today is day number 83 of our daily
study of rambam seifry mitsu's and this
corresponds to in the three chapters a
day of
MRSA chapters 3 4 and 5. okay
now yesterday we explained what ibum is
and that was our myth for yesterday ibom
is when a man dies childless his brother
has a Mitzvah to marry
the Widow and have children with her
okay what if he doesn't want to do it
then there is a mechanism and this is
the only way out of it this has to be
performed it is a ceremony but it's not
just a ceremony it actually is the legal
mechanism through which
the parties are released from the
obligation it's a Mitzvah to do even so
how are they released from this so that
they can both go their own way and
that live their lives so this is today's
Mitzvah positive commandment 217.
positive commandment 217 is the Mitzvah
of kalitza now khalitza literally means
taking off the shoe why because part of
the ceremony
is
that
the woman removes a certain shoe a type
of a shoe and it's a very specific type
of shoe from
the brother-in-law's foot and there are
other aspects of this ceremony
um which are very very specific and must
be performed
in an exact way which we won't go we
won't get into
but the point is this is the way that
they are released from the obligation
it should be mentioned it's important to
mention
that
ibom is hardly if ever performed today
it is considered the first choice to go
straight to khalitza
um even in talmudic times there was a
discussion about
depending on the motives of the
brother-in-law whether ibom should be
performed
and certainly in the past Thousand Years
where polygamy has been prohibited at
least in ashkenaza communities it's been
uh
that has caused yibum to be an issue
like let's say the brother who becomes
obligated to do yibum is already married
so it's not really possible for him to
marry to do the mitzvahim and to marry
his
widowed sister-in-law
so for for those reasons and other
reasons
today we just go straight to khalitza
when it happens and it's very rare that
all of the conditions for yubam are met
so it's a it's a rare occurrence to to
happen today but we do khalitza instead
of evil today
okay and that is today's Mitzvah we will
see you tomorrow God willing
