Days of Decision: The Blood Moon, the UN, & the Judgment of the Nations on Rosh Hashanah 5786

Heat. Heat. [Music] All right. Is a brave new world. I'm just for the very first time um taking charge of my own broadcast and I want to thank Mrs. Sarah Lea for many many dedicated years of helping me and always continue to help inv many many many many moons to come. Okay. So welcome everyone. This we are we are crossing past the 16th of L. So the the outer rays of light which are red come around and shine onto the face of the moon and that's why we see it for a period of time about an hour or so as a red moon. This was visible many parts of the world and um we know that the gares speaks about the idea of as times of chuva and especially said in his house they noted of course the braos doesn't give a braha for such a incredible astronomical phenomenon. If you see a large red moon and then it disappears right and left, you might think that's unusual, which is is unusual. We won't see another one like that for at least two years. Then it it comes out a couple times a decade, but it's it's still unusual. It's not the typical. And you might think that a braha would be assigned to it. However, there is no brah for neither a lunar or solar eclipse. And if you recall several years ago, exactly 10 years ago, the world made a big deal how there were four consecutive uh eclipses on Jewish holidays. And they're going to fall out usually on the 15th of the month when when the moon is full. But this these the four of um of 17 of 5775 10 years ago happened on Sukos Pesak, then again Sukos Pesak in a in a short period of time. So in other words, every solar year, every what we would call laavd the western or uh Christian world which follows Romans really uh you know he focused on it and and championed it was a solar calendar 365 days and you divide those into 12 months because everybody knows that the moon goes around once a month you know 29 and a half days let's say so the world noted months but only in the context of the solar eclipse. Hence the Christian world does only a solar calendar and they had all the problems throughout the years. The Gregorian calendar was all messed up. They had to adjust it because they kept losing 11 days and they had to figure out a way to it. So you'd add enough days in the year that eventually that you know leap so that you could have a leap year or leap months and it would correct. >> Yeah. But that was not because of a divine imperative. The the um Jewish imperative is to balance the year so that the moadim the special times of the meeting between Hashem and the Jewish people shu should fall in their particular seasons that have been mandated by the Torah. It's an obligation that is to beesh to add to the new moon days to the month or day or a full month to the year in a leap year. And now it opened the door for Hashem's will that Islam um be the be the club with which not only the western world will be beaten but with together to be a threat to the Jewish people and that's what's happening on Russia China in the United Nations in New York City the earthwell capital of Rome there will be a declaration but a joint declaration between France, the last remaining really Catholic uh although mostly atheistic nation, the Notre Dame, the early early Christian nation in the in the very turn of the century of the of the first century and the Notre Dame which depicts the Christianity as above the blind Jewish people who refuse to accept their faith. Get a grip on what the nations of the world are saying and declaring now. Let Hashem decide. I don't wish will on any person. But those who will come out against the rats on Hashem. Hashem please. Will it be a democratic based on western Christian values which learn are informed by Jewish tradition but don't follow it or something uniquely Jewish. I'm not saying the most Jewish. Now, something very interesting actually came out in New York this week as well and that was a good a good symbol I think too. As you know, like in Israel, there has been tremendous critique and evaluation about the educational system of Torah. In America, many of the Shivos, I'm not saying right or wrong, they lost the certification from New York City and New York State to conduct schools. school. These are schools. These are schools where the kids learn basically uh liur lemur kodes and they meet the requirements of the New York state for basic education equivalent to basics education. So there was a ruling against some six schools saying, "Well, they didn't meet the criterion. They're booted out of the they're no longer considered a school. They're ICE school. And now that they're ICE school, they don't have a chance to reapply and repair what the state of New York feels are missing in the in the parallel um requirements. Between you and me. Between you and me, the Khazid have proven one thing. You don't need a college education to make money. The most successful people in real estate, in business, in marketing, in everything you can possibly think of reside within the world of theic world, especially in Burough Park and Williamsburg, in Lakewood. Whatever your position is there are solutions. Here's a pathway towards solutions that you saw happen and that is perhaps some guys will serve and perhaps the rest will be contributing to the defense of the Jewish people by securing firearms and protecting their moshim their their mosha meaning the where they live their neighborhoods such as betar and shalim and so on where they live and by providing security they have to call the army every 5 seconds or the basharvul because there'll be local people who could react to an incident and I'm sure that they reacted uh immediately and uh had there been a need to call in might have been minutes or perhaps longer until someone would emerge and who knows how many people might have lost their lives in the interim. We're all in the same boat. We all need security from this combined threat of the European and Christian world of Europe primarily but also elsewhere Russia without and without saying the nefarious elements of Islam which I don't which are the not even the Arab elements even Gaza is not Arab if you will ask the Arabs what they think about Palestinians well Egypt the real country of the of the of Arabs won't even let them in. They want no part of them. Saudi Arabia is not taking them in. Nobody's taking them in. Why? Because they do not even consider them Muslims of the pure Shia of the po pure Sunni breed. The reality is that most Arab nations, real Arab nations, Egypt and now even Syria, which is remarkable, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and so on, want peace with Israel and have come to terms with that. Yeshal will do truva but it must be separated away from the negative forces of asab the amalik mixed in which will present itself in every political attack whether it's the ICC court whether it's the demonstrations world around whether it's the violence that has emerged like a floodgates have opened around Jews across the world you don't kimat can't go through a days where somebody's not either ridiculed denied services, not allowed to have a cab, worse, beaten, threatened, not allowed to perform. It is an allout onslaught. Now, however, however, here on that bright side of the moon is the following. I saw uh that the United States Army had two officers in uniform who were screaming and yelling about the genocide of Israel and they got arrested and they got sent away and they said, "You know what? You have absolutely no right to wear a US Army uniform and and spew those lies and those hatred." That's an encouraging sign. But also to go deeper and to understand why are these people screaming? Why are they putting themselves into jail over the genocide that's happening in Gaza? It makes no sense. They don't care about genocide. They don't care about Arabs. They don't care about anybody. They didn't care what happened in Syria. They don't care what happened in Iraq. They don't care what's happening internally in Iran with the suppression. They don't care what's happening in Africa. And they don't care what's happening in in Russia. And they don't care what's happening in Ukraine. Nobody's killing themselves, chaining themselves to the walls over Ukraine. Nobody. Nobody. the sepis it's obvious that what's bothering them is something very very it's a very deep confusion everybody wants to be good everybody wants to be considered good these people are aligning themselves what the world is telling them is good of course genocide is bad so I'm going to align myself against genocide that means Israel is bad I'm align myself against Israel and it's so important to every individual to be aligned with good because they want to know that they themselves are good a human being wakes up in the morning saying am I worth it? Am I a good person? What's my justification in the world? How can I think of myself? And when they think about themselves, they don't think very much. They need outside validation to prove to them that's a weak, weakly morally developed person, which we all are in our generation. Very weak. So they look for the outside validation. Oh, this one tells me I'm good. I'm good. Must be there. The the the cell phone says that this is a good de demonstration to be part of. Yeah. The media tells me and the politicians tell me good. I want to be good. I want to be at sadic. Everybody wants to be at sadic. And they're willing to be most nephesh to show that they're good because they feel inside that it's not so push they must need. The only exceptions to this and this has been going on since the beginnings of mankind. There was one exception. Araino didn't need validation from the outside. The outside world was almighty and powerful. I mean Omar and Nimrod ruled the world. Jacob Weinberg famously said the Hammurabi the Hammurabi code. They had the law. They had the politics. They had the power. They had the army and they imposed their will as the braces describes on the on the entire on the entire uh Middle East which was the crux of civilization. And they were the crux of civilization. And there was one person flying the ointment. One small little stick thorn in the little toothpick in the mouth of the lion. He says, "I don't I don't buy it. I thought about it." The human mind has aud perspective of truth that we never lose against all odds. And if we are interested in being close to the truth and Hashem, we we develop our which means our free will and we say, "Wait a minute, let me think. Let me think on my own. Let me think logically. Let me think given the human intellect that Hashem gave me. For what purpose? So I would have free will to choose to align myself with God." That's the only reason we have a human intellect. Human intellect is inherently flawed. We can just like a machine. We can justify anything. Hitler thought he was right. Everybody thinks they're right. Uh Russia thought they're right to persecute, you know, Stalin thought he's right. Everybody thinks they're right. That's what human is. It's it's it's extremely extremely exploitable except if you go from your point of truth. There is a point of truth. There's a point of that every human being has. And any person who is morally sound will say, "I'm going to decide this based on facts and information and my own study, not based on what the whole world is saying." That's what Hashem wants. Hashem wants people who are independent thinkers think for themselves, think out of the box and choose Hashem against all odds. This is the situation today. And that's what Rashan has in stake. And I think Hashem is giving us these blatantly huge examples right in front of our face to grab our attention. How could it be that on Roshashan itself, this horrific spectacle is going to take place in the United Nations, the home base of the world. Come on. You can't, you know, even President Trump couldn't dream up such a rally. It's absurd. It's staged. It's something Hashem wants our attention. He wants to understand us. Okay. So the um the avod therefore of this rashash shana is to sit up and take notice. I did a little search about the many miracles that happened to us in this in this calendar year. Incredible. And I asked I researched and said you know throughout the year there's been stage after stage of incredibly credible victory against the enemies of Israel and Jewish people. tremendous whether it was in in the um in Huden Shamron, a campaign that began in March, the campaigns against the the the 12-day war against Iran, which was only very recent, the bombing of the nuclear facilities of Iran, the destruction of Nala, the beeper campaign, all of these things. That was a little earlier but pretty much in the calendar year 57 only continuous success and victory on the battlefield but in the battlefield of world opinion failure after failure after failure after failure hatred after hatred. It's almost like two are going in opposite directions and they and they are counterrelated. They they are reciprocals of each other because as Israel comes closer and closer to the truth those who are not living with truth will oppose it and that's what's happening on this rash shana and therefore our job is to adhere to the truth. Now how do you do that? There's only one way and there's only one method. So so speaks about it in Torah 61. Let me read you an excerpt here. How do you know? How do you know you know? All the things of Tanakh are bearing witness to the truth of our masora in the masora of Balp through Sadikim Gmorim and in later generations through the greatic masters as well and the great yeshiva this is all we have right when you open up you say okay the greatest thing that a man can do is you should start like this shouldn't that be the first very first Mishna no it's if we don't have our misor we have no handle on truth we just don't know I trust that what the Rambam wrote is true I trust what the Torah says is true it's a witnessing that bears its reality from the context of the history and the events of Israel and we are witnessing historical events of massive proportions that our forefathers only believed in that there would be something called kibolios only believed that there would be return to Israel everyone and every benching and every m and every m and we're living it and we have to lift our heads and say despite all the difficulties hashem and they are horrific difficulties terrible losses we experienced this year like null from bamesh saddic of a boy who was lost in the net brigade like people like My dear friend Howard Glazer, my dear friend Howard Glazer, and we'll speak to him. We'll dedicate this to him, was a man of steel. He built steel and he wasn't particularly raised religious, but he wanted to donate a safer Torah. And that safer to Torah was given to me when I was rabbi of Oceanside and then later when we migrated to Israel to take it here and serve here. And he just passed this past week, a week, less than a week ago. And I spoke at his funeral long distance and I just want to end by next few minutes by telling you how Hashem is giving us messages after messages to if you ask about the truth you'll get messages. So the so um as says in this Torah that it's all about we'll take a little bit of it but first let me tell you the Howard story. Boy, I grew up in Queens, not religious family, steel business. They used to build steel frames and rip them down and larger than life person, very small in stature, but larger than life. Extremely generous. Extremely extremely generous. He gave a Torah, believe it or not. He not even observant. And he he used to wear his mother's diamond ring in his ear because he was orphaned from both his parents who he dearly loved. They taught him something. They taught him to give. His parents weren't religious but they taught him to be a bal. They taught in fact he said one of the rabbis said that he said I want to give you yum kipper guilt. You don't hear that some you don't hear that unless you heard it from your parents. Don't you hear from your parents take yum kipper guilt. It doesn't matter their hearts and their souls understood the ms. Okay. So if their uh if their lack of education or other factors didn't lead them to send their kids to yeshiva and be observant, such is the case. It doesn't in any way sully the beauty of their soul, the diamond of their soul. He had a diamond soul. And he sent me he sent the Torah with me. He got me in his car and he drove me to make aliyah. Drove me to the flight to make aliyah. And the Torah came off that flight, beautiful Torah that we have. and uh still have so many hopes and dreams of how much it can help people. But one thing I will tell you this Torah after the funeral I said to myself, well maybe I should send the Torah back to America cuz after all he's gone. This is what they have left. His soul's bound into this Torah. Although this the soul of my first rabbit in Leashon who was a wonderful wonderful rabbit in his devotion side infected hundreds and hundreds of people with her everything that she did. It's also bound in that sora because she passed away in that year and it was written both in the names of her and of Solomon and Ruth Glazer Howie's parents. I said maybe it's time that it go back to the family. I live out in Long Island and there's Kabad taking care of them and I even helped arrange the Kabad should be taking care of their needs since I made aliyah their Yiddish needs, their Jewish needs. And that was very important to them. And I said to and I heard at the Leviath from the Kabad emissary that was close to him that he asked him for help to put tables in 770. 770 has a lot of bakim, you know, headquarters in Crown Heights. How he's not a kabadnik, but he's a generous man. And when the rabbi asked him, "We need tables for 770," he stopped his steel business and made his whole crew build steel tables which now adorn the sanctuary of 770. He was a man of steel. He gave support to Tori. wanted big things, beautiful things. When he made his son's bar mitzvah, his he said, "I want to show you rabbi. I did something for my son to make him happy. I want to make my kid happy." How did he make him happy? He got him an elephant to ride into the room on his bar mitzvah. First bar mitzvah, he entered Barnum and Bailey Circus into the some some glad kosher party hall out in Long Island on the hell on an elephant. Okay, that's how we that's who Howard Glazer Yanbar and there were two great mitzvah he always did with me. One was tora the family was always invited to our suda the last suda in America that you sit in the suka eve of sras tora and it was one of those simas that he announced he wants me to help him write a Torah for his parents. We came to Erit Israel. We started the Torah in Benbra. We finished at Young Israel of Oceanside, Long Island. And I said, "I had a tragedy that year and we all wrapped it up into one Torah and it was at Young Israel of Oceanside with me when I was the RV there. When I left and eventually made aliyah, he said, "Rabbi, you go with the the Torah. I gave it to you. Go take it. Go do good. Go do Jewish." you know and the other and he would always come to the celebrations of Oceanside where I made a point to invite all the Jews not the Orthodox Jews not the conservative Jews I refuse labels I said every Jew in this community and I reached out to every type of Jew and their leadership and I said you know I did it with from Feinstein it was done properly everybody came and it was a massive celebration of Torah outside with the whole community. Something I had done in Manhattan and it carried over into into Long Island where I was the road. And that was that to very big. And when the World Trade Center was attacked, he he and his steel crew were the first people down there ripping down the buildings. And he had pictures he showed me of the carnage. Maybe this was curtailed his life because he was there at that dangerous time. But there was one more mitzvah that we did together which was pur I would always create do and still do a matanis love yonim campaign together with toadas yeshiva from which I got smika and would bring all the money to rapam and later the subsequent shivas my illustrious rebi and they would give out the money we had no idea where the money went I still don't know where the money goes every year every single year tens of thousands of dollars and the person would come and count up the dollar bills and the $5 bills and the checks and the singles the count up to the grand total like a teleathon was Howard Glazer and his wife Lauren. She should be blessed the bubble of they were not part of my synagogue but they were part of my soul and they were part of her palm soul. And he she she he asked one perm for a child for third child. And that daughter today is 23 years old. And she donated a kidney to her father, one week before he passed away. And it was mentioned at the Levia and the family asked me said, "Rabbi, how could it be? We she donated a kidney one week. Is this Hashem's will and he passed away a week later? How do you explain that?" So I said, uh, well, we could say it's Hashem's will. It's for the best, but the Kabad Rabbi had a good, he said, Howie taught his family to be ultimate givers. He made sure before he left that they were transformed from regular people to ultimate givers. Give away a kidney, you give away your life. And they followed in his footsteps. They're following in his footsteps. So I felt guilty. And I said, "Give them back their Torah. This is what they have in Yiddish. What do I need it for? I have plenty of I can give a shir. What do I need a Torah for?" But this is what happened. The Shabas, this past Shabas, which was the end of his Shiva in Shu. I was on my way to Shu. I was actually in the mikvah, but that's another part. And I was I was approached by my neighbor, and he says, "Rabbi Schwarz, we need to make a emergency minion this morning." But what's going on? there's a boy that needs an offer. a boy who might be a little bit utter no exchange from I don't know whatever the circumstances is there was no offer for range from him and his father said to him you have to have an aliyah he says can we make a minion in your house with your Torah and in came streaming all these people and I had bought a brand I had bought a brand new talis with a mantto that my wife I mean the Torah that my wife had given me 25 years ago when we first got married and it was the first time I'm wearing it on a I had refurbished and cleaned in America it was brought back by my son I'm putting a talis on. The first thing that I did was say a braha and I said a cottage for Howard Glazer in that talis. This was this past chavis morning. And it was that talis that a few like an hour or two later would be worn by the who didn't have enough and my wife pulled together this beautiful kdish and we danced and we sang. I said it reminded me of another thing. I said, "This shows me, at least for me, that this Torah has what to accomplish here, and it's important because if it weren't here, there wouldn't be an offer for this special young man." And that proved it to me. Don't think it has to make. And that's what Howard would want. Celebrations and celebrations. And we always do an outdoor sasra at our home, which you're all invited to out in the street. There was one year I couldn't do it because I was in a two years ago for my my dear father Schwarz who's buried here who was a and a beloved person a prince among the rabinet and of the Jewish communities very very beloved man my my mother still alive in New York God bless her so the I got from her palm was you can't do hakas outdoor this year you can't do a kafas at all you're a how can you lead hakus for anybody else so we we skipped it we usually do it on on night and we went in the morning we went to shul and that year two years ago was October 7th wake up in the morning had gone to Nates and the sirens are blaring and when I finished diving and finished come out of ducking in the mikvah because of the bomb shelter that was my bomb shelter tokes mikvah because we ded in the back of Ishkesh and the alarms went off at Adon alum at the very last uh very last kadesh and I came home and my wife said to me and my daughter-in-law said but our kids have been looking forward to Torah all I mean for the longest time they have their flags and their toas and they're so excited and they have to have colonum and the candies and the aliyah and you must have it we're going to go to shul my wife said absolutely are you no way going to sh there's sirens every five minutes a came out my son Akiva was was also helped he said so we'll make it here so we'll make some here we gather all the children on the block including our own and maybe some teenagers who don't usually go to and we even had a minion I gave Torah to a young man who let's put it this way needed and he became tora. I was on the sidelines because I was in a famous I was just orchestrating. It was one of the most joyous simps. They're being heaved upon us by the by the murderers and rapists of Gaza. On that day, the Torah would not be denied its Torah. I said this safer Torah wanted it. Simka's Torah under any circumstances. It was meant to have it. It has a role to play. We all have a role to play to be mame each other's Torah. That is the message Torah should be turned in this year from a toka two years later. And we should we should see this is Hashem the great the great victory of Kal Israel. What's the victory? Peace among ourselves, peace with the Torah, and then of course that the world will we will be blessed with the ultimate blessing of shalom. That's what we want. Just want to end with a with one word from he says, "So why you going to do that? How are you going to do all this? How are you going to maintain your sanity in a world which yells at you that you're a person committing the worst and most heinenous crimes? You are genocidal. All Jews are genocidal maniacs destroying babies as the world yells and yells and yells and they'll yell in the UN and they'll yell in the international criminal court and they yell in every body politic you can imagine and that people are yelling at our government from inside the government of Israel and from in the state of Israel non-stop who can stand under such a cacophony and all the attacks between religious and not religious and everything else Tel Aviv is allowing doing on rash. I was very proud Tel Aviv is allowing to happen is Russia not like two years ago when they didn't allow Yamipa gatherings there's rays of light this attack this morning showed the importance of the Kedi community at least to protect their own communities that's their role that's the defense of Israel that they can do instead of being lost to Torah that they very much want to observe in circumstances that are not holy for their observance of Torah.
