Dovid Lowy- "Meetings" Learning From Everything- Part 1

hi david loewy here and uh i'd like to start a a series of short videos in the hope that i could start sharing some torah insight and inspiration for our lives i'd like to begin by going through a specific book that i particularly really like a lot it's a contemporary safer that i find really speaks to me it's called ali shore it was written by somebody who was relatively in our times passed away around two decades ago his name was wolby unfortunately i never had the privilege to meet him but as i said his safer really speaks to me i find it extremely insightful and i like to start with some of his insights now it's a rather big safer but there's one particular section in the safer known as vadim which means meetings like many other great spiritual leaders he would have meetings with his students and they would discuss certain character traits and have insights into them and and discuss them and have exercises about them in order to try to perfect these character traits as working on them together so let's jump right in the first idea that he discusses the first character trait that he says to work on is the character trait he calls islamdus in hebrew which is a little bit hard to translate but the concept like we'll see basically means the ability to learn from everyone and even everything and this is really based on a mishnah s who is considered a wise person and the mishnah gives us a very amazing answer with with tremendous insight it says hallo made me call adam someone who wants to learn from everyone and it's contrary to human nature because usually we would say well let's learn from the the wisest the scholars around the world they probably have what to teach us but we call them from everyone and the answer is yes if a person is truly thirsty for wisdom they will search for it from anyone and anything and the alter me kellum who was another great spiritual master he had an amazing insight into human nature and he illustrated it as follows you know some people they specialize in certain things and their whole experience is so different than somebody else i'll give you an example he says you know you have a person who specializes in sewing or making clothes so when he greets a person the first thing that he notices is you know the type of clothes he's wearing the suit they might be wearing the shirt how it's made how it's stitched to the person next to him they're totally blind to that they don't even notice it i'll tell you a personal example i know shortly after we had a baby we were looking into strollers you know for our newborn and it's something i didn't know about before and we did a little research and all of a sudden you know you walk in the street and you see your neighbors and friends and people walking around with strollers all of a sudden you start to notice what type of stroller it is where they got it from something that i was totally blind to before but now all of a sudden it's on my radar and there's a whole new world of strollers open up to me so you know that's a silly example but basically the alter becomes says that when you are open to learning wisdom and that's your focus you'll learn it from anyone and everyone because that's that's your specialty that's what that's what you're looking for and that is what the mission is telling us that a person who's truly thirsty for wisdom and wants to be wise and wants to become a special human being he'll learn it from anyone and everyone so it's my hope that we'll start learning this and we'll see revolby is going to give us some exercises to do which hopefully we'll be practicing and hopefully it'll open us up to a whole new world of learning and uh it's my hope that we could try to acquire this character trait thank you for joining me
