My voice I hear you go. Look at the
excitement of my 16-month old daughter
for the good morning of voice I it's a
pearl in the daughter of the base.
I let them enjoy that.
Oh, was that good? We'll do it again.
Why not?

First of all, I want to thank
Rebbi
First of all, I want to thank Rebbi for
bringing me back to learning probably
for the first time ever.
I've been learning the daf with you for
nearly a year now joining sukkas and
dalid. Please see attached photo of us
together when you visit Los Angeles.
[Music]
I finally got the gumption to send this
email. It's a new word for the pun of
gumption to send this email that has
been sitting a draft for draft for 2
weeks on my phone now without Instagram.
Meaning because of this year, I'm
assuming. I was finally convinced to
send the email after Rebbi's
introduction with the shiur regarding
the mission people on the message that
when we have ideas, we should share them
because maybe we can make a difference.
Here is my idea. After noticing the
positive effects of making a concerted
effort to not speak during kaddish and
answering with kavana, I think it would
be nice to start another initiative
during the midst of kedushah.
Kedushah, and that is that we should
make a concerted effort to have proper
decorum during the chuppah ceremony when
we attend a wedding.
I often find that people, myself
included, if I'm not making the effort
of talking or on the phone or not paying
attention during the speech time.
Reb boysai, I Okay, so here it goes.
First of all, this is not I have to say
this is not on my top 20 list, but I
used to be a caterer
and it is a pet peeve.
And I found and not to I don't want to
make
uh different
It happens to be that by the more modern
crowd
no cannot nobody speaks during the
chuppah.
And I came to the conclusion it's not
that the firm oilam doesn't care that
much. It's just like for instance, this
week in our shul alone, we have the
seltzer wedding, the groom's wedding,
and the ashken wedding. We just keep on
going to weddings. It's like and and
became we became desensitized, maybe.
And not realizing that it's this
couple's most special day their life and
maybe the chuppah is the most special
time of that special day. And here we
are.
I was at a chuppah in my place when I
was a caterer and I was up there and all
of a sudden in the middle of the
chuppah, somebody's phone rang.
And he's a nursing home owner and he
couldn't care less about anything. He
goes, "Hello."
And the whole place and he has a
conversation
like, "What are you doing?"
And then I
some some shaita had the chutzpah to
make his wedding on Super Bowl Sunday.
During the chuppah, everybody's like,
"Yeah."
It's like, "Okay, it's a chuppah."
NO, THEY WEREN'T. THEY "TOUCHDOWN."
NO, THAT'S
BUT OKAY.
I'M NOT a rav. I'm not aware of the
halachas, but I think we can do a better
job of focusing attention and improving
the decorum in those moments. What do
you think? Sincerely, your talmid simcha
man.
Again, you know, when I'm not going to
make a big deal out of it because
there's many things before that, but it
is
interesting hora from meseches
kiddushin.
First of all, I want to thank Rebbi for
the wonderful daily daf. I would like to
offer as I'm a
typography. How do you spell pronounce
it? He does typing.
Typography huh?
Whatever. Not type Forget. Okay. I
designed the layout for one of the
biggest Jewish newspapers and I'm
willing to help enhance MDY shiurim. So
I made a new template for the pesukim to
remember the shiurim in a readable
professional layout. Please see
attached.
New proud daily participants that don't
like the current version of the pesukim
layout. The font is not readable. The
timing adds the unclearness, the color
strike, and there's no breathing space.
I'm not here to critique. I just want to
help.
[Laughter]
What are you doing?
Please let me know. No, no, he's not. I
No, no, no, seriously, I take I take
these horas and I like them. If I'm
going to show the oilam what he did and
I think that he did something very
special there. Let me know if you're
interested in it. I would like to stay
anonymous.
The typography Whatever layout
Here we go. Here's his new layout.
It's You see the space? It's clear.
There's no colors, no blues and greens.
On the bottom, there's MDY. It says this
daf. Do you like it?
So we should go with this?
Okay.
Ben Zakai Zakan says ikuva means
requirement. Well, here's a better one,
I think. Shopsy Kohn says
mandatory. And I think that was the word
that I meant ikuva. It's a mandatory
It's mandatory. No? You don't like
either of them.
Always, sometimes people come here, they
sit next to me over here and you don't
know exactly what you're getting. After
shiur, this individual told me a
unbelievable thing. You said yesterday.
It turns out that Itzik Ben Shabbat flew
in from London just to come to this
year. He came at night, came to the
shiur and immediately after shiur went
back to the airport. I thought it was
important to to point that out. Can't
believe I'm the only guest that MDY had
corner Sunday. I believe there are other
guests, but I didn't like
say hello to them, unfortunately. That's
the first. Being at MDY headquarters
truly was amazing experience traveling
overnight from Delta Air. Yes, there's
no such amazing experience close to
compare cuz the Torah
must have been so excited probably
adrenaline.
I also come back in the near future.
Attached is a picture of myself.
The kitzer
Eli does overtake most people when it
comes to height, especially with me.
MDY member since kindness wishing you
all MDY Israel
sukkah Itzik Ben Shabbat.
Ben Shabbat, sorry.
Hi Rebbi. I saw the Here's another
person that we didn't have who he was.
Saw the attached video of Shimon Ber
Stern coming to the shiur last week.
This individual is tremendous undercover
about chesed. He inspires a lot of
people and friends to learn Torah.
He called me the and another 20 He calls
him and another 20 people every morning
for the last 6 years
to wake me up and come learn to have the
zechiah to have him listen to your
shiur.
I know he tries to bring a lot of people
to join your shiur. He doesn't even know
that I learn with you, but I can say I'm
the only yid in his zechus.
He didn't give up on me for years and
even though I didn't answer his calls
for many years and finally opened the
Gemara, my life is changing thanks for
being such a good magid shiur. Anonymous
from London. Here he Here's the young
man that came here the other day. We
didn't know who he was. Undercover
tzaddik.
Very good. If you sit over here, the
rules are you got to be careful not to
lean into the camera, otherwise that guy
is going to start screaming in the
middle of the shiur.
Maybe it's before shiur. Thanks for
being here. Where are you from?
London. Very nice. And what's what's
your name?
Okay, so that that tzaddik.
The kollel, what's going on with the
sponsors?
The daily sponsors
No, no, I I thought maybe you forgot
them. Kollel sponsor of the month, may
we merit the crown of sham. Kollel of
the day, Joshua Whistler l'ilui nishmat
Myron Ben Yishai Zelig.
The meseches sponsored by Lock and Load
Moving Families Lakewood, New Jersey
because Torah and achdus are the best
segulah.
The parnasah chodesh l'ilui nishmat
Chaim ben Soisa. Parnasah chodesh l'ilui
nishmat Avraham Albert Halevi ben Essing
Gavriel ben Yaminov and parnasah chodesh
in honor of Eli's Simcha Shatz and all
the MDYers and parnasah chodesh l'ilui
nishmat Zecharya ben Moshe parnasah of
the art. Yosef ben Yosef ben Chaim Sarof
for the zechus in the coming from
supporting limud Torah. Reb boysai, we
are on yud dalid amud beis
towards the bottom.
And just to do a
uh
recap
of what we learned yesterday. So we
started the sugiyah of eved ivri,
a Jewish slave.
And there's two types of eved ivris. One
is a one that sells himself because
let's say he doesn't have the money and
needs the money.
The other one is a eved ivri that's sold
by besdin.
What's going on here? What picture is
this, Gary?
It's a na'ah ma'aseh.
Okay.
An eved that the besdin sells him
because he stole.
And he didn't have money to pay back, so
they sell him.
And each one needs its own pesukim, its
own limudim. They're very different.
So the Gemara says,
"How do you know that a eved that sold
himself, you could buy him with money?"
So the Gemara says, "We learned this
gezeirah shavah
of sachir sachir."
It says by a eved that a besdin sold, it
says sachir. It says also sachir by when
he sells himself.
Just like when besdin sell him, they
sell him for money.
So too, when he sells himself, they sell
him for money.
Reb boysai, today's sugiyah
is about that there was a mention
yesterday there is a man de omer that
doesn't hold of this sachir sachir.
That's today's sugiyah. Who is this man
de omer?
And we try really hard. We go through
this and we go through that and we're
not going to end up with a good one.
We can't find him.
The Gemara says, "According to the man
de omer that doesn't learn this, so how
do you know that if you sell yourself,
you could sell yourself for money?" So
the chiyuv saseg, it's a special limud.
But who is this man the omer?
[Music]
So, then the Gemara says, "Well, maybe
we're middle of this part. Maybe it's
this man the omer machlokes Tanna Kamma
and Rebbe Elazar."
There's a big difference, says the Tanna
Kamma, between mocher atzmo and machur
Beis Din. A list of four things.
A mocher atzmo could sell himself for
more than 60 years. He sells himself. He
makes a deal with the master, "I want to
be sold for 7 years. I want to be sold
for 20 years."
Machur Beis Din, they're limited to only
6 years.
Mocher atzmo
cannot do retzi'ah. He can't say, "Oh,
poke my ear and I want to stay now all
the way to to yovel." It only works by
machur Beis Din.
Mocher atzmo, you don't give him gifts
when he leaves. You're not mechuyav to
give him gifts.
If Beis Din sells him, you're mechuyav
to give him gifts. How much? We're going
to have a whole sugia. 15, 30, 50. You
have to give him a nice tip.
Mocher atzmo, he sells himself, he's not
allowed to marry the shifcha kena'anis,
the non-Jewish slave. Machur Beis Din
could.
So, the Gemara wanted to say that
this difference
Rebbe Elazar says, "No, it's all the
same. It's one halacha. Mocher atzmo and
machur Beis Din all have the same. They
You could
You could get a shifcha. You have to do
a hana'ah, etc. It's all the same." So,
the Gemara wanted to say, "Maybe it's a
question do you learn socher socher?
You're learning one from the other. So,
there's no difference. Once you learn
socher socher, then there's no
difference between mocher atzmo and
machur Beis Din."
And the Tanna Kamma says, "We don't
learn socher socher." So, here's a man
the omer that says, "We don't learn
socher socher."
That's where we held yesterday.
And we touched upon where the arrow is.
Where it says, "No, everybody holds you
do learn socher socher." And that's
going to be the thing today. Oh, you see
he doesn't learn socher socher? No, he
does learn socher socher.
So, why did Why does he say there's a
difference between mocher atzmo and
machur Beis Din? If you learn socher
socher, it's zeh k'zeh shavah. It means
that they're both equal. The one that
sells himself The one that sells himself
They're equal. No, there's a special
pasuk that says that this doesn't
happen.
So, we had yesterday a special pasuk
that says you could sell a mocher atzmo
for more than 6 years. And now we're
moving on to the next thing on the list.
[Music]
If he holds of socher socher, the Tanna
Kamma, so why does he make a distinction
when it comes to retzi'ah?
Okay.
And why does he make a distinction with
an eken and shifcha?
Oh, says the Gemara like this.
My time in the Tanna Kamma
four lines from the bottom of the Yud
Daled Amud Beis.
That's the whole sugia. My time in the
Tanna Kamma the omer mocher atzmo ein
enirtza. Why does the Tanna Kamma say
that if he sells himself, there is no
retzi'ah, you can't make a hole in his
ear? Midei me rachmana gam bei machur
Beis Din verotza ad deino v'ozno
bemartze'a ozno shel lo velo ozno shel
mocher atzmo.
So, first of all, there's an addition to
this animation. Here we go, my boys. Pay
a lot of attention. It's kishmach.
[Music]
The volume. You need volume here.
Ready? Here it goes.
[Music]
[Laughter]
That's a
Finally made it. FINALLY MADE IT.
[Applause]
WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU? YOU WERE SLEEPING
ALREADY?
IT WAS TOO LATE. SLEEPING.
OKAY.
SO, if you need to make noise, please
come in. Avi. Just talking to Rebbe Avi.
Today actually was quiet.
[Music]
Verotza ad deino v'ozno. So, I I just
want to show you something that that's
pointed out Rashi says here. Then you
can turn off the volume. Shkoyach.
Sleeping today. Verotza ad deino v'ozno.
And Rashi says it says again venasachta
bo'ozno badeles. This two oznoys We
learn it from the yether says Rashi.
There's a chiyuv also here. Okay. Oznoi,
only he gets retzi'ah, this mocher Beis
Din, but not if he sold himself. Top of
the It's above them now.
Now
um Yossi is trying something new here
for this sugia.
What happens in these sugias? They're
It's very very simple.
I learn from oznoi. And what do you So,
now what do you How do you learn it? You
learn from here. Ve'idach ve'idach, it
keeps on going back forth forth back and
people lose they they They lose
concentration. So, he made a little bit
of a chart. If you want to follow the
chart, great. Not Not, it's very very
simple. Ve'idach
a heyl l'gezeirah shavah d'osa. It's not
extra. The word oznoi is not extra. Now
you get Look, it comes in here. I should
come in. Ah.
What does he do with the word oznoi on
the bottom left corner? He's going to
learn that you have to do the retzi'ah
on the right ear. So, the word oznoi is
not extra from the side of Rebbe Elazar.
I remember not only retzi'ah she bo'ozen
yeminis. Ne'emar kan ozen v'ne'emar
halon ozen. By the metzora. So, metzora
is very interesting.
Metzora is somebody that has an
affliction on the skin and he goes
through a whole very very long process.
Probably the longest process in the
Torah.
He goes to the kohen, shows to the
kohen, the kohen muchlat, not muchlat.
Bekitzur,
at the end of the process when he's a
real metzora, he comes to the Beis
Hamikdash with three korbanos. An asham,
chatas, and olah.
And that also has a whole process. And
then basically he stands by the by the
by the door over there. What's it
called? The um
Sha'ar Nikanor. Thank you. And they take
some of the blood of the of the korban
and they put it on his right ear and on
his right thumb and his right big toe.
So, it says over there ozen. And we know
by metzora it's
the right. Mal halon yamin afkan yamin.
Now, just to to
check this out for a second. This is
also important. Because what happens is
Meches to make such a connection between
a metzora to eved. And the answer is cuz
there's an extra pasuk over there. More
than one pasuk.
There's a whole
a bunch of psukim that are completely
extra. Why? Because the Torah says
what to do. Velakam
hayumanas. And then all of a sudden
pasuk chof alef
it says ve'im dal hu. And what if this
metzora is very poor?
Then you switch up the korbanos. You
give He only has to bring instead of
paying for three expensive korbanos, he
pays one expensive one and two cheap
ones. He gets two birds for the chatas
and olah instead.
That should have been the end of the
parsha. Instead, the Torah keeps on
going and explaining, "And take the
blood and put it on his ear." You
already said it.
You said it about a guy that has money.
So, why are you repeating the whole
thing again by So, they're all extra.
And since they're all extra, we learn
from this that a eved also his ear when
you do retzi'ah it should be the right
ear.
Mal halon yamin afkan yamin. Ve'idach
Oh, ve'idach. Now we go back to the
chart over here.
How does he know that it has to be on
the right ear?
Im kein mikra ozen mi'oznoi. So, you see
the Tanna Kamma uses the extra vav. You
put it in a parentheses. That That's how
he learns the right.
Ve'idach
Ah.
Now check out this chart. Ooh, it goes
upwards. So, now what is the What does
Rebbe Elazar learn with the vav? He has
this extra vav. What does he do with it?
Oznoi velo ozna.
You cannot do retzi'ah to a woman.
Ve'idach. Okay, so then how does the
Tanna Kamma now know that halacha?
The green halacha of oznoi velo ozna.
He learns from the pasuk. Nafke leimei
mi'im yomar eved. We're talking The
whole parsha is talking about a a male.
Eved velo amah.
Ah, if so,
what's the Tanna Beis or Rebbe Elazar
going to do with him yomar eved?
He learns He learns mi'bayila achi yomar
ishu eved. That you need to say to your
master, "I want to remain for more
years" while you're an eved. You can't
go out after 6 years and come back a
week later, "Hey, could I have my job
back?" It's too late.
Ve'idach. But, he already learned The
Tanna Kamma already learns mi'yomar eved
that has to be the ear of the eved and
not that of an amah.
So, what does he do? How does he learn
mi'yomar eved?
Huh? It's coming in. It's coming in. Ho
eved. The extra hey.
V'eved ho eved nafke ve'idach.
Eved
lo doresh. That's Oh, he always finishes
off like that. It's not that much of a
It's not too much of an extra word. Ho
eved.
It's normal to write like that. So, it's
not You don't make a drash from it.
[Music]
Okay.
So, that's the end of that sugia.
Now
we're going So, we just So, now from all
Just as the chazarah real quickly.
Everybody learns You like that? It
Tell Yossi to continue that. Okay, cuz
he wasn't sure. So, he didn't really do
it for the next sugia.
Too much color or go back to black and
we'll space out the words a little bit.
You're being serious?
Ah, I love kids coloring books.
Kishmach.
Okay. So, now we're going back now to
the next halacha. Again if you learn
socher socher
We have We have MDY coloring books. We
give out the at the siyum.
If you have the the the
to suck your suck your so they should be
exactly the same one who sells himself
and one who sold by business should have
the same
why is it when it comes to Hanukkah
giving gifts they're different it's
different because he has a special
positive
a man you can you don't give him any
parting gifts
because it's that's how I look about by
one that's sold by a business Hanukkah
Hanukkah lie
lie the lie
at smile
the
office tomorrow where it says
lie
and not I take the word lie only in this
case doesn't tell him does he get gifts
not if he sells himself so what is the
other man going to do with the lie lie
you don't give the gifts to the
inheritors says the more it doesn't make
any sense
why aren't the his children entitled to
his gifts so
he's considered a worker master let's
see he he dies right before he dies
right before he got a salary
you have to pay the money the salary
the auction should get the gifts you're
right
you have to
pay him for working
more says not like you it says you work
you deserve these gifts you have no way
out of it it's not a tip you must give
it and there's a certain amount you give
a lie
this is interesting let's say the slave
owes money to another individual so that
other individual cannot come and say hey
give me the gifts
I'm I'm here in line the guy owes me
money I know he's never going to pay me
give me the gifts no the gifts go to the
slave and only the slave
don't
worry I'm not going to do the
thing
oh here's I just try to do
Yoshi's thing I took his slide and try
to do it so this is Hanukkah
it's a lot okay
what is it with the lie lie oh yeah it
says it's not fine this is what we call
she put the
Muslim by Muslim
so in this case
the Malvern lent money to the lever the
the guy
the cigar lent money to the guy in the
bottom to the lever and the lever lent
money to the
so instead of the lever paying back the
Malvern the
goes and pays the Malvern directly
it's just a circle
okay so
the Malvern could go directly to the and
demand money
that you could do that but in this case
if the is a let's say
the Malvern cannot go to say hey give me
the gifts or the opposite the the lever
is the the receiver is is
uh
the okay fine whatever you get the idea
the point is the gifts go directly to
the slave and not to the one that the
slave owes money to
you don't have
over here
you have you write me a text now that I
have to put
I forgot
what
no no
no no no no no there are special I agree
to you there are special about it's a
gift it's not it's not a attachment
they made up 600 and 600 but at the end
there's always a gift and it's a certain
amount of a gift and it goes directly to
the and it's a special of a gift
but because it goes because of his
work that he did and he finished those
years it goes also to the auction
fine
that's what he does with the lie
it's not a problem because he never
holds on to
so he wants to say
so you see over here that we don't hold
do we not hold
do we hold
in general there's a whole here all the
way at the end he says maybe everybody
agrees that you do hold of
when it comes to
just when it comes to
okay fine
now we're going back we're going to the
final of
that there's a difference between
does not get a
not
now just
unbelievable thing
and that I I didn't realize that my pet
peeve here in my is a lot of people's
pet peeve so I'll mention again
in the grocery stores there's two giant
grocery stores here in the Americas in
the center of town and they have a lot
of these wagons and it always drives me
crazy that people take these wagons home
and don't return them they leave them in
front of their house first of all they
make a big mess in the neighborhood
there's wagons everywhere so
these wagons cost hundreds of dollars
they bring it and then kids break them
then the people that go to the grocery
stores don't have wagons they're sitting
there waiting for the wagons I don't
know
it's
then the grocery stores have to send out
a truck every so often and they pick up
these wagons
and then I realized but what products do
these people have in the wagons only but
that's we only but that's in the wagon
you know but they steal but that's what
the kids
it always drives and then I heard from
many people that always drives me crazy
this thing
so it says here an unbelievable thing so
what kind of business is this
letting a Jewish man marry a
what is this I can't say says
that this guy
if you told him two weeks ago he said
you know your neighbor
she she's having a relationship with a
non-Jew the non-Jewish worker you go
with sugar you make a big
you did a big sign and this and that you
burn a few garbage cans in front of your
house whatever you had to do
and then
you go and you steal
so telling you you know what you got to
you're just as bad as that person that
that had that relationship you you're
managing the same in the same category
you could have a you could have a
relationship with the it's okay if
you're stealing you could have a it's
the same thing that's what the says
so it's a remnant yeah
not leave it at your house he might let
you take it home and bring it back that
I heard from people
what
I'm going to ask you to bring it back
right away but to leave it there and let
the kids play with it and then some
people already play with it now we're
going to now I can use it and leave it
in my my house to take the groceries out
from the this and then the contractors
are using it and schlepping stuff and
these things cost maybe a thousand
dollars they're a lot of money
and his neighbor made a barbecue we're
going to do it differently
just don't put the the the the empty
white magnet on one of them you know
that that as long as you don't use it to
steal your steaks
the worst was the guy that came to me
to my
on
and he's pushing out the cakes and the
right out of the bringing home that's a
pet peeve of a pet peeve it's a double
pet peeve fine
says the
where are we
oh I've no idea where we are
why is it if he sells himself so this
the makes a lot of sense because he sold
himself he's not a
he just needs money he doesn't deserve
it's a special but when sells you for
stealing in my doing of
lie the lie
doesn't apply to selling yourself either
laser lie about
this amazing
if you have
Jewish slave and you have a non-Jewish
slave woman you force them to get
married even though the guy doesn't want
that what says look it says in the so
you have to give him gifts why
because he worked double
you
worked double for you
so
every he works day and night 24 hours a
day so
what human being could work 24/7 the
the says better it says that it's he's
it's good when he's with you it's very
good for him
you have to give him the same food that
you eat the same drinks that you drink
you have to give him
at least as good as you
even more than you have or
says that
that what that he's working for you at
night doesn't mean literally working
he's working for you at night that you
give him
and how is he working for you because
he's producing
a little
that's the whole point why is the why is
the master want this cuz he wants to he
wants more slaves that's his work
I have something to say I'll say it a
different time
I think that you can't force him come
out
okay the bottom line is we don't have
anybody
cuz when you said that they you see over
here he doesn't
he just has specially moved him every
time so who is the time that learned
that doesn't learn
the so
here just to see it again if you want to
see what it looks like this very it's a
and
I said in the yesterday by mistake I
said
even though it was on the screen
and
okay so that was a mistake too late now
but the
is between and
you have a a connection so who's the one
that doesn't hold of this very
this
talking about a every every that goes
out to his family by Yovel.
What are we talking about?
If it's talking about a If it's talking
about a we already said it in the
possuk. If it's
if it's the one that that one that had
the whole process,
we know. By the way, think about it. A
guy that's
has no way out. He has to wait until his
master dies
or wait until the Yovel. Could be 50
years. He cannot do
He can't pro rate his There's nothing to
do for him to do.
What about the two years before the
Yovel? It's talking about the two years
before the Yovel. When two, three years,
four years before the Yovel.
That whatever comes first, Yovel came
before the 60 years, then he goes out.
You see this man doesn't hold of because
what's the difference between
It's all the same. It's within
What you learn one from the other. Why
do you need a special possuk for this?
No. Again, we don't have somebody that
doesn't hold of Why? Because you could
say
he does hold of
So why do you need a special possuk?
This guy, he did a big What's his
biggest error?
Yeah. No.
The guy.
Um
Sorry.
Omar Mar
He didn't say I think let him let him
stay.
So we need a special possuk that he goes
out by Yovel. Omar Mar Even
my
Where does it say in the possuk that a
goes out by Yovel? It doesn't say in the
first possuk what we're talking about.
What kind of is it? So we have to say
this possuk.
We're going to talk about this possuk
later on. Why do you need this
What kind of slave are we talking about?
We already talked spoke about it.
Must be there's only the third type.
My mashma
So hold on. Let's go back here for a
second.
Oh.
So if you look at this for a second
That's one possuk we just brought. The
says this is talking about a
that a that a goes back to to his family
in Yovel.
And then it says another possuk.
It's talking about a
So the has a very simple question. We
have these two possukim.
Who told you that the top one is the
bottom one is
Maybe it's the opposite. Maybe the top
one is the bottom one is Like where did
you get this from? My mashma If
you look, it's underlined in in red.
It's red. Ish. What's
something that's special to a man and
not a woman? Have you ever seen a
As we established before, you don't do
to a woman. So
the top possuk is talking about a not a
a
And I need both of these possukim.
He didn't work six years.
So maybe she could continue working at
least six years. He can't go out now
Yovel after a year and a half work.
So this is that possuk over there.
So we should give him a Why? Because it
says in the possuk again, this is very
important I
are my slaves. So what do you Why are
you making yourself a slave to a human
being? That's a problem. So maybe I
should give you a for doing that.
I'm I'm skipping all the the little
and the stories for We got to do the
side.
But a already worked six years. So maybe
she should go out by Yovel. What about
them? The
that didn't work at least six years. Am
I right?
The
at least six years. Am I right?
I need the two that he should go back
and he should
means actually means forever, but means
over here till Yovel.
It should be forever. So that's why
he goes back to his family in Yovel.
Yovel came and he didn't work six. I
would have six years.
If he worked six years before
So the second time around
Look, a guy that that's a a He worked
six years. Then he gets his ear poked on
the front door of MDY. So maybe he
should work another six years.
Why should the second time around be
worse than the first time? The first
time he only has to work for six years.
So the second time also six years. Maybe
he should go he should he should work in
the second time for 40 years until
Yovel. That's not fair.
I would think I would have
The second time around shouldn't have
more years than the first time.
You go until Yovel.
So
we still don't have somebody that
doesn't hold of And we're not going to
have it. I'm sorry to
disappoint you. The Rebbe The Rebbe
If
a person is sold to a
and his relatives don't come
to redeem him.
So first of all, there's a a rav that
called in this very very wealthy person.
He said, "Listen, there's a lot of
a lot of
I mean we need to step up this year." He
says, "I can't. I have so many relatives
in the city. I can't."
So he says, "Ah, okay, fine. So many
relatives in the city. Great."
Then the month comes and all of a sudden
the rav notices all these guys'
relatives are in line.
So he says,
"But what about your relative that's So
she doesn't give us a a penny." So he
So he calls the guy back in.
She says, "Well,
I spoke to your relatives. You don't
give them anything." He says, "I don't.
That's what I was saying.
If I don't give my own relatives in the
city, why should I give everybody else?"
Fine.
But
But here's the real story. The Rebbe
calls in a guy
and says, "Listen, there's a massive
massive here.
This family is unbelievable. They don't
The guy doesn't have for the longest
time and he's this and he's that and the
children and
He says, "Now what do you say?" So the
says, "I say I'm going to give $20,000."
$20,000? He says, "No."
She says, "Okay, so write out the check.
Write it out. Who should I write it out
to?" He says, "To your brother."
To your brother. Your own brother.
Sometimes people forget about the the
cravem. That That's a real story.
Says the Rebbe.
So
over here the cravem come
and redeem him. So Rebbe has a story.
And by the way, if you look at Rashi,
this is I I was to hear this. If you
weren't Is there any in the room?
Anybody here? No, not even one? You are?
Could you Could you say the possuk
like a
a
open
Yeah? It's unbelievable. Okay.
with equal opportunities. The other day
we were talking about Now we're talking
about open open From the all the way to
the I
My way is the only way and the best way
and you guys you don't know how to read.
Okay.
Yeah,
if the guy took me serious, I was I was
kidding. Everybody thinks that their way
is the only way.
So Rebbe says that a
Listen to this. If you were sold to a
here's another type of slave. A
Jewish slave sold to a is not
redeemed after six years. You hear
Danny? Not redeemed after six years. The
only way you can redeem him is through
relatives.
A person who's sold to a Jew
cannot be redeemed. This is a to
everybody. I I guarantee this is a If
you're redeemed to a Jew, if you're sold
to a Jew, your relatives cannot redeem
you.
Who can redeem you?
Yourself. Only yourself.
Okay, maybe they give you money and then
you can take that money.
But a relative not.
A person a who cannot be redeemed
through his relatives goes out with six
years.
This person that was sold to a non-Jew
goes out with relatives. And
I think says Rebbe that's only Rebbe.
So what does Rebbe do with the word It's
very important. He uses the word for
this special story. Only through
relatives and you cannot use six years
to go out. We just turned
in honor of my uncle Rebbe Person.
It's for a year filled with brocha and
brocha.
Rebbe
brocha and brocha for his family and all
of them and everyone doing the side.
Okay.
So the Rebbe
If
Rebbe agrees with the
of Rebbe
Why does Rebbe say that a Jew
who's sold to a Jew
cannot have his relatives redeem him?
Nail of
Rebbe
Oh, yeah. This is a different one. I'm
showing it. Hold on.
Here. So over here in Parshas Behar,
perek kuf hei, it says ki socheir shana
b'shana. Different It's the same zera
shava. We're using the same words
of socheir socheir. But now we're
learning from a
That a
that just like a is nigal
b'kroveiv
ya, when you when a Jewish slave is sold
to a his relatives redeem him. So
too, so too Jew is could be redeemed by
his relatives. Why? Because they say
socheir socheir. It's the same word
socheir. Shkoyach. Thank you very much.
Omer Rebbi Akiva Yitzchak Lo Lom Yigal
Socheir Socheir. No, again, we don't
have anybody that doesn't learn socheir
socheir. Even Rebbi learns socheir
socheir. Shnayim Ochuzin. D'Amakra
Yigalenu. L'zeh v'l'achair. Again, we
have a special meal of Yigalenu.
When man tana d'palig alei d'Rebbi,
who's the tana that argues on Rebbi and
says that
a person who's sold to a could go
out after six years?
Rebbi Yishmael G'lili v'Rebbi Akiva,
they both argue. D'sanya, Lo Yigal
b'eila. It's a person that's sold to a
Lo Yigal b'eila. Rebbi Yishmael G'lili
v'Rebbi Akiva l'shichrur b'shai kol
mishibo. So, let me just show you
there's a beautiful chart. I made a very
simple one and Yoshi Mamish made a
beautiful. Says like this.
Over here
you have it's one possuk. I just chopped
out the
the words that we're not using. It says
Oy doy doy ben doy doy Yigalenu. Odau
dau ben dau dau Yigalenu.
Right? And that comes to say kroveiv.
Kroveiv could redeem him. Then the
middle part is atzmoi.
Think about it for a second. If you
yourself redeem yourself, who are you
going to work for?
Wife.
Very good. Your wife.
For the for the Ribono shel Olam.
Because if you redeem yourself, there's
no have I mean you're going to work for
somebody else.
The master for sure not cuz he got paid.
For your friend for sure not cuz there's
nothing to do with it. And not for your
relative. So, you're going to work for
yourself. The big question is, what if
your relatives redeem you? Your
relatives redeem you, do you have to
work for them or you don't work for
them? What if a stranger redeems you? Do
you have to work for him or not?
So, the way the possuk works is the
possuk starts off with the top kroveiv
and
and ends with achairim, with strangers.
And the center is atzmoi. So, check out
this chart. It's beautiful.
Rebbi Yishmael G'lili puts the stop
under atzmoi and he says atzmoi and
kroveiv go together. You learn the top,
you go backwards. When you're learning
something, you go from atzmoi and you go
backwards to kroveiv.
And Rebbi Akiva holds no, you go from
atzmoi, you go forwards. You go to
achairim.
So, now let's see inside.
Omer Rebbi Akiva
El B'achair. V'yotzei b'shnas hayovel.
V'yotzei b'shnas hayovel, he doesn't get
freed. Rebbi Akiva im lo Yigal ela
b'eila v'yotzei b'shnas hayovel. So,
Rebbi Akiva kind of sticks in a word
here, ela b'eila. Only with these
kroveiv, then v'yotzei b'shnas hayovel.
Now, Rebbi Yishmael G'lili
meidei ela b'eila k'tziv. So, the Gemara
agrees that this is a bomb question. How
can you stick in a word and and give a
new p'shat to possuk? It says b'eila. It
doesn't say ela b'eila. So, the Gemara
says ela b'haikrov k'miflagi. No, see
you're right. That's such a good
question that we have to take it we have
to say the machlokes something else. Oy
doy doy ben doy doy Yigalenu b'gulas
kroveiv. Oy doy doy ben doy doy Yigalenu
b'gulas atzmoi. Sorry. This is This is
the what I just showed you. V'nigal
b'gulas achairim. Sorry. Yeah? Let's go
back.
Yeah. This is it. Okay, messed up. Erase
that. Go here.
Oy doy doy ben doy doy Yigalenu b'gulas
kroveiv. Oy doy doy ben doy doy Yigalenu
b'gulas atzmoi. V'nigal b'gulas
achairim. Rebbi Yishmael G'lili savar.
Now I'm going to get it from Leon that
we went too fast in the middle of this.
Zu Rebbi Yishmael G'lili savar mikra
nislach rov. Shnei gulas kroveiv u'gulas
atzmoi. Magulas atzmoi l'shichrur. Av
gulas kroveiv l'shichrur. Rebbi Yishmael
says go backwards. Leave that on the
screen for a second.
You go backwards. That what? Just like
kroveiv
Just like atzmoi. Sorry, just like
atzmoi goes free, doesn't work for
anybody. So too gulas kroveiv, you go
free, you don't work for anybody.
Over here?
I don't care.
Doy doy gets it.
We're in a rush. Go back.
Okay.
Okay, we did that. Magulas atzmoi
v'gulas kroveiv l'shichrur. Rebbi Akiva
savar. Now we go back. Mikra nislach
rov. We go to the end of the possuk.
Shnei gulas achairim u'gulas atzmoi.
Magulas atzmoi l'shichrur. Yeah,
everybody agrees that atzmoi goes free.
Av gulas achairim, when a stranger comes
to you and redeems you, you go free. But
if a relative does, you have to work for
him. Y'hachi b'eila l'amalei. Now, if
you look all the way in the beginning of
the machlokes, it says
D'sanya Lo Yigal b'eila. Rebbi Yishmael
G'lili v'Rebbi Akiva l'shichrur. Rebbi
Akiva b'eila l'shibud.
If this is a machlokes, we're going
based on this possuk. What does the word
b'eila have to do with here? Anything?
Says the Gemara, Ela b'eila hava amina
mikra niderash bein l'fanei bein
l'achair.
I would think that this possuk goes in
both directions. Yeah, like in the like
this. You don't know where atzmoi Atzmoi
is m'shuchrar, so it doesn't matter.
Kroveiv goes l'shichrur. Achairim goes
l'shichrur. It's all l'shichrur.
Hava amina mikra niderash bein l'fanei
bein l'achair. V'chol shichrur.
Asks the Gemara, E hachi hoda kusha
l'ducha. If so, we have a kasha on Rebbi
Akiva. Because it doesn't say ela
b'eila.
Ela b'eila.
Right? So, each one is going to grab and
say what he thinks. But Rebbi Akiva, the
only way he could get out of this if if
if when your relatives redeem you or if
achairim redeem you, you work
it should be that you work for yourself.
But I'm going to pick one of the two.
Rebbi Yishmael G'lili says no, when
kroveiv redeem you, you work for
yourself.
Rebbi Akiva says no, achair. Why does
Rebbi Akiva pick achair? Because he
sticks in the word ela b'eila.
It's b'eila. Ela b'eila. But it doesn't
make sense, says the Gemara. Ela There's
no ela b'eila. You can't stick in a word
that doesn't exist.
So, hoda kusha l'ducha. It doesn't say
ela.
So, now the Gemara says something very
simple. Ela b'svara k'miflagi.
When your relatives, think about
yourself. When your relatives redeem
you, does it make sense you should work
for them or you should go free?
If a stranger redeems you, what makes
more sense? That you should work for
them or you should go free?
Free. Free?
Why? If a stranger, some guy you don't
know, random guy redeem you. You should
work for him or you should go free?
Yeah, but why? He has nothing to gain
from it. Why should he redeem you?
You're your own uncle, he wants to
redeem you, he wants to let set you
free. But Mr. Joe Schmo, why should he
redeem you and you should go free? Go
come work for him. Fine. Okay, so you
must come to that. Okay. Ela b'svara
k'miflagi. But there is machlokes in
svara. Rebbi Yishmael G'lili savar
m'stabed gulas achairim l'shibud.
It makes sense when a stranger redeems
you, you should work for that stranger.
The amitzus shichrur hava amina l'pukli.
Nobody's going to want to redeem anybody
from a non-Jew. Rebbi Akiva savar
m'stabed gulas kroveiv l'shibud. It
makes more sense that you should work
for your relative. The amitzus shichrur
because if you say that he goes out
free, kol yoma b'yoma ozam u'zavim
achai. He'd keep on doing it relying on
his mother and his uncle and dod u'ben
dod. Rebboisei, have a wonderful day.
