Day #248–Rambam DAILY Sefer HaMitzvos

it is day number 248 of our daily study of RA and in the three chapters of M we're continuing Ina that's the loss of theft chapters 4 five and six and we covered the prohibition against theft itself as well as the mitzvah for how to deal with the thief we have today some Mitzvah that are related to theft positive commandment 208 is the obligation to use just or righteous weights and measures that means that when you do business and something is weighed or measured or let's say surveying land whatever it is um it has to be done accurately it shouldn't be done in a way that will cheat or Swindle anybody okay so that's one mitzvah for today negative commandment 271 is the prohibition against using inaccurate unjust weights or measures or whatever it might might be that would cause a dishonest uh business transaction to take place um and and and not even if it's done maliciously just doing it uh sort of haphazardly you know making a guesstimate that's that's part of this prohibition if you say I'm selling you uh a pound of uh ground beef then it really has to be weighed a pound of ground beef okay and then negative commitment 272 this is a very interesting prohibition and this is the probation against maintaining unjust weights and measures what does that mean it means even having it in your house you just have it it's just for fun it's a museum piece we don't use it it is prohibited to have inaccurate unjust weights and measures even if you don't intend un using it just having it is a Prohibition and this is not merely um you know we have often rinic enactments that make off fence around the Torah well where the rabbis will make um an extra decree to to to keep us away from a Prohibition this is not what this is this is actually a specific biblical prohibition this is one of the 63 Commandments it's one of the 365 prohibitions um you know how that breaks down right 613 Commandments breaks down into 248 positives and 365 negatives so one of the 365 negatives is even possessing these inaccurate weights and measures even if you don't use it okay so those are our misses for today we will see you for more tomorrow God willing
