there are publications that talk about wuhan and the potential for a virus a pandemic to arise out of wuhan in the last 20 years it's actually in the literature but we ignored it the public health response should have been incredibly more efficient it should have been much better and i'll tell you why we knew this was coming for decades in many ways as bad as this is it is a blessing because we were going to get one and we're going to get others as the world becomes more global and everybody travels and everything we are going to get them and this one was not bad they can really be bad so what this did is it showed us strategies for coming up with treatments strategies for coming up with vaccines i've never seen a focused and intense effort as is going on now in the industry the private industry is not spectacular the public is sort of bumbling around so what this has shown us is what we're doing bad from a public policy perspective but it's also shown us what we're doing well and what we will need to do from a private perspective and it will also show us what we need to do well in terms of preventative measures emergency measures etc this is going to happen again make no mistake about it and let's hope it isn't more severe than it is now
