for people to say her
it's not my line. Interesting.
which spoke about
at that night early in the morning from
they called Bura Wolf in he was the the
spokesman to the newspapers
and he was asked by the reb's
instruction to wait till he publicizes
what the reb says because the reb is
going to add another part the reb wrote
a whole bunch of kadesh
but uh most probably
Khan never got a hold It's not the only
thing that for some reason they didn't
think they have to give it over to him
and it's not included otherwise it would
have been included in the too. Maybe
they found it much later
it was printed in
in the magazine. One of the integral
components of being aid are theim and
whether it's
orim
these days give us an opportunity to

So after that we know
after that came the mime
the long mimer
one of the longest memor said it like a
longer in speaking I don't think so and
but till the m was ready by raiel was
already kind of mik was ready in a
different in my opinion the rebel
started with publishing tany That's
that's when the mug stopped. But then
here there was a lot of sikas. Uh the
whole period of time made the contraim
uh the fellow went back to learn
uh he would be here and there to help
out. I would sit and type for
so on so forth and then later after all
things stopped he came back and then
started again built of time again. Savis
of course I think the reb told that the
reb said we should give it in that was
first a night was night from the room
was a mime and a together
was not but was planning to make a he
didn't think the reb wants to make the
whole
and suddenly the starting it's all I
think you could see it online here the
said
he just spoke yesterday it's missing
in now in center whole thing and
is already built has a structure and you
have to start adding see him see him
everything and then uh
but that actually said before the rabbit
took out the part of it's um a very
interesting uh thing which we always
know it's not I have one but that's
something the said by the
once he said it it's holy
But you could see here for instance in
theb had written in
that it says
that's what said and
in says
And then
it says uh
it says
and maybe it should say or something and
then it's already printed and the rabb
settled that some were embarrassed that
that it has to be hard.
So the rebro
to explain
going around and around why
the pro is the way he wrote and so on
and so forth. Once the rebba said wrote
um
talking about the rebad there were times
the rebba asked to give an ammer many
times at many that the rebba asked
it's completely holy theb asked to give
an am we got instruction whether by or
and we gave in and the rebb was not
we'll never understand what for instance
gave us that wants to
the I think it was three
of
and of
and wasn't
we uh I think it was we gave in those
and uh they didn't come out
after a while uh well we didn't print it
we're waiting maybe after a while I
walked over obviously the I did the
dirty work. I walked over to Raikov and
I asked him uh so he says I should write
it on the paper
my request what I want. So um so we
typed up a paper that according to the
row we received from Rabbi I guess the
Reb said um we should give it to my and
we asking what to do now. You have to be
very carefully write to the Reb. We
asked the Reb what should we do now? The
Reb's answer was something like this.
Did you already ask him what to do? Did
you already finish learning everything
came out till now? At least part of it.
This is this is uh what it is. Yeah.
>> So it came out.
>> No, the didn't give it out.
>> They came out.
>> Yeah. Then that's it. It's like all the
times he used to ask a question.
That's the way the regular language
explains would around the world
make a comment. He didn't understand ask
you was a time they stopped and started
writing a different language so not to
get uh but this is part of part of the
work.
um a few um about talking about the
today.
Um
this had nothing to do with came out of
the the jubile of 50 years of the
rabbis.
It was I was working the but suddenly
Rabon calls me and he tells me that the
Reb said that if someone will prepare
and give him in the mimer he'll be Mia.
I was going to ask I ran to label Alen.
I asked him to write it up. Actually, we
found out years later whenever it was
that the Reb had already that
a white printed countress of all the
built connected with
and the Reb already had because
which is a relative a good close friend
of the Reb asked the Reb someone asked
the name of the Reb told that person he
could ask himself he could ask me and he
asked and actually went on his mir not
only my way it's written there like the
way
but we didn't know about it was already
a go from the nobody told us and
was
and
gave it out that mimer and actually in
the pardo
it says over there that the mimer is
musid
on the m of pest this was a beer on the
m of pas
But the Reb fixed in the pastor
and he wrote like this
the wrote over there
like basically it's not the
how do you know what's mus what not you
are writing with the
writing that we think it's not the first
time the did the same and some other m
like this even though in the m the way
was at first it said of their be and the
other part it says be also that of
because this was obvious to everyone but
the says how do you know what it is?
This is this is my
now um
I would like to start about the memor
project
of theim.
Uh so basically the so I spoke to about
this that over the years there were
various that were
the whole the is basically those and
then all the rest is the what you're
calling the project of
right sure even in in in that first
volume
I mean
it's very interest
right before sunset that
the rabbi said and prepared it and was a
big sales by the people that Friday
night I'm saying my own
Friday night in the back of whatever
brings they were doing by wasling the
people were hooked over there to her and
was so hooked over there and standing
and watching people that came out early
came down early to goal shabas he walked
And the people took time for the people
to realize is coming in for shabas. And
I had a feeling that time that because
of that the reb actually the m came out
after that.
>> What's because what
>> because the reb had so much
see that people areing
and the my own kind of
see was to my reb
wanted to get everywhere if possible
tishov. Um I was upstairs. I wasn't
working those years. Uh was sh day but I
was there. It was a great in in Vad and
they were printing. So I took one of
those memor before it was yet the dirty
one that he measures to see if it's
folding properly printing on the proper
place. I had one in my pocket a dirty
mimer with ink and I was downstairs when
the rabbi came up from kinis
and walked came out from the elevator
and he turned to label gr and he says is
the mimer here already punk standing
there so I grabbed out I had in my
pocket I gave it to Rabi Groner to give
it to the rebel later they gave him a
good printed m and then I went uh to the
airport we tried to find someone to try
to get it somewhere in Canada ransom not
so simple shv the rebels Even though it
wasn't given in it was like given in but
prepared it after that happened
>> you're going to remember
>> I'm going a few single ones
>> but then the point is the whole v in
those years only to my rebels I think
put a few comments but they didn't come
out as it's not printed as mugik the
whole it's interesting that the
there was like a sed obviously the
started and stopped but there's a
regular s the
Ma but my mother didn't have any seder
really
>> no this was the seder was only after is
to give in before to the reb I'll soon
come to this whole ideal is you're
preparing from years ago for this shabas
>> my is after the rebu
I'm talking everything what came out at
the time the whole only two one
the other one
which was only found I don't know where
it's none of my business was found after
gimmel tamos
um
only a few memorial the whole of only
one mug I'm talking everything before
the project of the memor
all together one mimer came out
and only one more mimer in in in the
project now um we always tried this was
try to after whisking to get out from
the rabbit something
I wasn't already working in the since
P time I got married
>> since then around Niss time is a project
I was still involved in things but I
decided since coming up um
uh
that's going to be finished by
found that maybe we should take the
mining
said by the completion
of
and give it in. This was of the style of
I I'm not I don't write I worked it off
very much and then fixed it. I typed it
up and gave it in. A short while later
um I meet Rabbi Goner. Rabbi Goner says
who is asking for the m give out my m
who is requesting it. I never heard of
anything like this you know and someone
else to request once he gives out what
am I doing now? I went to pass away but
it I mean you didn't realize that it was
an interesting thing that you on your
own gave you a minor
>> the choice to give out whatever he wants
but
>> it never happened. I mean, usually
there's a goof that that gives it to
>> that that that wasn't I don't believe
that was the issue. But why is the reb
suddenly giving out the mimer?
>> Mhm.
>> So I went but I couldn't tell what
exactly is going on here. This is all
things that uh today you could share it.
They share everything today. And I asked
them I told him kind of something. What
I asked from him was I need an empty
stationary of biska
with your signature on the bottom. I
need to type up a letter there.
He looked at me like suspicious. What am
I trying to like something? He looked at
me like I knew him from before. I knew
him well. Uh but I kind of half words
and he gave me I typed up at settle in
his name that is asking the reb
to the Reb and my lock my masle the
mimer. Okay, we're preparing the m for
second ago. Obviously
it says
yeah
the takes and cuts off the whole
um pas most of it writes simple as that
and whatever the rest of it
now uh what I do I asked what I do I
told something and I said we decided
we're going to tell our Minkitz you get
the whole hagosha for all the contraim
he's going to be asher for the simra and
that was good enough after that I said
to myself look if if
for mimemer why not you stamos
I had the mime I kept copies of things
that Khan would give in other years or
which never came out which I kept copies
I had a m of sata which was prepared on
the request of the
which was prepared by Rabbi Alang and I
took it as it is.
Was so bad that uh at the time the Reb
mentioned he was basing it on a mimer.
We guessed we guessed it was because of
it says that rebro
that pro capital of when he passed away
but we weren't sure but I just gave it
in as I went was that time in the cat I
came back and gave out the mug of course
and tap he wrote the the
like exclamation mark like of course I I
added all the missing I updated
Everything everything was already many
minutes for this is this is 10 years
later
after that I decided you know
also and then the rest is history
and all those came to
because uncorrectly in the safe
you have the m of of of
The two and the num and the mimer of
sukus and the mimer
all not with the name countress.
The reb was shown I gave into the reb
have it a shlat a big shlat printed
countress.
The reb approved it and actually was
printed then but by the printing machine
of anahak with the name countress. The
same thing was the sukus was printed
named countress and the same as
but when the vad reprinted it because
they needed to have the holy acus not
the not the old the frank hill of the
regular machines. So they changed the
name the way they liked. Actually by the
time they printed the mukat bay they
already knew that this what the rebba
wanted. They saw the rabbis continue him
and I think and I spoke them lately to
one of those people that they should put
in all those memor also that a safer is
not normal to start from it doesn't make
sense I don't know maybe some reprinted
even though they're it's irrelevant
because we have the terasim
um and then the rest is history started
being
uh of course the work was this was in
addition to other work I also worked for
a living it was day and night sitting
with with Rabiel uh mostly at night
something later I think in the late
um
also helped me out but I think most of
those my most of them I typed I did a
simple maris
um to be able to be able to write
wherever he had a place where was he
going to see it sometimes in his office
sometimes he came to my house.
He came to my house. I sat the whole
night not to be home. I was up with him
just to keep him company and the few
little pieces of silver we had in our
chaff. Most probably didn't have doors
with glass. In the morning everything
was had to be shined again from a new my
kids had no clue in the morning to ask
who is this old man with a white beard
sitting here all night. Uh but this is
what it was.
>> They need to be shined. You saying from
the from the smoke
>> from the smoke of the cigarettes the
whole house was today it's it's
unacceptable reel needed two things to
to write a
he would need cigarettes
and something to eat which always meant
sardines today they don't even sell in
stores I guess it's not so healthy it's
interesting it's actually very healthy
>> you should take I talk about cigarettes
that um
>> the sardines
>> after order he asked wants to buy a pack
of cigarettes I said no now I'm not
buying you anymore. Till now I had no
choice. I had to provide the cigarettes
but now I'm not buying you anymore
cigarettes. Uh as um
so like this uh we worked all the time
put in a lot of time. Um
it's it's something interesting. This
was the m of
that came out of Zion.
Um
this is also invol
as it said over there on each one on the
pard on top was typed.
Um and that one
with the gis the long papers that used
to give to those time was 11 by 17
folded in half. Uh the rebro
safe there is no time to again and
there's no end to it. And then there was
another piece written there about
something specific
and rebro that it seems that their
opinion is that they have to explain in
theorus of this every place in it says
the word y and the of the everything
could be explained and then the said
also there's a of a year question mark
in that letter in the horus is explained
about the shita Uh
at the time I I remember
Rabiel did not exactly know if he was
referring to the mimer even that there
is vod in that mimemer. Could be there
was something else that the rebi used
this
to write. I never went to verify to find
out. I wouldn't be able to either. They
wouldn't tell me. Um
from I said helped out a lot. We ended
up one time she said of some place on
Montgomery. I don't remember. I remember
the basement on crown close to uh New
York Avenue. We sat there for quite a
while and sometimes in the mime also is
uh
he was a fast typist a very young
booker. Would help me out here and there
sometimes a few times to type. Um
now um
now at the same time uh when I worked in
Danas
um
I also besides making I also typed
the transcripts word for word. I believe
the first time was sometimes tam lad but
mostly I started it from beginning of
ladv
everything till um till the last day 99%
a few of them were typed by my good
friend Leel he also knew type
>> transcript of what
>> word for word for in order to make
>> the point is that after was made at
least
from middle of till the end when you
finish you have the next to you you
rewrite write edited properly. When you
finish, you don't keep the transcript.
Nobody thought it's going to come a time
that people are going to want to learn
Yiddish situ tape a video and and follow
a transcript. Therefore, most of the
sikas that I typed, I typed two copies
with a carbon paper and everything went
uh to the so-called Sheamus. Altogether
I saved from those years like 2,000
pages happen to have a box which means
that everything after I started typing
from
that but by I should have had everything
but since I don't have anything so I
have to continue
all the years further also some people
need it today digitally
but uh
>> the tapes have all of this
>> yes but you have to redo and I sit and
type I remember that
because I typed it then and when you
think about the amount of
in the mems
so I have everything finished
the other ones have tons of them
finished but there still so much work
when you think how much work there's
still to retype
>> so you go you you've been going through
all the
>> I've been I I I now I I didn't do it
anymore by order just for interesting
>> why are you doing it for
>> first of all have to be typed word for
word I'm doing all the forak today um
also they're doing it because I think
one day people would like to have the
transcript to be able to uh
>> that's like the from you also right
>> I did for him all the years uh gem I did
all the years uh those are bits and
pieces
um
>> so you're planning on on doing
>> I am I am continuing non-stop. It's tons
of work for an amount of time on the for
of them. You have to have patience. It's
not easy. When you see a ring and when a
fing is short, you could type it much
faster because
you know it's going to take short it
goes faster. When a fing is 50 pages in
double space, 25 in single space or 30
or 35 uh
this only just writing word for word
from the end of me.
>> I tried it once. I tried it once just
for a st experiment. It's very
difficult. Yeah. From the end of I have
to say was already a computer but after
MS DOS finished it went over word I gave
someone to transfer all the secrets. Not
all of them were transferred. Quite a
bit of them I typed and they weren't
transferred but most from the end of
quite a bit.
>> When when is AI going to be able to do
it? I keep on asking people and I do
follow I like to know things even though
it's not my not my level of uh not my
ballpark but I like to follow and I
always ask people if you could do it
from a tape because it's interesting I
remember in the early 70s that by the
airport went by the airport used to be
office nobody sat there and you saw a
machine was called date matrix there
must be someone was typing somewhere
else or speaking I don't some typing and
he was typing the message here in this
office I always
I wish u it could be something for the
tape something else. A lot of them I
have on paper but you can't do it with
that program because it's not so clear
and the amount of mistakes will make
it's not worth it to retype. I actually
it's not negated to this but since you
mentioned this uh for instance all the
weekday fabans
from yudalif till lammed is 1 1200 pages
8 and a half by 11 single space
just ladv itself is like 700 pages
lamemed which you think the rabbit spoke
so little like the rabbits expressed
herself says my mom read note seut what
are we doing there in the office the
light is on the whole night we didn't
know we didn't pay attention that the
rabbit has a window task and soon we
found out the window sheet was by her
sister by the rashag we never paid
attention she was across the roof over
there
>> when I heard from my brother reported
the rabbits and asked him what's going
on the man for rank just 10 minutes why
>> you were sitting in the library
>> no in the office 788 from the apartment
because officially the office is a short
garage
>> but we didn't pay attention of whose
whose house this is I never looked my
brother came and said that the rabbitson
asked him he told the rabbitson it's my
Buddha that's irrelevant but the rabbit
said the man that seminar official was
speaking 10 minutes after was there. So
he explained of years preparing our go.
When I heard that, you know what I did?
I'm sorry to say. Next morning I went,
we had no shades. I bought a shade. So
the window should be closed. That's all
I need.
I should get some reporting. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Reporting.
>> Um so after that less itself is like 900
pages one year. Lame test
is is over a thousand pages. So I I I
took a little break. Alas and I started
working only the pagus which means by
now I typed up all the pagas of the year
all days that are connected with all the
fabranges of days connect in addition
also purim also also shas also but
basically on the order of the pagus and
there's a lot of others which I did here
and there still a lot of work
I I I work as much as I could to do it.
Um
>> Okay. So I have are you you have more or
or I have a question. I know you're also
involved in the
what was what was your involvement in
that
>> since I was working in
at a certain point of vi
asked me to come help him to work on on
the letter. The sed was that
the reb would dictate to raisel
uh pract what the letter should be.
Actually years later
I guess couldn't hear so good. They even
say there should be recordings from him
and obviously if I would ever get a hold
of a recording like this a letter is
like four or five four pages. If you
take a sik a half hour, you could make a
nice beautiful sik
I guess is written for newspaper and
Mandel would I guess type up the the
letter at home. He would add the
introduction like
I don't know whatever it is
and then
>> he would do the English and Yiddish.
>> Uh one one second. No. So I um
so we're going to the Reb would take the
letter that Midell prepared which was
and typed on onion skin paper which
means there was an original plus onion
skin paper but the Reb worked on onion
skin paper and then again the Reb's
corrections it depends how sharp the
pencil were throughout all the years
sometimes
some sometimes you would get
you were able this is an original
stencil
This is onion skin paper which a thin
paper so you could type a few copies.
>> This is a stencil. This is onion skin.
This is
>> onion skin paper which mean you put in a
regular piece of paper and then you put
a carbon paper. You could still buy it
in the store. Maybe they still sell the
carbon paper. And then another one or
two of this so you have a copy for the
Reb maybe.
And the Reb always worked on this one
kind of not to ruin the original. This
is one with a few corrections. Maybe
it's not the first Haggo,
but then you used to see sometimes the
Hagos, you could even figure out
sometimes where the Reb wrote the Hagos,
whether it was written on a table that
was clear for the Reb on top of bunch of
other I'm sorry, a bunch of other things
and uh sometimes you see it was written
from the way the pencil was. We knew it
was written and then I was at home which
the maybe the the the
tablecloth was silk and you see all the
words are kind of broken according to
the way when you write on something
underneath it's soft
>> which is silk soft. So you were you were
typing that was
>> so after the reb was raid would would
write up the dictation prepare a letter
the reb would mir from top to bottom you
could see here tons of big vors there
was very little space for the reb
would type it up
and then you had to make maramous
because the reb would write certain
things I leave empty and you could see
all along I have many samples here I
didn't read them that the reb uh said I
already say that that at Maramokim
another time I have no time to go look
for it. So basically
uh the would leave things empty. You
should put in the maramokim where
exactly the poses and Rabbi Goner asked
me to help him. We went to the Reb's
library.
>> Rabbi Groner would write the manus.
>> He would type up the letter. He would
have to fill in the missing manavis.
>> He he would kept that job always the
>> I guess he had it before also. And we
did that in the library. The library was
before it was end of LV where B started
organized with good library but also
library you don't have like in a small
room all this forum. I helped him a
little bit. Then I remember I think it
was end of um
ladv I don't know I saw I was happening
in downstairs with the magnet in the
room the reb walks out and I see the reb
going home in my calculation the reb was
going to write to work on I see the reb
going home with two volumes of in his
hand I think one of them was
daled which has in the surface the
miktovim
of uh uh of I guess tilt of gimmel.
I'm sorry. I'm going to look a little
bit at the notes
in that one.
Uh came out. He had the the letter of of
it had all the
tilt of
course with his surface
was printed
end of
and then the reb would come back. The
Rebi took it to make Marmakas. He took
the letter with him and he took the
tooth for him and when the reb would
come back next day you had um the letter
would make
and for instance and a certain thing of
like
James would sayiml
which was printed many many years ago
because in that letter
in the reb took home which was from old
year before the
Gim was printed I think was
whatever it is or different things like
this which were the was uh like
something that majority of people don't
even have it anymore like the wrote to
us once a certain
was wasn't yet a liquid wasn't printed
yet and that
famous expression who has a single
liquid of liquid
Uh so it was suggested
that instead of the Reb having to to do
this that we should prepare the simple
Marisukim
Kazal the regular things already the Reb
has in other places
and type it up double space and give it
into the Reb
and the Reb will uh add whatever Horus
he wants whatever chemist he wants and
uh That's how uh it started. We used to
prepare
um and give it into the Reb and the Reb
would add Maricus.
Uh and then after the second typing
which is that's when we did it we did
the march
um
concerning uh by now everyone knows that
um
in special memor
no I want to mention especially in we
knew from here and there that the reb
likes in Every of
should be um shavi
rash all the raim z
certain list of things that had to be
there also the memorum had to be all the
the where this list come from just this
yeah
>> people knew m you could see here and
there in other places that people didn't
think there was m he added some place in
he in a certain place
without even saying where
he has to be
>> always on to this.
>> Yes. and and of course from a certain
year on also his father. Now when you
come to aos
you could find it
you could also
the samely the way it's inali
when it comes to the
harness form of raim were printed and
how do you find something
but we knew the reb at at a certain
point the letter was supposed to be
given to at night before he goes home to
work on it at night but it was missing
after hard work was missing a few
especially the that don't have mas at
those years the marash a few were
missing
and a note was written to the rabbi that
we're still missing this three rabbim
and we were working on it uh at night
trying to find the rebesides It's
everything as we all know he's a
gentleman.
Uh by the morning when the Reb came I
was I was ready with a paper with the
things missing to give it to Rabbi Goner
to give it to the Reb. But the Reb got
it. The Reb gave out what he had
prepared and over there I have a
photocopy of it, a a little paper where
the Reb wrote the names of all the Raim
and checked off which ones he already
had and then the Reb himself filled in
the Rabbim that was still missing when
it was prepared beforehand. Of course,
the Reb would never try his best never
to erase what someone else did. Put in
those also.
Um
and uh like this it um at the used to be
typed and the reb would fix it. We had
to retype it till the third time. We
typed it up nice ready for for the
Rebbit to sign. In those years the
negatives was printed used to be printed
letter used to be printed either was
small be like this or later on two pages
when it became more maris
and when the reb had to sign the letter
in those years the negative machines the
real negatives I don't know why but he
wouldn't be able to pick up a blue
signature if the reb would sign with his
blue pen so they would give the rabbi a
uh a nice easy flow drawing pen, a black
one. This was the of Jacobson Oliver
and together with the letter Ragu would
give in the Reb would sign. But it
happened that the Reb signed the
original with his signature, but he
still fixed a few corrections. What do
you do? In the olden years, you see
letters here and there printed and you
have a correction by hand. But in those
years already, this wasn't acceptable.
So we practically if the Reb would fix
uh a few words in a line, you wouldn't
cut the Reb would want to get ruin the
Reb's original. Someone wanted to keep
it. Uh not me, but someone wanted to
keep it. And um so we would cut it and
type over this one line and a way to
tighten the space. You go half a space
back. So you could add a few words.
Sometimes you had no choice from
wherever the Reb's correction was. He
had to finish typing till the end of the
letter, retyping and then put the Reb's
the last paragraph with the Reb's
signature.
>> Copy paste.
>> Yeah. In the negative, not you wouldn't
ruin with wax the original in the
negative. They did that. Um then at a
certain point and after the letter was
mug a few times now at the same time the
Reb was Mia, he already was writing the
letter in English.
He didn't have the Reb's corrections.
After that I would give out the first
time corrections which were a lot of
corrections
>> because he wasn't there.
>> He was in Long Island. He lived that
thing.
>> So Raon would ask me sometimes to go on
the telephone and remnel didn't hear
good. I would have to scream on top of
scream on top of my lungs tell him the
reb's corrections
and then there made more corrections
more corrections. Therefore, when the
when the English letter came to the Reb
and the Reb was Miiet,
uh this one time I see on a letter that
the Reb writes in it and a certain words
is circled around. It wasn't my job. He
circled around the word and he's asking
to whoever is working that whether it's
from Mandela, whoever is working, he
wants to know if this English word is
the proper translation for that word. I
see it. I see Rabbi L. I said, I I don't
understand. the Reb could write whatever
he wants. He said, "You want to know the
way the Reb works on the letters in
English?" He sits down with the final
printed mol in English, puts it next to
him, puts the English and he compares
them both. That's why this is what
happened later. So read in time of uh
that Rebs kind of commented he's not a
proof reader. They should do it all
themsel.
to to fix the letter. He doesn't have to
look it over the English letter.
>> Mhm.
>> Part of it. Then they had to make
attached to March chemist which had a
caption from the inside just with
numbers and then they would also do it
in
>> stopped be the English
>> I I don't
>> he signed it. I don't know how many
times he was gear but he wanted someone
else to do things to to drive a simple a
proof reader which all the years was
like this. I still remember in the time
they were giving things to the Reb that
they knew they didn't even look if
there's any mistakes. The Reb was doing
all the job to fix the mistakes
in in in in the later years when we
didn't have time. We came right away. We
started doing already type setting while
typing it on a computer. You could fix
it. So we ran Empire Press. But we
didn't have time to look it over. The
Reb is going to Dale. So we would write
on the letter that this letter was not
proof read yet. We're doing it now. The
reb should know there were times the reb
took it was mad on the way to the ahel
and rabbit kins already had a time I
have heavy big telephone in the car I'm
talking about I don't remember when and
he would call me with some corrections
um and on the car on the way
>> yeah on the way um the same thing was uh
they would would write to the reb that
it wasn't looked over that we're going
to do it you know
um like this then started with the
computers
And uh and then again everything was
done under pressure. The miktv must come
out. Uh at certain point there was one
time that I even remember what it is.
It's interesting. Uh I think the wrote
something about
the issue was whether it says
or
>> in those years where we going to look
for these things we know it's a computer
know nothing or the library it was would
be impossible.
No, but we don't say that no that did
not put in
>> but made a certain comment I think about
that
>> you didn't have ashk
>> I don't know if it's anka you tell me
you know it's ank whatever the way it
says whether it's whether it's cedar ped
and the reb left that he wants to put in
a maramok
the letter
the reb went to the ale that day the reb
was going back home soon and
>> am for what
>> about this way the way whether it's
written sed
I'm sorry we don't even know how to look
for this I'm sorry to say
>> um
and the letter has to be printed by the
morning the reb is going home now and
this is missing the reb left two circles
empty
not having a choice I'm sorry to say I
went downstairs ing holding the long
galis hoping that Rabbi Goner is going
to come out from the Reb's room before
the Reb comes out and I'll first give
him the letter and tell him to go back
and ask the Reb to my mazle. The Reb
walks out from the room before I see the
Reb walking out. I move back. Of course,
I wasn't going to talk to the Reb. The
Reb turns around to me. He asked me,
"What's Wilto?" So I said nothing. So
says Mr. I mean Reb saw that I came here
with something holding my hands for
something. I mean obviously by that time
Rab must have realized some commotion
going on outside
he pushed himself through the Reb and I
walked over
uh I didn't talk to the Reb standing
here next to him. I told Rabbi Goner,
uh, uh, footnote was left empty.
And the Reb turns around and tells to
Rabbi Goner, I already gave it to you
this afternoon.
I mean, things were very hectic. He
didn't have a chance. There's no rush.
He didn't have a chance to give it over
to me, but I knew he needs to go to
print. I didn't know.
>> He gave to Groner.
>> He told him afternoon what to write
here. I think it was about that or
something else. Uh
>> I don't understand the whole story
because it's it's there's a muk for this
besides
>> I don't remember exactly. No, if this if
you write or
>> so what's a muck for the
>> no is different a goddess that the way
they say it has different gave
>> I think it was that I'm almost sure it
was that it could be maybe it was
already printed maybe I I could check it
out I mean it would be
>> bleful amount of time to put into that
um anyhow so
then but everything was done in pressure
now in
always the end of the cli the reb would
always add the post of the capital in if
it would be two letters it would be a
letter of
later came three letters in the letter
closer to p
>> capital
>> rabb's capital this of course was not in
part of the dictation rabbi mandel
couldn't write it and the reb would add
this and connected part of the I
remember the bohim I don't think those
years already started the new idea of a
niggan a new or old for the
capital but never decided yet which
sukim they should they should pick for
the for the niggan and those wait I
should tell them uh what pro did the
rebite like this again a day earlier to
have time what did the rebite which pro
did the rebite um and yeah but still
everything is done under major pressure
I mean I'm sorry mind you I mean I had a
job to work I got married the Maliff and
all this was done on my partially on my
free time the whole night and I wish it
would be at night but it ended up a lot
of times uh for some reasons ended up
being uh in the middle of the day when I
was already at work getting a telephone
call come back we need to do this need
to do that but this is I had a big I was
to work on those all those things
>> you did a
>> yes yes
>> do you also work on the letters that the
wrote like for dinners and things.
>> Um Raisel stopped writing um
to
I think his wife wasn't well or some
other reason.
uh one letter
Rabbi Goner prepared
um
>> yeah I think Press if I'm not mistaken
um maybe was based enough for bringing
maybe the rabbi told them inside the
room later on the vad
some goner gave it over to the vad
sometimes the reb would either bring you
saw the reb speaking a whole like could
inf you heard already he's dictating
here
>> Mhm. M
>> a statement it was very obvious you felt
it or they got paper and the rest is
>> and then so
I think at a certain point
uh couldn't do anymore the so-called
clim for the dinners all those things so
I also helped out technically for
instance you had to
um when rev writes a letter to mimis to
graduation you have to see which school
when they're graduating and their name
should be spelled properly. The regular
language of a letter usually is uh
I say you had to change it but different
because the same letter was sent to many
different organizations.
>> I was referring to longer letters that
are written for like a dinner of a
um maybe I'll get to it soon. Um so
basically a letter is based
and you look at the invitation put in
the proper date because the same letter
was going to uh different schools
different places other
seems to already happened. One of them
is
or whatever it is and I mean a lot and
now in answer to your question a lot of
those nus of the letter is already from
different years and uh used to be the
rebel
or whatever that time the reb used to
whether it was the time the reb about
the the including of three days with
chabas different things like this Um so
I helped out there too and uh but then
started with computers it was already
computers so it looked too nice and the
rabbi didn't want to ruin it to be mia
and I of course want the rabb to be mad
so I saw from rabbi I learned from him
even though I I don't write like such a
great kite like him but I would write on
top of the letter in big words had no
stationary yet and the reb would No, but
Reb still was afraid. I saw one time the
Reb was afraid to fix just like so even
signed one time without the stationary.
So I added on top big on every letter
head with two underlines and uh then
after the Reb was finishing it. We did
the correction on the computer. Now we
need to print it on a stationary. So
Rabbi Klein wanted to give me
stationaries of the Reb. I refused to
take. I didn't want to keep stationaries
of the Reb. I asked them to have only
three because if the stationary gets
stuck when you put in the machine to
print it's not regular paper. It was
paper with water watermarks the famous
fancy paper. So I only kept by me two or
three pieces and then I would give it to
to print. Now how would I know if
there's
event coming?
So I worked and I would come usually
shabas before the fabbrangan
I would see rabbi groer
and um I would hear from him what are
the different things is there uh a
dinner or some event which I didn't keep
up with uh I couldn't keep up with the
things that's going on there one time I
came shabas it was in the winter and
rabbi gono tells me that tomorrow Sunday
there's a kanuka sabai I said I don't I
think it was Shenun I don't remember
this building on Crown Street and
there has to be a letter
I didn't know what to do I said I'll try
my best this is the first time a letter
of of of lab shiva of this style ma from
other years
and I didn't promise anything
um I came out to shabas I bash managed
uh I put it on the table that stood
outside the reb's
Burka Ununic, my cousin was sitting
there that time and I put it out. I
think it was 11:30 at night. I didn't
know of anything. About 2:00 in the
morning, uh, my cousin Buna calls me
that the letter came out. I come back
7:70. I see the letter and there's a
little piece of paper upside down and
written at a big which means
or
of course I uh I turned it over. I'm
sorry to say. I take a look and uh I see
there a letter from uh from the
secretary telling the Reb
uh that and he didn't tell me that he's
preparing a note relying on me. I I told
him I don't know if I'm going to manage.
He never told me. He prepared a note to
the Reb that later when he left home
that later on uh
he told
to attach it to the letter that was the
letter
asking the Reb if he could get back the
letter in the same night
in order to be able to
should sign it. We have to print it for
the dinner. And that paper I didn't see
it when the letter came out. I see the
Reb writes
I received it midnight open the door to
take stuff from the table was after 12
at night which is holy thing what's
worked the whole night what's the
difference but it's kind of a aut that
you're giving me and the same thing was
with all the later in the time of the
mugas unlike ra always came in late and
there were many times sometimes the
rabbi clearly didn't mir as a matter of
principle
after I mean what do you mean I you need
it tomorrow morning I have to work for
you and
then says if someone
if someone must have
wow that tomorrow there's a there's no
there was this new you didn't know
before calls
question mark two exclamation marks like
like you didn't know before I mean this
this is not to me I don't mind if you
get sharp answer it doesn't matter it's
it's a but this is talking about uh
about the
>> was it was did sign that letter
>> I'm sorry to say of course he did he
have a choice
>> he did
>> I'm sorry there's a I remember one time
a letter was prepared uh also like this
he was given into the rabb was probably
in time and uh
the Reb gave it out. He signed it in the
morning by dollars. This was Gman from
Migdal. I forgot his messes are called
whatever it's called. Mdal
>> mdalair and he you know he passed by the
by dollars he had a dinner I think that
day Sunday somewhere Manhattan I don't
know rich dinner and the rabbi turns
around ask Rabbi Goner did you give him
he tells me did you get your letter guy
says no rabbit turns to Rabbi Goner says
I'll give it to him later no says now
um hey uh we tried our best to he went
out to work. Yeah. He went away for a
short time by dollars
>> and he gave them the letter. We tried
our best. Uh, everyone working very hard
including Rabbi Goner. I mean, this was
a a day and night job. It's interesting.
Uh, the telegrams of the Reb, I didn't
do them. Actually, for a bunch of years,
Simon Jacobson did them. And there again
what they did is like the good olden
times with the letters they would take a
telegram from previous year change the
date and uh telegram it says
whatever it is and the reb would add the
pig
I don't know I never figured out what
happened the last telegram of the rabbi
which is
kanuk
kanukin
on base. I don't know why Rabbi Goner
called me was the middle of the day. I
should come and prepare. I didn't want
to ask him why the guy is not doing it.
Whatever it is, I came back. I was
working that time in Williamsburg. I
came back and I prepared based on what
the Reb had spoken that time a normal
type talk type without the Reb having to
prosecute already from from from
different
and was normal telegram punked that
telegram the reb was mia added tons
of stuff actually I have to say that
that's one one thing I miss that I feel
bad till today that I don't have a copy
of it because uh Rao took it away right
away when we finished talking about
um we had no copy machines one time
I think for even was maybe
that and when we gave in the second
there was a lot of the words of the
written away that you had to figure out
only according to the tan because it was
so hard written off the the corner paper
but it was a few words that time that or
one word we couldn't figure it out with
all the effort we couldn't so by the we
gave him the galis was one page
um I suddenly get a telephone call Rabbi
Klein tells me the reb wants to see his
aor what he wrote I grabbed fast the
original I barely made an a wet copy
very unclear copy I wasn't going to hold
back and I ran and give to Rabbi Klein.
Ra Klein called me to the lady went into
the Reb and the Reb looked and looked
and looked and he says, "I myself uh
couldn't figure out what it says here."
But the Reb wrote whatever he wanted.
Like he was surprised and he wanted to
see what did I write here? Why can't
they figure out? But uh this is um
that happens sometimes that people the
writing couldn't decipher what the Reb
was writing. But we mostly figured out
in the later years after Gimmel Thomas a
lot of times things are printed
um
and the people that are I'm talking to
people that know what they're doing
can't figure out I I I had in it. I
remember times Rabbi Klein would ask me
to help him figure out for himself uh
what the Reb wrote. I don't know how
like
the chicken looks in the
this what it is.
Okay.
Thank you.
>> I'm not a rabbi. Thank you very much.
