Class 1: Intro to Tanya by Rabbi Avraham Hendel

people had a lot of questions about about about teachings of cabala and the other would go around um answering people's questions answer the questions of the scholars about it was a new something that was re that was not revealed till then also PE also he answered people's questions in general in Torah learning to show because people in the time when when kidus was revealed people were were afraid of it because the B came there's this is the B came very soon after and after I believe is name Jakob Frankle right these two guy what Jacob Frank Jacob Frank Jacob Frank those two fellows were false mesiah and they caused a lot of problems in am and when the B came starting teaching people were afraid that here is a new is another type of Mia another type of of a new someone who's trying to change their religion and people were very afraid and in fact they that those two fellows and we're talking about approximately 300 years ago um so those maybe a little bit more but those um those two fellows that were one after the other um both used mystical cabala so automatically when the was teaching which is the teachings of cabala of the secrets of Torah automatically people Associated the B with those two and therefore there was a biger position to the BM um so the AL who was a follower of the M who was the who was the follower of the B he was two generations after the bmov he was continuing on this mission of teaching in the secrets of Torah which is a whole different um thing to talk about maybe next class why we'll talk maybe at the end of this class a little bit why did they the B and then the follows the B understand that in our gener in our Generations it is so important for us to have these teachings to give us strength in our observance of God inem but this was the B and the AL would travel all the time for two for two reasons one is to to answer people's questions in general in Torah learning to show them that here the people learn they also learn Torah and they all also know Torah and they could answer other people's questions and also to answer questions about so one time he came to this town I believe it was chov and he came to the BET M and everybody has their questions and the says I'm going to going to sing a Niger now to sing a niceic Melody it was a very um we don't know which Melody it was but it was a very deep Melody and he just sang that Melody and everybody's answers questions were answered and it was just mystical but basically it seems that the AL with it was had the ability with this nigon to bring to connect everybody with their Essence with their with with with their Essence and and they were able to connect with the source of the answers you in other words sometimes we have questions and figure out answers how that that is something that we deal with in Tanya in chapter 3 how does it happen that suddenly you have a question and you have the answer for it or you you're you come with a new brainstorm with a new idea because we have deep in our soul it's called kill this ability to to to to come up with new ideas with new understanding with new insights so and that's deep in our soul that's really it's it's a little bit a littleit Beyond us it's it's an area in the soul that is a little bit beyond so he was able to connect them with that so in a sense I think that that story symbolizes what Al is trying to do in Tanya he's trying to do the same like what he did with the nigon he's trying to connect us with the depth of our souls to see to understand the treasures that we have deep inside to understand what's really going on within us that that with that we could solve all problems s that we may have in our lives so therefore it's considered a very very fundamental book for for for generally for okay so what what the next thing I wanted to do we're going we know in Tanya the focuses on a lot on different types of Foundations in in Judaism in our Nish but generally very generally there are three themes in Tanya if we divide okay in Tanya there's actually five parts so we are focusing now on the first part the first part of time has 52 or 53 chapters 53 chapters and in these 53 Main chapters of Tanya we we'll divide into three themes and the First theme is going to be about who it's on on the on the paper who am I the second one is going to be how can I have real inter internal happiness and the third is what is the purpose of creation what is the purpose of my creation so in a way the beginning of Tanya deals with the First with a who am I and then the second part of Tanya deals with uh with the second issue about Sim but happiness and the third part of Tanya deals with the purpose of creation so we understand there's a lot to talk about but we'll try to talk about these three because today is an introduction for the Tanya so we'll try to touch each one of these three themes a little bit to give us a general idea of what we're going to do in Tanya okay so um so let's start with the first one who am I so there's a famous there's a famous cic story of we know that the Alba unfortunately lost his daughter her her name was darara when she was very young she just got married she just had a baby uh she had a a young a child I don't remember exactly how old he was but he was not five yet he was in his and took on himself to raise that child his grandson and his name wasel and he was later on theed he was a Reb later on so one time the grandson of the ALB the author of Tanya is sitting on the laps of his grandfather and he's playing with his beard and theab challenges him he's start is's playing with him and he's challenging him he says tell me where is zi right where's grandpa so he points on the beard he says no this is the beard of zi where is zi say points on his hand points on his eyes and he says no this is the eyes of zi this is the hand of zi and that went on everything he said he showed him it's not really zi it's just the hand of zi the eye of Zade the nose of Zade so finally the child was very smart he left the room and after he left the room the room he said zi he called his grandfather and he said yes so when he turned to him he said yes says that's zi so um so this story could um give us a little understanding about ourselves because if we ask if each one of us would ask himself or herself what am I so we could start thinking about the fact if I'm married I'm not married if I'm a mother or a father if I'm a son so this is not who am I that's that's that's important but that's not who that's my not my essence you could think about your career think if I'm a dentist if I'm a doctor if I'm a if I'm a lawyer whatever it is again this is something this is not my Essence we could think about how much how learned I am what kind of of diplomas I have that's also things are additional to my Essence so the in the Tanya what we're trying to to figure out is Who Am who are we and and us and usually we don't even have time to think about it because we just go with a flow we're we're just busy all the time and we find we we we're under pressure we don't have time to think and sometimes it happens that we start thinking to ourselves who who who who we really are right it could happen God forbid when there's a tragedy or when there's a big Sim there's a wedding there's there's a a child birth it it happens in our lives sometimes that we stop and we really want to understand who are we in essence so this is the the this is the focus of the beginning of Tanya to give us the understanding who are we in essence and we're going to learn that that the our Essence is actually divided into two we have two Souls and we're going to try to understand the essence of each one of these souls and if we able to understand that we could understand the battles that the struggle the conflicts that we have all the time and um and and we if we know that that could be the foundation for our to be successful in our lives to run our lives to to to be Victorious and to leave our lives the way we should that's the first part the second part is about happiness um each one of us for sure has a list of reasons why it's they we cannot be happy there's a lot of we could have family problems we could have financial problems we could have um security problems health issues there could be a lot of reasons why it's hard for us to be happy and if we ask ourselves how could we make ourselves happy so we could all think of ways to make ourselves happy we could think try to go go out to see go out for a trip to see the nature listen to music basically do things that will help you run away from reality um also some people have the attitude well I should always always focus on the good things I have on the on the half a cup and the Half Full Cup right um be happy with what I have thank AEM for what I have focus on that or do things I like to do like I like to help other people like to be or I should just be and whatever just do things I love to do that will make me happy or just be in a positive environment be around people who are positive so there is many secrets to how to be happy but if you think about it all these things that we just mentioned may be temporary temporary happiness it may bring temporary happiness it this happiness could is not we're not it's not necessarily going to be long-term happiness it's going to help us for the moment to feel happy and in Tanya what we're looking for what all of us are looking for and what the Tanya is going to answer is what we want to have it's called in HEB we want to have happiness with life we want to be happy with what we are and what what we have and what the W with with our situation and this is um what the t is going to focus on there a a famous um there was once a um a comedian who was like number one comedian everybody loved to go to his shows and one time uh psychologist happened to be by happened to be there by the show and he he really saw this guy is really good like he really gets everybody to laugh and he decided from now on all these people come to him all the time with problems of depression he's going to send them all to this comedian and it helped it worked they all had a laugh when they went to him and they all became happier and and uh it was amazing one time a man came to him and he could see this man is really depressed and right away after he a little talk with this with this uh patient he realized he said to him you only the only way I the only medicine for you is to go to this show so the guy says it's not going to work for me so he says why it worked with so many people I'm sure it's going to work with you says the problem is that I am that comedian so so we we could understand that if you're able this joke actually has a lot of we could take has a certain message that we we could understand that you know some things could make us happy for the moment we could hear a nice joke we could but we're looking for something deeper something that could could just make us happy without running away from life we're going to talk about it soon that usually people associate happiness with running away from myself if I could have a drink and forget about myself that's when I could be happy and the T could is going to teach us how we could be happy with who we are with what we have with our situation okay then the that's the second theme and we're going to the third theme which is why was I born um many times we don't think about it people don't like to think about it either because they don't have the answer for it or because they they think that the answer for it may be too heavy for them so um they tried to run away from this question but it's a it's obviously a very important question there a question to ask why are we here and why did hasm create the whole world and this is obviously the most fundamental thing theas came to teach us why what's the purpose of everything many people think about what's life life is about raising children about uh actualizing myself the mesh to actualize myself right the mes to deal with challenges and overcome them them so again we're going to look for something deeper about life there's a story of of the and he was he was uh his name he oh I think he was somebody else actually okay anyways this fellow um he was a great and the wants wanted to give him a blessing said I want to give you a blessing of wealth and actually he said no he said I'm afraid maybe if he would be uh young he would want it but I don't know anyways he was he was already older umid he was already grown up he probably married off his children already and he was afraid he says I I I have no benefit from having wealth all it's going to do it's going to distract me from serving God properly having all this businesses and all this money so he said no I want to be able to focus on my service of God God and then he say okay I'll will bless you with long life he says only in the condition that the blessing is going to have another part to it that it's going to be not just a long life it should be a meaningful life it should be life that God is part of my life it should be it shouldn't be like a peasant life of of someone who could live his life without seeing God in his life without hearing about God in his life not that kind of a life otherwise I'm not it's not I'm not interested in it and it's very interesting because many [Music] times one two more books because normally if if someone has the ability to get wealth or to get long life right away would say yes without thinking twice but here he were talking about someone who worked on himself that his concern is not just to have long life it's not just to have a lot of money it's actually to to to to have a focus to have a meaningful life otherwise why life is not worth is not worth it not worth nothing for him okay there's actually a very nice story with RAB AKA RAB lived in the time he was actually one of the 10 Martyrs of the Romans um so RAB AKA was teaching Torah at a time that the Romans um forbade teaching Torah and there was a guy his name was papus and he went over TOA he says what are you doing you're putting yourself in danger you're putting everybody in danger you should stop studying Torah like this you they could kill you and he said I'll I'll tell you a story there was once it's a famous story but okay there was once a um a fox was watching the fish running in the water and he asked the fish why are you running like this he says we thought that you were smart you the fox is known to be a SM a wise animal a clever animal don't you see there is all these fishmen trying to catch us so the fox says I have a great idea I have a cave that no Fishman knows about come with me and I'll hide you there and the fish answer back to the fox we thought you were clever you know here in the water at least we have a chance that if the fish if the fishmen will not catch us we'll stay alive but if we go out with you we'll surely die we can't live outside of the water so RAB AA said to Pap the same was with us with am Israel a Jew without Torah is not alive if if I'm endangering my life because I'm studying Torah I might be killed okay there's a chance they're going to catch me I'm going to get killed a chance I'm not going to die but if I don't study Torah then in my in my perspective I'm dead I have I have no meaning to my life and that's not what I'm here for so this is um this is this is something that thean will help us connect with to understand that we're not just here by chance we're not just here to live x amount of years and just to make sure that we wake up every morning and we make sure we have a good sleep and we have our food and we have our we could pay the bills we know that we here for a mission and like we see this that that just giving a blessing of long life is not satisfying for him unless he knows that that th that those years adding to his life will be full of meaning will be full of service of God there's another story with the alter while he was in prison also a known story um so very the was in prison actually for exactly 53 days which is corresponding to the 53 chapters of Tanya he was there from after Suk till till 19 was exactly 53 days and it was it was he understood that it was something spiritual the reason why he had to be in prison because there was a prosecution in Heavens about what he was doing taking the secrets of Torah and giving it to everybody to understand so there was it's like um it says that whenever there's a great Nish a great Soul having to come down in Heavens there is a lot of angels who are not allowing it they say because they want this world they want this world to stay dark they don't want that it should be so easy uh they should be whenever that great s comes to this world that could Inspire so many Jews they're afraid of it they they want to do they they they say that if this s comes to the world then we're not able to do a job we're not be able to challenge the people they're going to get everybody inspired they going to get everybody holy so similarly is about the secrets of Torah which is another point to it actually the secrets of Torah is supposed to be secretive but obviously there was a time when it had to be revealed but originally for many generations it was it was it was hidden so the idea of revealing the secrets of Torah and the idea of of giving so much Holiness down here it was not a simple thing and that's why there was a persecution in heaven and and the alter was put in prison not just because that there were some Jews who believed that the alter was doing something wrong and they informed him to the government saying that he was sending money to Israel really he was giving money to the poor Jews in Israel but they were saying they he was helping the church government and all everything else they accused them for it was really something more spiritual it really came from heaven and really this is the idea of this is what teaches us to understand that whatever happens in our lives is not so and so it's like we're reading now by ysep who said to his brothers don't feel bad Al don't be depressed because of what you did to me Hashem arranged all this so I could support you I could support the whole world so to see that even though they did Sin by selling him and they were punished and the 10 Martyrs were for the 10 brothers who sold ysep so there was a punishment for it and the Exile of Egypt was was part of it was because the punishment for the for the selling of of ysf so we do understand that that the people who sold ysf were punished but at the same time if something happens we have to understand that it's all coming from Heaven it it it was arranged from hasem hasem wanted ysep to be where he was and they were just emissaries they were just Messengers so the ALB of being in prison is also something that really came from heaven and that's why he was there for 53 days for 53 chapters of Tanya anyways while he was in prison um um the very soon they realized that he was a really great man and a lot of great people from the Russian government want to have a chance to meet with him so there was the M minister of Education Who Made Who went into his seller to his sell and he to meet with the Al rabba and and he was talking to him about about Judaism about things from the Bible from the from the Torah and one of the things he asked him was about the story that when God right after Adam ate from the tree from atat um Hashem came and Hashem said aak where are you so that doesn't make any sense God says where are you God doesn't know where Adam is so the AL answered him what Rashi the commentary says that Hashem doesn't like to surprise somebody and and just say what did you do start open the conversation he says where are you and that was just to open our conversation and then Hashem says why did you eat from the tree so the minister said to the Al I know what Rashi says I want to hear your Insight for this for this story so the Al said you want to hear my my perspective I'll tell you my perspective there could be a man who is in a certain age and he actually quoted the age of this Minister which was obviously shocking for him and he said and hasem says to this person a where are you did you fulfill your mission in life did you realize that you're here in this world for you have a mission you have a you have a you have a purpose you have there's a reason why you here did you do anything to fulfill what how much did you do so far towards your mission in life and that was the answer that gave him and actually I think that this um is what the is going this is this is the third theme of the of the that theb is going to teach us is going to show us what is the purpose of creation the purpose of ourselves that we could keep on asking ourselves where are we holding with regards to completing our mission in life so these are the three major things that obviously there is a lot to learn about and uh we're going to see as we go along Tanya to talk about these three themes the theme of of um who am I this theme of happiness and the theme or why we he what's the purpose of creation before we continue um we're just going to give a little a little um um a few words about the Tanya in general and number one uh the the Tanya was written by the AL his name wasman of leadi he is the the one who founded the ofad he was a student of the mid of MRI who was the student of the B so the B is the one who started the teachings of General um and the was the student continued in the path of the B and then after that the AL called the AL because inab there is seven RAB rabbis and he was the first one Al means the the older one he's the the oldest the the the first and um and he took the of the what he learned from the and the he brought it into isation of into logic into intellectual understanding organized an intellectual understanding and his main book is a here he did this job of taking the the the the foundations of and organize it in a very clear and logical way um and the the RAB rashab said that the Tanya is considered the written Torah of of in general we know that we have the written Torah not only written Torah there is a lot of there talud and there commentaries there's thousands of books so the same with the T with regards to cabala and teaching that there the and on the Tanya there is more than 2,000 books written based on the teachings of Tanya so this is like the written Torah of um the Tanya was printed over 5,000 uh Editions of Tanya all over the world almost in 10 different languages almost only the languages that you speak and um and we as we could as we're going to see the message of Tanya relevant even though they were written over 200 years ago they're relevant to to us today as well we'll start with the front page of the Tanya okay that I just said before it's just a few words that the wrote about the Tanya just four lines that we could see just from those four lines a lot about the T not everything is written on this page is written about we'll start from where it says it's seph this is you see it says seph seph what it has two names two names safer is the book yeah or very good okay it's called Tanya because the first word is Tanya but he called it look means a collection of ideas so we that's the way he called it we call it Tanya I don't know if he called it Tanya or not but um but he he calls it I'm I'm calling the the collection of of uh it's like when you have stats ofar ofarim of Articles collection of Articles so we could see the great humility of theab he says all I'm doing now is just collecting some ideas this is the first part and what next page another another page one more more more like this yeah another one more and that's it yeah yeah that's it and this is called bem It's called The Book of the the the we know that there is um tadim and tadim we're going to learn in t are those who don't have any challenges and any struggles or or different type struggles that we that we can relate to so this book is written specifically for people like us that have challenges have um Temptations and inclinations this book is talking for all of us and then again with his great humility he writes me all I did was I compiled ideas from different books and really he's focusing on two major books the books of the ra maharal of Prague one of the greatest cabalists the maral of prag and till today we if you go to Prague you see the of the maral in prag and the sh the one who wrote the book that's the two major cabalistic books that the says I based my my book on these two on these twoim and plus others and I it's collection from different teachers teachers from the B and the again he is saying all I did was I took ideas that I taught I learned from these books and I learned from these rabbis and I put it together and um okay and again this is a safer that gives a new whole new Clarity a new whole new picture about life and yet the AL is just saying this is just compiling some articles you he if you see the name of the book you don't think you know today when they make a book to make sure that the name of the book should really catch you so it wasn't about giving a loud name that will catch everybody's attention you know he gave a name that in a very humble way this just compiling some articles and he says the the foundation of this book is on the on the verse that mosu said the day he passed away he said a famous verse that says like this that it is close to you m before he passed away he he he was he gave a long speech longest speech ever for 30 for 37 days he started the whole the whole fifth book is M speech to before he passed away started till he passed away Z so and then the last few from and on is the day MH passed away moshu did gave his last message okay so in that last message he said that don't think Judaism is overseas or you have to fly there no there's no airplanes you don't have to fly to the sky you don't have to go overseas to be able to follow it is very close to you to follow the and it's it's three things this is also one of the things that talks about that there is that the Torah demands of us to secure or to guard three mostly three parts of our being which is your mouth which is speech your heart which is thought last is action speech thought and action in Judaism are the most important um that one should should supervise his thought speech and action every moment of the 24 4 hours which seems to be very difficult but MOS says it is close to you it is easy it's close Okay close doesn't necessarily mean easy but close means it's doable it's possible so the AL is going to explain to us because many of us think that Judaism is impossible especially when we understand in Tanya what Judaism really demands of us it's not just about action it's also about speech and not just about speech also about thought and 24 hours a day 24 7 is's never off time so it seems impossible so if we learn Tanya we're able to understand how it is close it is possible and actually the AL is hinting another point because doesn't only mean thought also means emotions which also in Judaism we understand to have a complete Mitzvah it has to be done with emotion and this really seems impossible for many of us how could I really have feel emotion of love of of of hem it seems that something that you can't just feel so the also teaches us how we could create emotions of of aan of love and awe to Hashem which is very essential like just a little statement it says in the Zohar that it's like a bird that has two Wings every MIT is like a bird and the two Wings is like the emotion of a of love and awe is like the two wings of the bird that bird cannot fly without it so he made a the darar says that without doing a mitzah without no feelings it's it's causing that the MIT cannot really fly high it's it's limiting the Mitzvah so it's this is actually one of the things out there Ro in T and and when he came out of jail one of the great Scholars challenged him about this this is like how could you say such a thing and the Al said it says in the Zar he says no I need a source in the tud so the tud is the the Gar so the AL says actually I could show you a source for it in the tal and he pointed in the G I believe it's it says over there that there is a a contradiction between two verses in in One Source it says your kindness is still heaven and there's another verse in that says your your kindness is above heaven so the gam asks it's a contradiction is it above heaven or below heaven one verse says this way one verse this way so they says so the tamut says this is talking about observance of the mitv so we're saying like we say t is Torah Torah Mitzvah is kindness is the light of God to the world so it says this is about someone who's doing and this is not something not lishma what does lishma means for the sake of connecting with hem which means that you're doing it with feeling of love for Hashem of that you really want to have relationship with hasem that's mean lishma the means that you're doing it for the for the cause of having a relationship with God you're not just doing it because you're scared of that you may not uh lose your job if you're not going to going to fulfill if you're not going to keep shabas God May punish you and you'll lose your job or whatever that's not called lishma when a person is afraid of being punished or a person wants to have a big paradise and that's his motivation for Tor Mitzvah that's not called lishma that means lishma he's doing it for himself dma means that you're doing it because you're appreciating God and you want to have a relationship with hem so the Tam says that one who um one who does a Mitzvah without feelings of LMA then the Mitzvah goes above heaven and if he doesn't have that feeling it's below heaven so this is exactly what the Zar says because really we know that all the in the talud there's two parts there's the part that that is theic part it's back the the the the the the the the the details of all the laws and the reasons for them but then there is a whole part in the tud that's a medish and it says that the medis is really full of cabala just that it's hidden and it's hidden in like in stories that sometimes we understand the St sometimes the stories don't make any sense and just like in the Torah we know there's a lot of M mystical messages in the simple stories that we read in the Torah so the so this is part of the medis that in in the the part of the tamut talks about whether it's above heaven or below heaven and this is the source for what the in and he so this is important so we understand based on that that it is very critical for one to serve God not only with his thought speech and action also with his emotions and that's the question and and when M says is close to you to serve god with your heart which means thought but also means feelings of the heart again the question Rises how is this easy how is this not again not easy close how is this close to me how it seems that it's impossible I could never get there so the is going to address this in the in Tanya now for the emotions are we talking about the seven SP right seven spirit is is is is emotions yeah so now clarify all this properly how is this very close and it says the real the the the the way that it's very close is it's in a long short way and the and and understood when the a long short way he's referring to a famous story in the T the story goes with RAB Yeshua Ben Kan um RAB said that once um a little child won him um he was walking and he came to a fork in the road and he he saw a child there and he asked this child I need to get to get I need to get to this town over there the certain Town tell me which way should I take so the child says look this is the long short way this is the short long way so what would you do so he he decided he'll take the short long way sounds shorter so very soon he saw it was very short because after a few minutes he already sees the the the the outskirts of of the city but then the road take took him to Gardens and Orchards and there was a lot of rocks on the way and there was fences yeah he saw it's going to take me hours to get there if I take this way so then he went back and he said to the child what did you why do you say it's a short way it's very long and he says I told you it's a short long way so then he k him on his head he says you're fortunate am Isel that all of you are so wise from the greatest to the to from the oldest from the greatest to the smallest and then he took the other way which was very long because but it was a it was a straight road it was a paved Road it it was it took him around and around but eventually he was able to get to the city so the alter of said that this is what Tanya is about Tanya because I think today especially we all looking for the short way for the for the quick way for the shortcuts and the AL says that this is not going to be the case over here to really have a proper proper service of God it's going to be a long way which means there but it's a paved way it's going to be a lot of chapters that again there's 53 chapters a lot of learning a lot of working um a lot of commitment but um but it's going to be a short way because if you follow it and you and you you're able to get to your destination you're able to get there this is um could be similar to um when you when you go on when you imagine somebody's doing a barbecue and never did a barbecue before and so he's at first there's very strong fire in the barbecue and you get excited oh it's so much fire I could cook the meat very very fast this way and if you're going to put the meat there while the fire is burning very strong what's going to happen the outside of the meat is going to get burnt and the inside is going to stay raw but someone who knows knows that you have to wait till the big fire goes away and uh it's going to be and and the fire and it's going to be just the fire of the coals and it's going to be a very slow cooking it's not going to be so fast not going to burn but it's going to it's going to be it's going to go on it's going to it's going to make the difference it's going to cook the meat so we're talking about the calls actually symbolize also the inner fire that is something that has to go within something cannot be external if we're looking for shortcuts it's usually something very external something that is it's not so deep and it's not really meaningful this is a long short way which means that it's slowly to work to take another step by step but the is is promising us that it's a it's a secure way it's a paved way that if we go step by step with the teachings of Tanya we'll get there um um okay so one more point theab in in the introduction says that people may think that I'm Different everybody thinks that they're different and their problems were never addressed so the AL actually says that it's true there's a famous gar that says that the same way that nobody's face is the same nobody's mind is the same in cabala it says that that the reason why it's called panim face is called panim panim means pth it means you're inside so the the face is a reflection of your soul and that's why usually the place to see if if the the mood of the person if he happy or sad or depressed or or excited or whatever it is it is it's usually on the face and also see the character of the person is is on the face so the face is reflect reflecting your soul your inside now nobody's face is the same and that shows that nobody's inside the same so it's a obvious thing that everybody's is different everybody everybody everybody has different problems different dilemas different conflicts nobody's exactly the same but the AL says so that's where we could think well the Al wrote this book how could he answer me I'm Different I was never in in the history of the world in the past in the future I'm the only I'm in I'm different so how could he answer my my dilemas so the author ever said that this book is different than many
