I grew up at the feet of the Lubavitcher
Rebbe, of blessed memory. The Rebbe was
very demanding. Somebody once came to
him and said, "I gave a million dollars
to Chabad." The Rebbe said, "You think
I'll be content with a million dollars?"
He always asked people to do more. He
demanded more. He wanted you to maximize
your potentials even more and be more
productive and achieve more. And some
people could see it as tough and harsh,
but I think it's a very superficial and
immature perspective. I'll tell you how
I see it. Imagine Mozart grew up in a
home without a piano, and he was living
a chaotic life. His genius was
expressing itself in all types of
immature and strange and frivolous ways.
And one day he comes into a maestro, and
the man sees him at the piano, and he
says,
"You're wasting your life away. You need
to sit at the piano because your music
is going to change the world forever."
Is this person harsh and tough and
demanding? Or is this person somebody
who is filled with so much love and sees
the potential of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
to transform civilization with his
beautiful music?
When you stood in front of the Rebbe,
he didn't only see a little Mozart. He
saw a little piece of the divine who is
capable of truly changing the world. He
looked at people, and he saw the
infinity shining through their face. For
him, it would have been so cruel and so
petty not to tell you and share with you
the greatness that he sees in you.
